Mary Jo Daly

Mary Jo Daly, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, age 69 of Burlington passed away at 2:56 AM Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 1, 1931 in Clinton she was the daughter of Philip Clark and Frances Barbara Siegel Soesbe. On June 5, 1954 she married Francis Paul Daly in Clinton.

Mrs. Daly was a payroll clerk for General Electric in Morrison, IL, a secretary for Mercy Nursing School in Burlington, a homemaker, and a Realtor Associate.

She was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, assisted with the RCIA program and served on St. Patrick’s parish council. She loved playing bridge, traveling, and reading, classic movies and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Francis; children, Barbara Daly of Burlington, Pat and Gayle Daly of Burlington, Marianne and Mark Stratton of Coralville, Bob and Heidi Daly of Gilbert, AZ, Margie and Steve Swanner of Burlington, Andrew and Merideth Daly of St. Louis, MO, Sara Daly of Burlington, and Matt Daly of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Molly and Nick Daly, Katherine Stratton, Inaki Ulrich and Alexander Daly, and Jeff and Scott Swanner; three brothers, Bob, Jack, and Bill Soesbe of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, Michael, and one brother, Jim.

Friends may call after 8:00AM Thursday, March 1, at the Hass Funeral Home with a Christian Wake Service held at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 PM

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Daly will be 10:30 AM Friday, March 2, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Pallbearers will be Pat Daly, Andrew Daly, Marianne Stratton, Bob Daly, Matt Daly, Jack Soesbe, Bill Soesbe, and Bob Soesbe. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Ronald Lewis

Ronald (Pops) Lewis, age 63 of Burlington, passed away at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 28, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York he was the son of George H. and Minnie L. Moore Lewis.

Mr. Lewis graduated from Public School #25 in Brooklyn, NY in 1956.

He started shining shoes and then taught music for one year in Queens.

He stated his own band and later played his trombone or baritone in bands with Count Basie and Benny Goodman.

He had training and experience in shoe repair, orthopedic shoe treatment and in custom tailoring.

He attended Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. He loved music and enjoyed big band and swing music, and was an avid fisherman.

He had a good singing voice, loved to cook, and he had a great sense of humor.

He began to box for Golden Gloves at the age of 11 and continued to the age of 17.

Survivors include, One son, Desmond Lewis of New York; one daughter, Monique Lewis of Omaha, NE; one step daughter, Shari Donald of Ft. Madison; five grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Lewis of Houston, TX, George Harold Lewis of Brooklyn, NY; five sisters, Anita Anderson of Rochester, NY, Rose Marie Whaley of Queens, NY, Gwendolyn Dickson of Queens, NY, Ayishah Lewis-Shabazz of Atlanta, GA, Jeanie Jennings of Cheverly, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Dean Lewis.

Visitation will be after noon Sunday, April 22, at the Hass Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM Sunday evening.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Lewis will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 23, at the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. Elder Fred Starling will officiate. Interment will be Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in memory of Mr. Ronald (Pops) Lewis.

Beverly Higdon

Beverly Sue Higdon, age 55 of Burlington passed away at 1:01 PM, Saturday, May 19, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 20, 1946 in Ft. Madison she was the daughter of Dale Hart and Edith Irene Steward Orton. She married Eugene “Sonny” Higdon Jr. on September 14, 1980 in Burlington.

Mrs. Higdon was a 1963 graduate of Burlington High School.

She was an Operations Manager for American Freightways she had over 38 years in the trucking industry.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

She was a member of VFW Post 10102 Auxiliary.

She had a wonderful sense of humor, was a loving wife, mother and she loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include, her husband, Sonny; one daughter, Dale Schlueter of Burlington; one stepson, Eric Higdon of Morning Sun, one stepdaughter, Tina McCoy of Mediapolis; four grandchildren; and one niece

She was preced in death by her parents, and one sister.

The body of Mrs. Higdon has been cremated.

The family receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 23 at the First Christian Church.

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Higdon will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 23, at the First Christian Church. Reverend David A. Nash will officiate. Inurnment will be in Denmark Cemetery , Denmark, IA.

A memorial has been established in memory of Mrs. Beverly Sue Higdon.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Marie Harris

Marie Christine Harris, age 91, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Monday, January 8, 1909, at the Burlington Care Center.

Born March 4, 1909, in Meade, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Victor C. and Josephine Gibson Lind. She married Harold R. Harris on January 29, 1931, in Chillicothe, Missouri. He died May 17, 1982.

Mrs. Harris was a homemaker. She was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Women of the Moose Chapter #587 and Ruth Rebecca Lodge. She was a loving grandmother, a caretaker of the ederly and a good cook. She enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Marie (Norman) Hartman and Brenda Jo (Marvin) Liles, both of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Robert Dean, four brothers and two sisters.

Her body has been cremated. There will be no visitation.

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Harris will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 11, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Duane Miller Officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials have been established for her church and the Aicardi Syndrome Foundation, 1413 Lynnwood Drive, Burlington.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Walter Tiemeier

Walter B. (Wally) Tiemeier, age 76 of Burlington passed away at 5:00 AM Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 5, 1924 in Burlington he was the son of Walter E. and Louise Miller Tiemeier. On August 17, 1946 he married Idabel Goepel in Fairfield.

Mr. Tiemeier was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp serving in WW 2 for three years. He worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and then was transferred to Pantex in Amarillo, TX retiring in 1986.

He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #568 and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Idabel of Burlington; one son, Daniel E. Tiemeier of Centerville; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, James C. Tiemeier and Richard H. Tiemeier both of Burlington; one sister, Vera C. Tiemeier of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David Alan Tiemeier and one daughter, Jean Louise Bice.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Thursday, February 1, at the Hass Funeral Home where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 4:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service unitl 8:00 PM Thursday evening.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Tiemeier will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 2, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Pallbearers will be Black Knights of the Knights of Columbus #568, Gene Fedler, Mervin Klees, Robert Renner, Mark Luttenegger, William Cox, and Mark Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mark Tiemeier, Joel Tiemeier, Brian Bice, Jenny Tiemeier, Leroy Leveling, and Mike Bice. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established to St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Fred Soloway

Fred F. Soloway, age 79 of West Burlington passed away at 5:22 PM Sunday, March 4, 2001 at the Genesis Medical Center-West Campus in Davenport.

Born August 28, 1921 in Erie, PA he was the son Samuel and Tilly Soloway. He married Joanne Timms on October 28, 1951 in Gowanda, NY.

Mr. Soloway was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California graduating second in his class. He was an Industrial Engineer with U.S. Steel in Detroit, MI and then with the Leopold Co. in Burlington.

He was of the Jewish Faith. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne; one son, Brian Soloway of Dallas, TX; three daughters, Amy Mohrfeld of Des Moines, Mara Soloway of College Station, TX and Carrie Hyke of Chino Hills, CA; five grandchildren; two sisters, Nina Lincoln of Miami, FL and Ruth Kline of Erie, PA and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.

The body of Mr. Soloway has been cremated and there will be no services.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Vera Griffin

Vera M. Griffin, age 77 of Burlington passed away at 8:25 PM Sunday, March 18, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 2, 1923 in Sioux City, she was the daughter of John Fred and Hanna Elizabeth Driver Gregg. On August 13, 1945 she married Elwood P. Griffin.

Mrs. Griffin was a 1942 graduate of East High School in Sioux City. She did upholstery work at the Sioux City Co. in Sioux City and at the Chittenden-Eastman House Co. in Burlington.

She was of the Presbyterian Faith. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved animals.

Survivors include her husband Elwood; one grandson; two sisters, Ruth Simpkins of Sun City, CA and Leota Huisman of Sioux City, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Doug, two brothers, and one sister.

Visitation will be after noon Tuesday, March 20, at the Hass Funeral Home until 8:00 PM. There will be no family visitation.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Griffin will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 21, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Reverend Darryl Erickson of the Grandview Community Bible Church will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . Pallbearers will be Crotty A. Griffin, Jim Griffin, Rod Whitaker, Craig Whitaker, Mike Whitaker, and Corey Whitaker.
