Guy Messer

Guy Messer, 89, of rural Mount Pleasant, died at noon Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Henry County Health Center. Arrangements are pending at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

Harold Wagner

Harold Lloyd Wagner, 77, of Burlington, died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 17, 1925, in New London, he was the son of Bert E. and Mildred Bessie Sullivan Wagner. On June 16, 1951, he married Bonnie J. Schmitz in Monmouth, Ill.

Mr. Wagner was a service repair technician for Sears for 40 years. He retired in 1987.

He was a graduate of New London High School and Commercial Refrigeration School in Chicago. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Eagles, Moose Lodge, held many state offices for the 40 and 8 and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, motorcycles, camping and wintering in Arizona. He was a World War II Air Force veteran with the rank of staff sergeant/nose gunner.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Harold "Buzz" Wagner of Burlington, Randy Wagner Sr. of Mount Pleasant and Marvin Merritt of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Connie Daniel of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; one stepsister, Lytle Goodwater of Cedar Rapids; and his stepmother, Alma Wagner of New London.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin after noon today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Wagner will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with Pastor Charles Stevens officiating. Burial with military rites by VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corps League will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Steven C. Casady

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Steven Craig Casady, age 37, who passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2003, will be 1:00 PM this afternoon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the education of his children, Courtney 3 years old, and Brynn three months old. Teresa Thomas

Teresa Elaine Thomas, age 41 of Burlington, passed away at 10:00 PM Friday, June 30, 2000 at her mother's home after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Born December 15, 1958, in Carthage, Ill. she was the daughter of Loren "Pete" and Deloris A. Smith Thomas.

Miss. Thomas attended Burnside Grade School and was a 1978 graduate of Burlington High School. She attended Riverside Baptist Church. She loved animals and music, she collected teddy bears and key chains and was an avid gardner.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Deloris A. and Robert Murray of Burlington; her father Loren "Pete" Thomas of Burnside, Ill.; her grandmother, Wahneeta Smith of Carthage, Ill; one brother, Terry (Kim) Thomas of Burnside, Ill.; one sister Tammy Thomas of Burlington; one stepbrother, Danny Murray of Wapello; one stepsister, Joni Wykert of Oakville; one niece, Laura, two nephews, Luke and Andrew, one stepniece and two stepnephews; and special friend, Jeff Lafferty of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by two grandfathers, one grandmother, one stepgrandfather and one stepgrandmother.

Vistitation will begin after 8:00 AM Monday July 3, at the Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM, and after 9:00 AM Wednesday, July 5, at the Burnside Christian Church in Burnside, Ill., where the family will receive friends from noon to 1:00 PM.

The Funeral Service for Miss Thomas will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 5, at the Burnside Christian Church in Burnside, with the Reverend Charles W. Stevens, of the Riverside Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Thornber Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Irene Broeg

Irene Pearl Broeg, age 72, of Burlington, passed away at 6:15 PM Thursday, August 3, 2000, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center.

Born April 25, 1928, in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of Charles Fred and Mary Frances Kolkman Barkus. On July 11, 1948, she married Paul O. Broeg in Yarmouth.

Mrs. Broeg was a graduate of Yarmouth High School. She had worked for Waldorf Drug Store, Midwest Biscuit for 8 1/2 years and Elm View Care Center for 13 years, all of Burlington.

She was a member of the West Burlington Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Paul; three sons, Jack Broeg of Burlington, and Dan Broeg and Donald Broeg, both of West Burlington; two daughters, Lynn Schnellbacher of Del City, OK, and Susan Broeg of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Mason of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Visitation will begin after 8:00 AM Monday, August 7, at the Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 PM

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Broeg will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 7, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Reverend Jack Howard of the West Burlington Christian Church officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Cemetery , Mount Union.

A memorial has been established.

Marina Trepanier

Marina Trepanier, 53 of Leesville, formerly of Washington and Burlington, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2000 at the Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital in Fort Polk, La.

Born December 4, 1946, in Washington, she was the daughter of Manuel and Virginia Leffler McKune.

Mrs. Trepanier was a caring, loving mother and loved being around people.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip; three daughters, Lela Capper of Washington, Donna Traman of Fort Madison and Corrine Trepanier of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Howard Erdman Jr. of Winfield and Doug Erdman of Brighton; five brothers, Jerry McKune of Iowa City, Philip McKune and Kevin McKune both of Washington, Roger McKune of Cambridge, Ill., and Leonard McKune of Altus, Okla.; two sisters, Janet Rice of Morning Sun and Jane Threlkeld of Washington; her stepmother, Jean Crotts of Stronghurst, Ill.; three half-brothers, Danny McKune of Oquawka, Ill., Donald McKune of Burlington and David McKune of Bedias, Texas; one half-sister, Diane Strange of Stronghurst, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister and an infant grandchild.

Interment was July 12 in Pine Island Cemetery , Pickerling, La.

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Trepanier will be at 9:00 AM Saturday, July 22 in Sunset Park in Washington.

A memorial has been established.

Alex Malnar Sr.

Alex Malnar Sr., age 53 of Des Moines, formerly of Burlington passed away at 9:10 PM Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Critical Care Unit in Des Moines as the result of an accidental fall off of a bridge in Des Moines.

Born December 31, 1946 in Salzburg, Austria, he was the son of Alex and Alexandria Malnar Bogalini. On August 13, 1955 he married Donna A. Sowden in Swanton, IA. They later divorced.

Mr. Malnar joined the US Army on June 13, 1967 and was honorably discharged June 12, 1970. He served one tour of duty in Vietnam. He was a weapons Specialist and a Medic Specialist. He was a Maintenance worker while in Des Moines and had worked for a tree service while living in Burlington.

He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors, he was very artistic and a great cook.

Survivors include two sons, Alex Steven Malnar Jr. of Wever and Danny James Malnar of West Burlington; one daughter, Tammy Rosas of West Burlington; three grandchildren; three brothers, Victor Malnar and Rudy Malnar both of Toledo, Ohio, and Nick Malnar of Florida; one sister, Olga Malnar of Toledo, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation. The body of Mr. Malnar has been cremated.

The Memorial Service for Mr. Malnar will be Thursday, September 14, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Robert M. Housby, Minister will officiate. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the VFW Posts 10102 and 9162 at the Funeral Home.

Inurnment will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 19, in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Ruth Brinkley

Ruth E. Brinkley, age 77 of the Danville Care Center, passed away at 8:50 AM Tuesday, August 15, 2000 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 19, 1923 in Davenport, she was the daughter of Louis and Edith Thomas Roggenkamp. She married Clifford Brinkley in 1948 in Clinton. He died in 1979.

Mrs. Brinkley was self-employed in the restaurant business.

Survivors include a son, William Brinkley of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will begin after 12:30 PM Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Runge Mortuary in Davenport until the service time.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Brinkley will be 2:30 PM Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Runge Mortuary. Interment will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Davenport.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the local arrangements.

Clifford Quakenbush

Clifford P. Quakenbush, age 79 of Burlington passed away at 9:08 PM Sunday, September 17, 2000 at his home surrounded by beloved friends.

Born April 20, 1921 in Burlington, he was the son of Clifford P. and Edith Amelia Hackman Quakenbush. On March 18, 1944 in Burlington he married Mary Louise Galvin. She passed away April 16, 1991.

Mr. Quakenbush had ancestors who were pioneer settlers to Iowa arriving in 1845. He was raised in Greeley, Co. He was a Master Technical Sergeant in WW 2 with the US Marine Corp attached with the First Marines on Henderson Field, Guadal Canal in June 1942. He was honorably discharged in June 1946. He received several Presidential Unit Citations and awarded the Purple Heart. He worked as a Master/Plumber/Fitter with the local 212 which is now the 125 of Cedar Rapids.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 10102, and the American Legion of Farmington. Clifford loved football and all sports. He enjoyed his hobby of sand carving glass.

Survivors include two daughters, Diana Qaukenbush of Marshalltown, and Jill Quakenbush of Coralville; one sister Mary L. Bott of Hawthorne, NV; and several cherished nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by and infant daughter, Nancy and two brothers.

The body of Mr. Quakenbush has been cremated as of his request.

Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 19, at the Quakenbush home, 300 Barrett St.

The Graveside Committal Service and Inurnment for Mr. Quakenbush will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 20, at the Aspen Grove Cemetery , with Reverend Eric M. Cherry officiating. Full military honors will be rendered.

A Memorial has been established to Crossroads Hospice of SE Iowa, 407 South White, Mt. Pleasant, IA 52641.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
