Eugene Francis Siefken, 58, of Burlington, died at 7:59 AM, Sunday, June 1, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington of a heart attack.

Born February 14, 1945 in Burlington he was the son of Ralph Edward and Jane Frances McLaughlin Siefken. He married Connie Ertz on April 23, 1973 in Burlington.

He was a 1963 graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School and a 1973 graduate of the University of Iowa with a Business Administration degree. Mr. Siefken served as a Chaplain’s Assistant in the U.S. Air Force. He had worked at Burlington Bank & Trust, Standard of Beaverdale, Brueck Construction Co., Hope Haven Development Center, Woodlands Treatment Center, and most recently at The Burlington Apartments. He was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus # 568. He enjoyed woodworking and playing golf.

Survivors include his wife, Connie; his mother, Jane Siefken of Burlington; five brothers, Ray Siefken, Bob Siefken, Dan Siefken, and Roger Siefken all of Burlington, and Tom Siefken of Rockford, IL; three sisters, Mary Ann Neff and Joanne Cook both of Burlington and Carol Wagler of New London and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents and one niece.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Wednesday, June 4, at the Hass Funeral Home until 5:00 PM. The family will receive friends at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church after a 7:00 PM Rosary until 9:00 PM Wednesday evening. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Siefken will be 10:30 AM Thursday, June 5, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . Memorials have been established to the Burlington Notre Dame Foundation Teachers Endowment fund and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Ruth Juanita Kiser
December 26, 1910 - June 03, 2003

Ruth Kiser, 92, of San Antonio, Texas, died at 7:25 PM, Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in at Regent Care Center in San Antonio.

Born December 26, 1910 in Memphis, Missouri she was the daughter of William and Mary Cunningham Notestein.

She worked for Guadalupe County Extension Services from 1960-1995. She recieved Woman of the Year Award, La Senisa Charter Chapter, from American Business Women's Association.

Survivors include her nephew, D. Michael Lee and wife Jackie of San Antonio; one brother Verne Notestein of Iowa; two sisters, Madeline Magoon of Iowa and Eloise Notestein of Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Earlene Lee.

Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Friday, June 6, at the Hass Funeral Home. The Graveside Committal Service for Ms. Kiser will be 1:00 PM Saturday, June 7, at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Shirley L. Ralston
October 16, 1927 - July 13, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: will begin after noon July 15, 2003 at the Hass Funeral Home until 8:00 PM. There will be no family visitation.

Shirley L. Ralston, 75 of Burlington, died at 6:30 AM, Sunday, July 13, 2003, at her daughter’s home.

Born October 16, 1927 in Burlington she was the daughter of Russell and Rose M. Kauer Andrew. She married Roderick Ross Ralston on March 21, 1946 in Burlington. He died August 31, 2002.

Mrs. Ralston was a 1945 graduate of Burlington High School. She worked at Sylvania as a quality controller for 17 years. She retired from the Finance Department for the City of Burlington. She was of the Lutheran Faith. She loved reading and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheri A. (Joe) Stewart of Sperry and Sandy K. (Rick Goossens) Blix of Burlington; one grandson, Curtiss W. Johnson; two great grandchildren, Zachary Johnson and Lindsay Johnson, all of Cedar Rapids; and one nephew. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will begin after noon today at the Hass Funeral Home until 8:00 PM. There will be no family visitation. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Ralston will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 16, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Graber officiating. Interment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Tammy Ann Eagen
December 02, 1958 - July 30, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Tammy Ann Eagen, age 44, of Burlington, passed away at 8:45 PM Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at her home.

Born December 2, 1958, in Mason City, IA, she was the daughter of William Roland and Martha Jean Baker Butterfield. She married Joe Leon Eagen on July 25, 1980, in Burlington. They later divorced.

She was a production operator at IAAP in Middletown.

Survivors include her daughter, Katie Michelle Eagen of Burlington; Her parents of Mason City; two brothers, Bill Butterfield of Geneseo, and Monte Butterfield of Mount Pleasant; two sisters, Bonny Davis of New London, and Kim Pepping of Silvis, IL, several nieces and nephews and her life partner, Howard “Chewy” Degen of Burlington. She was preceded in death by one son, Jacob.

As per her request her body will be cremated and there will be no service. A memorial has been established to the Great River Hospice.

Steven C. Casady
May 19, 1966 - September 02, 2003

Steven Craig Casady, 37, of Burlington, died at 2:17 AM Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of cancer.

Born May 19, 1966 in Burlington, he was the son of Carol G. and Janet L. Norton Casady. He married Shawna Lee Courtney on October 28, 1995 in Burlington. He was a 1984 graduate of Burlington High School. He attended the University of Northern Iowa and was a 1989 graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb with a degree in Law Enforcement. He was a Lieutenant for the Division of Criminal Investigation for the Burlington Police Department. He had been with the Burlington Police Department for 15 years.

Mr. Casady was a graduate of the Prestigious FBI National Academy 203rd Session Quantico,Virginia from September to December of 2000. He was the Burlington/West Burlington Optimist Club Officer of the year 2002. He started the field training officers program, and was past president of C.W.A. Local #7176. He served as an officer with the D.N.R. He was very dedicated and passionate about his job. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church having served as an alter server. He was an active member of Knights of Columbus # 568. He enjoyed spending time at his family cabin on the Mississippi River and loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Shawna; two daughters, Courtney Janet Casady and Brynn Lee Casady, both at home; one brother, James (Nancy) Casady of Burlington; one sister, Diane (Brian) Messer of Burlington; four nephews, Brent Casady, Michael Messer, Mathew Messer, and Samuel Schulte; and three nieces, Nicole Bliven, Michelle Messer, and Rachel Schulte. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Thursday until 8:00 PM at the Hass Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation. As per his request his body has been cremated. The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Casady will be 1:00 PM Friday, September 5, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the education of his children, Courtney 3 years old, and Brynn three months old.

Braden LaRose
September 20, 1954 - September 05, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Braden LaRose, 48, of Burlington, died at 3:00 AM Friday, September 5, 2003 at the Burlington Care Center. As per his request his body has been cremated and there will be no services. A memorial has been established to the Great River Hospice. The Hass Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Born September 20, 1954 in Key West Florida, he was the son of Bradley and Sylvia Brown LaRose.

He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his mother, Sylvia Roberson of Burlington; one son Augustus LaRose; two brothers, Michael Roberson of West Burlington and Jake LaRose; one sister, Annette LaRose and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

As per his request his body has been cremated and there will be no services. A memorial has been established to the Great River Hospice. The Hass Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen S. Palmer
December 17, 1912 - September 12, 2003

Helen S. Palmer of Burlington, Iowa, died at 9:02 PM Friday, September 12, 2003, at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center surrounded by family and friends at the age of 90. Her special quality of seeing the need in people and knowing how to address it in a caring and respectful manner was reflected in her personal life and her professional career as a Public Health Nurse.

Helen Marie Shannon, daughter of Leonard B. and Marie C. O’Loughlin Shannon, was born in Brookville, Pennsylvania on December 17, 1912. After attending Immaculate Conception Parochial School, staffed by Sisters of Mercy from Titusville, PA, she graduated from Mater Misericordia Academy, Merion, PA in 1932. In 1950, she received a Bachelor of Nursing Degree from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. She earned her Master of Science Degree from Boston University in 1960. On November 27, 1965, she married Dr. Hugh Douglas Palmer of Haddonfield, New Jersey in the Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, PA.

Throughout her life she contributed her time, support and energy to many worthy causes. Locally, she volunteered for several organizations including St. Francis Care Center, Burlington, she belonged to the Legion of Mary and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. She exemplified grace, dignity and goodness, and was never without kindness and humor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers: Francis T. Shannon, Harold C. Shannon, Leonard B. Shannon, Reverend Albert C. Shannon, O.S.A. and sisters; Mary Eugenia (Gene) Green and Mary Ruth Ogorchock. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her surviving family; her brothers, Reverend Joseph L. Shannon O.S.A. of Villanova, PA, Paul B. Shannon (Catherine), Mayport, PA, sisters; Sr. Theresa Marie Shannon, RSM, Merion Station, PA and Margaret Mary Ripple (John L.), Burlington, IA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends including her personal companion Sherry Siefken of Burlington. She derived great joy from the smiles of children and encouraged and nurtured many young ones into adulthood. She was a principled woman, held in high regard, whose commitment to faith, family and friends led to a wonderful life.

Visitation at Hass Funeral Home after noon Sunday September 14, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 7:30 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:30 AM Monday, September 15, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Burlington with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Immediately following the mass friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at the St. John’s Parish Center. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Brookville, PA. A service will also be held at McKinney Funeral Home in Brookville, PA later in the week.

Lester E. Rice
September 11, 1928 - September 17, 2003
Lovington, NM formerly of Burlington, Iowa

Graveside Service: 10:00 AM Friday September 26, 2003 at Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis, Iowa
Lester E. Rice, 75, of Lovington, New Mexico, formerly of Burlington, died at 9:15 PM, Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at the Nor Lea General Hospital in Lovington, New Mexico.

Born September 11, 1928 in Des Moines County, Iowa, he was the son of George and Mary Lena Brown Rice.

He worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Survivors include three sons, Robert E. Rice, Ronald L. Rice, and David D. Rice, all of Burlington; three daughters, Evelyn M. Kenney of West Burlington, Barbara J. Rice of New London, and Judy A. Fry of Osceola, Indiana; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Howard Rice of Kingston, Iowa; two sisters, Martha Mellinger of Burlington, and Erma Holcomb of Liberal, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, three brothers, and four sisters.

There will be no visitation. The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Rice will be 10:00 AM, Friday, September 26, at the Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis with Chaplain Randy Gearhart of the Great River Medical Center officiating.
