Leah Bachman

Leah Eichelberger Bachman, 102, of Tiskilwa, Ill., formerly of Wayland, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Colonial Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Princeton, Ill.

Born Jan. 13, 1902, in Wayland, she was the daughter of John and Josephine Roth Graber. On Jan. 18, 1923, she married Chris E. Eichelberger in Wayland. He died June 27, 1948. On May 22, 1968, she married Edward Bachman in Tiskilwa, Ill. He died Oct. 16, 1980.

Mrs. Bachman operated a Bible bookstore from her home in Wayland. She taught Sunday school and Bible school.

She was raised in Wayland and was a member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. In 1962, she moved to Tiskilwa where she became a member of Willow Springs Mennonite Church. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining and planting a large garden.

Survivors include one son, James Eichelberger of Racine, Wis.; two daughters, Evelyn Albrecht and Gratice Albrecht, both of Tiskilwa; seven grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren; one great–great–grandchild; one sister, Stella Boshart of Wayland; and one brother, Alvin Graber of Newton, Kan.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, four brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, south of Wayland, with family present from noon to 1 p.m.

The funeral service for Mrs. Bachman will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and Willow Springs Mennonite Church.

Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland is assisting with arrangements.

Gertrud Pennington

Gertrud L. Pennington, 76, of Keokuk, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Born Oct. 5, 1928, in Germany, she was the daughter of Fredrich and Luise Jaeger Geigenmueller.

Mrs. Pennington came to Keokuk from Germany in 1959. She worked at Shellor Globe for more than 30 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Keokuk. She loved to crochet and cook.

Survivors include her companion, Donald R. Boley of Keokuk; one son, Frank A. Pennington Jr. of Keokuk; three daughters, Donna L. Wixom and Christiana C. Pennington, both of Keokuk, and Edith V. Pennington of Bushnell, Ill.; four brothers and one sister, all of Germany; 10 grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren.

There will be no service or visitation.

Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald Hoover

Ronald "Hoov" Hoover, 59, of Lockridge, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at his home. Arrangements are pending at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

Glennys E. Maly Loufek

Glennys E. Maly Loufek, 88, of Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, died at 11:13 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center ER.

Born Sept. 17, 1916, in Cedar Rapids to Eva Weed and George T. McHardy. She married Frank G. Maly on Sept. 1, 1937. He died Oct. 2, 1992. She then married Joseph Loufek on Oct. 3, 1993. He died Jan. 2, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Maynard E. McHardy.

Her great–grandfather, Henry Weed, came to Iowa in 1853 from New York as a pioneer Linn County settler. He received title to his farm in Clinton Township as a land grant patent signed by President Franklin Pierce.

Survivors include daughter Dr. JoEllen Hoth (Steven) of Burlington, IA., son, Allan F. Maly (Nancy) of Basking Ridge, N.J., and stepdaughter Debra Kemp (John) of Shoreview, MN. Six grandchildren: Laura Maly Schmidt (Hans Peter) of Dusseldorf, Germany, Layne Maly of Arlington, VA., Alex Lynne Marsters (Kele) of Basking Ridge, N.J., Alec Maly (Jennifer) of Arlington, VA., Andrew Hoth (Katie) of Burlington, IA.; and Dr. Peter Hoth (Karin) of East Douglas, MA. Two stepgrandchildren: Cory Kemp of Shoreview, MN., and Conan Kemp of Edina, MN. She had eight great–grandchildren.

Glennys was a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids. She had employment as a legal secretary in the law firm of Johnson, Crissman and Lawrence and for many years worked for the Bever family in the office of Park Ave. Realty.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Tuesday Study Club, Chapter IF PEO and the Czech Museum and Library. Her immediate family and friends were her foremost love and concern. She enjoyed reading, bridge, dancing, fishing in Canada and travel. She loved helping children. She appreciated the beauty of nature and the necessity of conservation.

Visitation will be at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 10, with the family receiving friends from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Glennys Loufek will be Saturday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Memories — Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with burial in the Garden of the Cross. Reverend Lloyd Brockmeyer officiating. A memorial has been established for St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

ARVID V. EGERT

Graveside Committal Services for Mr. Arvid V. Egert, 89, of Burlington will be held today in the Rock Island National Cemetery at 1:30 P.M. Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. A memorial has been established for the Burlington Public Library.

Mark Welch

Mark Elliott Welch, 40, of Conyers, Ga., died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003.

Born in Burlington, he was the son of Dennis and Patsy Welch.

Survivors include his son, Andrew Moore; his parents of Conyers; one sister, Christina Peterson of Dacula, Ga.; one niece; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the time of service today at Harry L. White Funeral Home in Conyers.

The funeral for Mr. Welch will be at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Harry L. White Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Private family burial.

Virginia Baker

Virginia B. Brannock Baker, 86, of Keokuk, died at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born Sept. 1, 1918, in Red Oak, she was the daughter of Howard and Cecil Reimers Brannock. In 1962, she married Fred Baker. He died in 1974.

Mrs. Baker worked in a number of government offices including the Pentagon and the House Ways and Means Committee. Later on she and her husband owned and operated Sterling Moving & Storage Co. in Falls Church, Va., as Wheaton Van Lines operators.

She spent most of her adult life in the Washington, D.C., area, moving there during the war years in the 1940s. She lived in Keokuk since October 2001. She was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, Va., the Falls Church Lions and Lioness Clubs and was a long–time volunteer and patron of the Kennedy Center.

Survivors include one sister, Lillian Brannock Sutlive of Keokuk; two nephews; and numerous great–nieces and great–nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Nelson–Boylan–Kelinder Funeral Home in Red Oak. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak. There will be no local visitation or service.

The graveside service for Mrs. Baker will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.

A memorial has been established for Resurrection Lutheran Church, 6201 N. Washington Blvd., Arlington, Va. 22205.

Edith Pauline Hols

Edith Pauline Hols, 94, of Duluth, died suddenly on Jan. 16, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Farmington, Iowa, to Harry R. and Capitola (Blackmer) Jones. She married John A. Hols on June 4, 1932, in Fort Madison, Iowa.

She resided in Burlington, Iowa, from 1942 to 1969 and was a member of the First Congregational Church. She earned a B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, in 1964, an M.A. from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., in 1965, and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1970. Edith taught linguistics at the University of Minnesota Duluth from 1970 until her retirement in 1982. She coordinated development of the UMD linguistics program and English as a Second Language program, and in 1975 was instrumental in founding the Lake Superior English Language Institute to help foreign students develop English language skills. She was active in civic affairs for many years and participated in a book group of UMD retirees. She was much loved and admired by her extensive family. She loved literature, music, especially opera, and foreign travel. In May 1996 she was recognized by Minnesota Governor Arnie Carlson as an Outstanding Minnesota Woman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1966; a son, John A. Hols of Spokane, Wash., in 2006; and a sister, Nellie Naefie of Burlington and Iowa City, Iowa.

She is survived by her son, David R. (Marge) Hols of St. Paul; daughter–in–law Norma Hols of Spokane; four grandchildren, Laura J. (A. Carson) Toepfer of Spokane, Eric D. Hols of Ashburn, Va., (Greta Hols of Woodbridge, Va.,) Brian R. Hols (Susan) of Minneapolis and Jennifer A. Hols of St. Paul; six great–grandchildren; two great–great grandchildren; and several grand nieces and grand nephews.

A memorial gathering in Duluth is being planned. Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 22, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. The graveside funeral service and interment will be Tuesday, January 23, at 9:00 a.m. in Bonaparte Cemetery , Bonaparte, Iowa, with Mr. David Hols officiating.

Annette L. Tiemeyer

The memorial funeral service for Ms. Annette L. Tiemeyer, 42, who died Saturday, January 15, 2005, will be Saturday, January 22nd, at 11:00 AM in Zion United Church of Christ. The Rev. Dr. Gary Chapman will officiate. Private family inurnment will be Saturday afternoon in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The family will receive friends following the memorial funeral service in Zion United Church of Christ Social Room. Memorials have been established for the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter and Great River Hospice. According to Ms. Tiemeyer's wishes, her body has been cremated.

William H. Franklin

The graveside memorial funeral service for Mr. William H. Franklin, 83, who died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, will be Monday, January 24th, at 10:00 AM in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . The Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials for Mooseheart in Mr. Franklin's memory may be left at the funeral home.

Howard A. Hoelzen Sr.

The funeral service for Mr. Howard Arthur Hoelzen Sr., 85, who died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, will be Saturday, January 22nd, at 11:00 AM in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Dan Dingus will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Saturday, January 22nd, in Lunning Chapel and the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service. A memorial has been established for the Salvation Army.

Rex Tadlock

Rex Ira Tadlock, 42, of Burlington, died at 10:21 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Mildred Linder

Mildred Irene Linder, 90, of rural Sperry died Wednesday morning, Feb. 2, 2005, at Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Aug. 29, 1914, in rural Mount Union, she was the daughter of Samuel and Sadie Wolf Johnson. On Feb. 24, 1937, she married Harold E. Linder in Mediapolis.

Mrs. Linder was a teacher's assistant for a number of years as well as a homemaker and partner with her husband on the family farm and other family business activities.

She was a 1932 honor student graduate of Mediapolis High School. She was a longtime resident of rural Sperry and an 85–year member of First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Wayne K. Linder of Fort Wayne, Ind.; one daughter, Elaine Hall of Bettendorf; five grandchildren; and one great–granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and her twin sister.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.

The funeral for Mrs. Linder will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis, with the Rev. Ronald Green officiating. Burial will be in West Liberty Old Stone Cemetery in rural Sperry.

A memorial has been established for First United Presbyterian Church.

Marcella Ensminger

Marcella Ensminger, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant. Arrangements are pending at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

DONALD R. FRANK

Funeral Services for Mr. Donald R. Frank, 83, of Burlington who died on Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Betsy Lee will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call at Prugh's Chapel on Sunday from 12:00 noon until 5:00 P.M. and on Monday from 8:00 A.M. until 1:30 P.M. The family will receive friends at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday from 3:00 until 7:00 P.M. A memorial has been established for the Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Frank is survived by his wife, Ilene of Burlington; one son and daughter–in–law, Warren and Barri Frank of Antioch, California; sister, Mrs. Chester (Betty) Frank of Lake View, Iowa; and three nephews, Douglas, Kregg and Denes Frank.
