Amy Sue Gadau, age 33, of Burlington, died Tuesday morning March 12, 2002 at her home.

Born April 9, 1968, she was the oldest daughter of Rich and Debbie Diewold Gadau. She attended St. Paul’s Grade School, St. John’s Middle School and was a 1986 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School. She graduated in 1988 from Southeastern Community College.

Amy was a loving daughter, and a wonderful sister to Cindy, Heather and Angie and a very special Aunt to Trevor, Madelyn & Chance. She was a very caring loving trusting & honest young woman. She was a devout Catholic and very active in her Church. Throughout her young life she devoted countless hours to her church as an altar server, a lector and most recently as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a candy striper at Burlington Medical Center. She was most proud of her work with the Children’s Miracle Network and her annual benefit auction. Amy volunteered over 1000 hours at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She crocheted baby booties and blankets for Birthright. She worked with the Des Moines County Democratic Party. Amy enjoyed cooking and was an excellent cook. Amy loved her family and friends and doing for others. She loved animals especially her cat, Donna. She never met a stranger for if she came upon a new face; within five minutes she had given them her life history and asked them about theirs.

Survivors include her parents, Rich and Debbie Gadau of Burlington; three sisters, Lucinda Gadau of Vernon Hills, IL, Heather Fisher and Angie Gadau both of Burlington; one niece, Madalyn Fisher; two nephews, Trevor Fisher and Chance McAfee; maternal grandparents, Tom & Betty Diewold of Burlington; six Aunts, six Uncles and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents and an uncle and an aunt and her great grandparents.

Friends may call after noon Thursday, March 14, at the Hass Funeral Home until 5:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 6:30 PM Rosary until 8:30 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Mass of the Resurrection for Miss Gadau will be 10:30 AM Friday, March 15, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . Memorials have been established to the Children’s Miracle Network and SS. John and Paul Catholic Church.

M. Jean Ertz
April 27, 1918 - March 18, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: Friends may call after 8:00 AM March 20, 2002 at the Hass Funeral Home until 5:00 PM. The family will receive friends after a 7:00 PM Rosary until 9:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

M. Jean Ertz, 83, of Burlington, died at 8:22 AM Monday, March 18, 2002 at the Klein Center.

Born April 27, 1918 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Leon Raymond and Florence Bulger Cummings. On June 12, 1948, she married Thomas J. Ertz in Burlington.

Jean approached life with enthusiasm and optimism. She unselfishly gave of her many talents and time to help those in need. In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Jean enjoyed sewing, reading and playing cards.

Her proudest achievement and greatest joy was her family including her husband; four daughters, Jane (Dan) Heffernan of St. Louis, MO, Connie (Gene) Siefken of Burlington,Mary Jo (Pat) Lamping of Barnhart, MO, Nancie (Mark) Cahill of Phoenix, AZ; two sons, Tom (Pattar)Ertz of Cedar Rapids, and Dan Ertz of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; one great grandchild; six sisters, Rosemary Korb of Burlington, Kathleen Parmeter of Keokuk, Connie Cummings of Davenport, Ann Smith of Brookfield, WI, Alice Luers of Burlington, Liz Passamani of Milwaukee, WI; three brothers, Hugh Cummings of Burlington, Tom Cummings of Quincy, IL, and John Cummings of Burlington; one step-sister, Lillian Johnson of West Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Wednesday, March 20, at the Hass Funeral Home until 5:00 PM. The family aill receive friends after a 7:00 PM Rosary until 9:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Ertz will be 10:30 AM Thursday, March 21, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . Memorials have been established to Great River Hospice and Burlington Notre Dame Inc.

Jamie E. Dehner, age 38, of Springfield, IL passed away at 1:57 PM Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Born January 1, 1964, in Burlington he was the son of Henry C. Jr. and Barbara Jean Payne Dehner.

Jamie was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation as a computer programmer. He was also employed at the University of Illinois at Springfield as an instructor. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1981. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Iowa State University and his Master’s Degree in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He served in the U.S. Army from 1986-1991. He enjoyed motorcycles and he was a talented musician who played many instruments. He was a member of ABATE of Illinois and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. He was a certified civil engineer.

Survivors include two brothers, Timothy E. Dehner of Burlington and Dr. Benjamin T. Dehner of Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call after noon Saturday, March 30, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM. The Memorial Service for Mr. Dehner will be 7:00 PM Saturday, March 30, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home facilitated by his two brothers. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established.

Faye B. Vogelgesang
March 07, 1897 - March 26, 2002

Faye B. Vogelgesang, age 105 of Burlington passed away at 10:50 PM Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 7, 1897, in Browning, IL she was the daughter of John and Lillie Sherrill Davis. She married Edward Vogelgesang on April 9, 1917, in Burlington. He died in December 1965.

Mrs. Vogelgesang was a homemaker. She joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at age 16. She enjoyed crocheting; she was an avid reader and enjoyed reading many topics including political. She was a devoted Democrat. She had several cats and dogs through her life.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews including, Barbara Davis of Burlington. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Monday, April 1, at the Hass Funeral Home until 12:30 PM. There will be no family visitation. The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mrs. Vogelgesang will be 1:30 PM Monday, April 1, at the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery , with Elder Suzan Strandberg of Community of Christ Church officiating. Those planning to attend the service are asked to meet at the main entrance to the cemetery at 1:15 PM. A memorial has been established.

Leonard L. Maupin
August 08, 1924 - March 31, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Leonard Lindsey Maupin, age 77, of Burlington, passed away at 11:41 a.m. Sunday, March 31, 2002, at his home.

Born August 8, 1924, in Columbia, Missouri, he was the son of William Dewey and Wilma Burnett Maupin. He married Katherine Geren on September 3, 1960 in Biggsville, Illinois.

At 17 years of age, Len lied about his age to join the Army. During World War II, he was in the Anti-Aircraft Mobile Unit. He was at The Battle of Bulge-central Europe. On the third day of the Normandy Invasion and Ardennes, Rhineland, Len was on Omaha Beach. He served from 1942-1945 in the Army protecting our country. He owned Len’s Main Street Shell for twenty years. He also worked at Big Bear and has been employed at the Burlington Golf Club for ten years. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church. He belonged to the American Legion Post #52. He loved to travel, work, repair cars, camping, animals especially his cat Sam, and most of all he loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine; two sons, Bruce (Joyce) Maupin and Bill Maupin, both of Burlington; one daughter, Sue (Tom) Birkenstock of Burlington; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Maupin of Fayette, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Friends may call after 8:00 am on Tuesday, April 2, at the Hass Funeral Home where family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Maupin will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3 in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Elder Alan B. Ourth officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . In Lieu of Flowers, a memorial has been established.

John L. Rice
September 26, 1901 - April 08, 2002

John L. Rice, age 100, of Rosebush Gardens Health Center passed away at 9:15 PM, Monday, April 8, 2002 at the Health Center.

Born September 26, 1901 in North Jackson Township, IA he was the son of John P. and Minnie Koch Rice. He married Vera Mae Vicksell on April 26, 1924 in Burlington. She died January 10, 1963.

Mr. Rice worked on the family farm and other farms. He worked at the I.A.A.P. for 23 years. He retired in 1966. He was of the Methodist faith. He was and avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed old time baseball, horseshoes and watching wrestling on television.

Survivors include two sons, Kermit E. Rice and John L. Rice Jr. both of West Burlington; two daughters, Evelyn Harris of Jacksonville, NC and Annabelle Hetz of Hawthorne, FL; 16 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren; one brother, Harold Rice of rural Oakville; three sisters, Mary Lou Yedlik of Cedar Rapids, Ruby Engel and Mabel Stimpson both of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one grandson, two great grandsons, two brothers, and 10 sisters.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Thursday, April 11, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Rice will be 10:30 AM Friday, April 12, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Reverend Tyrone C. Henderson officiating. Entombment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum. A memorial has been established to Rosebush Gardens Health Center.

Ralph L. Hollister
October 24, 1931 - April 19, 2002
Little Rock, Arkansas, formerly of Burlington

Ralph LeVerne Hollister, age 70, of Little Rock, Ark formerly of Burlington passed away at 2:00 PM Friday, April 19, 2002 at St. Vincent Catholic Hospital in Little Rock.

Born October 24, 1931 in Marietta, IL he was the son of Harold L. and Gladys Lucille Murphy Hollister. He married Polly Ann Simpson on May 16, 1949 in Clinton, IA. She died January 22, 1996.

Mr. Hollister worked for the railroad, he was a truck driver and a mechanic.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas L. Hollister of Saucier, Mississippi, Kenneth H. Hollister of Tallahassee, FL, Raymond L. Hollister of Burlington and Patrick A. Hollister of West Burlington; one daughter, Kathleen A. Connell of Tallahassee, FL; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Francis of West Dundee, IL; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call after noon Wednesday, April 24, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Hollister will be 1:00 PM Thursday, April 25, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Rev. Mr. Robert R. Gengenbacher officiating. Interment will be in North Walker Cemetery , Burlington. A memorial has been established to the American Lung Association.

Robert W. McDonald
June 05, 1923 - April 20, 2002

Robert W. “Snuffy” McDonald Sr., age, 78 of Burlington, passed away at 12:00 AM, Saturday, April 20, 2002 at his home.

Born June 5, 1923, in Burlington he was the son of Paul and Stella M. Hunter McDonald. He married Lura E. Tucker on June 5, 1948 in West Burlington.

Mr. McDonald worked for the city of Burlington in the traffic department for 16 years. He retired in 1986. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS Croatan in the North Atlantic. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Lura; three sons, Robert W. McDonald Jr. of West Burlington, Mark A. McDonald and Michael W. McDonald both of Burlington; two daughters, Margaret E. Crabtree of LaGrange, MO and Luellen M. Richenberger of Morning Sun; five grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from noon to 7:00 PM Monday, April 22, at the Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from noon to 1:00 PM Tuesday. The Funeral Service for Mr. McDonald will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 23, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Pastor Nathan M. Hornback officiating. Interment with full military honors rendered by the VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corp League will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
