Philip John McPartland, age 63, of Oxnard, California, formerly of Burlington passed away at 3:19 AM Sunday, July 7, 2002, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

Born October 8, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of Phillip Eugene and Elizabeth Thele McPartland.

Mr. McPartland was a member of the 113th Armored Calvary in Burlington for six years and then moved to California, where he was a senior engineer at the Naval Warfare Center in the Weapons Division at Point Nugu, California, for 40 years. He was recognized as the Top Outstanding Senior Engineer by the President of the United States in Washington. He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors and dedicated his life to his work.

Survivors include his twin brother, James J. McPartland of Boulder, Colorado; three aunts and one uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Friday, July 12, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends after a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:30 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. McPartland will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 13, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established.

Donald M. Gantz
January 30, 1931 - July 16, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Donald M. Gantz, age 71, of Burlington, passed away at 9:27 AM Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the Genesis Medical Center East Campus in Davenport.

Born January 30, 1931, in Burlington, he was the son of Milton C. and Helen B. Brandes Gantz. He married Betty L. Calhoun on April 10, 1955 in Fort Madison. Mr. Gantz was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a newspaper pressman at the Burlington Hawkeye Gazette, he later owned and operated Gantz Confectionery on Starr St. and West Ave. He retired from the Burlington School System after 30 years of service in 1997. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post # 7641 in New London. Since 1972, he was a member of the Iowa Association of Building Maintenance and Engineers, where he served as secretary/treasurer from 1985 to 2000. He was honored as the member of the year in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; two sons, Stephen W. Gantz of Ankeny and Robert D. Gantz of Burlington; two grandsons, Scott D. Gantz and Robert D. Gantz; one sister, Charlene H. Mooney of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call after noon Thursday, July 18, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM.The Funeral Service for Mr. Gantz will be 10:30 AM Friday, July 19, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Pastor Harry F. Hollingsworth officiating. Interment with full military honors rendered by the VFW Posts 10102, 9162, the American Legion Post 52, and the Marine Corps League will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established to the American Lung Association.

June Marie Ashby, age 56, of Burlington, passed away at 11:45 AM Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington of cancer.

Born June 27, 1946, in Negunee, MI, she was the daughter of Arthur J. and Dorothy Maltby Tousignant. She married James Edward Ashby on July 2, 1966, in Burlington at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.She graduated from Bishop Baraga Central High School in Marquette, MI, in 1964. She was a cook at the former Burlington Medical Center, now the Great River Medical Center, for 20 years. She retired on August 18, 2000. Mrs. Ashby was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.

Born on a farm in Michigan, she left when she was 18 to move to Iowa where she got married, had three kids and has been married for 36 years. She enjoyed making handmade quilts, gardening, flowers, and her cats.

Survivors include her husband, James; two sons, Michael James Ashby and Jeffery Allen Ashby, both of Burlington; one daughter, Linda Sue Scott, of West Burlington; three grandchildren, Dakota, Danielle, and Toni; two brothers, Daniel J. Tousignant, of Mount Pleasant, Michael J. Tousignant, of Gwinn, MI; five sisters, Jermaine (Bam) Tousignant, of Breckenridge, MI, Sister Joan Tousignant, of Galesburg, IL, Armene Walsh, of MI, Judy Keast, Upper, MI, and Elaine Brock, of CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

Visitation will begin after 8:00 AM Monday, July 29, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM.The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Ashby will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 30, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant. The Des Moines Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.A memorial has been established.

Evelyn Ellen Hartman
May 25, 1907 - July 28, 2002

Evelyn Ellen Hartman, age 95 of Burlington, passed away at 5:18 PM, Sunday, July 28, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center.

Born May 25, 1907, she was the daughter of Lewis and Vada Wright Wire. She married Charles “Swede” Hartman in Burlington. He died December 28, 1981.

Mrs. Hartman worked for Sickels Laundry, the Iowa Ordinance Plant, and the Winegard Co. where she retired from. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family and friends, traveling, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne J. Hartman of Burlington and Bruce E. Hartman of Bovey, MN; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Beside her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

As per her wish her body has been cremated. There will be no visitation. The Graveside Committal Service and Inurnment for Mrs. Hartman will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 1, at the Aspen Grove Cemetery , with the Reverend Shirley Bliven officiating. A memorial has been established. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Clarence W. Stumpf
July 27, 1910 - July 29, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After 8:00 AM with a Rosary recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends after a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:00 PM July 31, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home

Clarence W. Stumpf, age 92, of Burlington, passed away at 7:10 PM, Monday, July 29, 2002, at his home.

Born July 27, 1910, in Burlington, he was the son of Adolph and Kate Weyer Stumpf. He married Constance Seiberling in Burlington. She died in January of 1940. He later married Ethel M. Brust-Riffel on August 14, 1971 in Delmar, IA.

Mr. Stumpf was an electrical contractor. He owned and operated Stumpf Electric. He was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel; one daughter, Nancy A. Stanbary of St. Charles, IL; one stepdaughter, Sheryl Thogerson of Davis, IL; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Besides his first wife he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

The body of Mr. Stumpf has been cremated. Friends may call after 8:00 AM Wednesday, July 31, at the Hass Funeral Home where a Rosary will be recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends after a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:00 PM. The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Stumpf will be 1:00 PM Thursday, August 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, West Burlington, with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established to St. Vincent de Paul Society and SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church.

Carol J. Kerr
August 17, 1934 - August 22, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Carol J. Kerr, age 68, of Burlington passed away at 6:59 AM Thursday, August 22, 2002 at the Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport.

Born August 17, 1934 in Burlington she was the daughter of Carl J. and Lillian G. Hamilton Walstrom. She married Clair Tillotson, they later divorced. She then married Keith Kerr, they later divorced.

Mrs. Kerr was a Surgical Tech at the former Burlington Medical Center for 25 years and then was a self-employed cosmetologist for 10 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed crocheting and traveling.

Survivors include one son, Dennis Tillotson of Victoria, TX; one daughter, Karen Gelski of Aurora, CO; five grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Walstrom of Albuquerque, NM, John Walstrom of Dallas City, IL; three sisters, Donna Dombroski of Polson, MT, Judy Kleintobe of Quitman, TX and Vicki Blaufuss of Fenton, MO; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant daughter.

As per her wish her body has been cremated. The Graveside Committal Service and Inurnment for Mrs. Kerr will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with the Reverend David A. Nash officiating. Those planning to attend the service are asked to meet at the main entrance to the cemetery at 9:50 AM. A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Phyllis A. Geren
June 02, 1926 - August 24, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Phyllis A. Geren, age 76, of Burlington, passed away at 3:00 AM, Saturday, August 24, 2002 at her home.

Born June 2, 1926, in Burlington, she was the daughter of William E. Pohren and Mary Koenig Pohren Smith. She married William L. Geren on December 29, 1946 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington.

Mrs. Geren worked for J.C. Penny Co. for many years and was a homemaker. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and the former St. Francis Continuation Care Center Auxiliary. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include her husband, William; one son, Thomas Geren of Lyons, Colo; one daughter, Kathleen Christy of Encinitas, CA; two grandchildren; and one great grandson; four sisters, Margaret Anderson of Burlington, Patricia DeVilbiss of Roseville, CA, Sherry Petersen of Mediapolis, and Wilma Lewis of Lewiston, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Friends may call after noon Monday, August 26, at the Hass Funeral Home until 8:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Geren will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 27, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Burlington Notre Dame.

Alvin Owen Wiley Jr.
June 13, 1921 - August 29, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Alvin Owen Wiley, Jr., age 81 of Burlington passed away at 5:24 AM, Thursday, August 29, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

Born June 13, 1921 in Burlington he was the son of Alvin Owen Sr. and Marie Lulu Easton Wiley. He married Dorothy Frances Barkus July 4, 1940 in Yarmouth. She died June 19, 1997.

Mr. Wiley was a U.S. Army WW II veteran. He was awarded two bronze battle stars. He was a painter and contractor early in his life; he then worked for Murray Iron works and at the Burlington Northern Railroad shops. He was an avid coon hunter and fisherman in his younger years. He enjoyed watching baseball games on television.

Survivors include one daughter, Dianna Rounds of Burlington; three sons, Terry Wiley of West Burlington, Jerry Wiley of Burlington and Jim Wiley; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Andersen of Momence, IL and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents.

As per his request his body has been cremated. There will be no visitation. The Memorial Service for Mr. Wiley will be 2:00 PM Sunday, September 1, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Reverend Vicki J. Engelmann officiating. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
