Clarence Penning

Rites for Clarence Burton Penning, 79, of Buffalo Center were held Saturday, October 25, at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka.

Rev. Dennis Redeker officiated with burial in Ramsey Cemetery.

Penning died October 22 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, following a brief fight with melanoma cancer.

He was the son of Bielto and Rally (Redenius) Penning, born February 13, 1918, near Britt.

December 31, 1941, he married Dorothy Sleper at Ramsey Reformed Church. The couple lived and farmed near Britt from 1946-1963 and since that time near Buffalo Center.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Penning; daughter Barbara and her husband Robert Donkersloot of Mt. Pleasant; son Douglas Penning and his special friend Karen Larson of Buffalo Center; daughter Carolyn and husband Jay Edgar of Mason City; three grandchildren: Carina, Ryan and Austin Donkersloot; one brother, Robert Penning and his wife Magdalene of Corwith; one sister, Thelma and her husband Richard Beenken of Algona; one sister-in-law, Amelia Graves of Buffalo Center; and nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and three brothers, John Penning, Marvin Penning and one in infancy.

Mary Carolyn Sill

Mary Carolyn Sill, 68, of Wabasha, Minn., died Monday at her home. Her death was due to cancer.

She was born August 27, 1931, north of Titonka, to Robert and Julia (Long) Bunkofske. She graduated from Titonka High School in 1948. She attended Waldorf and Luther Colleges and taught elementary schools in Thompson and Algona. After her marriage she taught at Woden until the birth of her first child.

She was united in Marriage to Floyd Earl Sill on July 24, 1953, at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka. The family lived in Burt and various localities in Minnesota before moving to Wabasha in 1975.

She is survived by her husband Floyd of Wabasha; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Darwin Hovey of New Hampton, Cynthia and Michael Mawdsley of Algona, Cathy Rudd of Eden Prairie, Minn., Cheryl Sill and friend Marty Peil of Zimmerman, Minn.; sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney Sill of Eden Prairie, Robert and Jill Sill of Wabasha, Richard and Holly Sill of Crystal, Minn., 14 grandchildren; and two nephews and one niece.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Wabasha. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Bette Siekmeier

Bette Elaine Siekmeier, 57, died Sunday morning, April 16, 2000, at her home in Thompson.

Last rites were held Wednesday afternoon, April 19, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Pastor Gary Marzolf officiated.

Shirley Peck was the organist and Pastor Marzolf sang "Hymn of Promise." Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus."

Casket bearers were Norman Jacobson, Bruce Jacobson, Norman Dean Spooner, Kenneth Jacobson, David Jacobson and Gary Sanden.

Interment was in Crystal Cemetery , Crystal Lake, Iowa.

Born June 16, 1942 in Northwood, Bette was the daughter of Elmer and Beulah (Jacobson) Olson. She was baptized at First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

She graduated from Ventura High School in 1960 then worked at Damon’s in Mason City until she married Norman Siekmeier on December 1, 1963, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in rural Carpenter. They farmed near Crystal Lake and then moved to Thompson in the fall of 1982. Bette cooked at various establishments over the years and continued baking at home for the holidays and special orders. She had a special interest in collecting cook books and angels and enjoyed gardening and crafts.

She is survived by her husband Norman Siekmeier of Thompson; one sister, Judy Friesenborg of Thompson; two brothers, Harlan and his wife Sandra Olson of Lake Mills and Donald and his wife Julie Olson of Thompson; five nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Elmer and Beulah Olson; and one nephew, Nicholas Friesenborg.

Mearld L. Pierce

Last rites for Mearld L. Pierce, 90, of Lake Mills, were held Saturday afternoon, July 1, 2000, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills. Rev. Jeanne Martin officiated with burial at Sunnyside Cemetery , Lake Mills.

Mearld Leslie Pierce the son of Clair and Gertrude (Hoffman) Pierce, was born March 13, 1910, at Boone. When he was four, his parents moved six miles south of Kiester, Minn., where they farmed and he grew up with his brothers and sisters.

On September 26, 1935, Mearld married Elizabeth Stevens at the Church parsonage in Kiester. They bought the family farm and raised their children on it.

Mearld loved his farming life of 35 years and retired in 1981 to Lake Mills. He belonged to the Eagles in Albert Lea, Minn., and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Both Mearld and Elizabeth moved into Mills Harbour in December of 1999. Mearld passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Lake Mills; four children, Lanny Pierce Sr. and his wife Sally of Joice; Darrell Pierce and his wife Sandy of Sacramento, Calif., Shirley Mason and her husband Skip of Bonanza, Oreg., and Richard Pierce and wife Darlene of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Lanny Pierce Jr., Michael Pierce, Nichole Pierce, Dawn Madson, Jennifer (Mason) Heckman, Darla Pierce and Doreen Pierce; three step-grandchildren: Curtis Leverton, Christen Funk and Lance Hartkopp; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nadine Morgan of Seattle, Wash.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Larry; two brothers, Forest Pierce and Clair Pierce; and one sister, Maxine Ericson.

Anna Marie Nash

Anna Marie Nath, 82, of Thompson died May 26, 2000, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral service was held Tuesday morning at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Rev. Mark Decker officiated with special music by Mary Ann Olsen, organist, and Jan Block, soloist.

The casket was carried by Denny Nath, Jr., Jeffrey Nath, Alaina Nath, Jon Nath, Dan Nath, Brian Book and Jim Thorson.

Honorary casket bearers were Tony Nath, Cindy Rowell, Chris Nath, Penny Book and Melissa Erickson.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson. Winter Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Born to Henry Sr. and Kate (Lass) Nath, Marie was born May 30, 1917, at Perry. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Perry.

As a young girl she moved with her family to Thompson where she received her education. Marie remained a resident of Thompson her entire life.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and also by many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Those who preceded her in death were her parents; brothers Harry Nath, John Nath, Hank Nath, George Nath and Elmer Nath; and sisters Lillian and Catherine.

Gloria (Wentworth) Berhow

Thompson native Gloria C. (Wentworth) Berhow, 73, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, Minn.

Her funeral service was held Saturday morning, April 22, at Morningside Memorial Gardens in Coon Rapids, Minn., with Pastor Ken DeFor officiating.

Interment was at Morningside Memorial Gardens.

The daughter of James and Martha (Johnson) Wentworth, Gloria was born March 27, 1927, in Thompson. She was married to Merle Berhow and was a life member of Sgt. John Rice VFW Post #6316 of Blaine, Minn.

She is survived by her mother, Martha Wentworth of Thompson; one son, Carlyle Berhow of Baxter; four daughters, Noreen Chapman of Pequot Lakes, El Jean Cracauer of Winona, Minn., Karen Erickson of Fridley, Minn., and Sharon Sabourin of Blaine, Minn.; five brothers, James Wentworth of Nisswa, Minn., Steven Wentworth of Merrifield, Minn., Alan Wentworth of Denver, Colo., Kerry Wentworth of Thompson and Doug Wentworth of Forest City; two sisters, Shirley Henning of Fertile and Myrna Akers of Brighton; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her father; two sisters and a brother.

Edith Mitchell

Edith Myra Mitchell, 86, died peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2000 at Westminster Healthcare Center in Lake Ridge, VA. She was born on March 5, 1914, in Lorimor, Iowa. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in education and was a life-long teacher.

Though she had taught every grade kindergarten through high school, she spent most of her teaching years inspiring 4th and 5th Graders, most recently at Hollin Hill School in Alexandria, VA.

Edie (as she was known) loved nature. She kept bees, fed birds, banded butterflies, made maple syrup each spring, loved to go camping and canoeing, and in later years, loved Elderhostel and frequent U.S. and International travel. She will also be remembered for her tremendous sense of adventure. She learned to ski when she was 40, rappelled down a mountain at 50, rode a jet ski at 60 and went parasailing at 70.

She leaves a husband of 42 years, Arthur Mitchell; two children, Alan Mitchell and Sue Brown; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her first husband, Arthur Israel.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, (703) 765-5950. Memorial gifts may be given to HomeCall Hospice Foundation, 3025 Haymaker Court, Suite 303, Fairfax, VA 22031.

Martin Sveen

Funeral service for Martin Sveen of Leland was held at West Prairie Lutheran Church Monday, October 19, 1998. Officiating clergy was Dan Christensen with music provided by Clarine Ambroson, organist, and Wayne Ambroson, soloist.

Casket bearers were David Beenken, Dean Beenken, Mark Bachman, Bryce Juhl, Dan Beenken, Debra Acost, Michael Solomonson and Jeremy Sveen.

Honorary casket bearers included Ted Van Hove, Arlin Zingg, Allen Peterson, Robert Thorson, Philip Carson, Dale Zing, Leonard Holland and Vernon Shutter.

Interment was in West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

Born February 12, 1912 in rural Thompson to Bert B. and Dena (Kjendlie) Sveen, Martin was baptized and confirmed in the Synod Lutheran faith. He received his education in country schools in the Forest City and Thompson areas.

He married Frances A. Halverson December 19, 1936, at the Synod Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple lived and farmed on the same farm northwest of Leland until the spring of 1979 when they moved into Leland.

He served as school director for many years at Newton School #4. He was an active member of West Prairie Lutheran Church until his health failed. He served as a trustee and was on the cemetery board. In the early 1950s he took up flying and became known as one of the "flying farmers" in the area. Farming and farm-related activities were his life.

He died Thursday, October 15, 1998, at his home in Leland.

Survivors include two daughters, Marlis and her husband Merlin Beenken of Wesley and Ruth and her husband Roger Bachman of Forest City; one son, Kevin Sveen and his wife Janet of Leland; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ervin Sveen and his wife Clara of Woodland Hills, Calif.; three sisters, Emma Juhl and her husband Ralph of Crystal Lake; Mildred Nolte of North Hollywood, Calif.; and Beatrice Carter and husband Harvey of Overland Park, Kans; a sister-in-law, Doris Swain of Butler, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Frances; a son-in-law, Don Solomonson; a great-grandson, Louden Beenken; three brothers, Arnold Sveen, Elling Sveen and Philip Sveen; and three sisters, Mabel Hansen, Nelia Draper and Marie Sveen.

Arvilla Olson

Funeral service for Arvilla J. Olson of Elmore, Minn., was held October 9, 1998, at Shiloh Lutheran Church, Elmore. Pastor John Hagen officiated. Organist was Marilyn Stewart.

Casket bearers were Eldon Goeke, Alvin Ferguson, Bill Sabin, Darvin Olson, Jarrod Stewart and John Sabin.

Burial was in Riverview Cemetery , Elmore, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Born January 1, 1908, on the family farm near Rake, Arvilla was the daughter of Nels and Mary (Sandum) Sabin.

She married Corald Olson at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, November 7, 1929.

Mrs. Olson died Tuesday, October 6, 1998, at United Hospital in Blue Earth at age 90.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Eide and her husband Alton of Lakewood, Colo.; two granddaughters; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Olson of Rake and Opal Story of Roundup, Minn.; two brothers, Clifford Sabin and his wife Dorothy of Bricelyn, Minn., and Harlan Sabin of Blue Earth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Corald on March 28, 1981; a daughter, Delpha Kolander; two sisters, Rena and Emma; and five brothers, Arthur Sabin, Nelmer Sabin, Edwin Sabin, Rudolph Sabin and Orville Sabin.
