William Shearer

William "Bill" Dailor Shearer, 86, of Columbus Junction, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Washington County Hospital in Washington.

Born June 11, 1917, in Columbus Junction, he was the son of Brainard "B.H." and Maude Sarah Hanft Shearer.

Mr. Shearer worked for First National Bank in Tulsa, Okla., for 20 years before returning to the Columbus Junction area to take over as the editor of the Columbus Gazette Newspaper.

He was a 1936 graduate of Columbus Junction High School and attended the University of Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan College. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the South Pacific area. He was a member of Columbus Junction United Methodist Church and the American Legion and was a 50–year member of the Masonic Lodge in Tulsa.

Survivors include one brother, Woodrow Shearer of Columbus Junction; three nephews; two nieces and one sister–in–law.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

There will be no visitation.

The funeral for Mr. Shearer will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Stacy–Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction, with the Rev. Cathy Whitlatch officiating. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery . Refreshments for family and friends will follow at Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

A memorial has been established for Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.

Lane R. "Tiger" Peterson

The memorial funeral service for Mr. Lane Robert "Tiger" Peterson, 38, who died Monday, July 26, 2004, will be Tuesday, August 3rd, at 1:00 PM in West Burlington Christian Church. The Rev. John Griffith will officiate. Friends may call after noon today, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. According to his wishes, Mr. Peterson will be cremated following the visitation. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Blaine G. Lowthorp

The funeral service for Mr. Blaine Lowthorp, 58, who died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, will be today at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Randell Gearhart will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8 AM until the time of service. A memorial has been established for his family.

Dale B. Yantis

The funeral service for Mr. Dale Bryant Yantis, 84, who died Thursday, July 29, 2004, will be today, at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Maurice Moore will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League will conduct military rites. Friends may call after 8:00 AM until the time of service. A memorial has been established for Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church.

Marvin McIlmoil

Marvin McIlmoil, 92, of Carthage, Ill., died of natural causes Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage.

Born March 5, 1910, in Bear Creek Township, Ill., he was the son of Matthew and Cora Gano McIlmoil. On June 23, 1934, he married Marguerite Moore.

Mr. McIlmoil was a lifelong farmer, moving to Carthage in 1990 after 44 years on the farm. He also helped Prairie and Rock Creek townships part–time on road maintenance.

He was a member of Elvaston Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the Western Illinois Old Threshers near Hamilton, Ill.

Survivors include his wife; one son, John McIlmoil of Carthage; two daughters, Pat Ellefritz of Ferris, Ill., and Sharon Carter of Fort Madison; nine grandchildren; 17 great–grandchildren; and two great–great–granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one son, three sisters and two great–great–granddaughters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Neiser–Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. McIlmoil will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Neiser–Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, with Robert Tillman officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

A memorial has been established for Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.

SHIRLEY L. HAFNER

Funeral Services for Mrs. Shirley L. Hafner, 83, formerly of Burlington who died on Sunday, August 10, 2003 at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mediapolis, Iowa will be held in Prugh's Chapel on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Betsy Lee will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel one hour prior to the time of service. Friends may call after 1:00 P.M., on Wednesday.

Raymond Pelate

Raymond E. Pelate, 90, of Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Knoxville, Ill., died at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at the nursing home.

Born July 13, 1913, in Fort Charles, Ill., he was the son of Cypian and Lena E. "Lizzie" Doiron Pelate. On Dec. 24, 1937, he married Maude O. McKinney in Palmyra, Mo.

Mr. Pelate began as a boat carpenter and worked on and built boats for St. Genevieve Boat. He was then in construction and was general superintendent for several companies, including Housewright in LaHarpe, Ill., and George A. Fuller Construction on various projects. He supervised construction in various states including Washington, Kentucky, Kansas and in Chicago. He retired in 1979.

At the age of 5, his family moved to St. Genevieve, Mo., where he was raised and educated. He was a member of Oquawka, Ill., Masonic Lodge 123. He enjoyed nature in general, gardening, flowers and doing yard work.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert A. Hoskins of Galesburg, Ill.; one granddaughter; three great–grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Cremation has been accorded. No services are currently being planned for Mr. Pelate.

Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Sloss

Jerry L. Sloss, 59, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 7:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill.

Born Aug. 15, 1944, in Monmouth, he was the son of Emory Floyd and Inez Bollman Sloss. On Feb. 15, 1964, he married Patricia P. Pate in Monmouth.

Mr. Sloss worked at the National Bank of Monmouth for several years. He opened Sloss Bookkeeping in 1980 and operated it until his death. He also served as a volunteer fireman for many years.

He was active in community affairs and enjoyed Warren High School football.

Survivors include his wife of Monmouth; two daughters, Kathy Logsdon of Gerlaw, Ill., and Tara Hanson of Galesburg, Ill.; one son, Brian L. Sloss of Stevens Point, Wis.; three grandchildren; and one sister, Sue Proehazka of Kirkwood, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be Monday and Tuesday at Turnball Funeral Home in Monmouth, where the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The funeral for Mr. Sloss will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Turnball Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lenox Union Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for United School Red Storm.

Mary McDowell

Mary Alice McDowell, 50, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born May 10, 1954, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Iliff Sulvester and Ruby Lavena Harrison Mills. On Jan. 31, 1976, she married Mark McDowell in Des Moines. They later divorced.

Ms. McDowell was a legal secretary in Des Moines, Chicago, Mississippi and several other communities.

She was a graduate of Fairfield High School and IBM Business College. She returned to Mount Pleasant in 2000. She was active in the Baha'i faith.

Survivors include one sister, Sharon Rhum of Mount Pleasant; and one brother, Edwin Leroy Mills of Deming, N.M.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Ms. McDowell will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beatty Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakland Mills Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Oakland Mills Cemetery.

Karen Savage

Karen "Suzy" Burchett Savage, 50, of Nauvoo, Ill., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born Aug. 18, 1953, in Springfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harry and Billie Cornwell Burchett. On May 25, 1975, she married Rick L. Savage in Lamoni.

Mrs. Savage worked at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Ill., Montebello Health Care in Hamilton, Ill., and Hancock County Mental Health Department in Carthage.

She attended Graceland University in Lamoni, where she received her RN BSN. She and her family moved to Nauvoo in May 1976. She was active in the Community of Christ Church, where she held the priesthood office of teacher and served as deacon. She volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and served as district representative. She enjoyed children, sports and was an avid Cubs fan. Her hobbies included crafts, handiwork and scrapbooks.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Paul Savage of Dallas City, Ill., and Ryan and Alan Savage at home; her parents of Artesia, N.M.; five brothers; one sister; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will immediately follow the memorial service at Camp Nauvoo Lodge cafeteria. Cremation rights have been accorded.

The memorial service for Mrs. Savage will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Camp Nauvoo Lodge in Nauvoo, with Lee Ourth officiating.

Lamporte Funeral Home in Nauvoo is in charge of arrangements.

Harold L. Wagner

The funeral service for Mr. Harold Lloyd Wagner, 77, who died Thursday, August 29, 2002, will be Saturday, August 31st at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Charles Stevens will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corps League will conduct military rites. Friends may call after 12:00 PM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. A memorial has been established.

Lawrence M. Selters

The funeral arrangements for Mr. Lawrence Melvin Selters, 69, who died Thursday, August 29, 2002, are pending in Lunning Chapel.

William "Bill" R. Atkins

The funeral service for Mr. William "Bill" R. Atkins, 70, who died Thursday, August 29, 2002, will be Saturday, August 31st at 5:00 PM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery Tuesday, September 3rd at 9:30 AM. The family will receive friends from 3:30 until 4:30 PM on Saturday, August 31st in Lunning Chapel. A memorial has been established for the Kidney Transplant Unit in Iowa City.

Oscar Davis

Oscar Davis of Stronghurst, Ill., died suddenly at 3:18 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst.

Richard Perkins

Richard "Dick" Lyle Perkins, 61, of Burlington, died of cancer at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at his home.

Born Oct. 6, 1942, in Bur–lington, he was the son of Lyle Haskell and Gladys Faye Arnold Perkins. On March 19, 1965, he married Beulah Maye Frakes in Fort Madison.

Mr. Perkins worked in shipping/receiving at J.I. Case Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1999.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mediapolis. He was a member of Patriot Lodge No. 650 AF&AM, Iowa Chapter No. 1 Royal Arch Masons, Zerubbabel Council No. 22 Royal and Select Masters, St. Omer Commandery No. 15 Knights Templar, was grand sentinel of the Grand Commandery Knight Templar of Iowa in 1991, and Burlington Airplane Model Club Association. He was a union steward for UAW Local 807, volunteered at Great River Medical Center and enjoyed boating, fishing and flying model airplanes.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Wanda Faye Perkins of Burlington; one son, Bryan Leo Perkins of West Burlington; four grandchildren; and one brother, Arnold Dean Perkins of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends following Masonic rites at 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The memorial service for Mr. Perkins will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. The body has been cremated.

Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Foundation, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
