Joseph Newman

Joseph R. Newman, 76, of Dallas City, Ill., died of natural causes at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at his home.

Born January 21, 1928, in Blandinsville, Ill., he was the son of Carl A. and Grace Baughman Newman. On Sept. 7, 1948, he married Donna Wilcox in Carthage, Ill.

Mr. Newman was carpenter. He also worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 15 years.

He was a Dallas City Civil Defense charter member and a member of Grace Bible Church in Dallas City. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Carl A. Newman and Ronald J. Newman, both of Dallas City, and Charles D. Newman and Kris M. Newman, both of Fort Madison; 10 grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; and two sisters, Marie Smessaert of Aledo, Ill., and Elizabeth Olson of Quincy, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one granddaughter.

The graveside service with full military rites for Mr. Newman will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Harris Cemetery near Dallas City.

Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.

Printy Funeral Home in Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Mower

Paul Francis Mower, 90, of Burlington died at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 2, 1913, in Burlington, he was the son of Edward and Alice Wagner Mower. On Nov. 21, 1936, he married Dorothy von Ende in Burlington.

Mr. Mower was a mechanic with the Burlington Fire Department.

He was of the Protestant faith and a member of Cascade Boat Club.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Steve Mower of Germantown, Tenn.; two grandchildren; one great–grandson; one brother, Ralph "Bud" Mower of Burlington; one sister, Helen White of Burlington; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Mower will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Frances Caslavka

Frances J. Caslavka, 83, of Fort Madison, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at West Point Care Center in West Point.

Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Cedar Township, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Nichting Pieper. On Oct. 2, 1943, she married Mark E. Scott in San Diego, Calif. He died on Nov. 6, 1969. On Sept. 20, 1978, she married Milvoy Caslvka in West Point, and he died on May 16, 1987.

Mrs. Caslavka was a homemaker.

She was a member of Ss. Mary and Joseph Church and Catholic Ladies Auxiliary.

Suvivors include three sons, Paul (Judi) Scott of West Point, Lee Scott of West Des Moines and Pat (Mary Ilmberger) Scott of Fort Madison; four daughters, Alicia "Lee" Meller and Helen (Mike) Johnson, both of Fort Madison, Janice (Tom) Winnike of Santa Fe, Texas, and Carol (Mike) Heitz of Naples, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren and two sisters, Lucille Merschman of St. Paul and Ruth Holtkamp of Hillsboro.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, two nieces and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a wake service will be at 7 p.m. at King–Lynk Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Caslavka will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ss. Mary and Joseph Church in Fort Madison, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Aquinas High School or Marquette High School. Contributions may be left at King–Lynk Funeral Home or at Ss. Mary and Joseph Church the day of the service.

Harold Garmoe

Harold W. Garmoe, 81, of Burlington, died at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Dec. 10, 1922, in Henry County, he was the son of Lloyd and Velma Samuelson Garmoe. On July 10, 1942, he married Barbara Deloris Cochran in Kahoka, Mo. She died June 13, 2004.

Mr. Garmoe worked in quality control for J.I. Case for 40 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a 1940 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He was of the Protestant faith. He was an officer of Moose Lodge No. 579 for 12 years and a member of the Eagles Aerie No. 150. He enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and the Ozarks.

Survivors include two sons, Ronnie Garmoe of Mount Pleasant and Larry Garmoe of Tayloridge, Ill.; two daughters, Sandra Christner of Mount Pleasant and Shirley Stewart of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; 14 great–grandchildren; one brother, Donald Garmoe of Mount Pleasant; and one sister, Virginia Elmore of Seward, Neb.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son and two grandsons.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with Moose rites at 6:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Garmoe will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for New London Nursing and Rehab and Great River Hospice.

Kyle Dahring

Kyle Jacob Dahring was stillborn at 6:24 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, Ill.

He was the son of James Allan and Misty Renna Brown Dahring.

Survivors include his parents of Machesney Park, Ill.; one sister, Brianna Renna Dahring of Machesney Park; grandparents, Marjorie Dahring of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Renna Rinker and John Hawkinson, both of Burlington, and Randal and Cele Brown of Diamond, Ill.; great–grandmother, Lois Brown of Morris, Ill., and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Aspen Grove Cemetery , with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Dean Henshaw

Dean G. Henshaw, 74, of West Des Moines, formerly of Fort Madison, died at 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Born July 4, 1928, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Don and Daisy Mitchell Henshaw. He married Lavanda M. Adkisson on Oct. 12, 1946, in Fort Madison.

Mr. Henshaw served in the U.S. Navy Seabees Construction Battalion and was a retired office manager for Pinkerton Security, with 20 years of service.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, J.D. Henshaw of Wever; one daughter, Sherry Smitley of West Des Moines; five grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren; one brother, Dave Henshaw of Charleston, Ore.; one sister, Jeanne Witeck of Richland, Wash.; and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a brother and an infant son.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Henshaw will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rob Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for his church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Gladys Callaway

Gladys June Callaway, 88, of Burlington Care Center, formerly of Burlington and Hillsboro, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 12, 1914, in Pleasant Grove, she was the daughter of James Preston and Birdie Marie Jacoba Stucker. On Oct. 21, 1933, she married William Joseph Callaway in Danville.

Mrs. Callaway was a homemaker.

She was a 1932 graduate of Danville High School. She was a member of Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Pleasant Grove and the Hillsboro Alpha Club. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include two daughters, Juawona Weiss of Burlington and O'Kemm Dixon of Carman, Ill.; two sons, Michael Callaway of Anchorage, Alaska, and Patrick Callaway of Stockport; 10 grandchildren; 11 great–grandchildren; and three sisters, Grace Mathews of Danville and Hazel Lord and Joy White, both of Burlington.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by parents, a baby daughter, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Callaway will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Rose officiating. Burial will be in Shinar Cumberland Cemetery of Pleasant Grove, rural New London.

A memorial has been established for Shinar Cumberland Cemetery of Pleasant Grove.

Dorothy Mearion

Dorothy E. Mearion, 97, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Keokuk, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at the Fairland Adventist Nursing & Rehab Center in Silver Springs, Md.

Born March 6, 1906, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of John W. and Lulu McElroy Mearion.

Miss Mearion was employed at the Office of the Treasurer in Washington, until retiring in 1972. She had lived in Keokuk until moving to Washington in 1941. She was a member of the Trinity AME Zion Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and cousins.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk with the Rev. Ronnie Braggs officiating.

Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk is in charge of the arrangements.

John Wolfe

John Henry Wolfe, 82, of Park Place LTCU in Mount Pleasant, formerly of Germanville, rural Brighton, died at 4:20 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Jan. 3, 1922, in Germanville, he was the son of Henry and Hattie Florence Kientz Wolfe. On June 24, 1945, he married Lucile Ruth Stortz Germanville.

Mr. Wolfe was a longtime Germanville farmer, working on the family farm. He retired and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1999.

He attended a country school in the area. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and a former member of the church's Lutheran Brotherhood and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed touring Midwest Old Threshers.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Bonnie Kaufman of Fairfield and Joan and Nancy Wolfe, both of Mount Pleasant; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Wolfe will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hope Lutheran Church, 1465 Walnut Ave., rural Brighton, with the Revs. Wayne Wilken and Marvin Robeck officiating. Burial will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Hope Lutheran Church.
