Karen Getz
Karen H. Getz, 70, of Moline, well-known community leader, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church, Moline, with the Rev. Allen Mothershed officiating. Burial is in Oakwood cemetery , Geneseo. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to Quad City Arts or The Moline Foundation.

Karen was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 20, 1937, to Ezra and Olive Wright Hartman. She grew up in the Hyde Park area on the south side of Chicago and graduated from Hyde Park High School.

She was employed in the advertising business with McCann Erickson in Chicago for more than 17 years. She became their food stylist, preparing food for photography in magazine and television ads.

Karen was an avid sailor and met her future husband, Tom Getz, while sailing in a Detroit-to-Mackinac Island race. They were married Dec. 26, 1973, in Arlington Heights, Ill.

After moving to the Quad-Cities, she became involved in many community activities and treasured the large circle of friends she grew to know and cherish. She was on the board of directors or a trustee of Arrowhead Ranch, the Moline Foundation, the former Mark of the Quad Cities, U.S. Bank, Quad City Symphony Orchestra, Putnam Museum, Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau, Bettendorf Family Museum and Marriage and Family Counseling Service.

Karen was a member of First Congregational Church, Moline, Tri-City Garden Club and The Outing Club.

She was devoted to the Quad City Arts Festival of Trees, which became nearly a full-time job for her for most of 18 years. She was the director of the festival from 1991 through 1994 and stayed involved on the Festival Steering Committee and as director of sponsorships and co-chair of designer recruitment through 2003.

On Jan. 30, 2004, Karen and her husband, Tom, were in a serious automobile accident. She slowly recovered but never regained her full strength and awareness.

She is survived by her husband; stepchildren and their spouses, Dr. Thomas Getz and Margaret Burrows-Getz, East Grand Rapids, Mich., Bettina Getz and Bill Judge, River Forest, Ill., and Christopher Getz, Melbourne, Fla.; sisters, Maurine Dempsey McCullough, Winfield, Ill., and Barbara Packer and her husband, Jack, Arlington Heights; a sister-in-law, Barbara O'Leary; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, David.

Rudy Sebelien
Rudy D. Sebelien, 55, of Moline, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at his home.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Burial is in Coal Valley cemetery . Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Rudy Dean Sebelien was born Nov. 11, 1951, in Moline, the son of Rudy and Edna Townsend Sebelien. He graduated from Moline High School in 1970. He married Debra Bowen in 1998 in Rock Island.

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was a machinist at John Deere for 32 years, retiring in 2005.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Debra; his mother, Edna Sebelien, Coal Valley; several stepchildren; and stepbrothers and sisters-in-law, John and Dawn Turkal, Rapids City, Donald and Sharon Turkal, Davenport, and Ed Turkal, Texas.

Adolph Sovanski
Funeral services for Adolph J. Sovanski, 95, of Moline, are 10 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline.

Mr. Sovanski died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. A memorial fund has been established.

Adolph was born May 10, 1912, in Kewanee, the son of Joseph and Rose Mahalik Sovanski. He married Clara Hamilton Nov. 12, 1938, in Kewanee.

He worked as a truck driver at Dohrn Transfer, Central Transfer and later retired from Standard Forwarding. Adolph was a member of Teamsters Local 371.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Clara; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Raynold Runge, Durant; sons and daughter-in-law, Albert and Maggie Sovanski, Coal Valley, and Gregory, Moline; grandchildren, Diane, Sara, Chad, Wendy, Mary and Ron; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, three sisters and grandchildren, John and Shawn.

William Layman
Funeral services for William W. "Bill" Layman, 84, of East Moline, will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery , East Moline. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m.

Mr. Layman died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis. Memorials may be made to the Monsignor Cleary Endowment Fund or to the family.

Bill was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Moline, the son of William M. and Violet Warren Layman. He married Josephine Marx March 2, 1946, in East Moline. She died Dec. 22, 1999.

He was a graduate of United Township High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an electrician's mate third class, stationed in the Tinian Islands in the Marianas. He worked as an electrician at Farmall in Rock Island for 42 years.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Amvets.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his children and attending all activities of his grandchildren. He loved watching them play baseball, basketball, soccer, and UT Panthers Marching Band. He enjoyed fishing. He was known to many by the hat he wore with the inscription "Just Call Me Grandpa." Bill was a wonderful caretaker of others for many years.

Survivors include daughter, Lori Ann Howard, East Moline; son, William D., East Moline; grandchildren (spouse), Bill, Matthew and Zachary Layman, Katie (Brett) Ommen, Shaun Slonecker and Ryan Howard; great-grandchildren, Avelyne Walk, Dylan Joe Slonecker and Augustine E. Ommen; son-in-law, Frank Slonecker, Hampton; sisters-in-law, Barbara Miller, Rock Island, Helen Coones, Kansas; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and daughter, Linda Slonecker.

David Bergevin Sr.
David Loren Bergevin Sr., 69, passed away Oct. 4, 2007, at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, following an extended Illness.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Strawser Funeral Home, 9503 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 8645 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, OH 45236. Burial will be in Hopewell cemetery . Memorials may be made to Radio Station WDLM, P.O. Box 149, East Moline, IL, 61244, or Mount Carmel Baptist Church Growth Fund.

Mr. Bergevin was born in Waukegan, Ill., Aug. 24, 1938. He attended grade school and high school in Zion, Ill. He graduated from Bob Jones University with a bachelor's degree in Bible and English and a master's degree in Bible in 1962.

He married Alice Skinner Aug. 4, 1960. He served three churches as minister of youth and music in Florida, Iowa and Indiana between 1963 and 1969.

He joined Moody Bible Institute's radio station WDLM in the Quad-Cities in 1969 and worked for 33 years as assistant manager and announcer. He was well-known in the Quad-Cities area by his radio voice and well-loved by his audience. He also served several churches in the area as Bible teacher and choir director, including 22 years with First Baptist Church of Muscatine, Iowa.

He and his wife moved to Cincinnati in October 2005 to be near family members. He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Cincinnati.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, Cincinnati; daughters, Lorraine Bergevin, Cincinnati, and Elizabeth (Craig) Haigh, Hanover Park, Ill.; and a son, David (Cynthia) Bergevin Jr., Cincinnati. He is also survived by six grandchildren, one sister, four brothers and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Nellie Williams
Nellie M. Williams, 91, of Erie, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center, Prophetstown.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Burial will be in Sharon cemetery , Erie. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie Ambulance Service.

The former Nellie Mildred Roselieb was born Aug. 7, 1916, in Prophetstown, the daughter of William Oscar and Anna Horton Roselieb. She married Herbert Williams May 15, 1937, in Forreston, Ill. He died in 1983.

She had been employed at the former Erie Dry Goods and had also done babysitting. Mrs. Williams was a member of Erie Christian Church.

She enjoyed collecting stuffed bears, sewing and gardening, especially her flowers, but most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Susan Williams, Sterling, Ill., and Stuart Williams, Erie; grandchildren, Travis, Erin and Trent Williams; and great-grandchildren, Addisyn and Austyn. She was preceded in death by a great-grandchild, four sisters and seven brothers.

Robert Wilson
Robert L. Wilson, 65, of Galesburg, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Hurd-Hendricks, Knoxville. Vistation will be 9:30 a.m. until services at the funeral home. Burial is in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, with military rites.

He was born March 28, 1942.

Survivors include wife, Patricia; sons, Kevin M. Wilson, Galesburg, Randy L. (Allison) Wilson, Galesburg; grandchildren, Connor Patrick Wilson, Galesburg, Victoria A. Wilson, West Virginia; mother, Beverly A. Wilson, Galesburg.

Phyllis Fagin
Phyllis Fagin, 92, of Davenport, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, Omaha, Neb.

Private graveside services will be held at Mount Nebo cemetery , Davenport. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Weerts Funeral Home, 3625 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Temple Emanuel or the University of Iowa Crohn's Disease Research Fund.

Mrs. Fagin was born in 1915 to Wilfred and Ann Weinstein in Davenport. She married Max Nicoll Fagin Aug. 20, 1937, in Davenport. He died Oct. 27, 1989.

She was a member of Temple Emanuel, Davenport, the Temple Emanuel Sisterhood, and Hadassah.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra (Larry) Maschino, Cave Creek, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Susan Fagin, University Park, Ill.; grandchildren, David (Suzanne) Maschino, Phoenix, Ariz., Barbara Murvihilll, Steger, Ill., and Sam Fagin, University Park; great-grandson, Alex Wommack, Steger; sister, Bobette (Norbert) Mattes, Bettendorf; and sister-in-law, Jane Weinstein, Davenport. In addition to her husband, Max, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Fagin in 2001, and a brother, Darrel Weinstein.

George Johnson
George E. Johnson, 86, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at Bettendorf Health Care Center.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at National cemetery , Arsenal Island. Those wishing to attend should meet at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, by 9:40 a.m. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans.

George Emery Johnson was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Quincy, Ill., the son of George and Mary Esther McPhail Johnson. He married Adrienne A. Boquet June 26, 1943, in Puget Sound, Wash. She died Dec. 31, 1996.

He served in the U.S. Navy on PT Boat 222 during World War II. He was a serviceman for IBM for 30 years. He enjoyed watching golf, basketball and baseball on television.

George is survived by four sons, Steven Johnson, Moline, Mike Johnson, Madison, Wis., David Johnson, Camanche, Iowa, and Tim Johnson, Bettendorf; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Jewel Schiff, longtime companion with whom he shared many fond memories.

Clifford Ritter
Clifford R. Ritter, 75, of Bettendorf, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Pathway Hospice, Trinity at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.

Arrangements are pending at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.

Dwight D. Kistler, 79, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Town and Country, Missouri. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 14th, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Siteman Cancer Center, (Washington University, 1 Brooking Dr., St. Louis, MO 63130).

Mr. Kistler was born in 1929 to Boyd and Viola Kistler in Buffalo Prairie, Illinois. He married Kathryn “Kay” Raiber on September 12, 1948 in Calamus, Iowa. He was a brick mason with Local #7, Rock Island, IL, for 40 years, retiring in 1989. Other memberships included Christ United Methodist Church, Davenport, and the Elks Lodge, Davenport. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood carving, traveling, and visiting his children and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Kay; daughters, Mary McMeekin of Davenport, and Kandace (David) Asmus of Chesterfield, Missouri; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Byron Kistler of Oak Harbor, Washington.

Catherine L. “Katie” Thoensen, 81, of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at her home. Celebration of Life memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 17th at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street, Davenport. A memorial gathering will be held from 4-7:00 P.M. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Burial will be at the National cemetery , Rock Island, Illinois. Katie’s family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Harrison Elementary School Library.

Katie was born in 1927 to Arthur and Della Goetsch. She married Reinhart “Ron” Thoensen on October 7, 1945, and celebrated 61 years of marriage. He died May 4, 2007. She worked as a warranty clerk for Lujacks, but especially took great pleasure in her home and family. Time spent in her yard, and the compliments from her friends and neighbors, brought her great joy. She and Ron never tired of creating beautiful gardens in their yard and were the recipients many times over of community beautification awards. Katie had been a volunteer for the “Listen to Me Read” program at Harrison Elementary and was surprised to be awarded a volunteer award by the Davenport Schools.

Survivors include her daughters, Janet K. Bloom of Lenoir, NC, and Jean A. Thoensen-Reller of Davenport; grandsons, Brandon Reller of Davenport, and Ben Reller of Moline; sister, Joyce (Delmar) Lybarger of Davenport; aunt, Rachel Koellner of West Liberty, IA; and nieces, Joydel Taylor and Nancy Glass, both of Goldsboro, NC.

KATHLEEN (KATHY) NEWELL
1935 - 2009

Kathleen "Kathy" Newell, 73, of Davenport, Iowa, died Friday, February 13, 2009, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Genesis VNA, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 - 7:00 P.M. Monday, February 16, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. No services will be held. Burial will be in the Indianola I.O.O.F. cemetery , Indianola, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Kathy was born in 1935 in Iowa Falls, Iowa to Leslie and Doris Betcher. In her early childhood years, she lived in South America with her parents who were employed by the State Department. She married Robert "Bob" Newell on May 30, 1953 in Indianola. After their marriage, Kathy began teaching as an elementary teacher in various Iowa schools including: New Virgina, LaPorte City, Cedar Falls, Creston and Davenport. From 1968, she taught in the Davenport Community School District at Madison and Eisenhower Schools, retiring in 1993. She was nominated for the Golden Apple Award. She was a member of the PTA, NEA, ISEA. She was the scheduler for the Eisenhower Birthday Club for Retired Teachers. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, sewing, painting and singing in the CASI Chorus. She loved time spent with her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gregg Newell (1989), her parents, and a brother, Dr. Daniel Betcher. Survivors include her husband, Bob; daughter, Sharon (Jeffery) Holle; and son, Brad Newell, all of Davenport; grandchildren, Alyssa (Andy) Skahill, Joe (Nicole) Holle, Aron Holle, Jacob West, Stuart West, Brianna Newell, and Alex Newell; great-grandchild, Tate Skahill; and nieces and nephews.

AGNES MILLS
1923 - 2009

Agnes Mills, 85,of Walcott, Iowa, died Sunday, February 15, 2009 at Bettendorf Health Care Center. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, February 19th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Blue Grass cemetery , Blue Grass, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the American Arthritis Foundation.

Mrs. Mills was born in 1923 in Temple, Michigan. She married Hilbert Mills on October 12, 1939 in Rock Island, Illinois. He died December 17, 1998. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Davenport. Agnes was well known for her excellent cooking and baking skills. She was also rather proficient in sewing, arts and crafts. She had a great love for animals and had an assortment of pets ranging from dogs, cats, parakeets, rabbits, a turkey, a pig, a peacock, baby lamb and a pet rooster.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Baker of Davenport; step-daughter, Pat Schaffer of Texas; sons, William H. (Pat) Mills of Blue Grass, Richard Mills of Davenport, and Ronald Mills of Plant City, Florida; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Eva Anderson of Midland, Michigan; and daughter-in-law, Pam Mills of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, a sister, her son, Robert (2/10/2009), and a granddaughter, Angie Mills (1984).

CHARLOTTE LEWIS
1920 - 2009

Services: Thursday, February 26, 2009, 10:30 AM at the funeral home
Charlotte Lewis, 88, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Kahl Home, Davenport. Celebration of Life memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 26th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. A memorial gathering will be held from 4-7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in California at a later date. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the Scott County Humane Society, the Alzheimer’s Association or a favorite charity.

Mrs. Lewis was born in 1920 in Somerville, Massachusetts to Harris and Dora Gordon. She married Sidney Lewis on December 7, 1941 in Brookline, Massachusetts. He died April of 1971. She graduated in 1940 with a general certificate from Howard Seminary, but devoted her career to raising her family. She also enjoyed fishing, listening to Frank Sinatra, watching Tiger Woods, doing needlepoint, collecting quadruple plate silver, and loving her family and animals.

Survivors include sons, Howard (Roxana) Lewis of Los Angeles, CA, Mark Lewis of Houston, TX, and his daughter, Lisa Lewis of New York, NY; Alan Lewis of San Diego, CA, and Robert (Cindy) Lewis of Bettendorf, and their children Jason Lewis, Bettendorf; Erica (David) Morrow, Minneapolis, MN; and Lauren Lewis, New York, NY; and great-granddaughter, Junia Charlotte Morrow. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Elliot Gordon.
