Eugene Oliver
Eugene G. "Gene" Oliver, 71, of Rock Island, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Entombment will be in the Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a Christian wake service will be held at 2:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Chicago, Alleman High School, or to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Gene was born March 22, 1935, in Moline, a son of Marshall G. and Stella V. Richter Oliver. He married the former Marilyn L. Daxon, Aug. 6, 1955, in Moline.

He graduated from Alleman High School in 1953, where he lettered in all major sports and was named to the Alleman High School Hall of Fame. Gene was inducted into the Quad Cities Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. He attended Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., on a football scholarship prior to joining the St. Louis Cardinals' minor league organization in 1956. He moved to the major league Cardinals team in 1959, and was traded to the Milwaukee Braves in 1963. He moved to Atlanta with the Braves organization in 1965, and later played with the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox. Gene joined the Chicago Cubs in 1968, and ended his professional baseball career in 1969. He currently was semi-retired and working as a bailiff for Rock Island County.

He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Major League Baseball Players Association. He enjoyed officiating high school sports and sports of all kinds, including hunting, fishing and golfing. Gene also enjoyed cooking and traveling, but his greatest love was his family, and the time they spent together.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Ken Schardt, Madison, Wis.; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Stephanie Oliver, Moline; grandchildren, Ryan, Adam, Alex, Rachel, Lauren, Katie and Anthony; sisters, Dolores Fersch, Mission, Texas, and Virginia Ashcraft, Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Tom Oliver, Atlanta; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandson, Jeffrey Oliver; and sister, Mary Sansale.

Larry Williams
Larry Williams, 55, of Rock Island, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Joan Bystrom
Joan Lou Bystrom, 72, of Moline, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, Moline.

Arrangements are pending at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline.

Survivors include her husband, Jonas Dean Bystrom.

Ronald Granger
Ronald "Ron" Granger, 71, of Moline went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 3, 2007, after a long, courageous battle with extended illness.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a masonic service at 7 p.m. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island, or the American Cancer Society.

Ron was born May 19, 1935, in Moline, the son of Roy and Ethel Sprunk Granger. He married Sandra Miller on Jan. 31, 1963, at Edgewood Baptist Church.

Ron was employed by Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash., after being discharged from the service. He was then employed as a police officer in the Moline Police Department from 1958 to 1985, retiring at the rank of lieutenant in 1985, after 27 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Ron was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island. He was also a member of the Moline Masonic Lodge No. 1014 A.F. & A.M., Moline Consistary Scottish Rite & Coordinates Bodies, former member of Crimestoppers Board, and first vice-president for the State of Illinois AFSCME Council 44.

Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Sandy; daughter, Cassie (Keith) Wolfe, East Moline; four grandchildren, Logan Wolfe, East Moline, Angela Wolfe, East Moline, Melissa (Eric) Harvey, St. Petersburg, Fla., Eric (Amber) Wolfe, Goodyear, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (Terry) Putman, Summerfield, Fla., Bonnie (Bob) Hudson, Stoughton, Wis.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, an uncle, cousins and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Chad Wolfe; and nephew, Kevin Stein.

John Leemon
John A. Leemon, 79, of Mount Carroll, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Southwest Medical Center, Fort Myers, Fla.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Harkness officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery , Mount Carroll. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll.

He was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Hoopeston, Ill., the son of Allen and Eva Merrit Leemon. He married Sally P. Pierce July 14, 1951, in Moline.

Survivors include his wife, Sally, Mt. Carroll; son, John, Chicago; daughter, Lisa (spouse, Bruce) Johnson, Stoughton, Wis; and grandchildren, Andrea and Erik Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Anthony Van Ryn
Anthony Joseph Van Ryn, 83, of Moline died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at his home.

Robert S. Walker, 55, of Moline died Friday, March 2, 2007, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Luella `Tootie' Cooper
Luella "Tootie" Cooper, 82, of Taylor Ridge, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at her home.

Committal services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at Andalusia cemetery . Visition is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Family Funeral Services, Milan.

She was born July 9, 1924, in Colchester, Ill., daughter of Gary and Nellie Gillispie Anderson. She married Russell Cooper March 8, 1942, in LaHarpe, Ill.

She was a tool-and-die maker at the former I.H. Farmall Works, retiring on Sept. 30, 1974.

She enjoyed racing greyhounds and traveling with her husband for over 50 years. She also enjoyed gardening and canning.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Cooper; sister, Marie McKee.

Geraldine Frew
Geraldine K. "Gerry" Frew, 84, of Geneseo passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Mike Pakula and the Rev. Richard Barclift will celebrate. Burial will be the Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where a rosary will be recited at 7:45 p.m. Memorials may be left to the St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo Good Samaritan, or the St. Jude's Children Hospital.

Gerry was born on Sept. 29, 1922, in Geneseo, the daughter of Henry and Florence Goethals Mapes. She was a 1940 graduate of the Villa de Chantal in Rock Island, and later attended the Illinois State Teachers school. She then received her teaching degree from Marycrest College, Davenport. She was united in marriage to Donald Frew on June 10, 1944, in Geneseo. He passed away in 1998.

Gerry started her teaching career in the rural schools in Geneseo. She then was a teacher and principal at the Northside Elementary School in Geneseo. She retired as principal in 1979, after 37 years with the school. She was a member of the St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Circle No. 9 of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church and the Geneseo Business and Professional Women's Association for many years. She truly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include one brother, James Mapes, Rock Island; eight nieces (and spouses), Sheila (Paul) Guse, Rock Island, Kathy (Ron) Johnson, Rock Island, Michelle (Doug) Breiby, Rock Island, Lisa DeBroeck, Rock Island, Angela Steele, Naples, Fla., Monica Mapes, Rock Island, Rebecca Breiby, Preemption, Kelly (Matt) De Bo, Coal Valley; and many great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; and one sister, Henrietta Freeman.

Charles Garrison
Charles A. Garrison, 88, of Cambridge, died Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kewanee. The Rev. Burnell Eckardt will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery , Cambridge, with military services. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.

Charlie was born Feb. 20, 1919, in Cambridge, the son of Arthur L. and Anna E. Munson Garrison. He was a 1939 graduate of Cambridge High School. His marriage to Elva G. Morrison took place on June 22, 1947, in Kewanee.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Charlie was a carpenter in Kewanee and Cambridge. He later worked for Poppleton and Munson Plumbing and Heating and their successor, Hintz, until they closed the Cambridge office. He then worked out of his home for several years. He was last employed at the Village Hardware in Cambridge and continued to do screen and window repairs in his home shop after leaving there.

He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years and had served as Scoutmaster of Troop 135 for many years. Charlie received the Silver Beaver volunteer award from the Illowa Council, BSA. He also received the Service Above Self Award from the Cambridge Rotary Club. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kewanee and a member of the Cambridge American Legion Post 417. Charlie loved singing and was active in the Bend of the River Barbershop Chorus for over 60 years. He sang in many barbershop quartets over the years.

Surviving are his wife, Elva; a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Mark Havens, Avon, Ill.; and a grandson, Douglas Havens, at home. Also surviving are a sister, Frances "Billie" Bierman, Shipman, Ill.; and a brother, Arthur L. Garrison II, Seagoville, Texas. His parents; five sisters, Ella, Zepha, Loretta, Marcella and Esther; and a brother, Robert, preceded him in death.

Robert Getman
Dr. Robert J. Getman, 84, of Bettendorf, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport.

Hubert Good
Hubert O. Good, 94, of Davenport died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Meadow Lawn Health Care Center, Davenport.

Lydia L. Hoffmann, 94, of Davenport, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Davenport Lutheran Home.

Anna M. Stinnett, 82, of Rock Island, died June 26, 2007, at her daughter's home in Milan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island. Further arrangements are pending.

Richard Anderson
Richard D. Anderson, 69, of Moline, died Sunday, June 24, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Association.

Richard Anderson was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Rock Island, the son of Donald and Rosie Diggs Anderson. He married Sharon A. Hurley on Dec. 1, 1956, in Moline. She preceded him in death Dec. 22, 2005.

He was employed at the former Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 36 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1993. He served in the Illinois National Guard and was an avid golfer.

Survivors (and spouses) include his daughters, Pamela Boyle and fiance, James Vesperman, Moline, and Patricia "Patty" Crouch and fiance, Rick Hernandez, Moline; son and daughter-in-law, Richard (Pamela) Anderson, Moline; son, John Anderson, Davenport; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; brothers, Donald (Brenda) Anderson, Mississippi, and David Baker, Rock Island; sister-in-law, Kathleen (Edward) DeJaynes, East Moline; brothers-in-law, Bernard "Barney" (Chris) Hurley, Coal Valley, James "Jim" Hurley, Camdenton, Mo., and Michael Hurley, Lebanon, Mo.

Dorothy Cady
Dorothy I. "Dot" Cady, 83, of Davenport, formerly of Moline, died Monday, June 25, 2007, in her home.

Services are 6 p.m. Thursday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with the Rev. Curtis Fee presiding. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Thursday. Private burial will take place at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the Dorothy Cady Memorial Fund, to be established by the family.

The former Dorothy Martin was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of Grace and Harvey D. Martin. She married Bernard A. Cady in 1942. He passed away in September of 2001.

She was a devout Christian that loved spending time most recently at the New Life Christian Church in Davenport, where she was a member. She also loved spending time with her family and being a member of the Red Hat Society.

Dorothy is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Cecil E. and Colleen Victoria Cady, Bettendorf; a daughter, Stephanie Blackburn, Lebanon, Mo.; granddaughters and grandson-in-law, Tamara and Trent Marshall, and Tiffany Cady, all of Bettendorf; three grandsons and three granddaughters in Lebanon; three great-grandchildren, Mason Cady, Payton Hansen and Madisyn Miller, all of Bettendorf; 14 great-grandchildren in Lebanon; and two sisters, Lucille Martin and Vestille Rivers, both of Nashville. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Harvey D. Martin.

James Devine
James L. Devine, 77, of Moline, died Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Funeral services will be noon Friday, June 29, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James was born March 29, 1930, in Sterling, Ill., the son of Lloyd and Helen Bishop Devine.

He was a veteran during the Korean War, having served in the Army, and was a member of the Moline VFW.

Survivors include sons, Shannon Devine, Kewanee, Michael Devine, Moline; grandchildren, Joshua Kelleher, April Rose, Dustin Bucy, Andrew Bucy, Cody Devine, Jared Devine, Robert Bucy, and Christine Bucy; great-grandchildren, Dustin Kuefner, Kira Rose, and Luis Martinez; brothers, Frank Mandersheid, Naperville, Ill., and Gary Mandersheid, Huntley, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cynthia; son, Steven; granddaughter, Tara; and grandson, Jason.
