Amber Huber, age 20, a junior at the University of Iowa and a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, died Thursday, September 4, 2003 at University of Iowa Healthcare from lymphoma.

Visitation will be held Saturday afternoon at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. 1-319-338-8171.

Visitation will then be held on Sunday at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home in Byron, Illinois. 1-815-234-2631. Funeral Services will be held on Monday in Illinois.

Mildred A. Fry
Born: June 20, 1920
Died: November 25, 2003

Services: Funeral services will be 10: 00 am on Friday, November 28 at Lensing Funeral & Cremations Service-605 Kirkwood Ave. Burial will be in Dysart cemetery .

Visitation: The family will greet friends from 9: 00-10: 00 a.m. before the funeral service at Lensings.

Mildred A. Fry, 83 of 2423 Walden Road, Iowa City died, Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Mildred was born June 20, 1920 in Dysart, Iowa the daughter of Charles Abner and Amanda Stella (Knupp) Fry. She received her BA from Coe College and her MA from the University of Colorado. She was a music teacher for forty years and retired in 1980. Mildred lived in Marshalltown for thirty years before moving to Iowa City in 1998. She was a member of Hope Methodist Church.

During summer vacations Mildred traveled extensively throughout the world. She brought back dolls, music boxes and interesting musical instruments from many cultures. These were shared with her students, friends and family.

She is survived by her sister, Mardean Johnson and her husband Marion of North Liberty, Iowa and one nephew, David K. Johnson of Tracy, California. She is also survived by great nieces, Jill Johnson-West of North Liberty, Iowa and Maria Ganesh of Castro Valley, California, and great nephews Richard Johnson of Lake Zurich, Illinois and Christopher Johnson of Fort Worth, Texas and three great great nephews.

Her parents and one infant brother, Marvin Leroy Fry all preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in her name to the Heifer Project International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, AR/USA 72203 https: //www.heifer.org/ or to any Methodist Church.

Dorothy E. O'Brien
Born: May 27, 1920

Dorothy E. O’Brien, 83 died Sunday, September 21, 2003 at her home surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born May 27, 1920 the daughter of William and Lillian Narbert Kieser in St. Louis, Missouri. In October, 1937, she married Robert James Mills II. They established Mills Pharmacy in 1947 in Waukegan, Illinois and a second store in 1951 in Mundelein, Illinois. He died September, 1949. She later married William E. O’Brien on March 14, 1953. He died in February, 1995.

In 1958 they moved to Iowa City to open the first McDonalds in Iowa City on Riverside Drive. This was a major achievement for a woman in that she was the first woman franchisee of McDonalds. She opened the second store in Coralville on First Avenue in 1977 and a third at Sycamore Mall in 1990.

Dorothy and Bill were instrumental in developing and supporting the Midlands Tennis Tournament and the Iowa City Boys’ Baseball. In 1985 she helped establish the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City where she served on its Board of Directors. They were gracious contributors to Iowa City’s charities and were awarded the “Service to Mankind” award from Sertoma.

Dorothy was a very determined, positive and unstoppable woman with a very positive outlook on life. She had a strong work ethic and took tremendous pride in her business and her customers. Dorothy loved her family, her grandchildren, her trips to Florida, orchids, and her garden. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Jeannine D. Mlynski and her husband David of Naperville, Illinois; her sons, Robert J. Mills III of Chicago, Illinois, Kevin W. O’Brien and his wife Jil of Iowa City, Iowa; stepson, Thomas O’Brien and his wife Laura of Danbury, Connecticut; fourteen grandchildren, Robert J. Mills IV and his wife, Cathy, Bradley Danaher, Kristen Heraty and her husband Shawn, O’Brien Mills and his wife Anna, Michael Mills, Elizabeth Gracey and her husband Peter, Ryan O’Brien and his wife Angie, Heather Ruzicka and her husband Bill, Jr., Alexander O’Brien, Lauren O’Brien and Lillian O’ Brien, Erin, Shawn, and Colin O’Brien; seven great grandchildren, Braiddey, Karter, and Jensen Ruzicka, Hannah, Lauren, and Jack Heraty, and Gabriel O’Brien.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert J. Mills II and William E. O’Brien; her son, Walt O’Brien; and her grandson Graham Mills.

Mary Pusateri Rocca
Born: July 25, 1904
Died: November 27, 2003

Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 1, 2003 at 10AM at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery . A luncheon at the parish hall will follow committal services.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3-7: 30PM, Sunday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where the Catholic Daughters of America will recite a rosary at 4PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 6: 30PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Catholic Community Foundation or the Congregation of Humility of Mary, Davenport.

Mary Pusateri Rocca, 99, of Iowa City died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 27, 2003 at Mercy Hospital following a short illness.

Mary was born on July 25,1904 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Geraci Pusateri. Her parents were of Italian descent and moved from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City. They ran a fruit market in downtown Iowa City. At that time many children, including Mary and her brother Gus, were raised in the downtown area. Mary was the last surviving child of those children raised downtown. Mary was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. She married Peter A. Rocca at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City on June 24, 1926. They celebrated 58 years of marriage. Peter died in 1984.

Mary stayed at home to raise her children and later was a pastry baker at St. Mary’s and Horace Mann School. She enjoyed baking, especially pizza and sweet rolls, gardening, sewing, puzzles and playing the piano.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who was deeply religious and prayerful. Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Altar and Rosary, a 75 year member of Catholic Daughters of America and the NAIM Club.

Mary is survived by her children, 24 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren, Edward Rocca and his wife, Linda of Muscatine and their daughters Mary and Tina; Phil Rocca and his wife Shirley of Iowa City and their sons Andy, Gerry and Phil; Sister Mary Rocca CHM OF Iowa City; Mike Rocca and his wife Beryl of Rochester, Iowa and their daughters Michelle and Stephanie; Jim Rocca and his wife Mary Jo of Ellisville, Missouri and their sons Jon, Steve and Doug; Loretta Clark and her husband Jim of Iowa City and their children Margret, Angela, Bryan, Jeff and Joe.

Two daughter-in-laws, Trudy Rocca (Joe) of Rochester. Minnesota and their children David, Craig, Lisa, Darcy, Kevin and Denice; Ellen Rocca (John) of Lone Tree, Iowa and their children Dawn, Matt and Liz

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Josephine, two sons Joe and John , a great granddaughter, Mary Ellen and her brother Gus Pusateri

Nellie H. White
Born: September 10, 1905
Died: December 04, 2003

Services: Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, December 8, 2003 at 10AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. James Vrba officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens.

Visitation: Friends may call Sunday from 3-5PM, where the Women of the Moose will have a service at 4: 30PM.

Nellie H. White, 98, of 908 South Clark Street died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at her home of cancer.

Nellie was born September 10, 1905 in Luverne, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Ethel Barnes Beers, She married Matthew White on November 6, 1946. He died in January, 1970.

Nellie had owned a beauty salon in Rock Rapids, Iowa prior to moving to Iowa City in 1947. In Iowa City she had worked at area beauty salons.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Legion of Mary, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose.

She was a very caring person who enjoyed her church, her friends and her involvement with the Iowa City Moose Lodge.

Nellie is survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Mercy Hospital Foundation or Iowa City Hospice.

Stephen P. Arnold
Born: October 18, 1949
Died: December 06, 2003

Services: A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 4: 00 pm on Wednesday at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1300 Melrose Ave. Iowa City, Iowa. A light reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the City Circle Acting Co. Coralville, Iowa. Memorials may be sent to 1310 Bristol Dr., Iowa City, Iowa 52245

Stephen P. Arnold, 54 of 1205 Brookwood Dr. died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a long battle with heart disease.

On October 18, 1949 Stephen was born to Shirley Berry Arnold. He was raised by Deannie and Jim Rooney in Fort Madison, Iowa. He married Vicki Diane Lamb on August 22, 1970 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Stephen and Vicki have lived in Iowa City for 33 years. He worked for many years at the University of Iowa as a Records Clerk.

His true passion in life was theatre. He was a long time member of Community Theatre and City Circle Acting Co. He acted as Tevya in “ Fiddler on the Roof”, John Adams in “I776” just to name a few. He also directed and acted in numerous other productions. In addition he loved reading, gardening and history.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki of Iowa City, Iowa; by his children, Matthew Arnold and his wife Joy and their children, Austin and Skylar all of Sacramento, California, Christopher Arnold and his wife Jessica Jensen-Arnold of Iowa City, Iowa, Elisabeth Arnold of Coralville, Iowa; He is also survived by his father, Jim Rooney of Farmington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his brother Randy Arnold and by Deannie Rooney.

Eleanora Charlene Betsy Ross
Born: January 03, 1932
Died: December 15, 2003

Services: Funeral Services to celebrate Eleanora’s life will be Sunday, December 21, 2003 at 1: 00PM at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Iowa City with the Rev. David Aanonson officiating. A reception at the church will follow services. Family Graveside Services will be Monday at Elm Grove cemetery , Washington, Iowa.

Visitation: Friends may call Saturday from 4-7PM at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville.

Eleanora “Betsy” Ross, 71, of 508 – 5th Street, Coralville, died peacefully Monday, December 15, 2003 at her home following a long illness.

Eleanora Charlene Miller was born January 3, 1932 in Washington, Iowa; the daughter of Roy and Erna Spera Miller. She was married to Robert Anderson from 1951-71 and married Bill Ross in 1973, who then gave her the nickname “Betsy.” Eleanora received her BGS Degree in 1979 from the University of Iowa in religion, journalism and psychology and had done graduate studies in counseling. She received her certification in grief counseling and death education in 1990.

Betsy was the Founder (1976) and Executive Director of Ray of Hope, Inc., the first support group in the country for the survivors of suicide. She was a nationally known speaker, consultant and writer in the area of suicide survivorship. Betsy was the publisher and editor for Lynn Publications, which developed seminars on loss, grief, bereavement, broken relationships, and suicide prevention. She published many books, pamphlets, and articles on suicide, including: Life After Suicide: A Ray of Hope for Those Left Behind, in 1979 with revisions in 1981 and 1997; and a booklet “After Suicide: A Unique Grief Process” in 1979, selling thousands of copies. Betsy had appeared on numerous radio and television programs including the Today Show and Donahue. She presented over 100 seminars and workshops and had received numerous honors and awards including; the first recipient of the David Braverman Award (1980), the Survivor Recognition Award (1999) and was in the Who’s Who of American Women(1986-2000).

Her memberships include; the Association for Death Education and Counseling, American Association of Suicidology, Omicron Delta Kappa, National Association for Female Executives, and Association for Christian Counselors and Therapists.

Betsy was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and had been involved in the Humane Society’s Foster Program for pets. She loved her cats and enjoyed dancing, traveling and horseback riding.

She will be deeply missed by her two sons; Daryl Anderson of Ainsworth and David Anderson of Columbus Junction; one daughter Rebecca Anderson of Ocala, Florida; one granddaughter Kimberly of Casselberry, Florida; two brothers Norman Miller of Davenport and Mervin Miller and his wife Mary of Rockford, Illinois.

Eleanora was preceded in death by her parents and husbands Robert and Bill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ray of Hope,Inc., the Johnson County Humane Society or Christ The King Lutheran Church.

David E. Metz
Born: October 17, 1950
Died: December 18, 2003

Services: A celebration of David’s life will be held on Monday, December 22, 2003, at 10: 30 a.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with the Rev. Bev Hovenkamp officiating. Military rites will be provided by local military organizations. Private burial will be at Oakland cemetery .

Visitation: Friends may call on Sunday, December 21, 2003, from 4: 00 to 8: 00 p.m. at the funeral home.

David E. Metz, 53, of 2530 Bluffwood Circle died at his home on Thursday, December 18, 2003, following a courageous battle with cancer. His wife, daughter and son-in-law were at his side.

David was born on October 17, 1950, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Evelyn Musser Metz. He married Rose Gilroy on April 21, 1972, at St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City. David was raised in Ainsworth and moved to Iowa City in 1971. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War for two years and was a member of the Naval Reserve.

David was employed by Proctor and Gamble for 28 years, retiring in 1997. He especially enjoyed teaching the skills of the electrical trade to many new employees. He was a gifted woodworker who enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with their home projects. His grandchildren, Tyler and Kylie, called him “Gramps.” Tyler was Gramps’ right hand on home projects, and Kylie was special because she is so much like Amy, David’s daughter. He also volunteered his time for nonprofit organizations. His passions included building furniture, studying Civil War history, listening to music, traveling and mushroom hunting.

David is survived by his wife, Rose, of Iowa City; his daughter, Amy Greazel, and her husband, David, of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Tyler and Kylie; his father, Elmer Metz, of Lone Tree, Iowa. He also is survived by four sisters, Linda Johnson and her husband, Bill, of Iowa City; Barb Oldfield and her husband, Duane, of Iowa City; Pat Weimer and her husband, Al, of Waynesville, Ohio; and Becky Grantier and her husband, Dave, of Winnett, Montana. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, who inspired his love for woodworking.

Memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, Domestic Violence Intervention Program, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, Humanities Iowa or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Lynn A. Trimmer Detweiler

Died: August 03, 2003

Services: Funeral Mass will be at 10: 00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 405 N. Riverside Drive, Iowa City

Visitation: Friends may call from 1: 00 until 8: 00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a parish rosary recited at 6: 00 p.m.

Lynn A. “Trimmer” Detweiler, 50, of 51 Gleason Drive, Iowa City, died Sunday morning, August 3, 2003, near Salem, South Dakota, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident while on his way to a Harley Rally at Sturgis.

Funeral Mass will be at 10: 00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 405 N. Riverside Drive, Iowa City, with the Reverend Walter Helms, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery , Iowa City. Friends may call from 1: 00 until 8: 00 p.m. Wednesday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a parish rosary recited at 6: 00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Lynn Detweiler was born November 25, 1952, in Fort Clayton, Panama, the son of Dwain and Ruth (Marine) Detweiler. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson County. He was united in marriage to Theresa Kopatich. Lynn had owned and operated his own construction company for over twenty years. In the last two years he had retired and he and his wife opened Petland in Iowa City. Lynn leaves behind many loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Kopatich; his son, Troy Detweiler of Iowa City; two step-sons, Ryan Detweiler of Iowa City, and Jeremy Withrow and his wife Malina of Coralville; his step-daughter, Dawn Walters and her husband J.D. of Kalona; five grandsons; his parents, Ruth and Dwain Detweiler of Brownsville, Texas; two sisters, Linda Bang of Coralville, and Cheryl Detweiler of Bluegrass, Iowa; one brother, Carroll Detweiler; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. “We will miss you Trimmer”.

Loretta Campbell
Born: July 26, 1915
Died: May 30, 2003

Services: Graveside services will be held 10: 00 am Monday, June 2, 2003 at St. Joseph cemetery .

Visitation: Visitation will be on Monday from 9: 00 am until service time at the Vogel Chapel at St. Joseph cemetery .

Loretta Anna Campbell, 87 of Mountain View, Missouri, formerly of Iowa City died Friday, May 30, 2003.

Graveside services will be held 10: 00 am Monday, June 2, 2003 at St. Joseph cemetery . Visitation will be on Monday from 9: 00 am until service time at the Vogel Chapel at St. Joseph cemetery . In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church 1050 W. Business Hwy 60-63 Willow Springs, Missouri, or to a charity of choice.

Loretta was born July 26, 1915 in Solon, Iowa the daughter of Louis and Christina (Maresh) Shebetka. She was a graduate of Solon High School. On August 10, 1940 she was united in marriage to Lester Campbell. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Three daughters; Joyce Anderson and her husband Doug of Lees Summit, Missouri, Phyllis Brirdos of Aurora, Colorado, Maxine Horgan and her husband Kenneth of Mountain View, Missouri View, and one son; Lyle Campbell of North Liberty, ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren survive her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Richard, Leonard and Leon and by two sisters, Adelaide and Agnes Shebetka.
