L. Maxine Krieger Ralston, age 88, of Rosebush Gardens Health Center, died at 7:40 PM, Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at the health center.

Born July 25, 1915, in Rome, Iowa, she was the daughter of Frederick P. and Margaret L. Smith Williams. She married Milton W. Krieger on January 27, 1934 in Ottumwa. He died September 23, 1982. She then married Jack L. Ralston on June 14, 1986 in Burlington, Iowa. He died August 2, 1999.

Mrs. Ralston attended Mount Pleasant High School. She worked for Sylvania for 18 years and retired from the Burlington Community School District. She was a member of First Assembly of God. She belonged to the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies in Stitches, and D.A.V. Auxiliary. She attended the Steamboat Center where she enjoyed dancing. She also crocheted baby hats for Burlington Medical Center and Great River Medical Center, volunteered at Corse School and was an avid card player.

Survivors include one son, William (Connie) Krieger of Burlington; four grandchildren, Kelly (Jay) Estes of Virginia Beach, VA, Michelle Krieger of Bettendorf, IA, Kyle Krieger of USAF, England, and Garret Krieger of Burlington; two great grandchildren, Brenna and Camryn; and several nieces and nephews. Besides both husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.

Visitation will be after noon Friday at the Hass Funeral Home until 7:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Saturday. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Ralston will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 27, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Pastor Don Crawford officiating. Interment will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery . Memorials have been established for First Assembly of God and Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Phila Ellen Dochterman
June 15, 1915 - September 25, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Phila Ellen Dochterman, age 88, of Burlington, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at 2:22 PM at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born June 15, 1915, in Huron Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, Phila was the daughter of Lewis and Inez Charbonneau Davis. She attended Huron School.

She married Harold Dawson and later married Orville Dochterman October 2, 1976 in Burlington. Phila professed her love for God at an early age and never wavered from that love. She owned and operated a nursing home in Burlington for many years, giving care with great compassion to all those whom she cared for. Phila volunteered most of her adult life and during this time received several Governor Volunteer Awards from the State of Iowa and several Des Moines County Human Service Volunteer Awards. She had worked for the IAAP Plant in Middletown, Des Moines County Home, Black Hawk County Home in Waterloo, St. Francis Care Center, and Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Survivors include her husband, Orville; one daughter Evelyn Schulz of Mediapolis, IA; one step son, Jim Dochterman of Holland-Patent, NY; five step daughters, Judy Jones of La Harpe, IL, Susan Lemon of Sarasota, FL, Mary Fickel and Barbara Kelley, both of Burlington, and Elizabeth Walsh of Evansville, IN; three grandchildren; nineteen step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; fifteen step great grandchildren; four brothers, Marshall Davis of Littleton, CO, Sheldon Davis of Norwich, CT, Melvin Davis of Las Vegas, NV, and Marvel Davis of Burlington; three sisters, Lily Mae Hillson of San Antonio, TX, Iola Meacham of The Village, FL, and Clarissa Hester of Chagrin Falls, OH; plus many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by one daughter, her parents and three brothers.

Friends may call after 9:00 AM Sunday, September 28, at the Hass Funeral Home until 7:00 PM where the family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Dochterman will be 10:30 AM Monday, September 29, at the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Tim Vaughan, Vernon Spinner, Anita Forsberg and Leah Beyer officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . A memorial has been established.

Adian Lee Westerbeck

Adian Lee Westerbeck, son of Eric Lee Gammons and Megan Ann Westerbeck died shortly after birth Sunday, September 28, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Survivors include his parents, one half brother, Tevin Gammons; maternal grandparents, Lisa and Rick Bauer of Burlington; paternal grandparents Diana Cooper of Burlington and Larry Gammons of FL; maternal great grandmother, Jean Westerbeck; maternal great grandfather, Harold Bauer. He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandfather and great grandmother and his paternal great grandparents.

The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Adian Lee Westerbeck will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 30, at Aspen Grove Cemetery Baby Land with the Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel officiating.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Verlee M. Johnson, age 85, of Burlington, died Monday, September 29, 2003 at 7:55 AM at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born October 16, 1917 in Yellow Spring Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Burton and Viola McDonald Ibbotson.

She worked at Osco Drug Store and at People Drug Store retiring in 1989. She belonged to Grace Bible Church in Wever. Verlee enjoyed sewing and playing the organ and was an avid sports fan. But most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy (David) Kimmel of Burlington; two grandchildren, Dana Helmers of Burlington, and Jill (Sonny) Clayton of Cedar Rapids; five great grandchildren, Brock McLeland, Kami McLeland, Alex Clayton, Cameron Clayton, and Ethan Clayton; one brother, Gene Ibbotson of Des Moines; one sister, Arlene Walker of Urbandale, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two brothers, and two sisters.

Visitation will be after noon Wednesday, October 1, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM. The Funeral Service for Verlee will be 10:30 AM Thursday, October 2, at the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Dutzer officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established to Genesis Fellowship Church.

Dwight H. Senf
October 14, 1925 - September 30, 2003

Dwight H. Senf, age 77, of Burlington, died at 2:27 PM Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born October 14, 1925, in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Oscar Harold and Delilah Ellen Stewart Senf. He married Karen E. Christy on June 1, 1975 in Oquawka, Illinois.

Mr. Senf was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII serving in the American Theatre and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He worked for Big River Lumber Company for twenty-five years and worked for Shipley Construction Company for twelve years. He was of the Christian faith. He was a past member of the V.F.W. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed gardening and yard work and liked to watch the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; two sons, Danny Senf of Blanchaydville, WI, and Chellis Senf of Knoxville, IA; five daughters, DeeAnne DaVolt and Denne Grelk, both of Fort Madison, Nancy Billings of Stronghurst, IL, Peggy Barnes of Fort Madison, IA, and Dee Dewein, Northern, IA; two step sons, Gregory Simpson of Benton, IL, and Scott Simpson of Bremerton, WA; numerous grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Senf of Venice, FL, and Jack Senf of Dallas City, IL; two sisters, Barbara Sue Dowell and Shirley Boon, both of Fort Madison, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

There will be no visitation. As per his request his body has been cremated.. The Graveside Committal Service and Inurnment for Mr. Senf will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 3, at the Keokuk National Cemetery with the Rev. W. Michael Biklen of Santa Fe United Methodist Church in Ft. Madison officiating. Full Military Honors will be rendered by V.F.W. Post 3508 and American Legion Post 41. A memorial has been established. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Don R. Mackie

Don R. Mackie, 74, of Burlington, died at 11:50 AM, Monday, October 13, 2003 at his home.

Born October 14, 1928 in Topeka, KS he was the son of Clarence and Mildred Furgason Mackie. He married Barbara A. Goodwin Heyland on January 30, 1971 in Kahoka, MO.

Mr. Mackie grew up in Kansas. He was a1946 graduate of Tecumseh, KS High School. He then entered the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean conflict. He was in management with United Parcel Service in Des Moines retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Woodcarvers Association, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579 and the American Legion Post # 52. He enjoyed woodcarving, especially birds which are enjoyed by many people from coast to coast.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; three sons, Rick Mackie of Troy, MI, Jeff Mackie of Burlington, and Tom Mackie of Norwich, Norfolk England; four stepsons, Michael Heyland of Jamaica, IA, Rick Heyland of Denmark, Steve Heyland of Burlington and Jon Heyland of Fort Madison; 21 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Connie Riffel and one infant brother.

As per his request his body has been cremated. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 16, from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at Harvest Bible Church 2360 Hwy 61 on Old Hwy 61 S. in Fort Madison. The Memorial Service for Mr. Mackie will be 10:00 AM Friday, October 17, at the Harvest Bible Church with Pastor Jon Heyland officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Nauvoo City Cemetery # 2 Nauvoo, IL. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Mary M. Smyth
February 27, 1918 - October 20, 2003
Batavia, Illinois

Mary M. Smyth, 85, of Batavia, Ill., died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Firwood Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 27, 1918, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Flora Maddox. She married Stanley Smyth. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of Holy Angels Church.

Survivors include one son, James Smyth of Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Frances Smyth and Ada Walker, both of Iowa; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one half sister.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Daleiden Lake Street Mortuary, 220 N. Lake St., Aurora, Ill. 60506. The funeral for Mrs. Smyth will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Daleiden Lake Street Mortuary and 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Church in Aurora. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington with the Rev. Father Gerald Hoenig officiating. A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer's Disease Foundation. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the local arrangements.

John Mark Orth
August 06, 1942 - October 29, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: after 1:00 PM October 31, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where there will be a 3:00 PM Rosary. The family will receive friends following a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service at the church until 8:30 PM.

John Mark Orth, age 61, of Burlington, died at 4:11 PM Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport.

Born August 6, 1942 in Burlington, he was the son of William H. and Catherine L. Schier Orth. He married Mary Rose Mumme on December 29, 1962 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington.

Mr. Orth was a 1960 Notre Dame High School graduate. He retired from J.I. Case Company in 1991 after 28 years of being a repairman on the assembly line. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church and U.A.W. #807. He liked to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Bears, and the St. Louis Cardinals play but most of all he enjoyed watching races, especially Dale Earnhart and Jeff Gordon. He also enjoyed restoring old cars.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Rose Orth of Burlington; two daughters, Michele Johnson of Burlington and Mindy Peterson of West Burlington; two sons, Mark Orth and Matthew A. Orth both of Burlington; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild expected in March of 2004; one sister, Sister Virginia Orth S.S.N.D. of Montgomery City, MO; three brothers, William Orth, Michael Orth, and Ron Orth all of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Friends may call after 1:00 PM Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where there will be a 3:00 PM Rosary. The family will receive friends following a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service at the church until 8:30 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Orth will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 1, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. John M. Hyland as celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established.
