Dorothy Byrd
Dorothy Mae Byrd, 89, of Rock Island, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at River Park Healthcare Center, Rock Island.

Per her wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Cremation rites will be accorded. Interment will be at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to VFW No. 227, East Moline. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.

Dorothy was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Guy and Eunice Draper Burton. She was married to Andrew Byrd in 1960, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in 1968.

Mrs. Byrd and her husband were owners of a construction company in Ottumwa. She later worked as a registered nurse at the former State Hospital, East Moline, and also as a bartender at the Avenue Tap in Silvis, retiring in 1979.

Dorothy enjoyed knitting, reading and was devoted to giving to charitable organizations.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte (George) Harrison, Keosauqua, Iowa; son, Clyde "Bill" Funk, Rock Island; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and a brother.

Harry Carstens Jr.
Harry A. Carstens Jr., 83, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of Rock Island, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at his home.

Funeral services were held in Ohio. Graveside services for friends and family will be at 11 a.m. Monday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Those wishing to attend should meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.

Harry taught and coached for many years in the Rock Island School District. He taught at Washington Junior High School, Rock Island, and W.L. Eddy and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools in Milan. He had resided in West Chester for the past seven years.

Harry was the beloved husband of Joyce R. (nee Miller) Carstens and was the devoted father of Jerry E. (Jean) and Craig M. (Lori) Carstens. He was the loving grandfather of Andy, Lauren, Lindsey, Colin and Kyle Carstens. Harry was the brother of Edwin (Marilyn) and Robert (Peg) Carstens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Thaddeus Perlinski
Thaddeus H. Perlinski, 86, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Arrangements are pending at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island.

Keith Peterson
Keith L. Peterson, 77, of Urbana, Ill., died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at home after a short-lived battle with ALS.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Urbana. The Rev. Robert Rasmus will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign, Ill. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, Urbana. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or the Carl Hospice Memorial Fund.

Keith was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Rock Island, the son of Philip and Albertina Carlson Peterson. He married Joan M. Hanson on June 27, 1953, in Wahoo, Neb., and celebrated 54 years of marriage.

Keith attended Luther Jr. College and Augustana College before graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in architecture. He has been a practicing architect in Urbana and surrounding areas for 43 years. Keith served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and the local Kiwanis Club.

Keith was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed visiting family and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Of all his hobbies, Keith particularly enjoyed creating his art, which over the last 10 years became a great passion. Other interests included attending Illini sporting events, watching the Chicago Cubs, golf, fishing and playing bridge with his dear friends.

Keith will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Kurt T. (Kathy) Peterson, Mt. Prospect, Ill., and Eric M. (Carol Ray) Peterson, Seattle, Wash.; daughter, Lori D. (David Morrison) Peterson, Seattle; brother, Kenneth Peterson, sister, Joyce Anderson, both of Rock Island; four grandchildren, Emily and Kyle Peterson, Mt. Prospect, and Claudia and Guthrie Morrison, Seattle. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald; and sister, Dorothy.

Berniece Bruner
Berniece P. Bruner, 92, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Pine River, Minn.

Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. There will be a short graveside service for family and friends at a later date.

Berniece was born June 18, 1915, in Cordova, to William and Eva Bruner. She was a graduate of Moline High School.

Berniece worked at John Deere Mallable for 30 years and retired Dec. 31, 1973.

She was a kind and thoughtful person and loved her home on Mule Lake, Minn. Fishing and bird watching were her favorite pasttimes.

Surviving are nephew, Rodney Bruner; nieces, Julie Simmons and Mona Burmood; and a very special friend, Elizabeth Wright. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Beulah Bennett; and a brother, Richard Bruner.

Elsie Impens
Elsie M. Impens, 98, of Moline, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Friday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

Angeline Banks
Funeral services for Angeline Madeline Banks, 89, formerly of Cleveland, Ill., and Silvis, are 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Colona.

Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Church or to Meals on Wheels of Rock Island County.

Angeline died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Sunrise Assisted Living South, Ann Arbor, Mich.

Angeline DeSutter was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Moline, the daughter of Maurice and Mary Grymonprez DeSutter. She attended St. Mary's High School in East Moline. In the 1940s, she was employed at International Harvester. Angeline married John R. Banks on Oct. 15, 1949, at St. John's Church in Woodhull. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. The couple lived in Cleveland until just before John passed away on Nov. 30, 2000.

Angeline was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary society for more than 50 years -- and had a special love of saying the rosary daily. During her later years in Ann Arbor, she loved to attend the weekly St. Thomas Aquinas communion services at Sunrise, and to take the Sunrise bus with other residents over to St. Francis Church on Sunday mornings. She enjoyed community volunteer work, senior citizens' groups, gardening and bowling. Angeline was a caring "grandmother" to many Youth for Understanding high school exchange students -- including Theresa, Anke and Isabell from Germany, Anna from Finland, Tamara from Bosnia, Elle-Mall from Estonia, Sylvia from Brazil, Josie from Chile, and Richard and Jessie from China.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Jeff Gaynor and stepgranddaughter, Claire, Ann Arbor; sisters, Marcella DeBuysere, Silvis, Marian (Jim) Bugos, Alpha, and Irene Nelson, Abingdon, Ill.; and brothers, Joseph (MaryAnn) DeSutter, Kewanee, Francis (Isabell) DeSutter, Middletown, Mo., and Maurice (Darlene) DeSutter Jr., Woodhull; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She also will be missed by many devoted Sunrise staff members and her close friend and caregiver, Janet Bensen.

Steven Briggs
Steven C. Briggs, 59, of Lynn Center, died Oct. 8, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion. Private burial will be at Western Township cemetery . Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or charity of choice.

Steven was born Nov. 23, 1947, in Moline, to Curtis L. and Janis M. Bloomberg Briggs. He married Nancy Coyne in May of 1977 in Moline.

Steve currently was employed at B & W Construction in Moline. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast.

He was a member of Valley View Country Club, Cambridge, and Orion High School Hall of Fame.

Steven is survived by sister, Sandy Bristow, Houston, Texas; uncle, Gerald Bloomberg, Rock Island; nieces and nephews, Jason Bristow, Houston, Lisa (Ash) Yoder, Houston, Aaron (Erin) Tennant, Orion, Christopher Tennant, Orion, David (Emily) Tennant, Coal Valley; two great-nieces, Olivia Tennant, Orion, Emma Yoder, Houston; two great-nephews, Justin Bristow, Houston, Joshua Bristow, Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas Briggs.

Kenneth Jacks
Kenneth N. Jacks, 74, of Matherville, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at his home.

Private burial is in the National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island.

Kenneth was born Dec. 2, 1932, in Rock Island, a son of Fremont and Sylvia Gibson Jacks. He married the former Wanda Darling.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. Ken was a member of Rock Island American Legion Post 200 and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed caring for his cats.

Survivors include his daughters, Colleen Bourdeau, Davenport, and Kelly Harty, Prophetstown; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law, Jake and Marilyn Jacks, Davenport; and sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Jack Dierolf, Ridgecrest, Calif.

Patsy Kerner
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, surrounded by her loving family, Patsy Jo Flack Kerner, 66, of New Windsor, was received into the arms of our Heavenly Father after a two-year, spirited, courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of her life will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in New Windsor with the Rev. Jane McChesney officiating. Burial is in the Grace Lutheran cemetery in Ophiem. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Alpha, where a memorial fund will be established. Born in her parents farm house near Lafayette, Ill., on June 8, 1941, she was named Patsy Jo by her parents, Arthur L. and Lucille Powell Flack. She graduated from AlWood High School in 1959 and on Sept. 4, 1960, she was united in marriage to Donald D. Kerner at the Calvary Lutheran Church in New Windsor.

She was a seamstress at Formfit in Monmouth and sewed uniforms in Petersburg, Va., while her husband was stationed in the military there. Patsy worked in Lydia Olin's restaurant in New Windsor, and for many years she was employed at Rutledge's Nursery in Alpha.

Patsy was a very active member of Calvary Lutheran Church for more than 60 years, where she served as secretary of Fern Mar, helped at the New Windsor Fair and Rodeo church tent and assisted with the blood drive.

For many years she took entries in the New Windsor Fair Floral Department and won many ribbons for her flowers and veggies. She enjoyed sewing, collecting cookbooks, raising her sheep, square dancing with the Gas House Gang of Geneseo, music in the park, traveling and wintering in Florida. Patsy also enjoyed the Spoon River Drive, the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and she loved to be with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Donald, who supported her faithfully and compassionately throughout her illness; her brother, Arthur Gary Flack, Orion; a sister, Virginia (Billy G) Shaffer, Moline; a niece, Stephanie (Todd) Larssen, Long Grove; mother-in-law, Olena Kerner, Gregory, S.D.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James and Wanda Kerner, Port Byron, Eugene and Joan Kerner, Chadron, Neb., Mary Lou Kerner, Annawan, Vernon and Charlotte Kerner and Verna Cernetisch, all of Gregory, Curtis and Kary Kerner and Janice and Gary Travnicek, all of Dallas, S.D.; and several very special nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

The family would like to thank and give a special hug to Pastor Jane McChesney, all the doctors, nurses and staffs at the Cancer Center at the University of Iowa, Trinity East in Moline and the Clarissa Cook Hospice in Bettendorf.

Wilma `Billie' Peterson
Wilma "Billie" Peterson, 83, of Colonial Park Care Center, Harrisburg, Pa., formerly of Kewanee, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at the center.

Arrangements are pending at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee.

Blaine Richardson
Blaine Richardson, 22, of Viola, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday and services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola, where further arrangements are pending.

Stuart Stout
Stuart D. Stout, 78, of Cleveland, Ill., died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Sullivan-Phillips Mortuary, East Moline.

Walter `Boe' Whipple
Walter L. "Boe" Whipple, 36, of Carbon Cliff, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his children.

Boe was born May 15, 1971, in Moline, to Walter E. and Cheryl Dietsch Whipple.

He was a construction roofer for Winters Architectural Roofing in Carbon Cliff.

Boe enjoyed watching football, especially the Bears. He was also a fan of Jeff Gordon and liked playing golf. We love ya and will miss you. "Love ya more!"

He is survived by his children, Christianna Crosby, Alicia Sutton, Alexis Whipple, Dakota Whipple and Boe Whipple; father, Walt Whipple Jr.; fiancee, Heather Attwood; sisters, Tracy Carbis, Sandy Robinson and Debbie Grapp; brothers, John Whipple and Richard Whipple. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Lawrence Cosselman
Lawrence H. Cosselman, 73, of Muscatine, passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Graveside services will be at a later date in Woodlawn cemetery , Oelwein, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.

Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Franklin Hartley
Franklin B. Hartley, 77, of Davenport, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home.

There will be no services. Arrangements are by Weerts, Davenport.

He was born in 1929, to Phillip and Violet Hartley. He married Dorothy L. Petersen on Aug. 13, 1949, in Iowa City.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Diana Hartley, Madeline Torres and Franklin D. Hartley, all of Davenport; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Woodford, Long Grove; and brothers, Donald Hartley, Bloomfield, Colo., and Wally McCormick, Davenport.
