Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM December 11, 2002 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery , Keokuk, Iowa

Born in Memphis, MO she was the daughter of Edmund and Dora Shook Eller. She married Thomas H. “Red” Cragan on October 11, 1939 in Keokuk, IA. He died March 3, 1986. Survivors include one daughter, Theresa Cragan of Keokuk, IA; one sister Ona Weirather of Montrose, IA; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Mrs. Cragan and her husband ran Cragan’s Homemade Ice Cream and Cragan’s Grocery. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.

A memorial has been established for SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.

Donzella Marten Hamilton
September 05, 1912 - December 02, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Funeral Service: 10:00 AM December 05, 2002 at First Christian Church (Disciple of Christ with the Reverend David A. Nash officiating
Interment: Biggsville Cemetery , Biggsville, IL

Born in Biggsville, IL she was the daughter of William P. and Mary Small Graham Glenn. She married Loyal D. “Dutch” Hamilton on July 5, 1934 in Kahoka, MO. He died February 23, 1977. Survivors include one son, Charles Hamilton of Quitman, TX; three daughters, Joyce Darrah and Sandra Beames both of Burlington and Linda Crenshaw of Albany, OR; eight grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and two nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Mrs. Hamilton was a 1930 graduate of Biggsville High School and a 1932 graduate of the Burlington School of Nursing. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Martha Circle, Jane A. Delano Nurses Association, and RSVP. She enjoyed playing pinochle, crocheting, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Leonard James Talbott
July 24, 1921 - November 11, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Memorial Service: 10:00 AM November 16, 2002 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Burlington, Iowa with Brother Allen Pygott officiating
Interment: Keokuk National Cemetery As per his request his body has been cremated.

Born in Galesburg, IL he was the son of Aubert and Edna Gunn Talbott. He married Donna Jean Kissinger on January 31, 1957 in Burlington. She died March 13, 1992. He later married Anna Marie Bohle on March 27, 1987 in Burlington. She died November 26, 1997. Survivors include three daughters, Sheri Kathleen Talbott of Fort Madison, Suzanne Camille Schneekloth and Sally Ann Talbott both of Burlington; two sons, Jimmie Dean Talbott of Burlington and Lyle Wayne Talbott of West Burlington; seven grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Talbott of Burlington; one sister, Lucille Talbott of Burlington and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wives he was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two brothers, and one sister.

Mr. Talbott retired as a Guard from the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He enjoyed serving Jehovah and the ministry. He enjoyed watching animals especially birds and playing cards

A memorial has been established to the Woodland Congregation for the world wide ministry work.

Graveside Service: 1:00 PM November 11, 2002 at Aspen Grove Cemetery with the Reverend Richard A. Purcell officiating
Born in West Burlington she was the daughter of Wendy S. Houghtby and Erik J. Bloomer. Survivors include her parents of Burlington; one brother, Gavin R. Bloomer at home; maternal grandparents, Linda Houghtby of Genoa, IL, David Houghtby of Elgin, IL; maternal great grandparents, Roberta Houghtby of Elgin, IL and Henry Werner of Pana, IL; paternal grandparents, Jim and Diane English of Burlington, Brian and Ellen Bloomer of Newark, IL; paternal great grandparents, Martha Carpenter of Burlington, Bob and Verona Bloomer of Hot Springs, AR and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal great grandfather, Roy Carpenter and one maternal cousin, Brandon Green.

A memorial has been established.

Jean H. Ewinger
December 22, 1920 - November 04, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Graveside Service: 2:00 PM November 06, 2002 at Aspen Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating
Born in Burlington she was the daughter of Percy E. and Margaret L. Thye Hult. She married James J. Ewinger on October 25, 1941 in Burlington. He died December 9, 1998. Survivors include two sons, Michael James Ewinger of Cleveland, OH and John Patrick Ewinger of Iowa; one grandson, Peter; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Ewinger attended Burlington Schools. She was a clerk for J.S. Schramm Co. She taught in the Burlington Schools during World War II and she also worked for the government in the technical information branch library at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. Her hobby was music for the schools, church and pleasure.

In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.

Joseph J. Janik
November 13, 1926 - November 02, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Born, in Whiting, IN he was the son of Andrew and Mary Ladslav Janik. He married Nell R. Johnson August 3, 1946, in Anniston, AL Survivors include his wife, Nell; two daughters, Anita Janik and Shannon Eicher both of Burlington; one son, Marty Janik of Burlington; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Jaroszewicz of Whiting, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Mr. Janik retired as a supervisor from the J.I. Case Co. after 39 years. He was a graduate of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, IN. He was US Army veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #568, a past member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie No. 150. He played baseball in his younger years, enjoyed fishing, bowling, golf and loved to dance.

A memorial has been established.

George A. Staub
January 24, 1926 - October 23, 2002
Danville, Iowa

Memorial Service: 1:30 PM October 26, 2002 at Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Reverend Trevor Davis officiating
Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Iowa Army National Guard

Born in Fort Madison, he was the son of Perry A. and Gretchen Mueller Staub. He married Betty J. Weisinger on July 4, 1947 in Denmark, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Betty; two sons, Robert W. Staub of Burlington and Rex Staub of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; one sister Evelyn Werner of Morning Sun; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, and one brother.

Mr. Staub was one of the founders of BCI Inc. He was co-owner of Hinsley Detective Agency and involved with various other area small businesses. He was a 1943 graduate of Denmark Academy High School. He was a U.S. Army Ranger Veteran of WW II participating in the Philippines campaign with the 37th Infantry Division in the 129th Infantry regiments. He then graduated in 1950 from University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and attended the University of Washington Law School. In 1950 he was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the U.S. Airforce. He was of the Protestant faith. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

A memorial has been established to the Danville Volunteer Fire Department.

James A. Helling
October 03, 1925 - October 22, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After 8:00 AM where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 PM October 25, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:30 AM October 25, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Burlington with the Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel as celebrant
Interment: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery , West Burlington with full military honors rendered by the VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corp League

Born in Ft. Madison he was the son of Albert F. and Angela A. Mohrfeld Helling. He married Wanda M. Schmidt on May 30, 1949 in Ft. Madison. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; two sons, David (Joan) Helling of Wauwatosa, WI, Thomas Helling of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren, Thomas Helling, Jeremy Helling, Cole Helling, Joshua Waters, Jacob Helling and Alexandra Helling; one sister, Alice (Carl) Helling-Peterschmidt of Reno, NV; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Helling served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a 1943 graduate of the Catholic Central High School in Ft. Madison.

He managed Helling Grocery Store at Ave. G in Ft. Madison. He then worked as a sales manager for Sunbeam Bread. He later worked for 30 years at Riley Brothers. He was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, a former member of the Jaycee’s in Ft. Madison, served on the Notre Dame Athletic Board and the Catholic Schools finance committee. He was an avid golfer; enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with his grandchildren.

A memorial has been established to the Burlington Notre Dame School System.

Donna Jo Titus
January 27, 1931 - October 18, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After 8:00 AM where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM October 21, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM October 22, 2002 at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Reverend Richard A. Purcell officiating
Interment: Inurnment will be at a later date in Burlignton Memorial Park Cemetery

Born in Rulo, Nebraska she was the daughter of Roy Goodard and Burley Drake Whalen. She married Lawrence P. “Larry” Titus on November 11, 1949 in Burlington. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence P. “Larry” Titus; five sons, Delane Titus of Spokane, WA, Dana Titus of Maple Park, IL, Daylin Titus of Prince Frederick, MD, Devin Titus of Biggsville, IL and David Titus of Mt. Airy, MD; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Harold Hogberg of Austin, TX, Robert Hogberg and Wayne Hogberg both of Burlington; two sisters, Loretta Kirkendall of Fall City, NE, Irma Runyan of Hutchinson, KS, several half brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister.

Mrs. Titus was a homemaker, wife and mother. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the church circle. She was also a member of the mainliners club. She loved crafts, cooking, flowers and spending time with her family.

A memorial has been established to the Asbury United Methodist Church.

Mildred Kurtz
October 22, 1915 - October 11, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM There will be no family visitation October 13, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Interment: Following visitation, the body of Mrs. Kurtz will be cremated per her request.

Born in Cherry Valley, Arkansas she was the daughter of Joe C. and Lora Brockett. She married Donald R. Kurtz on March 4, 1943 in Wynne, Arkansas. Survivors include her husband, Donald R. Kurtz of Burlington; one sister, Elsie Rooks of Cherry Valley, Arkansas and one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Kurtz graduated from Cherry Valley High School in 1935.

She had worked as a clerk at various stores she also was a homemaker. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed working in the yard, cooking, baking and she loved animals.

A memorial has been established to the Des Moines County Humane Society.
