Esther Hallberg

Esther B. Hallberg, 84 of Burlington died at 4:53 PM Thursday, June 14, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 18, 1916 in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of Frank J. and Minnie E. Williams Haubenschild and her stepmother, Margaret L. Haubenschild. On June 29, 1939 she married Donald H. Hallberg at the Old Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington.

Mrs. Hallberg worked at Klein’s Clothing Store, Woolworth’s and she was a homemaker. She also breaded the famous tenderloin for Van’s Lunch-Box.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She attended the Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, and the old Elks on Washington St.

She liked to play bingo, make ceramics, crafts, read books, and traveling. For 17 years her and her husband spent five weeks a year in Bradenton Beach, FL and then for 17 years they spent six months a year in Florida five miles from Disney World in the wintertime. They also camped at Spring Lake in the summertime.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Burlington; two daughters, Barbara (Robert) Anderson of Burlington and Susan (George) Moehle of West Burlington; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, and an infant sister.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Sunday June 17, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Hallberg will be 10:00 AM Monday at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend Janice H. Larson officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . Pallbearers will be Robert H. Anderson, David G. Anderson, Donald G. Anderson, Ed Whalen, Steve Whalen and Robert M. Anderson

A memorial has been established.

Louise Edwards

Louise Maxine Edwards , age 76 of Middletown passed away at 4:08 PM, Monday, January 22, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 4, 1924, in Havre, IA, she was the daughter of Lloyd F. and Viola Mae Todd Moothart. On February 4, 1950 she married James L. Edwards, Jr. in Washington, IA.

In 1974 she received her GED from Southeastern Community College. Mrs. Edwards worked her early years at the Calendar Factory and Button Factory. She was a housekeeper at several hotels, she also worked at Jerry's Main Lunch, 34 Truck Stop in West Burlington, IAAP, and the Burlington Golf Club.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Middletown. She became an avid member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #587 in 1952 holding an Acedemy of Friendships Degree, College of Regents Degree and she was the State Deputy of Southeast Iowa and Eastern Nebraska from 1990-1991. She also became active as treasurer for the VFW Post 9162 in West Burlington where she was a lifetime member. Her family will miss her dearly as will many wonderful friends. We will remember her spunk and vitality and gift for life. You could always find her working on one project or another. If you admired anything she was working on, before you knew it she would be making one for you, too.

Survivors include her husband, James of Middletown; three daughters, Carolyn Brown of Mt. Vernon, WA, Cheryl (Jim) Bonebright of Danville, IL, and Carletta Edwards of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one son, James L. (Sandy) Edwards III of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, an infant sister, and one grandson.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, January 25, at Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Women of the Moose Rites Funeral Service for Mrs. Edwards will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 26, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Private family Inurnment will be in Cambrian Cemetery , rural Columbus Junction, at 1:00 PM Saturday, Janaury 27. Memorials have been established to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Donald Decker

Donald L. Decker age 69 of Burlington, passed away at 5:25 AM Thursday, February 8, 2001, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 18, 1931, in Oquawka, Ill., He was the son of Glenn and Helen Sandstrom Decker. He married Ruth Moser, he later married Mary L. Hartman May 24, 1975 in Burlington.

He was a veteran in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict era serving in Germany. Mr. Decker was a custodian at the First Christian Church for many years. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He loved to go on walks, and enjoyed going hunting and fishing with his father.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; one son, Mark Donald Decker of Albert Lea, MN; one daughter, Diana Nelson of Burlington; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, an infant son, a daughter, Terry, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be after noon Friday, February 9, at the Hass Funeral Home until 8:00 PM. There will be no family visitation.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Decker will be 1:30 PM Saturday, February 10, at the First Christian Church. Reverend David A. Nash will officiate. Pallbearers will be Richard Smith, Jerry Hayes, Jerry Magdefrau, Warren Johnson, Larry Meyers and Jeff Taeger. Honorary Pallbearers will be Earl Stott and David Dehner. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church.

Maurice Fitch

Maurice R. Fitch, age 93 of Burlington, IA passed away at 4:15 AM, Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

Born May 30, 1907 in Lincoln, NE he was the son of Linford R. and Christina Schmitt Fitch. He married Eva Roeder in Lincoln, NE, she died December 28, 1945. He then married Vivian M. Nelson June 4, 1946 in Billings, MT.

Mr. Fitch was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran. He was a storekeeper for the CB & Q Railroad for 47 ½ years retiring in October 1971.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, Veterans of Foreign in Lincoln, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, American Association of Retired People, Railroad Pension Club, Railroad Narave, Woodsmen of the World, and the Veterans of the Railroad where he had served as President. He was a founding member of the Burlington Steamboat Senior Center and an avid Bowler carrying a 207 average.

Survivors include his wife Vivian; two sons, Robert E. Fitch of Billings, MT, and Dale R. Fitch of Spokane, WA; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Helen Polage of Raton, NM, and Dorothy Stanley of Lincoln, NE and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one daughter.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Thursday, March 15, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8PM.

The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mr. Fitch will be 10:30 AM Monday, March 19, at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery of Billings, MT with full military honors rendered. Reverend John Pugh will officiate.

In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Mobile Nursing Services, Ltd. of Burlington.

Mary Cromartie

Mary Adeline Blackwood Cromartie, age 92 of Burlington, IA passed away at 2:25 AM, Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center.

Born September 2, 1908 in Hunnewell, MO she was the daughter of William Davis and Alma Virginia Sickles Wheeler.

Mrs. Cromartie graduated from the Monroe City, MO High School and the Gem City Buisness College in Quincy, IL. She worked for five years in Fort Madison.

She married Dale Blackwood and the couple was active in Burlington Community life.

In addition to rearing two sons, the Blackwoods provided a home for several foster children, including Ronny Jones and his brother, Billy Jones; they also cared for several girls, including Debbie Warren.

Dale Blackwood died April 21, 1966, and she marreid Alphonse Kai Cromartie, who died in February 1990. Later she marreid the late Robert Martin.

Her son, Lt. David E. Blackwood, a Navy pilot, was killed when his airplane blew up in California. Her oldest son, William Blackwood, died of cancer on March 9, in Berkley, CA, 22 days before his mother died.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Laurel Amy Carlisle of Los Osos, CA, Ian Blackwood of Santa Cruz, CA, Lindsey Parker of Marshall, MI, and Devon Blackwood of Berkley, CA; one brother, Rev. Jerrold Davis Wheeler of Quincy, IL and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers, William Sheldon Wheeler and Chester Edwin Wheeler, and one sister, Edna Ruth Moss.

There will be no visitation.

The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mrs. Cromartie will be 1:00 PM Monday, April 2, at the Oddfellows Cemetery in Hunnewell, MO. Reverend Jerrold Davis Wheeler, her brother will officiate.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Kenneth Smith Sr.

Kenneth Smith Sr., age 75 of Burlington passed away at 11:35 AM Friday, April 20, 2001 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 18, 1925 in Yarmouth he was the son of Clarence Edward and Gertrude Christine Sorenson. On October 19, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Rectory he married Ruth Mary Frenzer.

Mr. Smith attended the Yarmouth and the Burlington School System. He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran serving three years.

He worked for the Sunshine Dairy of Burlington for 29 years.

Mr. Smith’s joys of life were his family and friends; he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed staying at his cabin on the Mississippi River.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Kenneth (Shereen) Smith Jr. and Michael Alan Smith both of Burlington; two grandchildren, Shawn Smith and Heidi Smith both of Burlington; three sisters, Elizabeth Mowell of Burlington, Verla Flaar of Mediapolis, and Sandra King of La Harpe, IL, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

The body of Mr. Smith has been cremated.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Tuesday at the Hass Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM.

The Memorial Service for Mr. Smith will be 10:00 AM Tuesday in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel will officiate. Full military honors will be rendered by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162 at the Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the American Lung Association.

Marcella R. Kauffman
April 10, 1918 - December 10, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After noon where the family will receive friends after a 6:30 PM Rosary until 8:00 PM December 13, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM December 14, 2002 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor John M. Hyland as Celebrant
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Born in Burlington she was the daughter of Omer A. and Julia Rose Whalen Wickerham. She married Philip J. Kauffman on December 22, 1941 in Burlington. Survivors include her husband, Philip; one daughter, Phyllis Galloway of Yuma, AZ; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Russell Wickerham and Edmond Wickerham both of Tucson, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

Mrs. Kauffman was a homemaker. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed buying and selling antiques.

A memorial has been established to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Ruth E. Crowner

Visitation: Afternoon where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:00 PM December 12, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:30 AM December 13, 2002 at St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Born in Quincy, Illinois, she was the daughter of Ralph W. and Beulah E. Shires Harig. She married Robert J. Behrman on January 15, 1949 in Mattoon, Illinois. They later divorced. She married Richard L. Allen, M.D. on February 26, 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He passed away May 26, 1986. She married James W. Crowner on October 31, 1992 in Burlington. Survivors include her husband, James; four sons, Tony Behrman of Alberta, Canada, Jim Behrman of Burlington, Robin Behrman and Jon Behrman, both of Las Vegas, Nevada; two daughters, Cathy Hazell of Burlington, and Teresa Wilson of Las Vegas, Nevada; two step sons, Jimmy Crowner and Jeff Crowner, both of Burlington; one step daughter, Jacqueline Thompson of Burlington; 18 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; one brother, William Wright of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

She graduated in 1949 from St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She was a nurse and a lab technician.

She was a member of Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church in Las Vegas. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Burlington. She was the past president of the Medical Auxiliary and the president of Our Lady of Las Vegas Women’s Guild.

A memorial has been established to the Lee County Health Department Hospice.
