Rev. Mr. Richard Dean Hammer, 66, of Burlington, died at 1:40 PM, Monday, May 10, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital Houston Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
Born December 31, 1937, in St. Joseph, Iowa, he was the son of William F. and Florence K. Benge Hammer. On October 3, 1959, he married Florence Laura Goche in Bancroft, Iowa.
He graduated from St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph, Iowa. He served in the National Guard. Then he received his Associates Degree in accounting from Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City, Iowa. He was an auditor for the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance for 20 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington where he served as a deacon. He was ordained a deacon on June 13, 1992. He was a member of Knights of Columbus # 568 and St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye’s fan. He enjoyed cardinal birds, his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he enjoyed his ministries which included visiting the homebound and shut-ins and his work with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; five sons, William Hammer of Wever, Michael Hammer of West Burlington, Thomas Hammer of Omaha, NE, James Hammer of West Burlington, Donald Hammer of Des Moines; one daughter, Joni Long of Coralville; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, David Hammer of Fort Dodge, Iowa; twin sisters, Janet Rustemier of Houston, TX and Joyce Ripperger of Casper, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Friends may call after 9:00 AM Thursday at the Hass Funeral Home until noon. A Chaplet of Divine Mercy Service will be at 3:00 PM at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington where family will receive friends at the church following a 7:00 PM Rosary until 9:00 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Rev. Mr. Hammer will be 10:00 AM Friday, May 14, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington with the Most Reverend William E. Franklin as celebrant. Msgr. John Hyland, Frs. Michael Phillips, Gerald Stouvenel and Patrick Hilgendorf, Thomas Reilman and Pat Lumsden will be concelebrants. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery
in Iowa City at 3:00 PM Friday. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established to the St. Vincent DePaul Society and Birthright.

Marion “Griff” Griffin, age 83, of Burlington, IA, died May 21, 2004, at the home of his son following a three-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Griff was born January 1, 1921 in Washington, IA. He was the last of five children born to Lillie (Edwards) and Charles E. Griffin.
Griff graduated from Washington High School in 1939 and then attended Washington Junior College. He served in the Pacific theater aboard Navy ships LST 480 and 949. He attained the rank of Chief Motor Machinist Mate First Class. He was honorably discharged January 1946. Upon return to Washington he worked in the automotive field, including owning his own filling station. Griff married Dolores Adam September 6, 1950 in Washington; they moved to Burlington in 1952. Griff and Dolores had four children: Chuck, Cindy, Marsha, and Pam. Griff was preceded in death by wife Dolores on July 9, 1986. He later married Marilyn Berkshire-Grimes, she also preceded Griff in death in September 1996. Griff delivered bulk fuel oil for City Service, was office manager for Carmean Oil, sold plumbing supplies for A.Y./ McDonald, and work in automotive parts sales for Yetter Oil and Sieg Co., he also worked for Des Moines County secondary roads shop as foreman, retiring in 1986. He continued working part-time mowing grass for Burlington Community Schools until 1990. Griff was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, Homebuilders Class; Iowa and US LST associations and attending the reunions; former cub master of Pack 8, he was also the recipient of the BSA District Pilot Award; Charter member of the Burlington Evening Lions Club, he also was recipient of the Warren Coleman Award and was a Melvin Jones Fellow; Griff was a regular at Friday Fest and the Burlington Bees where he volunteered cooking brats for the Lions. Griff was a 32nd Degree Mason KAABA Shrine and Des Moines Lodge #1, Eastern Star EC Blackmar #306; American Legion Post 52, Des Moines County Historical Society. Griff enjoyed playing cards, family gatherings, and camping.
Besides his wives he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three sisters, and one grandson. He is survived by his son, Chuck and wife Julie, Burlington; daughters Cindy Van and husband Kent, Cora Wyoming, Marsha, Mason City, and Pam, Waterloo; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call after 9:00 AM Monday, May 24, at the Hass Funeral Home where a Masonic Service by Des Moines Lodge #1 will be at 6:30 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Griffin will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 25, at Grace United Methodist Church with the Reverend Trevor Davis officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery
with full military honors rendered by the Veteran’s Honor Guard VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League. Memorials have been established for Grace United Methodist Church and Shriners Crippled Children Hospital, Chicago.
Karen J. McCann

Karen J. McCann, 67, of Burlington, died at 4:35 PM, Sunday, May 23, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born October 16, 1936 in Fairfield she was the daughter of Ott L. and Mildred A. Swarts Kerr.
Mrs. McCann was a packer at Vista Bakery. She was a 1954 graduate of Danville High School. She was also a graduate of Hannibal-LeGrange Junior College in Hanibal, MO. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, collecting stamps and old coins and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Survivors include three sons, Rick McCann of Yokohoma, Japan, Daniel Schulz of Jacksonville, FL and Daryl Schulz of Topeka, KS; one brother, Lael K. Kerr of Corpus Christi, TX and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Drayton, three brothers, Leamon Kerr and two in infancy.
As per her request there will be no visitation or services. The body of Mrs. McCann has been cremated. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
Jacob Ray Vance

Jacob Ray Vance, son of Jerry Lee and Kristie Anne Vice Vance was stillborn Sunday, May 23, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Survivors include his parents, two bothers, his twin Matthew Joseph Vance and Jeremy Vance at home; maternal grandmother, Shannon Eicher of Burlington; paternal grandparents Charlotte Wallerich of Danville and Merle Vance of Charlotte, IA; maternal great grandmother, Nell Janik of Burlington; and several Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandfather and his paternal great grandparents.
The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Jacob Ray Vance will be 2:00 PM, Friday, May 28, 2004 at the Hillsboro Cemetery
with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. A memorial has been established. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Mildred “Millie” Mattoon, 82, of Burlington, died at 5:45 AM, Sunday, May 23, 2004 at the Parkview Care Center.
Born December 27, 1921 in Burlington she was the daughter of George H. Sr. and Etta Pearl Blansett Webb. She married Warren Leslie Mattoon, Sr. on September 29, 1940 in Canton, MO. He died June 22, 1992
Mrs. Mattoon was a manager for Echo Valley Trailer Park. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Ruth Rebekah Lodge, Moose Lodge Auxiliary, Burlington Gym and the Sweet Adelines. She loved camping and reading. She also liked to crochet, roller-skate, and make costume jewelry.
Survivors include one son, Warren “Butch” Mattoon, Jr. of Burlington and one daughter, Karen Foulk of Burlington; four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; one brother, Edward “Jack” Webb of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be after 9:00 AM Wednesday, May 26, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Mattoon will be 10:00 AM Thursday, May 27, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Graber officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established for Hope Haven Development Center.
Bernice Caroline Palliser

Bernice Caroline Palliser, 81, of New London died at 2:40 PM, Friday, May 28, 2004 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Feb. 12, 1923 in Aurora, IL she was the daughter of Virgil D. and Mattie Matilda Markham Johnson. She married Alfred H. Koenig in October 1943 in Wichita, KS. He died in June 1967. She married Delbert H. Palliser April 15, 1961 in Beverly, IL. He died March 3, 1988.
Mrs. Palliser worked on planes for Boeing Aircraft during World War II. She then worked for International Shoe Co. in Quincy, IL. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Quincy, IL. She lived in Quincy for 78 years. She was an excellent cook.
Survivors include one son, Alan Koenig of West Burlington; one step daughter, Lilly Williams of Ewing, MO; one granddaughter, Megan Plath; one great grandson, Dalton James Koenig; one brother, Charles Johnson of Braintree, MA; one sister, Gloria Johnson of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one infant sister, and one brother.
As per the request of Mrs. Palliser her body has been cremated and there will be no services.
Orville M. Stewart

Orville M. Stewart, 84, of Burlington, died at 10:20 PM, Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.
Born February 11, 1920 in Burlington he was the son of William Marsten and Eva Jane Cable Stewart. He married Corrine Alice Bowman on Mar. 17, 1948 in Muscatine. She died August 12, 1991.
Mr. Stewart was a cement truck driver for Burlington’s W.G. Block Co. for over 35 years. He was a W.W. II U.S. Army veteran. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping and spending time with his family.
Survivors include four sons, Danny Stewart of Burlington, Jerry Stewart of Tucson, AZ, Terry Stewart of Burlington and Robert Wahl, Jr. of Burlington; two daughters, Betty Calhoon of Lomax, IL and Stella L. Wahl of Mt. Pleasant; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one brother, William Stewart of Burlington; one sister, Delores Gerst of Gladstone; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, one granddaughter, five sisters, and four brothers.
Visitation will be after 8:00 AM, Tuesday, June 1, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM. Richard F. Hill, 80, of Burlington died at 4:00 AM, Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at his home.
Born June 7, 1924 in Henry County, Scott Township, IA he was the son of Homer Valentine and Jessie E. Williams Hill. He married Thelma L. Ledbetter on January 23, 1954 in Monmouth, IL.
Mr. Hill was a Quality Control Inspector at Iowa Industries Champion Spark Plug, Co. for 30 years. He retired June 30, 1987. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Burlington serving as deacon and a trustee. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579. He enjoyed camping, gardening, and his barnyard animals. He especially loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma; three sons, Edward Hill of Burlington, David Hill of Mt. Pleasant, and Paul Hill of Sperry; one daughter, Judy Palmer of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Hill of Mt. Pleasant and William Hill of Ft. Madison; one sister, Hazel Eagen of Davenport and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Visitation will begin after 8:00 AM, Thursday, June 17, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mr. Hill will be 10:00 AM Friday, June 18, at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Tyrone C. Henderson officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church.
