Dean D. Ness
November 10, 1930 - January 10, 2002
Fort Madison, Iowa, formerly of Burlington

Visitation: Friends may call after 8:00 AM January 13, 2002 at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM
Graveside Service: 10:30 AM January 14, 2002 at Sacred Heart Cemetery
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Dean D. Ness of Fort Madison since 1996 formerly of Burlington died at 11:00 PM Thursday, January 10, 2002 at Fort Madison Community Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was 71 years old. He was born November 10,1930 at the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Camp hospital in Fargo, North Dakota to Louis Emil and Lillian Elvera Rousu Ness. When Dean was very young, his father was seriously injured while fighting a forest fire with his CCC unit. Not long after Dean’s sister, Beverly, was born, his mother also became ill. With both parents confined to permanent hospital care, the children, Dean, Beverly, and two children from Lillian’s previous marriage, Ramona and Chester, were divided between relatives. Dean was taken by his Uncle Albert Ness and his wife, Laura, and raised with their three sons, Ralph, Gordon, and Donald, in Fargo. Dean attended Fargo Public Schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with his father’s permission. He was assigned to the USS Little during the Korean War, visiting ports all over the world. He served from 1948 to 1952, at which time he received an honorable discharge. After military service, he trained as an optician and landed his first job as lens grinder at Nelson Optical in Fargo. In time, he was sent to the company’s offices in Havre, Montana. It was there in Havre that he met and married Betty Jane Murray on February 25, 1955. She died December 13, 1994

During their years of marriage, Dean and Betty raised five children—affectionately dubbed their “5 R’s”: Ramona Jean, Robert Dean, Rosalind Louise, Rene Marie, and Roderick Jay. The family moved several times as Dean looked for the best way to support his growing family. Among other things, he once co-owned a saloon in Cheyenne, Wyoming and worked as an Otis Elevator repairman in Fargo, ND. But his true calling was the optical field. His 43-year career included managerial posts with Pearle Vision Center and Duling Optical in Lincoln, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, and Burlington, Iowa. In 1983, he started his own operation, Dean’s Optical, in downtown Burlington, and a few years later opened a second store in Fort Madison, Iowa. In 1996, about a year after the passing of his dear Betty, Dean closed his original store and retired. He sold their Burlington home, and moved into the home of his daughter, Rosie, in Ft. Madison.

Dean was of the Christian faith. He was a man who practiced his faith among everyday people rather than in any church. He believed in helping the less fortunate, but he also believed in preserving a person’s pride. With some, he traded errands or odd jobs for a few dollars. With others, he simply allowed them a little more time in paying for their eyeglasses. And, although this practice never made him rich, he was also quick to share one more of his treasures—his sense of humor.

He is survived by his five children, Ramona Jean Nahorny and her husband, Mike, of Maryville, TN; Robert Dean Ness and his wife, Jackie, of Sun Prairie, WI; Rose Hind of Fort Madison; Rene Sutton and her husband, Ken, of Mediapolis; and Rod Ness of St. Paul, MN; ten grandchildren, Christine Nahorny of New Orleans, LA, Andy Nahorny of Burlington; Darcy Hind of Waterloo, Marcy Hind, Neki Hind, and Kele Hind, all of Fort Madison, Nick and Kyle Sutton, both of Mediapolis; and Rachel and Molly Ness, both of Sun Prairie, WI; and two great-grandchildren, Izabella Rose and Gage Matthew Hind, both of Fort Madison. His sister, Beverly (Ness) Fleissner, resides in Duluth, MN, and several nieces and nephews, but is mother, half-siblings, Uncle Albert and Aunt Laura, and the cousins with whom he was raised have all passed on.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Sunday, January 13, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM. The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mr. Ness will be 10:30 AM Monday January 14, at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington with the Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel officiating. Those wishing to join the procession to the cemetery are asked to meet at the Hass Funeral Home at 10:15 AM.
