John Hallgren
June 01, 1923 - August 31, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

John “Jack” C. Hallgren, age 79, of Burlington passed away at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center.

Born June 1, 1923 in Burlington he was the son of Arthur C. and Ruth M. Gustafson Hallgren. He married Ruth Tompkins on June 29, 1946 in Burlington. She passed away April 1, 1979. He later married Leona “Lee” Gerard on October 27, 1979 in Moline, Illinois.

Mr. Hallgren was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S Corrigirdor from 1943 to 1946. In 1952 he started Hallgren Heating, then in 1961 he partnered with Walt Schildknecht and changed the name to Hallgren-Schildknecht Heating. He retired in 1990. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579, Burlington Police Reserves, Carthage Lake Club, and was a past president of Burlington Noon Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, making stained glass and metal sculptures, woodworking, and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Leona “Lee”; one son, Jim Hallgren, of Gladstone, IL; one daughter, Barb Krieger, of New London, IA two stepsons, Bill Gerard and Jeff Gerard, both of Moline, IL;; one stepdaughter, Julie Drigot, of Milwaukee, WI; nine grandchildren and five step grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild; one sister, Marge Westfall of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Tuesday, September 3, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. The Private Family Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Hallgren will be Thursday, September 5, at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with the Reverend Donald Hoornstra officiating. Full Military Honors will be rendered by the VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corp League. A memorial has been established.

Morton P. Jones
September 26, 1926 - August 31, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Morton P. Jones, age 75 of Burlington passed away at 3:50 PM Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Parkview Care Center.

Morton Jones was born in Pleasant Grove, Iowa on September 26, 1926 and was the son of Percy and Vallie Ford Hallinger Jones. Morton attended several schools in southeast Iowa and graduated from Lockridge High School. After high school, Mort was drafted into the Army. He toured Japan and Korea and his tour of duty was up prior to the Korean War. Being a veteran, Mort was a former member of the VFW. For work Mort did ‘a little bit of everything’. Most of his work experience consisted of driving a truck locally. He retired from Lehigh-Leopold. He also used to enjoy fishing, hunting and shooting pool and had a very deep love for the Mississippi River. When asked what he liked to hunt, Morton replied, “squirrel, rabbit, deer, and pheasant.” He especially liked pheasant hunting in Marshalltown. Mort enjoyed his friends, family and his life on the river. He touched many lives and will live on in many wonderful memories. Morton was the youngest of eight children, including six sisters, Ruth. Alma, Emily, June, Vivian, Janice and one brother Karl. He shared is life with his long time friend Orvilla Lyons and her family.

Survivors include his long time friend Orvilla Lyons and her family; one brother, Karl; six sisters, Ruth, Alma, Emily, June, Vivian, and Janice and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation. The Private Family Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Jones will be Tuesday, September 3, at the Aspen Grove Cemetery . Mr. John Lyons will facilitate. A memorial has been established to the Burlington Area Homeless Shelter. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Roderick Ross Ralston
March 03, 1926 - August 31, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Roderick Ross Ralston, age 76 of Burlington passed away at 5:10 PM, Saturday, August 31, 2002 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

Born March 3, 1926 in Burlington he was the son of John W. and Mildred Fern Hays Ralston. He married Shirley L. Andrew on March 21, 1946 in Burlington.

Mr. Ralston was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in the 511th parachute infantry regiment in the South Pacific. He retired from the U.S.A.R. with the rank of Major. He attended Burlington Community Schools. He served the city of Burlington as Street Superintendent and Street Commissioner from 1971 until1979. He worked at the Exide Battery Co. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Cheri A. (Joe) Stewart and Sandy K. Blix both of Burlington; one grandchild and two great grandchildren; He is also survived by two half-sisters, Margot Foote of Michigan and Nancy Livingston of Sheridan, WY. His parents preceded him in death.

As per his request his body has been cremated and there will be no services and he requests no flowers or memorials. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

E.F. Lenz
April 16, 1928 - September 15, 2002
West Burlington, Iowa

E.F. “Ernie” Lenz, age 73 of West Burlington died at 8:31 PM, Sunday, September 15, 2002 at his home.

Born April 16, 1929 in Olwein, IA he was the son of Walter and Julia Kaberle Lenz. He married Josephine Kay on September 14, 1955 in Mason City, IA. She died August 10, 1986. He then married Colleen Conner on May 8, 1993 in Burlington.

Mr. Lenz was a graduate of Olwein High School. He was in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean conflict. He had been a salesman, musician and a farmer throughout his life. He was a member of the Chicago Heights Federation of Musicians and the Oddfellows. He loved country western music, and watching western movies. He was and avid reader, enjoyed photography and working with his hands.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen; two sons, E.F. Lenz, Jr. of Bettendorf and Jim Lenz of Burlington; three daughters, Janis Campagna of Mason City, Dawn Cover of Burlington and Becky Grilley of Henderson, NV; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one sister Carol Griffin of Minneapolis, MN; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

As per his request his body has been cremated. There will be no visitation or service. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be left at the Hass Funeral Home. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Helen Katherine Ertz
May 15, 1902 - September 29, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After 8:00 AM where a Rosary will be recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:30 PM October 03, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:30 AM October 04, 2002 at St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Helen Katherine Ertz, age 100, of Burlington, passed away at 7:20 AM Sunday, September 29, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born May 15, 1902 in rural Gladstone, IL she was the daughter of Joseph Andrew and Jeanette Mary Simpson Logan. She married Frederick Reed Ertz at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on May 19, 1920. He passed away September 14, 1976.

Mrs. Ertz was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for a number of years before joining St. Paul's Catholic Church where she remained a member until her death. She loved sewing and when not engaged doing for her children and grandchildren, she used her talents to benefit church bazaars, school pageants and Birthright.

Survivors include four sons, Roy Charles Ertz, Eugene William Ertz, Warren Thomas Ertz all of Burlington, John Mark Ertz of Escondido, CA; one daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Cullen of Newark, DE; 31 grandchildren; 67 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; and one half sister, Betty Olson of Oquawka, IL and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by one son, Paul Frederick Ertz; one grandson, Andy Ertz; one great grandson, Nathan Ertz; and one great granddaughter, Ann Elisa Smith.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Thursday, October 3, at the Hass Funeral Home where a rosary will be recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:30 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Ertz will be 10:30 AM Friday, October 4, at St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . In lieu of flowers memorials have been established to the Notre Dame Foundation teacher’s endowment fund and the Alzheimer's Association.

Earnest A. Timmerman
October 04, 1915 - September 30, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Earnest A. Timmerman, age 86, of Burlington passed away at 8:18 PM, Monday, September 30, 2002 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 4, 1915 in rural Burlington he was the son of Charles and Eva Anderson Timmerman. He married Virginia M. Burkett on December 14, 1935 in Burlington.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; three daughters, Joyce Colton of Texas, Diane Miller and Melody Peterson both of Burlington; two sons, Jack Timmerman of Wisconsin and Earnest Timmerman of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Carol Cluney of rural Danville and Wilma Stafford of rural Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

Mr. Timmerman served in the Civil Conservation Service for 18 months. He retired from Modern Welding. He was of the Baptist faith. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs.

As per his request his body has been cremated. The Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Timmerman will be held Friday, October 4, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at 604 North St. Burlington. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Dallas Houston Swepston
September 01, 1916 - December 18, 2002
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After 8:00 AM where the family will receive friends following a 6:30 PM Rosary until 8:00 PM December 20, 2002 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM December 21, 2002 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor John M. Hyland as Celebrant
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the VFW Post 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corp League

Born in Marie, West Virginia he was the son of John Maddy and Cola Swepston Allen. He married Juanita “Nita” Aldape on March 26, 1966 in Burlington. Survivors include his wife; six sons, Edward Swepston, Reggie Swepston and Jerry Swepston all of West Virginia, Robert Diaz of Palm Harbor, FL, Michael Diaz and John Diaz both of Burlington; two daughters, Judy Bojorquez of Burlington and Jessie Dickenson of Clovis, New Mexico; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Swepston retired from the JI Case Co. in March of 1985. He was a member of SS John & Paul Catholic Church, UAW 807 retirees, American Legion, Friends of the Depot, and RSVP. He enjoyed volunteering at the former St. John’s School and as a greeter for Amtrak. He enjoyed working in the yard, the flowerbeds, making things out of wood for family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Memorials have been established to SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and Friends of the Depot.

Edna O. Latta
October 03, 2003 - January 06, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Born in New London, IA she was the daughter of John and Kate Kellogg Warth. She married Marvin William Latta on August 31, 1940 in Kahoka, MO. Survivors include her husband, Marvin; twin sons, David Latta of West Des Moines, IA and Douglas Latta of Chebanse, IL; one daughter, Ann Heath of Bloomington, IN; five grandchildren; one sister, Helen Sater of Mt. Pleasant, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and four sisters.

Mrs. Latta was a 1928 graduate of New London High School. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the church Ruth Circle, a charter member of the King’s Daughters which had belonged for over 50 years. She was an avid Burlington Bees baseball fan and she enjoyed playing pinochle.

A memorial has been established to Asbury United Methodist Church.

James L. Parrish

Born in Galesburg, IL he was the son of LeRoy and Zella Walker Parrish. He married Karen S. Rohrer on May 10, 1969 in Burlington. They later divorced. He married Sharon Schach Unzicker on February 17, 1996 in Burlington. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Burlington; his mother Zella of Burlington; two sons, Ryan Parrish and Jim Unzicker both of Burlington; one daughter, Jan Kemp of Burlington; three grandsons; one brother, Gene Parrish of Knoxville, IL; three sisters, Martha Lumberry of Dahinda, IL, Mary Anderson of Carman, IL and Becky Johnson of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, one brother-in-law, one great nephew and his grandparents.

Mr. Parrish was a 1964 graduate of Williamsfield High School, Williamsfield, IL.

He was a grain inspector at Meeker’s for 18 years. Most recently he worked at BG’s Buy N Bye on the corner of Summer and Harrison for four years. He was member of Spring Grove United Methodist Church, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge # 579, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie No. 150 and the AARP.

Memorials have been established to the American Diabetes Association an the Great River Medical Center Intensive Care Unit.
