Debra K. Polson, age 49, of Burlington, died 2:37 PM Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center.

Born September 21, 1954 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joe and Janet Smith Benedict. On July 27, 1974 she married Steven P. Polson in Burlington.

She was a 1972 graduate of Burlington High School and a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. Mrs. Polson was a homemaker, a clerical worker, and she also worked at Hope Haven. She was of the Protestant Faith. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. She enjoyed crocheting, genealogy, and fishing, but, most of all, she enjoyed taking care of her family.

Survivors include her husband,; one daughter, Jamie Lambert of San Jose, CA; her mother, of Burlington; one granddaughter; one brother, Kent Benedict of Burlington; one sister, Beverly Benedict of Burlington; one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation will begin after 8:00 AM Monday, November 3, at the Hass Funeral Home where family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The Private Funeral Service will be Tuesday, November 4, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Interment will be in Greenglade Cemetery , Farmington. A memorial has been established.

Carl F. Vorwerk
February 13, 1915 - November 01, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Visitation: After noon where there will be a Rosary recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:30 PM Tuesday November 04, 2003 at Hass Funeral Home
Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00 AM Wednesday November 05, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church
Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

Carl F. Vorwerk, age 88, of Burlington, died 8:50 PM Saturday November 1, 2003 at his home.

Born February 13, 1915 in Dodgeville, Iowa, he was the son of Lawrence A. and Nellie G. Haag Vorwerk. On October 1, 1949 he married Frances W. Weidmann at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Burlington.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII serving with 760th Tank Battalion in Sicily, Italy, and North Africa from 1942 until 1945. Mr. Vorwerk was a cabinet maker at Lehigh Leopold for 34 ½ years. He retired in 1979. He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church and Oblates of St. Benedict. He was with the Boy Scouts for seven years of which five years he was a Scout Master. He was a 20 year member of St. Vincent DePaul Society and for 12 years he was head of the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, baseball, hunting, nutting, and was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; three sons, twins Lawrence Vorwerk of Nothfield, MN and Leo Vorwerk of Jacksonville, FL and Andrew Vorwerk of Cedar Rapids, IA; three daughters, Helen Sprowl of Lexington, OH, Janine Imthurn of West Burlington and Linda Anne May of Burlington; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; one brother, Religious Brother Anthony Vorwerk, of Atchison, KS; three sisters, Emily Sander of Burlington, Irene Clark of Burlington, and Joan Kurtz of Sebastion, FL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.

Visitation will begin after noon Tuesday, November 4, at the Hass Funeral Home where there will be a Rosary recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends following a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:30 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Vorwerk will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 5, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Veteran’s Honor Guard VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corp League. Memorials have been established for St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and SS. John and Paul Catholic Church.

Muriel L. Buss
September 07, 1907 - November 13, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Muriel L. Buss, 96, of Burlington died at 2:10 AM, Thursday, November 13, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born September 7, 1907 in Centerville, IA she was the daughter of Jobe E. and Kate Gedney Jones. She married Russell D. Buss in Fort Morgan, CO. He died in June of 1969.

Mrs. Buss was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Swan of Portsmouth, VA and Margot Price of Burlington, and many grandchildren; one sister Irene Fisher of Burlington, with whom she lived with; and one brother Maurice Jones of Durant. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, three sons, and one brother.

As per her request her body has been cremated and there will be no services. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Opal M. Carlson
January 14, 1926 - November 24, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Opal M. Carlson, age 77, of Burlington, died 10:20 AM Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 14, 1926 in Burlington, she was the daughter of James W. and Ive Leonard Robins. She married James Ledbetter in 1941. He died in 1944 during World War II. On September 12, 1946, she married Richard K. Carlson in Burlington. He died April 24, 1987.

Mrs. Carlson was a homemaker. She was a crossing guard for school children and she also volunteered. She was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. She belonged to R.S.V.P. and Golden Oldies. She collected dolls and angels and enjoyed doingembroidery for other people.

Survivors include one son, Michael J. Ledbetter of Beatrice, NE; three daughters, Janice M. Ledbetter, Mary Lou Peterson, and Michelle A. Fritz, all of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents, one infant daughter, one infant grandson, one sister and two brothers.

There will be no visitation. The graveside committal service and interment for Mrs. Carlson will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 26, at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. A memorial has been established. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Shirley Jean Bowman
November 25, 1937 - November 27, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Graveside Service: 10:00 AM Saturday January 17, 2004 at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Captain Allen Otto officiating
Shirley Jean Bowman, 66, of Burlington, died at 7:00 AM, Thursday, November 27, 2003, at her home.

Born November 25, 1937, in Lockridge, she was the daughter of Ralph and Kathleen McFadden Scearcy. She married David W. Bowman July 15, 1977 in Burlington.

Mrs. Bowman was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith. She was an avid wrestling fan. She enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and a lot of camping.

Survivors include her husband, David; two sons, Melvin Nichols of Mexico, MO and Rubin Bowman of Burlington; five daughters, Donna Nichols of Sereda, WV, Sherry Brueck, Margarita Nichols, Anita Nichols, and Julie Hummer all of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be after 9:00 AM Sunday, November 30, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM. As per Mrs. Bowman's request after the visitation her body will be cremated. Inurnment will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 17, 2004 in Aspen Grove Cemetery with Captain Allen Otto officiating. A memorial has been established.

Marie J. Hamilton
August 29, 1932 - November 28, 2003
Burlington, Iowa

Marie J. Hamilton, 71, of Burlington, died 10:20 AM Friday, November 28, 2003 at Burlington Care Center.

Born August 29, 1932, in Andover, South Dakota, she was the daughter of Didrick and Tena Westerman Ritz. On January 30, 1984, she married Charles D. “Chuck” Hamilton in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mrs. Hamilton was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church. She enjoyed horse races, traveling, golf and tin collectibles.

Survivors include her husband, Charles D. “Chuck” Hamilton; one son James Brady of Quitman, TX; two sisters, Sue Boyack and Mabel Cannon, both of Utah; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Jeffery Brady, three brothers, and one sister.

There will be no visitation. As per her request her body has been cremated. The Memorial Service for Mrs. Hamilton will be 1:30 PM Monday, December 1, 2003 in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Reverend David A. Nash officiating. A memorial has been established for Burlington Care Center’s Alzheimer’s Unit.

Michael E. Odell

Michael E. “Mickey” Odell, age 57, of Burlington, died 5:30 PM Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at his home.

Born March 20, 1946 in Keokuk, he was the son of Dr. Wilbur C. and Elizabeth L. Phillips Odell. On June 26, 1966 he married Thelma T. Johnson in Keokuk. He was an insurance agent since 1978. Mr. Odell was a 1965 graduate of Keokuk High School. He attended Marquette University. He was an Air Control man in the U.S Navy during Vietnam.

He belonged to First United Methodist Church. He was Past President for S.E.I.A. Assoc. of Life Underwriters. He was a member of the American Legion Post 41 of Keokuk, V.F.W. Post 10102, and the Masons of Davenport. As a youth he was an Eagle Scout and in Demoly. He was a District Leader, Troop Leader and Cub Scout Leader for the Boy Scouts of America and belonged to the Order of the Arrow and the Tribe of the Silver Tomahawk. He was a staff member at Camp Eastman. He enjoyed outdoor sports such as golfing, boating, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma; one son, Thomas M. Odell, of Burlington; one daughter, Tiffany M. Odell of Coralville; two sisters, Sheila Meadows of Prole, Iowa, and Cynthia Carr of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Friends may call after 9:00 AM Sunday, December 7, at the Hass Funeral Home where family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Odell will be 10:00 AM Monday, December 8, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Dennis G. Tevis officiating. Interment will be in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military honors rendered by V.F.W. Post 3508 and American Legion Post 41 at 12:30 PM Monday. Memorial have been established to the American Cancer Society, Make a Wish Foundation, and Great River Hospice.

Mary Antoinette Smith
August 05, 1928 - December 16, 2003

Mary Antoinette Smith, age 75, of Burlington, formerly of Amarillo, TX, died 3:00 AM Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 5, 1928 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Elnor and Antoinette Cummings Kibling. On February 28, 1948 she married Orval C. Smith in Burlington. He died January 31, 1969.

She graduated from St. Paul’s High School in 1946. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church in Burlington and St. Thomas Catholic Church in Amarillo, TX. She enjoyed arts and crafts, ceramics, caning, crocheting, quilting, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include six sons, Donald (Rosalie) Smith and Daniel (Glenda) Smith, both of Burlington, David (Tina) Smith of Mount Pleasant, Duane (Kathy) Smith of Sperry, Doug (Jeanie) Smith of Mediapolis, Dennis (Cindy) Smith of Carman, IL; four daughters, Donna (Randy) Ballard, Dionne (Mark) Burns and Deb (Vince) Martin all of Amarillo, TX, and Deana (Larry) Newby of Denmark; 23 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Kibling of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Loretta Mellinger of Washington, IA and Virginia Overberg of West Point, IA; many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Denise Embree, one granddaughter, two sisters, and three brothers.

Friends may call after noon Thursday, December 18, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Smith will be 10:00 AM Friday, December 19, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant.
