HENRY B. SALTHUN
1908 - 2008

A Celebration of Life memorial service for Henry B. Salthun, 99, Davenport, will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 23rd, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. The Rev. George White will preside. Friends and family are invited to gather one hour before to greet one another to share and remember Henry. Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport, or to The Kahl Home for the Aged and Infirm, Davenport.

Following a brief illness, Henry died Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Kahl Home, Davenport, five days short of his 100th birthday. His body was cremated. Interment will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport.

Henry Bernard Salthun was born in 1908 to Carl and Lena Salthun in Albert Lea, Minnesota. He was a graduate of Albert Lea High School and attended the Uuniversity of Minnesota. He married Marion Fankhanel on October 4, 1936 in Mason City, Iowa. He was a devoted husband/ caregiver until her death on March 24, 2002.

From high school age to the age of 35, Mr. Salthun was a movie theater usher, a theater best boy, theater manager, and an area manager in Fort Dodge, Iowa and later Columbus, Nebraska for the Tri-State Theater Company. Henry moved his family to Davenport in 1945 becoming the Assistant Manager with the W. T. Grant Co. at 2nd and Harrison Streets. In 1949, he purchased The Fun Shop in downtown Davenport. He and his wife, Marion, operated this toy, hobby, magic and novelty store continuously for 42 years, retiring in September 1991, weeks before his 83rd birthday.

Henry utilized a stationary bicycle, a retirement/ birthday present from his wife. Since 1991, the odometer recorded 29,336 miles.

Henry was a 63-year member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, serving as Congregation president 1955-57. He was recognized in 2006 as a 75-year member of the Minnesota Masons, Albert Lea Chapter.

Henry was an avid reader all of his life. He amazed friends and family with vivid recall of anecdotes from his youth and adult life.

Henry is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Judy Salthun, Johnston, Iowa and Rex and Kathy Salthun, Bettendorf, Iowa; grandchildren, Jim (Shannon) Salthun, Hancock, MI, Pamela (Kevin) Schlueter, Des Moines, IA, Signe (Jon) Brackmann, Phoenix, AZ, and Scott Salthun, Red Oak, IA; six great-grandchildren; nephew, Steve Brunken, Portland, OR; and special friends, Fletcher Shanks and Sue Johnson, both of Davenport. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

HENRI DWYER ROEMER
2008 - 2008

Henri Dwyer Roemer, son of Kelly and Mark Roemer, was born still on Monday,
September 22, 2008, at Trinity Health Systems, 7th St. Campus, Moline, IL. He was dearly loved and his arrival was greatly anticipated by many friends and family members, especially by his two brothers, Jack Dwyer Roemer and Spencer Henri Roemer. He is survived by his maternal grandparents, Judy and David Dywer of Moline, Illinois,and paternal grandparents, Janice and Pete Roemer of Davenport, Iowa, his Aunt Kristine (Dwyer) Blessing and Uncle Jim Blessing, cousins, James, Ryan and Allison Blessing all of Elmhurst, Illinois; Aunt Kimberly (Dwyer) Elliott and Joe Elliott, cousins, Michael and Emily all of Milan, Illinois. A private service is being held for the family. Memorials may be made in Henri's name to First Candle at Firstcandle.org or by mail to 1314 Bedford Avenue, Suite 210, Baltimore, MD 21208. Donald E. Sparbel, 71, of Davenport, Iowa, died Thursday, September 25, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, September 29th, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Visitation will be 1-5:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Children’s Miracle Network of Iowa City.

Mr. Sparbel was born in 1936 to William and Helen Sparbel. He graduated from Davenport High School with the class of ’55 and joined the U.S. Air Force. On March 1, 1969 he married Nancy Stahmer in Davenport. He worked at several local car dealerships in various roles, including sales, service and finance. He was all about cars, cars, cars! He was particularly devoted to his family, the loves of his life being his son, David and grandson, Tysen. He would give his shirt off his back to whomever needed it. His memberships included the Iowa City Cruiseamatics, and the Davenport Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; son, David (Tammy) Sparbel of Davenport; grandson, Tysen Sparbel; brother, Terry (Karen) Sparbel of Chandler, Arizona; sisters, Sandy (Ken) Madsen and Penny (Bill) Wisely, all of Davenport; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a stepfather, Jesse Caster.

ALLYN E. SPIES
1931 - 2008

Allyn E. Spies, 77, of Davenport, Iowa, died Friday, September 26, 2008 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Genesis VNA, Bettendorf. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 30th, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 PM Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport, and for one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Spies was born in 1931 to George and Edna Spies. He graduated from Davenport High School and served with the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. On November 14, 1959 he married Betty L. Voehl in Davenport. He worked for the Davenport Post Office, retiring in 1993 after 36 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a great sports enthusiast, especially for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of all, Allyn was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his loving wife, Betty; daughters, Sheri (Brad) Stutesman of Naperville, IL, and Julie Spies of Davenport; son, Jeff (Lorina) Spies of Cedar Rapids, IA; grandchildren, Tom and Dan Stutesman and Greg and Carly Spies; brother, George (Darlene) Spies of Maysville, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

GREGG H. BRUSH
1949 - 2008

Gregg H. Brush, 59, of Davenport, Iowa, died unexpectedly Sunday, September 28, 2008 at his home. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 PM Wednesday, October 1st, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Additional visitation will be 1:00 PM Thursday at Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home, 40 West Main Street, El Paso, Illinois, with services following at 2 PM. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery , El Paso. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Intrepid Fallen Soldiers Fund.

Gregg Hughes Brush was born on September 8, 1949 in Normal, Il to Georgianna and Porter Brush of Gridley, Illinois. He graduated from Washington High School in 1967 and enrolled at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, where he met and married his wife Cheryl Gauwitz. In the fall of 1967 he voluntarily joined the Army to serve his country. Gregg received his basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri and became an Airborne Ranger, serving as a member of the LRRP (Long Range Reconnaisance Patrol) in Vietnam in 1968 & 1969. He finished his army service in Germany, receiving an honorable discharge in 1970. He was an extremely patriotic and humble person. Not many people are aware that Gregg twice received Purple Hearts for being wounded in combat and was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and received the prestigious Soldiers Medal for heroism.

Gregg and Cheryl moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1980 where he worked as an Account Manager for G. S. Robins and Company. Gregg was a tireless worker who was always able to balance his career with family life. He loved fishing, sports, sitting outside and chatting with the neighbors, and most of all, never missed a ball game, birthday, or special occasion for his two children or his three grandchildren. He would drop everything for his family and will forever be remembered as a selfless, caring, and loving person. He will be missed, but never forgotten, being always remembered in their prayers and dreams, as husband, dad, brother and papa.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Lisa (Darren) Burns of Normal, IL; son, Stephen Brush and fiancee’ Marcene Voyles of Davenport; grandchildren, Kellen, Addison and Bailey; his father, Porter Brush, East Peoria, IL; brothers, Dick (Kathy) Brush of Millstadt, IL, Randy (Karen) Brush of Dunlap, IL, and Kim (Patti) Brush of Bloomington, IL; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother.

MARION F. MURRAY
1918 - 2008

Marion F. “Bud” Murray, 90, of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 4th at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 2618 Boies Avenue, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 4-8:00 PM Friday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport, where a vigil service will be held at 8 PM. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church or the Davenport Elks Lodge.

Bud was born in 1918 in Varina, Iowa to Frank and Kathryn Murray. He met Beulah Lange in 1938 in Newell, Iowa. On May 10, 1940, they were married in Des Moines, Iowa. Bud was attending Barber School in Des Moines at this time. They then moved to Davenport in 1942. Bud founded G. M. Trucking, Murray’s Transfer and Storage, Inc., Murray’s Warehouse, Inc., and Quint City Truck and Trailer Rental, all of Davenport. On December 31, 1986, Bud fulfilled a lifelong dream, to become the owner of a farm in Low Moor, Iowa.

His memberships included St. Alphonsus Church, of which he was a member for over 60 years; Davenport Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Q.C. Traffic Club, and the Farm Bureau. He would do anything for his family and will forever be remembered as a caring and loving person. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah; daughters, Judy (Ken) Klindt of Maysville, IA, Gloria (Ron) Williams of Davenport, Patty (Bob) Powell and Marcia Murray, all of Bettendorf; son, Robert (Kathie Kuriger) Murray of Coal Valley, IL; grandchildren, Scott (Teresa) Williams, Darcy (Brad) Owens, Joel (Kerry) Carmichael, Melissa (James) Sears, Sean Sehmann, Christopher (Candace) Carmichael, Heather (Bryan) Behning, Jennifer (Mark) Franks, Rachael (Chad) Stillwagon, Tammy (Brice) Quijas, Gretchen (James) Thiel, Lisa Elkan, and Marcia Klindt; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson Robert Scott Murray and sister, Thelma Strodtman.

STEVEN L. LANGSTAFF
1941 - 2009

Steven L. Langstaff, 67, of Davenport, Iowa, died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 4, 2009 in Davenport. A memorial gathering of Steven’s family and friends will be held from 3 PM until 7 PM Friday, February 6th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Graveside services will be at Columbus City cemetery at 10:00 AM Saturday, with a luncheon to follow from 10:30 until 2:00 P.M. at the Columbus Junction Methodist Church. A memorial fund in Steven’s name will be established.

Steven was born in 1941 in Muscatine, Iowa to Warren and Jean Langstaff. He married Charlotte Wolford on February 23, 1974 in Columbus Junction, Iowa. A 1959 graduate of Columbus Junction High School, he worked for Rath Packing in Columbus Junction for 20 years until it’s closing. In 1995, he and his family moved to Davenport. He then worked in Building Supply Sales until his retirement in 2008. Following his retirement, and at the time of his death, he worked at Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; son, Troy Wilken of Davenport; daughter, Cindy (David) Bixby of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; granddaughter, Marissa Bixby; and brothers, Dean (Molly) Langstaff of Iowa City, and Gene (Sue) Langstaff of Wapello, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father (1996), his mother (2005) and an infant grandson, Dalton Bixby (May 1999). He loved his grandchildren more than life itself.

ROGER A. SCHOLEY
1940 - 2009

Roger A. Scholey, 68, of Davenport, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 12th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park, where Davenport American Legion Post #26 will conduct military honors. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Roger was born in 1940 in Waterloo, Iowa to Weldon and Faye Scholey. A 1958 graduate of Davenport High School, he served with the U.S. Navy for ten years, stationed in Alameda, CA, Jacksonville, FL and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. He married Sharon K. Ott on April 7, 1962 in Davenport. Following his honorable discharge, he worked as an electrician with Alcoa for the next 33 years, retiring in 2001. Among his varied interests, he enjoyed motorcycles, WW II history, airplanes, the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and meeting friends at Hardees for coffee.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; daughters, Debbie (John) Watkins of Davenport, Mandy (Terry) Till of Bettendorf, and Julie (Bart) Johnson of Blue Grass; grandchildren, Molly and Drew Watkins, Mallory Till and Trevor Johnson; mother, Faye Scholey of Davenport; brother, Keith (Jeannie) Scholey of Galesburg; sister-in-law, Darla Scholey of Davenport, and family friend, Jean Parrick of Davenport. His father, a sister, Mary Galbraith and brothers, Jerry and David Scholey, preceded him in death.

He adored his grandchildren and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

1950 - 2009

Deb Reichman, 58, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, February 12th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice.

Deb was born in 1950 in Gallipolis, Ohio to William and Lova Lanier. She married Joe V. Reichman on August 23, 1980 in Westerville, Ohio. Deb was a budget specialist for St. Anthony’s Medical Center and Ohio State University Hospital, both of Columbus, Ohio. She had a great love for animals, especially her collie “Simon” and her cat, “Emily.” She enjoyed visiting zoos whenever possible and being with all the various animals. She was a very hard worker who gave great attention to detail, and loved children. A very devoted wife to her husband, she was the “beauty of his life.”

Survivors include her husband, Joe; mother, Lova Lanier and brother, Scott Lanier, both of Knoxville, TN. She was preceded in death by her father.

ARLIE F. MUDD
1916 - 2009

Services: Sunday, March 29, 2009, 11:00 AM at the Unitarian Church, 370 Eastern Avenue, Davenport
Arlie F. Mudd, 92, of Davenport, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Genesis VNA, Bettendorf. A special memorial service will be held during the regular 11 AM Sunday services on March 29, 2009 at The Unitarian Church, 3707 Eastern Avenue, Davenport, where she was a devoted lifetime member. Rev. Roger Butts will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Unitarian Church, Davenport. As she wished, her body will be donated to the Palmer College of Chiropractic. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Arlie was born in 1916 in Davenport, Iowa to Dennis and Hulda Murphy. She married Myron V. Mudd on July 11, 1946 in Davenport. He died December 12, 1969. She worked as an accountant for a computer graphics firm, Megatek Corp., retiring in 1983.

A cousin, Shirley Trueblood, survives in California. She is also fondly remembered by her church family and her friends. Arlie will be remembered for her love of worldwide travel, playing bridge and her support of Planned Parenthood.

Arlie was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Mudd, and three sisters, Louise Murphy, E. Rosalie Murphy, and Edith E. Griffin.
