Opal Friesenberg

Funeral service for Opal Mae Friesenborg, 90, was held Monday afternoon, December 29, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Rev. Perry Fruhling officiated with Mary Ann Olsen as organist.

Vocalist were Rosemary Brackey and Jan Block who sang "Your Borning Cry" and "Does Jesus Care." The congregation sang "Lift High The Cross" and "How Great Thou Art."

The casket bearers were Tracy Adams, Kurt Allen, William Friesenborg, Joe Larson, John Larson and Brent VanKoevering.

Burial was in Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center.

The daughter of Francis and Helen (Espe) Berhow, Opal was born July 18, 1907, near Kanawha. Her family moved to Buffalo Center in 1919. She was confirmed at Liberty Lutheran Church, Rake, and received her education at Buffalo Center High School.

In 1925 she was married to William Friesenborg. He died November 15, 1958.

Mrs. Friesenborg moved to Thompson in 1975 and resided there until 1991 when she became a resident of Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, and was active in the Eden #4 Birthday Club for several years.

She died December 25, 1997, at Timely Mission.

Survivors include two sons, Gary and his wife Linda of Buffalo Center and Tim of Golden City, Mo.; two daughters, Arvilla Allen and her husband Eugene of Rockford, Ill., and Jackie Larson of Buffalo Center; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Warner and her husband Maynard of Rockford, Ill., Wanda Cairns of Tavares, Flo., and Helen Nitzband and husband Rod of Eufaula, Okla.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; two sons, Billy and Marlyn Friesenborg; one daughter, Arlette; and a son-in-law, Ronald Larson.

Harriet Brown

Funeral service for former local resident, Harriet M. Brown, 68, of Buffalo Center, was held October 6 at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Pastor Bill Peake officiated.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery , Britt.

Mrs. Brown died October 3, 1997, at her home in Buffalo Center.

Harriet Margine Brown, daughter of Henry and Maggie (Sleper) Janssen, was born February 17, 1929, at Buffalo Center. She graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1946. She taught country school near Buffalo Center.

She married Merle Lester Brown June 10, 1947. The couple farmed near Scarville and later moved to a farm in Linden Township. In the spring of 1997, Mrs. Brown moved into Buffalo Center.

She worked as a dietary cook at the Titonka Care Center and was supervisor for many years at the Forest City Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, and was active in several organizations within the church. She was also active with the senior citizens, Elderbridge and was a 4-H leader.

Survivors include her children and families: Marlys Schweback and husband Rod of Alton; Melvin and his wife Cindy Lou of Bricelyn, Minn.; Margie Hoeft and special friend Richard Brighton of Leland; Merlyn and wife Cindy Jo of Kanawha; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Blanche Brown of Mason City, Velma Brown of britt, Marlene Oudekerk and husband Albert of Mason City and Viola Brown of Forest City; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather; her husband Merle in 1990; and a son--in-law, Jim Hoeft.

Katherine Carmen-Aukes

Katherine Carmen-Aukes, 89, of Buffalo Center died October 31, 1998, at her home.

Her funeral service was held Tuesday, November 2, at First Congregational Church, Buffalo Center. Pastor David Langer officiated.

Burial was in Graceland Cemetery , Buffalo Center, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The youngest daughter of George and Johanna (Beek) Blank, Katherine was born September 30, 1908, at Garner. She was baptized at the Crystal Lake Methodist Church. When a young child, her family moved to Osakis, Minn., where Katherine attended school and grew to womanhood.

When her mother moved to Buffalo Center in 1932 following the death of her father, Katherine followed and began working at Akkerman Cafe where she met George A. Carmen. They were married July 26, 1934, at Garner.

George A. Carmen operated the Buffalo Center Tribune with his father. He and Katherine continued to run the newspaper after George M. Carmen’s death in 1943. Her husband died May 30, 1964, and Katherine became owner and editor of the Tribune.

Later she was married to R. E. Aukes on September 30, 1975. After her marriage she left her position at the newspaper. R. E. Aukes died November 17, 1995.

Mrs. Aukes was a member of the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center; past unit and county president of the Legion Auxiliary. She was also active in County Cousins and senior citizen’s events.

She is survived by two nephews, Donald Neuberger and Roger Neuberger and their families of Clear Lake; her children from her marriage with R. E. Aukes: three daughters, Mildred Dontje and Ruby Hofbauer, both of Forest City, and Mary Khowassah of Iowa City; seven sons, Don of Conway, Ark., Ray of Buffalo Center, Merle of Lake Mills, Robert of Aledo, Ill., Ervin of Menifer, Ark., Rollin of Kiester, Minn., and Loren of Forest City; 38 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; six sisters, two brothers and by one granddaughter.

Doug Voortman

Douglas C. Voortmann, 32, of Buffalo Center died September 28, 1998, at his home after a battle with cancer.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, with Rev. Bill Peake officiating. Burial will be in Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center.

He is survived by his wife Lynnae and their three children: Desirrae, Dylan and Danica, all at home; his parents, Clarence and Mary Ann Voortmann of Buffalo Center; one brother, David Voortmann of Mason City; and his grandmother, Martha Voortman of Buffalo Center.

He was preceded in death by his parental grandfather and maternal grandparents.

Gene Black

Last rites for Gene Black of Buffalo Center were held Tuesday, May 12, at United Methodist Church, Buffalo Center. Rev. Lois Abel officiated.

Burial was in Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center.

Black died May 9, 1998, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was 84.

Kenneth Bruns

Last rites for Kenneth J. Bruns, 66, were held Thursday morning, April 23, 1998, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Kiester, Minn.

Officiating clergy was Rev. Elaine Shelby. Edith Hintz served as organist. The congregation joined to sing "Abide With Me," "Hymn of Promise," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Amazing Grace."

The casket was carried by Wayne Roth, Norman Roth, Roger Halvorson, Leroy Bruns and Wayne Olson.

Interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center, with Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Jerrold Bruns, the son of William and Anna (Roth) Bruns, was born August 3, 1931, on a farm north of Woden. His family later moved to the Thompson area and he attended school at Thompson.

He married Elsie Knutson October 11, 1952. That same year he was drafted by the U. S. Army and spent his duty on the California Coast. He was discharged from active duty in 1954 and moved to the Buffalo Center area.

He was a grain farmers, and also raised hogs, cattle and dairy cattle.

In 1959, Ken and Elsie moved to their present home north of Thompson. He also trucked for his brother, Clarence Bruns. He enjoyed farming, going to the car races with his grandsons and spending time with his family.

He was a past commander of the Kiester American Legion and a member of many other organizations. He also helped out at Air Bears in Thompson.

Kenneth Bruns died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at his home. He was 66.

Survivors include his wife Elsie; two daughters, Renee Frelund and her husband Bill and their two sons, Mike and Tom of Mason City; Sheri Dankert and her husband Tom and their daughter Erin of Austin, Minn., and one son, Marcus Bruns and his wife Jolene of Forest City; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Bruns of Cresco; his brothers, Harold Bruns of Mason City, Merlin Bruns and his wife Leona of Fort Dodge; two sisters, Mildred Penning of Kiester, Minn., and Myrna Christoffer of Fort Dodge; sister-in-law Elaine bruns of Waterloo and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers Clarence Bruns and Marvin Bruns as well as an infant brother, Donald Bruns.

William Huglin

William F. Huglin, 81, Rockwell, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at the Good Shephard Nursing Home.

Funeral service was held at Saturday, March 28, at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home. Officiating was Rev. Randy Nielsen, chaplain of Good Shephard Nursing Home.

Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery . Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Diabetes Foundation.

Huglin was born October 12, 1916, at Blue Earth, Minn., the son of William F. and Nelle (Crawford) Huglin. He graduated in 1933 from the Blue Earth School. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge, member and past board member of the Cerro Gordo County Cattlemen Assoc. and North Iowa Golden Wedding Jubilee Club. He was a county ASC committeeman and when he lived in Rake he served on the school board.

He was united in marriage to Florence Smith on February 5, 1938, in Buffalo Center. They lived there for two years and then lived west of Rake for 19 years before moving to Rockwell in 1959. He farmed where ever he lived and loved his livestock.

Survived are his wife of 60 year,s Florence, their daughter Betty Huglin of Wausau, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his two brothers, Raymond and one in infancy.

Clara Larson

Clara M. Larson of Buffalo Center died January 8, 1998, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, at the age of 89 years.

Her funeral service was held Monday morning at Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiated.

Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery . Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of S. S. and Martha (Welland) Varland, Clara Matilda was born April 2, 1908, in Eden Township. She attended rural school at Eden #5 and the Thompson High School.

She married Bert E. Larson at Thompson June 12, 1936. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in June of 1986. In the fall of 1989 the Larsons moved to their present home in Buffalo Center.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda and her husband Don Landheer of Des Moines; one son, James and his wife Jill Larson of Buffalo Center; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Varland of Albert Lea; and a brother-in-law, Gus Gustafson of Forest City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bert in 1996; and five sisters and three brothers.

George R. Swalve

George R. Swalve of Buffalo Center died December 8, 1997, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpaitent Unit, Mason City, at the age of 89 years.

Last rites were held December 11, 1997, at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center.

Pastor Bill Peake officiated with interment in Olena Mound Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Raymond Swalve, Merlin Swalve, Travis Swalve, Layne Swalve, Scott Swalve and Randy Swalve.

Marlene Krull was organist for the service.

Gerhart (George) Reinhart Yohonn Swalve was born August 9, 1908, in Williams to John and Jantje (Arends) Swalve.

He married Gesina Janssen December 15, 1931, at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka.

He was a farmer and also owned and operated a Gamble’s store in Northwood. In the 1970s, the Swalves moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they retired.

Survivors include five sons, Lewis Swalve and his wife Donna of Hayfield; Arlo Swalve and wife Lucille of Hinton, Allan Swalve and wife Sharon of George, Lloyd Swalve and wife Linda of Spring Grove, Minn., and Cecil Swalve of Britt; 21 grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gesina on June 26, 1997; one son, Larry; two brothers, Arrend and Henry Swalve; and two sisters, Jeanette Moore and Anna Rippentrop.
