Jeanette M. Schulte

The funeral service for Mrs. Jeanette Marie Schulte, 83, who died Friday, February 4, 2005, will be Tuesday, February 8th, at 10:30 AM in St. Luke United Church of Christ. The Rev. Vicki Engelmann will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Memorials have been established for St. Luke United Church of Christ and Danville Care Center.

Kenneth Rankin

Kenneth E. Rankin, 84, of Phoenix, formerly of Biggsville and Oquawka, Ill., died at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix.

Born Aug. 12, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Edgar S. and Veda Alice Perdue Rankin. On Oct. 3, 1942, he married Mablejane Noble in St. Louis. She died Aug. 9, 2002. He then married Abigail Rankin.

Mr. Rankin was a farmer in Warren and Henderson counties since 1948, when he purchased a farm near Rozetta, Ill., and more ground in 1965. He retired in 1979.

He was raised in Biggsville and attended Rankin Rural School, graduating from Biggsville High School. He moved to Arizona in 1984. He enjoyed 4–H and was a past superintendent of the Henderson County Dairy Association.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sharilyn S. Stevenson of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Gary L. Rankin of Tucson; two grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Smith of Kirkwood, Ill., and Annabelle White of Carman, Ill.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Biggsville.

The funeral for Mr. Rankin will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carol Stufflebeam officiating. Burial will be in Biggsville Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Alzheimer's Association and hospices.

Ramona Holmes

Ramona Sue "Mona" Holmes, 42, of Strong–hurst, Ill., died at 12:14 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at her home.

Born March 7, 1962, in Rush–ville, Ill., she was the daughter of Robert and Eva Eddington Pollock. On Nov. 11, 2000, she married Dean Holmes in Denmark.

Mrs. Holmes was a registered respiratory therapist at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was a 1980 graduate of Carthage High School. She was a member of Pheasants Forever, American Quarter Horse Association and was an active halter horse shower. She was an avid animal lover, naturalist and wildlife enthusiast.

Survivors include her husband; her parents of Kirkwood, Ill.; one sister, Roberta Klingler of Carthage; three nephews and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Holmes will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in rural Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established.

Jerry Ross

Jerry Alan Ross, 66, of Carthage, Ill., died of cancer at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at his son's home in West Salem, Ill.

Born Feb. 17, 1938, in Burlington, he was the son of Walter Ray and Gladys Watson Ross. On June 7, 1958, he married Jean Marlay in Davenport.

Mr. Ross was a bookkeeper for Thermogas Co. in Ottumwa for 14 years, then was a plant manager in Lime Springs. From 1977 to 1983 he owned and operated Our Own Hardware in Lime Springs. For the last 13 years, he worked at Thermogas, now MPC Energy, in Denver, Ill.

He was a 1956 graduate of Winfield High School and a 1960 graduate of Burlington Business School with a degree in accounting. He loved building and restoring his John Deere toy tractor collection and farm set, which won many trophies and awards at area shows.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Debra Jean Smith and Shari Rae Bolton, both of Lime Springs; one son, William Alan Ross of West Salem; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Canby of Winfield and Judy Schieffelbein of Jasper, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral for Mr. Ross will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Carthage, with the Rev. Bill Pyatt officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Winfield–Scott Township Cemetery in Winfield.

A memorial has been established.

Elberta Jesberg

Elberta Jesberg, 91, of Farmington died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Born Nov. 4, 1913, in Hillsboro, she was the daughter of Samuel and Vida Shamponio Dick. She married Calvin F. Jesberg on March 24, 1940, in Hillsboro. He died in 1959.

Mrs. Jesberg was a homemaker and also worked at Emerson Electronics in Mount Pleasant.

She was a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, Farmington Garden Club and four card clubs.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Howerton of Davenport; three grandsons; and five great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter and three brothers.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington.

The funeral for Mrs. Jesberg will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sharon Presbyterian Church in rural Farmington, with the Rev. Daniel Hemken officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Church Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Hazel Sparsman

Hazel Edna Sparsman, 92, of Donnellson, died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon.

Born June 5, 1909, in Donnellson, she was the daughter of George and Katherine Hirstein Schock. She married Nicholas S. Sparsman on July 21, 1934, in San Francisco. He died Dec. 9, 1959.

Mrs. Sparsman was owner/operator of the grocery store in Donnellson, worked at Schock's Uptown Cafe, and was a dental assistant for many years.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Donnellson and an honorary life member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, watching game shows, basketball and baseball games and was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Overton of Iowa City, Jo Ann Dunmire of Cedar Rapids and Jacqueline Gioima of Lacy, Wash.; six grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, six sister and a son–in–law.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Hofbauer Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The funeral for Mrs. Sparsman will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson.

Memorials have been established for Donnellson American Legion Auxiliary and Kingston Hill Retirement Home. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Larry D. Gillette

The funeral arrangements for Mr. Larry Dale Gillette, 65, who died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 are pending in Lunning Chapel. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Hospice of Metro Denver.

Norma J. Callison

The funeral service for Mrs. Norma Jean Callison, 80, who died Saturday, February 26, 2005 will be Thursday, March 3rd at 2:00 PM in First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Dennis Tevis will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after noon on Tuesday, March 1st, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Memorials have been established for the First United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.

Mary Dowell

Mary Frances Dowell, 58, of Fort Madison died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at her home.

Born Dec. 29, 1946, in Galesburg, Ill., she was the daughter of Clarence and Mary Milan Shepard. She married Arnold Dowell on June 24, 1967, in Galesburg.

Mrs. Dowell was an independent living counselor at Eagle Summit and a beautician. She also was a teacher's associate for the Fort Madison School District since 1994.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Shelly Hoenig and Dawn Coffman, both of Fort Madison; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Her body has been cremated.

The celebration of life service for Mrs. Dowell will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fort Madison, with the Revs. Gordon Lundberg and Mike McHugh officiating. The family will meet with friends following the service at the church.

Memorials have been established for the P.A.W. Animal Shelter and Lee County Hospice. Contributions may be left at the church the day of the service.

Thula Hallmark

Thula Hallmark, 82, of Aledo, Ill., formerly of New Boston, Ill., died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Mercer County Hospital in Aledo.

Born Oct. 9, 1922, in Allen County, Ky., she was the daughter of Ed and Agnas Carter Henson. On March 10, 1939, she married Claude King in Carthage, Ill. On April 15, 1960, she married Elvin Hallmark in Lewiston, Ill.

Mrs. Hallmark owned and operated her own beauty shop in Seaton, Ill., and later from her home near New Boston.

She was a graduate of the Burlington Beauty Academy. She enjoyed gardening, reading and weaving rugs.

Survivors include four sons, Jim King of LaHarpe, Ill., Tom King of Aledo and Tim King and Lindsey King, both of Burlington; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, L.C. Henson of Biggsville, Ill., and J.D. Henson of Plymouth, Ill.; one son, Robert King of Indianola; and two infant grandchildren.

There will be no services. Per her request, her body was deeded to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for scientific research.

Dennison Funeral Home in Aledo is in charge of arrangements.

Lorena Breitenstein

Lorena H. Breitenstein, 90, of Keokuk, died at 5:05 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Born Jan. 15, 1915, in rural Hancock County, Ill., she was the daughter of Harve and Maude Pitt Hardy. On Aug. 15, 1942, she married Henry F. Breitenstein in Keokuk. He died Dec. 15, 1980.

Mrs. Breitenstein worked for State Central Bank in Keokuk for many years.

She was a lifelong resident of the Keokuk area and a graduate of Hamilton High School. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk and a former member of the Keokuk Yacht Club and Keokuk Country Club.

Survivors include six nephews, including Ed Breitenstein of Keokuk; and five nieces, including Judi Hawkins of Keokuk and Carole Betts of Hamilton, Ill.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Christian vigil service at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Breitenstein will be at 10 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk, with the Rev. Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established for the Keokuk Catholic School System.
