Veda M. King

The funeral services for Veda Maxine King, 70, of Rogers, Arkansas, who died Friday, December 3, 2004, are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Donald F. Thomas

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Donald F. Thomas, 70, who died Monday, November 29, 2004, will be today at 10:00 AM in St. Paul's Catholic Church of Burlington. The Rev. Msgr. John Hyland will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery , Fort Madison, IA. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. A memorial for Burlington Area Catholic Schools or a charity of the donor's choice has been established.

James Scott

James H. Scott, 85, 44 Cindy Drive, Fort Madison, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Fort Madison Health Center.

Born April 16, 1917, in Adel, he was the son of Dr. Walter E. and Mabel C. Conliff Scott. On July 4, 1942, he married Elizabeth F. McGivern in Des Moines. She died June 3, 1970.

Mr. Scott owned and operated the former Western Auto Store for 35 years, retiring in 1973. He also worked for the former Stoyer Motors for six years.

He was a World War II Army Corps veteran. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include one daughter, Diane Scott of Burlington; two sons, Thomas M. Scott of Wever and James H. Scott of Fort Madison; seven grandchildren; and four great–grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Tuesday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Scott will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gordon Lundberg officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

James Ryner

James E. Ryner, 79, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Community Medical Center in Monmouth.

Born Jan. 30, 1924, in Des Moines, he was the son of James and Clara Ranney Ryner. On Aug. 24, 1944, he married Betty M. Caldwell in Alexis, Ill.

He attended Coldbrook Rural Schools and Monmouth and Alexis high schools, graduating from Alexis High School.

Mr. Ryner farmed in the area, then worked for Farmall Implement in Rock Island, Ill. He operated Maple City Delivery Service in 1955. He then worked for Butler Manufacturing and Midwest Manufacturing, before working as a mechanic for Neff Implement in Monmouth. He then went to work for the Monmouth Hospital, retiring from Community Memorial Hospital in 1985.

He enjoyed hunting, camping and reading.

Survivors include his wife, five sons, Frank L. Ryner, of Rock Island, Richard E. Ryner, Larry W. Ryner, and David J. Ryner, all of Monmouth, Donald P. Ryner of Dallas; one sister, Virginia Kilgore of Galesburg, Ill.; two brothers, Charles Ryner of Alexis, Dean Ryner of Little Rock, Ark.; 16 grandchildren; one great–grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter and two sisters.

Visitation will be Monday at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, where the family will receive friends between 6 and 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Ryner will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Suzanne Geer officiating. Interment will be in the Alexis Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Warren County Cancer Fund.

James J. Kaltefleiter

James J. Kaltefleiter, 74, of Amarillo, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004.

A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Amarillo, with Monsignor Joseph Tash officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Street. Visitation at the funeral home is available today from noon to 7 p.m.

Mr. Kaltefleiter was born March 16, 1930, in West Point, Iowa, to George and Helen Kaltefleiter. He graduated from St. Mary's School of West Point. A true patriot, he was a veteran of the Korean War as a member of the United States Navy. He married Mary Kay Snaadt at West Point in 1962. The couple moved to Amarillo in 1978. Mr. Kaltefleiter worked for the U.S. Department of Energy for 33 years before retiring from the Pantex Plant in 1995.

He was a founding member of St. Thomas and was a member of the following organizations: the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1475; the 40 & 8; the Knights of Columbus; the Elks (B.P.O.E.) and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Following retirement, Mr. Kaltefleiter spent countless hours volunteering at the Veterans Hospital in Amarillo. Auto racing, vintage cars and pheasant hunting were some of his interests. He was preceded in death by a son, Chris, in 2001, three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Caroline Ponirakis and husband Dimitri and grandchildren Julian and Amelia, of Cortland, N.Y.; a son, John Kaltefleiter and wife Shanna, of Athens, Ga.; a sister, Lucille Samms of Prattville, Ala.; a brother, Carl Kaltefleiter of West Point and many nieces and nephews.

He will be buried at Calvary Cemetery in West Point at a later date.

The family suggests memorials be to the American Heart Association.

Helen Grinstead

Helen May Grinstead, 82, of New London Nursing and Rehab Center in New London, formerly of Burlington, died at 4:55 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born March 28, 1923, in Lowell, she was the daughter of Roscoe and Ida Zachmeyer Watson. She married Raymond D. Grinstead.

Ms. Grinstead worked in data processing for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and J.I. Case Co. She retired from J.I. Case in 1987 after 14 years of service.

She was a 1941 graduate of Danville High School. She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641 and was a past president of AARP and JFWC.

Survivors three sons, Keith Grinstead of Quincy, Ill., John Grinstead of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gary Grinstead of Fort Madison; three daughters, Peggy Jenkins and Lorna Hempen, both of Las Vegas, and Sandra Anderson of Indianapolis, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, two grandsons, one sister and three brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with family meeting friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Grinstead will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Jackie Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Danville.

A memorial has been established for the Diabetes Association.

Dora Sloan

Dora Saner Sloan, 69, of New London, formerly of the Eldon area, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Feb. 27, 1937, in Albia, she was the daughter of Jack and Dorothy Herbert Saner. On July 22, 1956, she married Harold Sloan in Ottumwa. He died July 11, 1996.

Mrs. Sloan moved to New London in 1966 and worked 33 years at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. She retired in 2000.

She was raised in Albia and was a 1956 graduate of Eldon High School.

Survivors include one son, Stanley Sloan of Wayland; one daughter, Cheryl Sloan of Burlington; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Iscel Fisk of Eldon, Arlene Bonner of Esterville and Shirley DePue of Ottumwa.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon, with family meeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Sloan will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kremer Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Albert officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery near Floris.

A memorial has been established.

Dwain Lundeen

L. Dwain "Duke" Lundeen, 76, of Burlington, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at his home.

Born Sept. 11, 1928, in Burlington, he was the son of Leonard and Erma Mehaffy Lundeen and was raised in Mediapolis. He was previously married to Joyce Woodward on Feb. 10, 1951, in Burlington.

Mr. Lundeen was a tool and die maker and a state of Iowa OSHA inspector, working out of the Des Moines office, for over 20 years.

He was a graduate of Mediapolis High School and tool and die trade school in Chicago. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge and Fraternal Order of Eagles of Burlington, and a former member of Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed boating, water skiing and motorcycling, and he was an excellent pool player.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (George) Ricks of Eolia, MO and Tina (Dan) Carson of Burlington; five grandchildren, Heidi and Tyler Ricks, and Casey, Caleb and Andrew Smith; one sister, Joyce (Frank) Reciniello of Belleville, N.J., several nieces, and friend, Marlene Wyatt of Burlington.

His parents and brother, Dale Lundeen, preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service for Mr. Lundeen will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Donald Hoornstra officiating. Following the funeral service, the body of Mr. Lundeen will be cremated.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Duke's life at the Moose Lodge following his funeral service.

A memorial has been established to Great River Hospice.

Florence Olson

Florence Lucille Olson, 89, of Fort Madison, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Fort Madison Health Center.

Born Feb. 20, 1915, in Wever, she was the daughter of Eldon R. and Sarah E. Graham Chesnut. On Oct. 30, 1933, she married A. Eugene Olson in Burlington. He died July 1, 1977.

Mrs. Olson was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Ladies Circle of the church.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Riedl of Fort Madison; one granddaughter; three sisters, Esther Beach and Mary Olson, both of West Point, and Betty Peek of Ottumwa; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son and four brothers.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

The memorial service for Mrs. Olson will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gordon Lundberg officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in rural Fort Madison.

Kathryn Thoma

Kathryn A. Thoma, 87, of Wayland, died Saturday morning, Oct. 16, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 9, 1917, in Tipton, Mo., she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Schreck Wolf. On Aug. 29, 1943, she married William "Bill" Thoma in Kansas City, Mo. He died Jan. 24, 1985.

Mrs. Thoma owned and co–operated South Side Café in Wayland for 21 years. She also cooked at WACO Schools for 13 years before retiring.

She enjoyed playing cards with friends and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Groff of Wayland and Pat Hession of Iowa City; three grandchildren; and one brother, Stanley Wolf.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Thoma will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with the Rev. Ed O'Melia officiating. Burial will be in North Hill Cemetery near Wayland.

Memorials have been established for St. James Catholic Church and American Cancer Society.
