Joseph Helling

Joseph R. Helling, 85, of Fort Madison, died at 3:18 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Arrangements are pending at King Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

Harold W. Garmoe

The funeral service for Mr. Harold W. Garmoe, 81, who died Monday, October 4, 2004, will be Friday, October 8th, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Randall Gearhart will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM with Moose Rites at 6:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for New London Nursing and Rehab and Great River Hospice.

HAROLD V. "CORKY" WUNNENBERG

Memorial Services for Mr. Harold V. "Corky" Wunnenberg, 81, of Stronghurst, Illinois, will be held in Prugh's Chapel this morning at 10:30 A.M. Rev. Dr. Gary Chapman will officiate. Inurnment with full graveside military honors provided by the honor guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29 will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.

KYLE JACOB DAHRING

Graveside Committal Services for Kyle Jacob Dahring will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery this afternoon at 2:00 P.M. Rev. JudyAnn Morse will officiate. A memorial has been established in memory of Kyle Jacob Dahring. Those wishing to attend the services are requested to meet at the Sunnyside Avenue entrance to the cemetery at 1:45 P.M.

Phila E. Dochterman

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Phila Ellen Dochterman, age 88, who passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003, will be 10:30 AM this morning at the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Tim Vaughan, Vernon Spinner, Anita Forsberg and Leah Beyer officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . A memorial has been established. Condolences can be e–mailed to the family by visiting Mrs. Dochterman's obituary at www.hassfh.com.

Adian Lee Westerbeck

The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Adian Lee Westerbeck, who passed away shortly after birth Sunday, September 28, 2003, will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 30, at Aspen Grove Cemetery Baby Land with the Rev. Hass Funeral Home

Linda Logan

Linda Marie Logan, 60, of Timberlake, N.C., formerly of Biggsville, Ill., died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Born July 15, 1943, in Monmouth, Ill., she was the daughter of William Boyd and Verna Millen Stevenson.

Ms. Logan was a contractor/consultant for the Journal of Marketing & Research in Durham.

She was raised in Biggsville and attended local schools. She then attended and graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She loved art and was a potter and artist.

Survivors include three sons, Jeff Logan of Urbandale, Bruce Logan of Norwalk and Matthew Logan of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; one brother, Gary Stevenson of Biggsville; and one sister, Diane Graber of Woodford, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Monday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Biggsville, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A graveside service for Ms. Logan will be at 1 p.m. Monday in South Henderson Cemetery , with the Rev. Richard Johnson officiating.

A memorial has been established.

Gertrude Duncan

Gertrude M. Duncan, 93, of Kahoka, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka.

Born March 16, 1911, in Clark County, Mo., she was the daughter of C.W. and Alice Walker Beard. She first married Carroll Jones. On Sept. 8, 1940, she married Marion M. Duncan in Kahoka. He died Feb. 21, 2004.

Mrs. Duncan became an agent for MFA, now Shelter Insurance, in 1946, and she and her husband ran the agency until retiring Dec. 31, 1974.

She was a 1929 graduate of Wyaconda High School and attended nursing school at Graham Hospital in Keokuk. In 1956, she was named "Woman of the Year" by the former Business and Professional Women's organization. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka and the former Willing Workers Sunday school class. She enjoyed crocheting.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Oelschlaeger of Rock Island, Ill.; two stepsons whom she raised, Joe Duncan of Columbia, Mo., and John Duncan of Ballwin, Mo.; 14 grandchildren and 16 great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two stepsons, one granddaughter, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Duncan will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Kahoka Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka or the donor's choice.

Howard Hoelzen Sr.

Howard Arthur Hoelzen Sr., 85, of Gladstone, Ill., died at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at his home.

Born April 3, 1919, in Burlington, he was the son of Arthur and Emma Lohman Hoelzen. On May 1, 1942, he married Ruth Davis in St. Louis.

Mr. Hoelzen was an inspector at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for 37 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a 1937 graduate of Burlington High School. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the NRA and an avid hunter, especially of ducks. He loved to fish and spend time on the river. He also supported three children through World Vision since 1977.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Howard A. Hoelzen Jr. of Gladstone and Walter Hoelzen of Carman, Ill.; one daughter, Linda Lundy of Riverside; eight grandchildren; several great–grandchildren; and one sister, Sherry Mayo of Canyon Country, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to the time of service Saturday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of service.

The funeral for Mr. Hoelzen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with Dan Dingus officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Salvation Army.

Leona Hart

Leona M. Hart, 95, of Lomax, Ill., died at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Ill.

Born March 12, 1909, in Yates City, Ill., she was the daughter of Elvin and Maude England Thurman. On Dec. 3, 1936, she married John E. Hart in Toulon, Ill. He died March 28, 2004.

Mrs. Hart moved to Lomax in 1938, where she lived until moving to LaHarpe–Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe, Ill., on Feb. 27, 2004. She enjoyed crocheting.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean McGee of LaHarpe and Eileen Logan of Lomax; two sons, Jim Hart of Lomax and John Hart Jr. of Oquawka, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, one granddaughter and her parents.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A graveside service for Mrs. Hart will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Carman Cemetery , Carman, Ill., with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating.

Memorials have been established for LaHarpe–Davier Health Care Center and LaHarpe Ambulance Service.

Mae Register

Mae Register, 85, of Mount Pleasant died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born April 3, 1919, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Guy and Alice Blanche Doan Simkin. On Dec. 31,1941, she married Carl Register in Mount Pleasant. He preceded her in death on June 30,1994.

Mrs. Register worked for A&P Co. before her marriage. After marriage, she stayed home to raise her family. When she returned to work, she worked for Shaffer Pen and then as a clerk at J.C. Penney until her retirement in 1981.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and Oakland Mills Community Church. She was educated in rural schools and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1938. She was a member of Oakland Mills Ladies Aid, Eunice Circle, RSVP of Mount Pleasant and Henry County Health Center Auxiliary. She was a 50–year member of Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine, TTT Chapter A, American Legion Auxiliary, Pinochle Club and Nimble Thimble Club. She enjoyed volunteering.

Survivors include three daughters, Doris Wellington of Mount Pleasant, Jean Smoot of Dodge City, Kan., and Janet Mannen of Mansfield, Texas; one brother, Ed Simkin of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; and three–great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Register will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Oakland Mills Ladies' Aid and Henry County Health Center Auxiliary.

James Rettig

James R. Rettig, 66, of LaHarpe, Ill., formerly of Dallas City, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at LaHarpe–Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe.

Born July 20, 1938, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of James and Della Logan Rettig.

Mr. Rettig worked as a Millwright for Carpenters Union.

He attended Dallas City schools and served in the Army. He was a member of LaHarpe Masonic Lodge and the Shrine.

Survivors include on daughter, Rhonda Walkosz of Gilbert, Ariz.; two sons, Roderic Rettig of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Josh Rettig of Clearlake; three grandchildren; four brothers, Merlin "Pete" Rettig and Wayne Rettig, both of Dallas City, Ralph Rettig of Augusta and Gary Rettig of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

There will be no visitation.

No services are planned. Burial will be in Crane Cemetery near Lomax, Ill. Banks and Beals Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LaVeta Breeden

LaVeta Pearl Breeden, 76, of Keokuk, died at 7:25 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Born June 3, 1928, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of Orville W. and Carrie L. Baker Breeden.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include two brothers, James J. Breeden of Galesburg, Ill. and Donald R. Breeden of Knoxville, Ill.

She was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and one daughter.

There will be no visitation or services.

Cremation and burial will be at a later date in Bluff Springs Cemetery in rural Canton, Mo.

DeJong's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
