Joseph Correll
Joseph W. Correll, 36, of Geneseo passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at the scene of a motorcycle accident at the interchange of Illinois 92 and 88 in rural Rock Island County.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. Deacon Harley Chaffee will officiate. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to service time at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Joseph Correll Memorial Fund. Inurnment will be a later date. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services.

Joe was born Aug. 30, 1971, in Mattoon, Ill., the son of Bernard and Rosalie Schwerman Correll. He was a 1990 graduate of the J.D. Darnell High School. He was currently employed as a truck driver for Neumann Farms, Geneseo. Joe was of the Catholic faith and was baptized in St. Malachy's Church. He was a member of the Harley Davidson owners Group, and was an avid motorcycle rider.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Bernard and Deborah Correll, Geneseo; one daughter, Amanda Correll, Geneseo; one sister, Angie Correll, Geneseo, one brother, B.J. Correll, Katy, Texas; two stepsisters, Angie Minton, Auburn, Ill., and Lola Hanson, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosalie Correll, in 1994; one sister; and his grandparents.

Lorraine Moore
Lorraine M. Moore, 66, of Eldridge died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.

John `Johnnie' Shivers
John W. "Johnnie" Shivers, 60, of Davenport died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Orr's Mortuary, Rock Island.

Marcella `Marcie' Vieth
Marcella "Marcie" Vieth, 87, of Davenport died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.

Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport.

William Byles
William E. Byles, 51, of Rock Island, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice, Bettendorf, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established for his daughter Kaysie's education.

Bill was born Oct. 22, 1955, in Rock Island, the son of William L. and Doris Moore Byles. He married Kathleen Tracy March 2, 1996, in Milan.

Bill was employed as a maintenance director at the Fort Armstrong Senior Residence in Rock Island, after retiring as an officer and detective with the East Moline Police Department.

Bill attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Milan, and enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; three daughters, Miranda, Michelle and Kaysie Byles; one grandson, Christian Durham; his father, William L. Byles, and his wife, Doris J.; his sister and her husband, Kim and Ken Nelson; two nephews, Michael and Daniel Nelson; aunt, Sharon Snyder; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Barnett; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Helen Sabbe. He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris M. Byles on Dec. 27, 1985.

Margaret DeSmet Gressman
Margaret DeSmet Gressman, 96, of Rock Island, passed away Oct. 6, 2007, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Spina Bifida Association of Illinois.

Margaret was born Dec. 19, 1910, to Thomas Hauman and Romanie DeKoster Hauman. One of eight children, she is the last to survive. She married Rene DeSmet Oct. 7, 1927, in Prophetstown. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Rock Island, where they both lived their entire lives. Mr. DeSmet died in July 1969. She married Robert Gressman in 1981, and he preceded her in death in September 2005.

She was employed at Servus Rubber Co. for a few years before going to work as a machinist at Farmall during World War II. She retired in 1975 after 27 years of service.

Margaret and Rene were active members of the Belgian American Brotherhood, where she served as president of the club's auxiliary. The Gressmans moved to North Hill Retirement Center, East Moline, in 2000.

Surviving are two children, son, Richard DeSmet and wife, Marietta, Rock Island, and daughter, Irene Haskins, Columbia, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Diana Gaymon, Orion, and Mary Ann Schneider, East Moline; five grandchildren, Denny, Ric and Jeff DeSmet and Laurie Matthews and Matt Haskins; two stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert, in infancy; a granddaughter, Deborah Kaskadden; two great-grandchildren, Johnnie Kaskadden and Crystal DeSmet; and her seven siblings.

Margaret loved to watch the Cubs and go fishing. A devoted mother and grandmother, she will be dearly missed by all her family.

Elizabeth Mack
Elizabeth A. "Betty" Mack, 75, of Rock Island, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at her home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was very courageous in her brief battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a rosary recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Memorials may be left to Sacred Heart Parish, Rock Island.

Betty was born June 4, 1932, in Corydon, Ind., the daughter of Oscar and Mary Ernstberger Hauswald. She married Vernon E. Mack Feb. 14, 1956.

Mrs. Mack graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing, Louisville, Ky., and continued her nursing career at the former Lutheran Hospital, Moline. She was a registered nurse at several physicians' offices in Rock Island and retired from McLaughlin Body Co., Moline, as an industrial nurse in 1992.

Betty was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. She was a lector and, along with other members of the Ladies Sodality, was involved with many successful fundraisers. She had been active president for 11 years of the Ladies Sodality. Betty was also a member of the Aim and Fire bowling league, serving as president and secretary at times.

She enjoyed gardening, arranging her own hanging baskets, reading and researching information on the Internet to complete family genealogy about her loved ones.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Vern; daughters and son-in-law, Susan Mack, Rock Island, Kathy and Dan Miner, Cary, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Joni Mack, Moline; grandchildren, Amy, Betsy and Charlie Mack, Moline, Dan Jr. and Jenna Miner, Cary, Ill.; sisters and spouses, Barbara and Ben Freeman, Louisville, Ky., Dot Thomas, Sellersburg, Ind., Marge and Bob Warner, Rockton, Ill.; brothers and spouse, Charles and Lillian Hauswald, Jim Hauswald, both of Corydon, Ind.; sister-in-law, Joyce Shredl, Cresthill, Ill.; many nieces and nephews; and a good friend, Elaine Scott. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Martha Hauswald and Kathleen Cook.

The family would like to thank Beacon of Hope Hospice for their support and quick response to Betty's needs.

Elsa Canedo
Elsa Canedo, 95, died Aug. 11, 2007, in Goodyear, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline.

She was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Nov. 5, 1911. She moved to Arizona about 10 years ago after living in Moline for 32 years.

In Moline, Elsa enjoyed watching horse races at the Quad-City Downs. She was enchanted by the dramatic changes of each season and the different birds that came with those changes.

She is survived by her three children, Amanda (Vincent) Keller, Johny (Mireya) Rios and Fernando (Wilma) Rios; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arlen Green
Arlen Green, 60, of Moline, died Oct. 3, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.

Rite of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, with prayers at 9:30 a.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday with a wake service at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Military rites will be conducted. Memorials may be made to USO (United Service Organization at USO World Headquarters, Dept. WS P.O. Box 96860, Washington, D.C., 20090-6860; checks payable to USO).

Arlen was born April 2, 1947, in Omaha, Neb., to Verl and Lillian Franson Green. He married Rosie Voeller Nov. 17, 1976, in Kennett, Mo.

Arlen was a supply sergeant/readiness NCO for the U.S. Army National Guard, retiring Aug. 8, 2005. Arlen, a Bronze Star recipient, proudly served during the Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Arlen was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline.

He enjoyed playing his guitar and was in a band for many years.

He is survived by wife, Rosie, Moline; daughter, Jamie Green (Michael Bergthold), Davenport; son, Todd Green, Moline; two grandchildren, Gregory and Kayleigh; brother, Kenneth (Judy) Green, Crest Hill, Ill.; sister, Cheryl (Frank) Derby, Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Betty Conway
A memorial Mass of Christian burial for Betty L. Conway, 76, of Bettendorf, will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Davenport. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. In keeping with Betty's wishes, she bequeathed her body to the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Betty died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Bettendorf Healthcare Center after an extended illness.

She was born July 8, 1931, in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Survivors include her sister, Theresa Yeager, Davenport; and a brother, George Conway, Bettendorf; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Jean Caywood, Bettendorf.

Phyllis Fagin
Phyllis Fagin, 92, of Davenport, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, Omaha, Neb.

Private graveside services will be held at Mount Nebo cemetery , Davenport. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at Weerts Funeral Home, 3625 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Temple Emanuel or the University of Iowa Crohn's Disease Research Fund.

Mrs. Fagin was born in 1915 to Wilfred and Ann Weinstein in Davenport. She married Max Nicoll Fagin Aug. 20, 1937, in Davenport. He died Oct. 27, 1989.

She was a member of Temple Emanuel, Davenport, the Temple Emanuel Sisterhood, and Hadassah.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra (Larry) Maschino, Cave Creek, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Susan Fagin, University Park, Ill.; grandchildren, David (Suzanne) Maschino, Phoenix, Ariz., Barbara Murvihilll, Steger, Ill., and Sam Fagin, University Park; great-grandson, Alex Wommack, Steger; sister, Bobette (Norbert) Mattes, Bettendorf; and sister-in-law, Jane Weinstein, Davenport. In addition to her husband, Max, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Fagin in 2001, and a brother, Darrel Weinstein.

Sharon Fowler
Sharon Fowler, 83, of Davenport, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Genesis West, Davenport.

Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport.

She was born Oct. 20, 1923. She married Gordon Fowler in 1950.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon; a sister, Estelle, Dallas, Texas; son, Keith, Dallas; daughters, Paula Witt and husband, Bradley, Davenport and Linda Young, Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren.

Roy May-Coats
Roy May-Coats, infant son of Melissa May and Tyrone Coats of Davenport, died after birth Oct. 4, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.

Memorial services after cremation will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Runge Mortuary Chapel, Davenport. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Roy always will be cherished by his loving parents and family.

Those left to honor his memory include his parents; sisters, Tyshika and Dorshay; brothers, Charleston and Tyrone Jr.; maternal grandparents, Patrice Xuereb and Thomas May; and paternal grandparents, Lavern and Harold Brooks, all of Davenport.

Clifford Ritter
Clifford R. Ritter, 75, of Bettendorf, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Pathway Hospice, Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Cliff was born April 12, 1932. He married Rozema "Rosie" Strong Aug. 14, 1954.

Surviving are his wife; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Dan Hoover, Bettendorf; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Monica Ritter, Bettendorf; eight grandchildren; sister, Stella Miller, Ava, Mo.; brother, Bob Ritter, Bettendorf.

Ruth Rittmanic
Ruth M. Rittmanic, of Davenport, died Oct. 4, 2007. Her husband of 47 years passed away one week ago, Sept. 27, 2007.

Visitation is 3 to 5 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries, Davenport, with a 5 p.m. prayer service. Following cremation rites, services are 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

She was born March 29, 1937. She married George Rittmanic.

Surviving are children, Kay Picolet and her husband, Ron, Eldridge, Julie Bates, Bettendorf, Linda Rittmanic, Walcott; four grandchildren; brother, Neal McKinney, Wheaton, Ill.

Geraldine Johnson
Geraldine G. "Gerry" Johnson, 86, a lifelong resident of Rock Island, passed away Oct. 4, 2007, at Friendship Manor/Silver Cross Nursing Center, Rock Island.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th Ave., Milan, with visitation one hour before services Tuesday. Burial will be in Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Geraldine Grace Lundberg was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Rock Island, a daughter of Joseph and Grace Lundberg. She was a 1939 graduate of Rock Island High School. She pursued her nursing degree at St. Anthony's School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse in 1941. She married Walter Charles Johnson Sept. 16, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1987.

Gerry retired from Franciscan Medical Center in 1985. She continued to volunteer with Franciscan Auxiliary, area food banks, and was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Gerry will be remembered as someone who always had a smile on her face and loved to compliment everyone. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all.

Surviving are one son and two daughters (and spouses), Mark (Pat) Johnson, Rock Island, Carol (Kenneth) Roberge, Aledo, Julie Johnson and David Harris, Muscatine, Iowa; grandchildren, Kenneth (Amy) Roberge, Matherville, Stephanie (Scott) Teal, St. Petersburg, Fla., Jennifer Johnson, Davenport, Leesa Wilson, Davenport, and Erin Johnson, Rock Island; 21 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Delores "Squirt" Wynn, Milan.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at Friendship Manor and Heartland Hospice. Special thanks to Dr. Thakkar for being with our mother through the years.

Raze Rice
Raze B. Rice, 80, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Pathway Hospice, Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Chippiannock cemetery , Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Rice was born March 13, 1927, in Homer, La., the son of Sidney and Lena Jefferson Rice. He married Bertha Webster in 1951 in Muscatine. She died Aug. 15, 1998.

Before retiring, Raze was a self-employed repairman for appliances and electronics in the Rock Island area for many years.

Survivors and spouses are daughters, Billie and David Glidewell, Milan, Gail and Larry Fulton, Shirley and Tony Henderson, all of Rock Island; sons, Arthur and Wanda Rice, Dale Rice, Sidney Rice and Darrell Rice, all of Rock Island; mother, Lena Wafer, Rock Island; 23 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; daughter-in-law, Mary Bursey, Rock Island; dear friend, Inez Miller, Rock Island; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was preceded in death by daughter, Debra Rice; son, Willie Bursey; brother, Willie; sister, Honey; father, Sidney; stepfather, Burl Wafer; daughter-in-law, Oleva Rice.
