Donna S. Rush

The funeral service for Mrs. Donna Suzanne Rush, 70, who died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, will be Thursday, April 14th, at 10:00 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Brad Cranston will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. A memorial has been established for Heritage Baptist Church.

Katherine Masters

Katherine "Katie" R. Masters, 77, of Burlington died at 4:42 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 21, 1927, in Rock Island, Ill., she was the daughter of Alfred Lawrence and Nellie Faye Hand Shofe. On July 23, 1949, she married Richard Dee "Dick" Masters Sr. in Burlington. He died April 1, 2005.

Mrs. Masters worked in the Des Moines County Treasurer's Office for 42 years and was Des Moines County Treasurer for 14 years, retiring in 1990.

She was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School. She previously attended Asbury United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Iowa State County Treasurers Association, Iowa State Association of Counties and Antique Automobile Club of America, where she also was a national judge.

Survivors include one son, Richard D. Masters Jr. of Burlington; two grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Hoffman of Burlington; one brother, Richard "Dick" Shofe of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Masters will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Donald Hoornstra officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Charles Vogelgesang

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Charles F. "Sam" Vogelgesang, 86, will be 10:00 AM this morning at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Veterans Honor Guard, VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29. A memorial has been established.

John Garnant

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. John Kervyn Garnant, 87, will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 25, at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father Gerald E. Stouvenel as the celebrant and Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the concelebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Veterans Honor Guard, VFW Posts 10102, 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29. Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Sunday, April 24, at the Hass–Thielen Funeral Home with a Rosary recited at 6:00 PM after which the family will receive friends until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established for St. Vincent DePaul Society and his church.

Flossie A. Burkhiser Lair

The graveside funeral service and interment for Mrs. Flossie A. Burkhiser Lair, 93, will be Friday, April 29th, at 2:00 PM in Kossuth Cemetery , rural Mediapolis. The Rev. Kenneth Smith will officiate. Friends may call from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 28th, in Lunning Chapel. The family will not be present. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Ervin L. Marti

The funeral service for Mr. Ervin Leo Marti, 67, who died Monday, April 25, 2005, will be Friday, April 29th, at 10:30 AM in Oakville Apostolic Christian Church, Oakville. Ministers of the Church will officiate. Interment will be in Oakville Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery , Oakville. Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Thursday, April 28th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. Memorials have been established for Oakville Apostolic Christian Church, Young House Family Services and Hope Haven.

Elsie Maass

The funeral service for Mrs. Elsie Maass, 101, who died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, will be Friday, April 29th, at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Jason Unzicker will officiate. Entombment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Friday, April 29th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service. A memorial has been established for New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Leonard Young

Leonard Young, 80, of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007.

Born May 28, 1926, in Henry County, he was the son of William and Blanche Scott Young. On June 18, 1950, he married Janet Rose Hart.

Mr. Young was a mechanic at the Mount Pleasant Ford and Chevy garages. He also worked in the Henry County Health Center maintenance department. He was a carpenter, electrician, and radio and television repairman at Young's Radio Shop. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1944. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a deacon at Oakland Mills Community Church and a former volunteer on the Mount Pleasant Fire Department. He enjoyed wood working and recently made more than 90 rolling pins. He loved working with his hands and could fix anything.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Ramona Tracy of Overland Park, Kan., Melody Dingus of Hemet, Calif., and Tammy Larson and Valerie Farr, both of Mount Pleasant; six grandchildren; five step–grandchildren; one great–granddaughter; and one sister, Louise Woolley of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, five half brothers, one half sister and one step–grandson.

Visitation will be noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel, with family receiving friends from 2 to 5 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Young will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Daryl Jessup officiating. Burial with military rites by Henry County Honor Guard will be in Oakland Mills Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Oakland Mills Community Church and Oakland Mills Cemetery.

MR. KIM R. DAVIS

Funeral Services for Mr. Kim R. Davis, 48, who died Friday, April 26, 2002, at his home will be held in Prugh's Chapel on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at 10:30 A.M. Rev. Carl Engstrom will officiate. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. Friends may call after 8:00 A.M. on Tuesday. A memorial has been established for his children's education. Following the service, Mr. Davis will be cremated.

Rosella Thomas

Rosella Eileen Payne Thomas, 75, of rural West Point died Monday, May 7, 2007, at her home.

Born May 16, 1931, in rural Fort Madison, she was the daughter of John D. and Addie B. Seager Sherwood. On Dec. 18, 1954, she married Edward H. Payne in Dallas City, Ill. He died Sept. 18, 1966. On July 5, 1969, she married Donald Thomas. He died in 1995.

Mrs. Thomas was a homeamker and helped with farming.

She was a member of Denmark Senior Citizens. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and baking.

Survivors include four daughters, Naomi Payne Wileman of Washington, Ill., Connie Payne Lemon of Boone, Wanda Payne Schelby of Fort Madison, and Yvonne Payne Jackson of Montrose; one son, Edward H. Payne II of Denmark; 13 grandchildren; 18 great–grandchildren; one brother, John H. Sherwood of Burlington; three sisters, Amanda Moore of Donnellson, Grace Andrews of Peoria, Ill., and Eva Stansbury of Boone; numerous nieces and nephews; great–nieces and great–nephews; and great–great–nieces and great–great–nephews.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and four brothers.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Thomas will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Soldier's Circle, Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established.

Marjorie E. High

The funeral service for Mrs. Marjorie E. High, 79, who died Sunday, May 30, 2004, will be Saturday, June 5th, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Dennis Tevis will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Friday, June 4th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.

Jennie E. Masengarb

The funeral service for Mrs. Jennie Elizabeth Masengarb, 95, who died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, will be Friday, June 4th, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Don Rehling will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after noon on Thursday, June 3rd, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. A memorial has been established for the King's Daughters Home.

Helen Hallowell

Helen "Teach" Hallowell, 92, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at her residence. Funeral arrangements are pending at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

Pauline Stapp

Pauline Ellen Stapp, 79, of Columbus Junction, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born July 19, 1924, in Sperry, she was the daughter of Elmer and Emeline D. Jamison Aspelmeier. On May 24, 1943, she married Donald Lewis Stapp in Washington.

Mrs. Stapp was a homemaker.

She enjoyed fishing and playing cards. She was a volunteer at Colonial Manor Care Center in Columbus Junction and was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include four daughters, Lois Lee of Cornelia, Ga., Linda Lord of Ainsworth, Connie Cronbaugh of Marengo and Donna Holskey of Valdosta, Ga.; one son, Gary Stapp of Grandview; 14 grandchildren; 9 great–grandchildren; one brother, Walter Aspelmeier of East Moline, Ill.; and two sisters, Frances Smith of Troy, Ill., and Carol Jean Skains of Houston.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Stapp was preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and one grandson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Stacy–Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction.

The funeral for Mrs. Stapp will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Stacy–Lewis Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Hilda Baker

Hilda Mae Baker, 67, of Burlington, died at 4:32 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center.

Born June 8, 1937, in Moulton, she was the daughter of Homer and Grace Fincher. On Dec. 5, 1957, she married Maurice "Jack" Baker in Moulton. They later divorced.

Mrs. Baker was a homemaker.

She enjoyed watching soap operas, crocheting, needlepoint and cross stitching.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah M. Krieger and Juanita J. Baker, both of Burlington; five sons, Morris J. Baker, Michael W. Baker, Douglas L. Baker and Gary D. Baker, all of Burlington, and Kenneth R. Baker of Fort Madison; eight grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; and three brothers, James Fincher, Robert Fincher and Rodney Fincher, all of Moulton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one nephew.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon. Following visitation, her body will be cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Imogene Holecek

Imogene S. Holecek, 97, of Keokuk, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her daughter's home in Keokuk.

Born Jan. 19, 1907, in Warsaw, Ill., she was the daughter of VanBuren and Amanda Woods Knight. She married Virgil Symmonds on Jan. 30, 1923, in Keokuk. She later married Joseph Holecek on March 10, 1973, in Keokuk. He died on Oct. 22, 1999.

Mrs. Holecek worked 27 years at Baker's Rexall in Keokuk.

She was a member of the Anchor of Hope Fellowship Church (formerly the Pentecostal Christian Fellowship). At 90, when her husband was a resident at the Keokuk Convalescent Center, she was volunteer of the year at at the center. The most important thing in her life was her family.

Survivors include five daughters, Laura Stoneking of Burlington, Hazel Huffman and Julie Greer, both of Keokuk, Mary Kratzer of Phoenix, Arix., and Ruth Evanchai of Denton, Texas; one son, William Symmonds of Fort Madison; 36 grandchildren; 73 great–grandchildren; and 38 great–great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, four sisters, three grandsons and one great–grandson.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Holecek will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Anchor of Hope Fellowship Church in Keokuk, with the Revs. John Varner and John Curtis officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, Ill.

A memorial has been established for her church.
