Hilda Mae Baker, 67, of Burlington, died at 4:32 PM, Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center.

Born June 8, 1937, in Moulton, Iowa she was the daughter of Homer and Grace Fincher. She married Maurice "Jack" Baker on December 5, 1957 in Moulton, Iowa. They later divorced.

Mrs. Baker was a Homemaker. She enjoyed watching soap operas, crocheting, needle point and cross stitching.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah M. Krieger and Juanita J. Baker both of Burlington; five sons, Morris J. Baker, Michael W. Baker, Douglas L. Baker, Gary D. Baker, all of Burlington and Kenneth R. Baker of Ft. Madison; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren and three brothers, James Fincher, Robert Fincher, and Rodney Fincher all of Moulton, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one nephew.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM Saturday at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. After the visitation as per the request of Mrs. Baker her body will be cremated. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established.

Kenneth Maynard La Fortune
November 19, 1953 - July 06, 2004

Kenneth Maynard LaFortune, 50, of Burlington, died 11:10 PM, Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 19, 1953, in Stephan, South Dakota, he was the son of Conway and Patricia Greyowl Scott. He married Theresa M. Neises on March 6, 1981 in Galvenston, Texas.

Mr. LaFortune worked in construction for most of his life, more recently he worked in landscaping. He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. He enjoyed fishing, drawing, and making Native American arts.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa; one son, Adam LaFortune of Burlington; two daughters, Demeisha Wolf of New London, and Autumn LaFortune of Burlington; three grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Greyowl of Ft. Thompson, SD; three sisters, Mary E. Brinck of Vivian, SD, Genny Hunter of Huron, SD and Beverly Carpenter of Rapid City, SD; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one brother, and two sisters.

As per the request of Mr. LaFortune his body has been cremated. Friends may call after 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Thursday, July 8, at the Hass Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Friday. The Memorial Service for Mr. La Fortune will be 10:00 AM Friday, July 9, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel officiating. A memorial has been established.

Robert P. Geren
April 14, 1923 - July 17, 2004

Visitation: Friends may call afternoon where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:00 PM Tuesday July 20, 2004 at Hass Funeral Home

Robert P. Geren, 81, of Burlington, died at 9:00 PM Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 14, 1923, in Burlington, he was the son of Clifton S. and Vera V. Schick Geren. On September 6, 1947, he married Margaret M. “Peg” Ertz at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington.

Mr. Geren worked at Burlington Bank and Trust for 41 years, retiring as Vice President and Manager of the Roosevelt Ave. branch. After he retired, he worked at Zaiser’s Florist and the former Sheagren Funeral Home. He was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School. During World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Army as a Corporal, with overseas service in France, Belgium, and Germany. He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, Knights of Columbus #568, Burlington Noon Lions Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, American Legion Post #52, Y.M.C.A. Keenagers, 50 years member of Travelers Protective Association, R.S.V.P., Birthright of Burlington. He served in many civic, church and charitable organizations and fund-raising drives. Included were the Burlington Area Catholic Schools, St. Patrick’s Church, Chamber of Commerce, Burlington Area United Way, Inc., the Big Brother – Big Sister Program, the Lion’s Club, the Knights of Columbus Black Knights volunteer pallbearers and Birthright. His hobbies include wood working, playing tennis, ping pong, and doing yard work.

Survivors include his wife Margaret “Peg”; one son, Daniel C. (Kathy) Geren of Burlington; one daughter, Susan M. (Stephen) Brockway of Burlington; five grandchildren; two great granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, Dale, and one sister, Helen L. Petersen.

Friends may call after noon Tuesday at the Hass Funeral Home where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary recited at 6:00 PM. after which the family will receive friends until 8:00 PM. The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Geren will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington with Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel as celebrant and Rev. Father Dennis Martin and Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as Concelebrants. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard, VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Hamilton Walters Marine Corp League. Memorials have been established for St. Vincent de Paul Society, Burlington Noon Lion’s Club, and Burlington Notre Dame Schools Inc., and Home Caring Services.

Walter E. Landess, 68, of Burlington, died at 2:09 AM, Sunday, July 18, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 18, 1936 in Burlington he was the son of Jesse John and Velma Evelyn Beaman Landess. He married Janis Yvonne Schafer on May 10, 1958 in Burlington.

Mr. Landess worked at West Burlington railroad shops, construction, and Hope Haven. He was a 1955 graduate of Yakima High School in Yakima, WA. He attended First Christian Church. He was an avid bowler, outdoorsman, Iowa Hawkeye’s fan, and Southeastern Community College Blackhawk’s fan.

Survivors include two sons, Joe D. Landess of Mt. Pleasant and Gregory A. Landess of Mediapolis; one daughter, Kathryn R. Varnado of Bay St. Louis, MS; four grandchildren; two brothers, John “Jack” Landess of Omaha, NE, Joe Landess of Texas; three sisters, Evelyn Stevenson of MO, Polly Burton of TN, Vannie Koopman of North Liberty; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Friends may call after noon Wednesday, July 21, at the Hass Funeral Home until 7:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Thursday. The Funeral Service for Mr. Landess will be 10:00 AM Thursday, July 22, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with the Reverend David A. Nash officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established.

Mildred Hazel Swanson

Mildred Hazel Swanson, 86, of West Burlington, died at 11:22 AM, Sunday, July 25, 2004 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

Born July 5, 1918 in Burlington she was the daughter of Frank and Hazel Nellie Johnson Sommerfeld. On November 26, 1938 she married Herbert John Swanson in Kahoka, MO. He died April 9, 1979.

Mrs. Swanson worked at National Research and later was a clerk at Younkers. She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess and on several committees. She loved her family, crocheting, knitting and quilting.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Swanson of Rio Rancho, NM and Don (Judy) Swanson of Columbia, MO; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Sommerfeld of Mt. Pleasant, Roy Sommerfeld of Burlington; two sisters, Dorothy Lindoff of Burlington, Lucille Allender of Rapid City, SD; a special sister-in-law Jane Sommerfeld of Burlington and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert, and one great grandchild.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Wednesday, July 28, at the Hass Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 PM. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Swanson will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 28, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Aicardi Syndrome Foundation.

Austin James Miller

Austin James Miller, son of Krystal Dawn Dickenson and Joseph Theodore Miller was stillborn at 9:00 AM, Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

Survivors include his parents, three brothers, Joshua Miller, Trent Miller and Tyler Dickenson all at home; maternal grandmother, Sherry Neff of Burlington, maternal grandfather, Daniel Dickenson of Keokuk; maternal great grandparents, Douglas and Beverly Dickenson of Burlington; paternal grandmother, Doris Ihm of Iowa City; paternal grandfather, Theodore Miller of West Branch; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal great grandparents.

The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Austin James Miller will be 1:00 PM, Monday, August 2, 2004 at the Aspen Grove Cemetery with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Jean Louise Fisher

Jean Louise Fisher, 61, of Burlington, died at 2:45 PM, Thursday, August 5, 2004, at the Burlington Care Center.

Born May 2, 1943 in Joplin, MO, she was the daughter of Thomas R. and Jewell Bay Trimble. She married Carl Fisher on May 19, 1963 in Joplin, MO.

Mrs. Fisher was a floral designer, most recently she worked at Hy-Vee Floral Shoppe in Burlington. She was a 1961 graduate of Hutchison High School in Hutchison, KS. She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, making crafts, sewing and traveling.

Survivors include her husband Carl; two sons, Steve Fisher of Mt. Pleasant and Troy Fisher of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; three brothers, Lonny Trimble of Escondido, CA, Tommy Trimble of Burlington, and Don Trimble of Joplin, MO; five sisters, Roberta Ferguson of Carthage, MO, Sue Horine of Carl Junction, MO, Dorothy Easley of Winterhaven, FL, Rosemary Bond of Riverton, KS, Debbie McCarthy of Clearwater, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Fisher has donated her body to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, MN. The Memorial Service for Mrs. Fisher will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at the Oak Street Baptist Church with the Reverend Jason Unzicker officiating. As a body donor, the Fisher family would like to acknowledge that Jean gave the most precious gift anyone could give, the gift to save and improve the lives of her fellow man.

Christopher Allen Simmons

Christopher Allen Simmons, 33, of Burlington, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died at 3:09 AM Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 6, 1971, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Kieth R. and J. Catherine Curtis Simmons.

Mr. Simmons worked in construction most of his life, most recently working for Preferred Construction of Burlington. He was a member of Genesis Fellowship Church in Burlington. He enjoyed music, art, writing, and he especially loved bible study.

Survivors include his father, Kieth Simmons and stepmother Jerreldene Simmons of Van Horne, IA; mother, J. Catherine Simmons of Cedar Rapids, IA; paternal grandmother, Edyth Simmons of Marion, IA; two brothers, Ted Simmons of Norway, IA and Scott Unkrich of Van Horne, IA; two sisters, Diana Simmons of Marion, IA and Kimala Unkrich of Cedar Rapids; one nephew; one niece; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, maternal grandparents, two aunts and three uncles.

Mr. Simmons has been cremated, as per his request. The Memorial Service for Mr. Simmons will be 1:00 PM Thursday, August 19, 2004 at River of Life Ministries in Cedar Rapids with Pastor Steve Irwin officiating. A memorial has been established.
