Born in Manly, Iowa, she was the daughter of Walter and Emma C. Engebretson Johnson. Survivors include two brothers, Thomas Cummings, of Quincy, IL, and John Cummings of Burlington; five sisters, Rosemary Korb, of Burlington, Kathleen Parmeter, of Keokuk, IA, Connie Cummings, Davenport, IA, Anne Smith, of Milwaukee, WI, and Alice Luers, of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

She was a 1943 graduate of St. Paul’s High School. She had worked at Burlington Instrument and at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. She then worked at General Electric from 1962- 1987.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed fishing, was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and especially loved spending time with her dog Chip.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Paul Walter Feight
December 29, 1930 - March 13, 2003

Born in Sterling, IL he was the son of Walter Paul and Ehster Estella Wood Feight. Survivors include three sons, Don Feight of Littleton, CO, Charles Feight of IL, Kyle Feight of Spokane, WA; three daughters, Penny Mortimer of Keokuk, Rhonda Laabs of Las Vegas, NV and Aneca Snider of Spokane, WA; seventeen grandchildren.

He was affiliated with RSVP, NWCA, and the AARP.

Sophie C. Beckman
July 11, 1907 - March 25, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery

Born in London, England she was the daughter of August Fredrick and Sophie Caroline Nitschelm Buhmeyer. She married Louis Henry Beckman on April 28, 1934 in Wapello. He died October 22, 1977. Survivors include her caregivers, Charlie and Mary Buhmeyer of Burlington; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Mrs. Beckman worked at Chittenden and Eastman for 25 years

At age 2, she came to America aboard a ship settling in Burlington and becoming a U.S. Citizen at age 16. She loved the outdoors and her dogs. Her hobbies were gardening, mowing and mushroom hunting, which she enjoyed until she was 90 years old. She continued to enjoy her yard and birds until her death.

A memorial has been established for a memorial bench at Lake Starker in Crapo Park.

Edward Louis Hausknecht
October 13, 1911 - March 27, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Two sons, Rev. Dr. Phillip Hausknecht of Las Vegas, NV, Arne Hausknecht of rural Burlington; one daughter, Martha Williams of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.

He was a lifelong active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he had served as a church treasurer, congregation council member and on stewardship and finance committees and, with his wife mildred, was an active member of Trinity's Young Married Couples Fellowship. He was a forty-four year member, and past Exalted Ruler fo No. 48, Burlington Elks Lodge, former secretary of Carthage Lake Hunting and Fishing Club, and had served as a board member of several other Burlington organizations. He began working during, and upon graduation from high school was retained for thirty-nine years by the predecessor of First National Bank (now US Bank) where he served as teller, loan officer, board member and retired as vice president and head cashier. He accepted responsibility for, and took great pride in decorating the bank at Christmas time each year until his retirement in 1976. His interests included helping people in need, fishing, woodworking, HO gauge railroading, music, making wood Christmas gifts by hand and viewing and photographing the Great River Bridge each day during its construction.

Any memorials may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Burlington, or ELCA World Hunger, 8765 W. Higgens Road, Chicago, IL 60631.

Evelyn Kampmeier
May 15, 1916 - March 30, 2003
New London, Iowa

Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery

She married Chester L. Kampmeier on February 18, 1941 in Burlington. He died March 13, 1989. Survivors include three sons, Larry Kampmeier and Paul Kampmeier both of New London, and the Rev. Gene Kampmeier of Lincoln, IL; one daughter, Lois O’Laughlin of Lincoln, IL; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; one sister Mary Hermsmeier of Spokane, WA and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and four brothers.

Mrs. Kampmeier was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Danny Wesley Weir
April 18, 1948 - April 03, 2003
West Burlington, Iowa

Survivors include his mother Delores N. Roberts and his stepfather, Gary D. Roberts, of West Burlington; four sons, Matthew Weir, Bradley Weir, Andrew Weir and Lucas Weir all of Burlington; seven grandchildren; one sister, Linda Buechel Rittmer of Prescott Valley, AZ and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, great grandparents and great uncle.

He attended Burlington Schools and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church at age 15. He worked for Standard of Beaverdale, West Burlington as a yard supervisor for many years before becoming disabled in 1985.

He was a former Musician playing in a local band in the 60’s. He loved all types of music, especially the Beatles. He like watching antique shows and Jeopardy, and going to yard sales.

A memorial has been established.

Mary Phyllis Boyle
February 24, 1915 - April 05, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: Visitation will be after 1:00 PM where a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 7:30 PM April 08, 2003 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM April 09, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendrof as Celebrant
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later time. Miss Boyle deeded her body to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Anatomy in Iowa City.

Survivors include one sister, Sister Rose Ann Boyle S.S.N.D. of Burlington; four brothers, Patrick Boyle of Burlington, William Boyle of Burlington, Raymond Boyle of Fort Madison and Thomas Boyle of Burlington and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and four brothers.

She worked at the I.A.A.P during World War II. She was a refinisher at Northwestern Cabinet, and then she worked at Leopold Desk Co for 25 years. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church. Her hobby was refinishing furniture and antiques for people.

A memorial has been established.

Lori Louise Johnson
February 19, 1975 - April 06, 2003
West Burlington, Iowa

Survivors include her parents, John and Gail Johnson and one sister Mary Johnson all of West Burlington, Iowa; one aunt, Carol Smith of Denmark, Iowa; one uncle, Terry Rashid of Fort Madison, Iowa; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Namen and Ellen Rashid and Olaf and Frances Johnson.

Miss Johnson was a 1994 graduate of Living Heritage Home School in Farmington, New Mexico.

Lori lived her life for Jesus and although she never went to college, she touched many lives through her witness and many acts of kindness towards others.

A memorial has been established.

Hazel May Griswold

Hazel May Griswold, age 104, of Burlington Care Center passed away at 9:57 PM, Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at the Care Center.

Born November 29, 1898 in Union Township Des Moines County, Iowa she was the daughter of George D. and Elizabeth Bell Milander. She married Hugh Griswold December 27, 1922 in Burlington. He died October 30, 1966.

Mrs. Griswold was a homemaker. She was an avid animal lover, enjoyed listening to the radio and was very proud to have lived in three centuries.

Survivors include one son, Norman Griswold of Burlington and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, and two sisters.

There will be no visitation. The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mrs. Griswold will be 10:00 AM Saturday, May 10, at the Spring Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Gary L. Chapman officiating. A memorial has been established. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Harry O. Peterson Sr.
July 29, 1911 - May 11, 2003

Harry O. “Pete” Peterson Sr., 91 of Burlington passed away at 10:28 AM, Sunday, May 11, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 29, 1911 in Burlington he was the son of Frank L. and Minnie Muenzenmeyer Peterson. On June 3, 1931 he married Viola Knoll in Keokuk, IA. She died January 6, 1967. He also had a longtime companion, Josephine “Joey” Huffman for 33 years. She passed away in 2001.

Mr. Peterson worked for Benson Lumber Company for 28 years. He was a lifelong resident of Burlington. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge # 579, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie No. 150. and the Teamsters Local # 283. He was an avid hunter with his boys for many years. They hunted ducks, squirrels and rabbits. He painted decoys and built duck blinds for their hunting days.

Survivors include three sons, Larry (Janet) Peterson and Ronald (Linda) Peterson both of Burlington and Harry Peterson Jr. of Fort Madison; seven daughters, Betty (Paul) Yokum of Dallas City, IL, Joan (Robert) Creighton of Burlington, Patty (Roy) Clugg of Burlington, Mary Peterson of Burlington, Carolyn (John) Osborne of Davenport, Sharon (Richard) Orwick of Burlington and Brenda Smith of Burlington; 24 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, four grandsons, two sisters, one half-brother and one half-sister.

Visitation will begin after noon Tuesday, May 13, at the Hass Funeral Home until 7:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 AM Wednesday. The Funeral Service for Mr. Peterson will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 14, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Frank R. Beaty officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established to the Des Moines County Humane Society.
