Anna Cockrell

Anna B. Cockrell, age 73 of Wever passed away at 2:05 AM Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at her home.

Born February 20, 1928 in Lone Tree she was the daughter of Earl B. (Jack) and Thelma Grasham Thompson. She married Francis C. (Ted) Cockrell Sr. on January 30, 1948 in Washington, DC.

Mrs. Cockrell graduated from Grandview High School in 1946 as the Valdictorian.

She was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, liked to watch movies, loved plants and flowers. She also liked to listen to music especially big band music and country music.

Survivors include her husband, Francis C. (Ted) Cockrell Sr. of Wever; one son, Francis C. (Ted) Cockrell Jr. of Burlington; two daughters, Marion M. Bachtell of West Burlington and Teri Cockrell of West Des Moines; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren; two sisters, Marge Conklin of Columbus Junction and Jean Holden of Newport News, VA; two nephews and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, and one niece.

The body of Mrs. Cockrell has been cremated.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Monday, April 23, at the Hass Funeral Home.

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Cockrell will be 1:30 PM Monday, April 23, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Reverend Trevor Davis of the Grace United Methodist Church will officiate.

A memorial has been esatblished to the Lee County Health Department Hospice.

Ruth Smith

Ruth Mary Smith, age 71 of Burlington passed away at 6:30 AM Monday, April 30, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 14, 1930 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph T. and Anna M. Kroll Frenzer. On October 19, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Rectory she married Kenneth E. Smith Sr. He died April 20, 2001.

Mrs. Smith graduated in 1949 from Burlington High School.

She worked for General Electric for over 25 years, retiring in 1993. She was of the Catholic Faith.

Mrs. Smith’s greatest joy of life was her loving family. She also enjoyed her cabin on the Mississippi River, and playing cards with her sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Shereen) Smith Jr. and Michael Alan Smith, both of Burlington; two grandchildren, Shawn Smith and Heidi Smith, both of Burlington; four sisters, Antoinette Kerr and Charlotte Peterson both of Burlington, her twin sister, Rose Mary Moss of West Burlington, and Clara Waltrip of Cupertino, CA and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, and one infant son.

Mrs. Smith has deeded her body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Anatomy in Iowa City.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Wednesday, May 2, at the Hass Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM.

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Smith will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 2, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Reverend Father Gerald E. Stouvenel will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Dorothy Stanbary

Dorothy E. Stanbary, age 77 of West Burlington passed away at 9:46 AM Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at the Great River Medical Cenetr in West Burlington.

Born September 11, 1923 in Burlington she was the daughter of Harvey W. and Dorothy E. Mosena Dowell. She married Kenneth H. Stanbary October 6, 1946 in Smithshire, IL.

< Mrs. Stanbary was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School.

She was a teachers's aide at Corse Elemetary School for 13 years.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She was a charter member of the Roman' Hawks Camping Club and a member of the Squarenaders Square Dance Club both of Burlington. She loved plants, flowers, camping and traveling.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Stanbary; four sons, Douglas Stanbary of Plano, TX, Virgil Stanbary, David Stanbary, and Randy Stanbary all of Burlington; one daughter, Barbara Nichols of Loveland, CO; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother; Roy Dowell of Lakeside, CA; one sister Frances Leach of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother.

The body of Mrs. Stanbary has been cremated.

There will be no visitation.

The Private Family Memorial Service for Mrs. Stanbary will be 11:30 AM Monday, May 21, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Reverend Trevor Davis of the Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

Joan Bushnell

Joan Crawford Wingo Bushnell, 70 of Calhoun, GA died Thursday morning June 7, 2001 at the Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.

Born February 14, 1931 in Galesburg, IL she was the daughter of Noble Eugene and Eva Adcock Crawford. She married Melvin Wingo, they later divorced she then married Ken Bushnell in Galesburg, IL. He died in 1974.

Mrs. Bushnell worked in the Deli at K-Mart in Galesburg and then in Calhoun, she owned and operated Joan’s Variety Store in Calhoun. She was of the First Methodist faith. She was a member of Amvets, Eagles and the Senior Citizens.

She loved senior citizens and to play pool and bingo.

Survivors include her special friend and loyal companion Loyd Jackson; one son Rick Wingo of Ranger, GA; one daughter, Ardith (Harvey) Scott of Calhoun, GA; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; one niece, Debra J. Price of Burlington; one nephew Brent Crawford of Des Moines; three great nieces; two great nephews and two great great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Eugene Leroy Crawford.

A private funeral was Saturday, June 9 in Calhoun, GA. After the funeral the body was cremated.

A memorial graveside committal service for Mrs. Bushnell will be 10:00 AM Saturday, June 16, at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg, IL.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the local arrangements.

Elaine Roberts

Elaine Roberts, age 83 of West Burlington, passed away at 9:53PM Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 15, 1917, in Cambria, she was the daughter of Willis N. and Nellie V. Shanks Morrett. She married Lester M. Roberts on December 1, 1935, in Chariton. He died May 28, 1992.

Mrs. Roberts worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for more than 20 years, retiring Oct. 19, 1979.

She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was an avid Gardner and enjoyed flowers, her dog, Angel and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two sons, Gary D. Roberts of West Burlington and Donald G. Roberts of Burlington; five grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will begin after 8:00 AM Friday, April 26, until 8:00 PM at the Hass Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Roberts will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 27 at the First Christian Church, with the Reverend David A. Nash officiating. Pallbearers will be Dick Hillgartner, Tom Swanson, Wendell Linder, Sid Stratton, and John Wolf. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elaine's Grandchildren. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association.

Phil Rhoads

Phil Rhoads (Adolphson), beloved husband of Cathy Adolphson (Rhoads), cherished son of Louise Rhoads, and loving father of Rosey "Rosalita Bohita" Adolphson-Rhoads, died on February 16, 2001, in Chicago.

He was born in Brookfield, Missouri on October 14, 1951.

Phil was a musician, cook, writer, animal lover, loyal friend and fighter for human rights. He will be missed.

A tribute to Phil's life will be held on Saturday, February 24, between noon and 6:00 PM at 11728 O'Connell Beach Road, Burlington, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any Anticruelty Society or, in Burlington, the Des Moines County Humane Society.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the local arrangements.

LeRoy Evans

LeRoy H. Evans, age 81, of Burlington, passed away at 9:50 PM Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 30, 1919 in Burlington, he was the son of Homer and Lydia Schroeder Evans. On August 14, 1948 he married Helen Elaine Hass is Bloomfield, IA.

Mr. Evans was a Postal Mail Clerck for the Burlington Post Office, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9162 and the NARF. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan, Chicago Cubs fan, hunter, fisherman, loved his flowers, working jigsaw puzzles, the outdoors, playing cards and helping people.

Survivors include his wife Helen; one son; Ronald Bloom of Coal Valley, IL; and one grandson; one brother, Earl Evans of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, and two sisters.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Saturday, March 24, at the Hass Funeral Home.

The Memorial Service for Mr. Evans will be 11:00 AM Saturday in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Reverend Milo Van Veldhuizen will officiate. Inurnment will be in Rock Island National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois at a later date.

In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the First United Church of Christ.

Nancy Stephens

Nancy A. Stephens age, 68 of Burlington passed away at 8:05 AM Sunday, May 13, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 2, 1933 in Louisa County, she was the daughter of James Oral and Mildred Lewis Courtney. She married Lawrence Lindy Buster on Nov. 5, 1949, in Grandview. They divorced in 1974. She married Donald L. Stephens on March 5, 1976 at Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington.

Mrs. Stephens was raised and educated in Grandview. She worked for Sylvania and Winegard and also for TRW for 16 years.

She was of the Protestant faith. She loved flowers and cats and was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan.

Survivors include her husband; Donald; three sons, Michael L. Buster and Kip R. Buster, both of Burlington, and Douglas N. Buster of Wauconda, IL; one stepson, Brock Stephens of Jefferson City, MO; one stepdaughter, Karon "B.J." Stephens of Burlington; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents, three brothers, and an infant sister.

Her body has been cremated. There will be no visitation.

The Private Family Memorial Graveside Committal Service and Inurnment for Mrs. Stephens will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 16, in the Aspen Grove Cemetery , with the Reverend Dean Graber of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Animal Shelter.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
