Born in Burlington, she was the daughter of Fred M. and Christine Walter Theis. She married George W. Whalen in Burlington on September 23, 1931. He passed away December 1, 1991 Survivors include one son, Robert Whalen of Burlington; one daughter, Patricia Bullinger of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Richard Theis of Pueblo, CO; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one brother.

Mrs. Whalen worked at St. Francis Hospital for twenty years. She also worked in the Salter School Lunch Program. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was a member of the R.S.V.P and she attended the Well and Wise Exercise Program. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed crocheting lap robes for the needy.

Memorials have been established to SS. John and Paul Catholic Church and the Steamboat Senior Center.

Karen Kae Torres
July 05, 1947 - February 11, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Born in Burlington she was the daughter of Leonard C. Faith and Doris M. Reid. Survivors include one daughter, Christina Carter of Lawrenceville, GA; one son, Moises Torres of Tucson, AZ; three grandchildren; one brother, Richard Faith of Silver Lake, MO; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ms. Torres worked at Motorola in Suwanee, GA.

She was of the Catholic faith. She was a member of the Moose Lodge ladies auxiliary. She enjoyed collecting lighthouses and spending time with her grandchildren.

Ray J. Prier
July 17, 1925 - February 12, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Born in Burlington, he was the son of John Raymond and Elsie Mae Hanner Prier. He married G. Eileen Beckman on June 18, 1949, in Dodgeville, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, G. Eileen; three sons, Michael R. Prier of West Burlington, Douglas J. Prier of Portland, OR and Bruce A. Prier of Knoxville, IA; two daughters, Connie E. Barngrover of Jacksonville, FL and Shawn M. Dunne of Burlington; thirteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Beverly Jacoby of Hot Springs, AR; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one sister and one grandchild.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII.

Mr. Prier was an Electrician by trade. He retired from Burlington Bank and Trust where he worked in maintenance.

He was of the Christian faith. He was a Scoutmaster for 35 years for Troop 66 of the Boy Scouts of America, where he helped many people attain Eagle Scout. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed feeding the birds. He was also a member of Full Gospel Businessmen Association.

A memorial has been established.

Eileen S. Zarn
August 07, 1923 - February 18, 2003
Carman, Illinois

Born in Burlington she was the daughter of Paul E. and Thelma I. Weik Happ. She married Gerald E. “Jerry” Zarn on March 28, 1948 in Burlington. Survivors include her husband, Jerry; one son, Randall D. (Rosemary) Zarn of Long Beach, CA; one daughter, Candace C. (Donald) Wagner of Burlington; three grandsons, Gabriel P. and Nicholas P. Wagner and Vincent E. Zarn; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death

She was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College. In her early years she had worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C., in the Chemistry Lab at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, and making false teeth at the Burlington Dental Lab. In 1961 she graduated from what is now known as the National Teachers College of Chicago. She taught school in the Chicago area for twenty-five years. She taught many different grades but spent most of her time teaching forth graders. She retired in 1985.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the church Rebekah Circle. She was previously a member of a dance club, bridge club, Professional businesswomen, the White Shrine and Eastern Star, Kings Daughters, and the Shakespeare’s Club. She was a volunteer at the Burlington Public Library, RSVP and an Ambassador for the Convention and Tourism Bureau. Eileen’s favorite thing to do was entertaining family and friends. Traveling was also a very special pastime; especially traveling to several places overseas. She and her husband have been to every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Her hobbies included reading mysteries, cooking, and flower gardening

Memorials have been established to the Bethany Lutheran Church and the Cystinosis Foundation 604 Vernon St. Oakland, CA 94610.

Philip J. Kauffman
April 24, 1915 - February 21, 2003
Yuma, Arizona formerly of Burlington, Iowa

Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM February 29, 2003 at St. Paul's Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor John M. Hyland as Celebrant
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he was the son of Mahlon and Laurell Campbell Kauffman. He married Marcella R. Wickerham on December 22, 1941, in Burlington. She died December 10, 2002. Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Galloway, of Yuma, AZ; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Kauffman was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, serving in the European Theater. He worked as a shipping clerk for Burlington Northern Railroad.

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, VFW Post 9162, and Knights of Columbus #568. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques and collected rocks and minerals.

A memorial has been established for SS. John and Paul Catholic Church.

Dorothy J. Boyle
February 14, 1924 - February 22, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Born in Nashua, IA, she was the daughter of Cecil and Nellie Watkins Schufelt. She married William “Rusty” Boyle on July 14, 1979, in Burlington. Survivors include her husband, Rusty; two sons, Michael Thompson of Bloomington, IL and Mark Thompson of Bellville, TX; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Doreen Kellogg of Broken Arrow, OK and Evalyn Lee of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Boyle worked at Winegard Co for 23 years.

She was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling.

A memorial has been established to the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Paul Cecil Wiedemeier
October 13, 1931 - February 24, 2003
West Burlington, Iowa

Born in Burlington he was the son of Ferdinand J. and Pauline Ann Jaeger Wiedemeier. On May 1, 1954 he married Delores Ann Tucker at St. John’s Catholic Church in Burlington. Survivors include his wife Delores; two sons, David Lee Wiedemeier of Des Moines and Dean Alan Wiedemeier of St. Louis, MO; two daughters, Paula Marie Wiedemeier and Pamela Sue Crable both of West Burlington; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one sister, Mary Joann Tasker of Burlington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He served two years in the U.S. Army Infantry in 1st battalion of the 4th division’s 8th infantry regiment. He was stationed near Frankfurt, Germany, Cpl. Wiedemeier was a clerk typist in company A of the battalion, part of the NATO defense force for western Europe.

Mr. Wiedemeier was a 1949 graduate of Burlington High School. He worked at J.S. Schramms as a deliveryman before he got on at the West Burlington Railroad Shops. He worked 43 years with CB&Q and Burlington Northern and Sante Fe Railroads where he was a machinist at West Burlington Shops.

He was an active member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington and past member of the church’s council and on committees to help with the Fall Festivals. He was a member of the Burlington Northern Railroad Veterans Association, International Association of Machinists, and AARP. He enjoyed music and really enjoyed listening to country western music and going to the western music shows when they were in the area or while he was traveling. In earlier years, he enjoyed roller-skating and ice-skating.

Memorial have been established to the M.S. Foundation, SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, , the church Grotto, and Burlington Notre Dame Schools.

Gwendolyn Connelly Koehler
August 20, 1916 - March 07, 2003
Davenport, Iowa formerly of Burlington, Iowa

Born in Burlington she was the daughter of William B. and Laura Mae Simms Ademeit. She married Walter J. Connelly August 17, 1937 in Burlington. He died January 6, 1963. She married Frank J. Koehler July 13, 1974 in Burlington. He died March 6, 1992.Survivors include three sons, Dennis J. Connelly of Bettendorf, Patrick J. Connelly of Kirksville, MO and Michael T. Connelly of Carson City, NV; 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Kay McIlwain of Burlington and Betty Downer of Lake Elsinor, CA and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one grandson, two brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Koehler was a switch board operator for Burlington Northern Railroad for many years and then she did clerical work for the Burlington Northern Railroad.

She was a former member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and also St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Oquawka. She was a member of the Union with the Railroad and the railroad retirees. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed crafts.

A memorial has been established.

Howard William Fritz
October 30, 1928 - March 08, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM March 13, 2003 at Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Pastor Ron Jewett officiating
Interment: Greenwood Cemetery in West Burlington

Born in West Burlington he was the son of Maurice and Arlene Johnson Fritz. He married Janice Jean Losey on February 7, 1959 in Burlington. Survivors include his wife, Janice; three daughters, Pamela Sue Fritz of San Francisco, CA, Rochelle Valene BumGardner of West Burlington, and Melanie Ann Fritz of Oakland, CA; one son William Howard Fritz of Dixon, CA; four grandchildren; one brother, Claire Fritz of West Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.

Mr. Fritz worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 15 years, then he farmed for 35 years as well as working for the U.S. Postal Service of Burlington.

He was of the Christian Faith. He loved to read. He enjoyed the outdoors, farming, astronomy, and traveling. He was an animal advocate and especially enjoyed his dog, Sebastian. He was a very kind and gentle man who adored people, never knowing a stranger.
