Jesse James

Jesse James, 67, of Kahoka, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born Nov. 7, 1936, in Fort Madison, he was the son of William and Gladys McNeely James. He married Carolyn James. He later married Rosalie Stark. She preceded him in death.

Mr. James was an Army veteran. He worked at BTR, now Metzeler Automotive, as an electrician for more than 40 years.

He was of Catholic faith. He was a member of the International Brothers of Electrical Workers 444. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outside in his yard working with his flowers and garden.

Survivors include his first wife; two daughters, Kelly Brumfield and Kim James, both of Natchez, Miss.; one son, Kevin James of Monmouth, Ill.; four grandchildren; and three brothers, Carlin, Ronald and Kenny James.

At his request, there will be no service.

Orpha Mabeus

Orpha Mabeus, 79, of Wever, died Monday morning, Aug. 16, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Arrangements are pending at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

Ruth Harvey

Ruth Ann Harvey, 71, of Peoria Ill., died at 10:13 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.

Born Dec. 23, 1931, in Carman, Ill., she was the daughter of Raymond and Mildred Tompkins Anderson. On Nov. 9, 1951, she married Dewayne Harvey in Strong–hurst, Ill.

She was a 1949 graduate of Stronghurst High School.

Mrs. Harvey worked as a secretary for KBUR radio station in Burlington for six years and for a construction company in Ottawa, Ill., for several years. She was a secretary for APACE Architects in Peoria, Ill. for the 10 years.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Chris Wasik of Peru, Ill.; a son, Craig Harvey of Morning Sun; four grandchildren; a sister, Laura Westerbeck of Des Peres, Mo.; two brothers, Lee Anderson of Texas and Jay Anderson of Carman, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be Monday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Banks & Beals Funeral in Stronghurst.

The funeral for Mrs. Harvey will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Stronghurst Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Stronghurst Ambulance Service.

Marian R. Fritz

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Marian Ruth Fritz, 79, who died Monday, August 16, 2004, will be at 10:00 AM Friday, August 20th, in Sts. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church of West Burlington. Reverend Father Patrick Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Burlington. Friends may call after 8:00 AM, there will be a 3:00 PM Rosary and the family will receive friends following a 6:30 PM Christian Wake Service until 8:00 PM today in Lunning Chapel. A memorial has been established in her memory.

Zada "Sue" Luers

The funeral service for Mrs. Zada "Sue" Luers, 74, who died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 21st, in Lunning Chapel. Pastor Christopher Roepke will officiate. Interment will be in Latty Cemetery , rural Burlington. Friends may call after 8:00 AM and the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, August 20th, in Lunning Chapel. A memorial for Concordia Lutheran Church has been established.

John M. Klein

The funeral service for Mr. John M. Klein, 82, who died Monday, August 16, 2004, will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 21, 2004, in Zion United Church of Christ. Reverend Dr. Gary Chapman will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Military honors will be conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 9162 and 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS. Friends may call after 12:00 PM Friday, August 20th, and the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM Friday in Lunning Chapel. A memorial has been established in his memory.

James B. Garland

The funeral service for Mr. James Burton Garland, 90, who died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, is pending in Lunning Chapel.

Reva O. VaLeu

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Reva Opal VaLeu, 85, who died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, will be at 1:30 PM Friday, August 20th, in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Reverend Forrest Krummel will officiate. Friends may call from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM today in Lunning Chapel. There will be no family visitation. A memorial has been established in her memory.

Sheila Hoaglin

Sheila Hoaglin, 61, of Canton, Mo., formerly of Van Buren County, died in a one–vehicle accident at the junction of Iowa 2 and Van Buren County Route W–40 south of Bonaparte at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

VERA SMOTHERS

Funeral Services for Vera Ferne Smothers, 83, of Burlington who died Tuesday will be held in Prugh's Chapel today at 10:30 A.M. Reverend Gary Chapman will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established for the First Presbyterian Church.

Luther Barr

Luther C. Barr, 85, of Fairfield, died at 5:57 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Born April 21, 1918, south of Wayland, he was the son of Ray and Ethel Stiles Barr. He married Alma V. Douthart; they later divorced. On May 26, 1979, he married Adra Shipley.

Mr. Barr was a farmer. He then went to work for International Harvester in Ottumwa in 1965 and later worked for American Chain and Cable in Fairfield.

He grew up in the Packwood–Fairfield area, lived in the Albia community and lived in Burlington for 25 years before returning to Fairfield. He attended school in rural Jefferson County through the eighth grade. He farmed with horses until 1956, when he began using a tractor. He enjoyed camping, fishing and working with his horses.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Carl Barr of Fairfield; three daughters, Bonnie Devlin of Nixa, Mo., Bettye Coffin of Fairfield and Mary Barr of Davenport; 15 grandchildren; 19 great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren; eight stepchildren; 28 stepgrandchildren; and 33 stepgreat–grandchildren.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service for Mr. Barr will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield, with Pastor Stephen Higdon officiating. The body has been cremated. Burial will be at a later date in McDowell Cemetery near Pleasant Plain.

A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association.

John Lefler Sr.

John Gilbert Lefler Sr., of Keokuk, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at his home.

Born Dec. 4, 1924, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of Harold Clifford and Stella Maude Wasion Lefler. He married Virginia Helen Arrowood in East Peoria, Ill.

Mr. Lefler was the owner and operator of Keokuk Termite Control before retiring. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Calvary Foursquare Church in Keokuk. He loved to go camping and fishing and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Michael Lefler; Steven Lefler and John Lefler Jr.; three daughters, Brenda Bond, Beverly Brotherton and Deborah Tibbits; 18 grandchildren and 13 great–grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Lefler will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home with the Revs. Dan Davis and Bob Lane officiating. Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery with military rites.

Memorials have been established for Lee County Hospice and the Calvary Foursquare Church.

Paul Torn

Paul George Torn, 78, of Burlington, died at 1:43 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Burlington, he was the son of Hubert J. and Florence M. Krause Torn.

Mr. Torn was an AEC–ALO accredited inspector by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 20 years. He also was proprietor of the Arrowhead Motel.

He was a graduate of Burlington High School. He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church and a 49–year member and lieutenant colonel in the Civil Air Patrol. He was past commander of the Burlington Squadron and the squadron headquarters, "Torn Hall," is named after him. He continued to be a supporter. He was a World War II Air Force veteran.

Survivors include one sister, Marjorie P. Wall of Frederic, Mich.; one niece, Susan Calver of Mohamet, Ill.; and one nephew, Michael Wall of Aurora, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Christian wake service.

The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Torn will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Lumsden officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Iowa Civil Air Patrol Cadet Scholarship Foundation.

Theodore Vinovich

Theodore "Ted" Vinovich, 83, of Burlington, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Unit in Burlington.

Born Aug. 24, 1921, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of Ralph and Martha Marvos Vinovich. On April 23, 1949, he married Marie Waninger in Peoria.

Mr. Vinovich was a grain elevator manager until 1986, when he retired.

He served in the Army military police during World War II. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Grain Elevators and Processors Association, Kiwanis, American Legion Post 52, Elks, Veteran's of Foreign Wars and Travelers Protective Association of America. He served on the Chamber of Commerce transportation committee for years. He volunteered at Burlington Medical Center for traffic control, and he was a captain on the riverboat. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed golf.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Peter T. Vinovich of Burlington; three daughters, Polly Lindstadt of Burlington, Pam Carter of Rockford, Ill., and Paula Yowell of Richmond, Texas; six grandsons; one granddaughter; two step–granddaughters; one broth–er, Ralph Vinovich of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Olga Simpson of Peoria, Ill., and Dorothy Merritt of Dallas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Prugh's Chapel, with family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. at Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral service for Mr. Vinovich will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer's Unit at Klein Center.

Ollie Allen

Ollie Pauline Allen, 94, of Winfield died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.

Born Sept. 16, 1910, in Winfield, she was the daughter of David and Clara Skipton Hess. On Oct. 15, 1929, she married Guy Allen in Mount Pleasant. He died Nov. 25, 1995.

Mrs. Allen helped on the farm and also worked as a telephone operator, at Oregon Dry Goods and Weber Dry Goods in Winfield and retired from Ralph's Big Value Grocery in Winfield.

She was a graduate of Winfield High School. She was a member of Winfield First Presbyterian Church and Winfield American Legion Auxiliary 643. She was a former member of TTT and the Past Chiefs.

Survivors include one daughter, Patty Cummings of Burlington; one granddaughter; four great–granddaughters; one sister, Nelle Lindell of Winfield; four nieces; and five nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother, three stepbrothers, one grandson, one niece and two nephews.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Monday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to the time of service Tuesday at Winfield First Presbyterian Church.

The funeral for Mrs. Allen will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Winfield First Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Patte Henderson and Richard Gorham officiating. Burial will be in Winfield–Scott Township Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Sunrise Terrace.
