Dorothy R. Badje

Funeral service for Dorothy R. Badje, 66, was held Wednesday afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated. Comfort music was provided by Cheri Mayland, organist, and Cordell Satre, vocalist.

Casket bearers were Jim Badje, Gary Irons, Eugene Irons, John Irons, Kent Fischer and Gerald Zwiefel. Honorary casket bearers included Carl Boehm, Craig Bachan, Wes Madetzke, Michael Swalve, Larry Hummer, Dale Garvick, Verlin Lemaster and Dr. Jay Rush.

Interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center, with Winter Funeral Home in charge or arrangements.

Dorothy Ruth Badje, daughter of Tony and Julie (Logan) Baschan, was born October 25, 1931, at Austin, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. She graduated from Austin High School and was employed by Hormel in Austin as a bookkeeper.

She married Varl Badje June 15, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. The couple lived on the farm west of Rake.

After suffering a stroke June 29, 1997, Dorothy became a resident at Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center. She died there Sunday, October 4, 1998.

She is survived by her husband Carl of Buffalo Center, one brother, Earl Bachan and his wife Mert of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., three sisters-in-law, Jennie Swalve and husband Evert and Bertha Irons and husband Hjelmer of Buffalo Center, and Josie Head and husband Don of Marion, Ill; three brothers-in-law, John Badje and wife Arelly of Albert Lea, Lawrence Badje and wife Janice of Buffalo Center and Joe Badje and friend Mary James of Rake; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Thelma Johnson

Funeral service for former Thompson resident Thelma E. Johnson, 89, was held Wednesday morning, Sept 9, 1998, at Becida Community Church in Becida, Minn. Rev. James Werlein officiated with interment in Fern Township Cemetery , Becida.

Her grandchildren served as pallbearers.

The family requests that memorials be given to North County Home Care and Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, September 3, 1998, at her home.

She was born June 18, 1909, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to Thom and Jandine (Johnson) Thorsen. When she was in her early teens she moved to the Bemidji area where she graduated high school. She returned to Iowa and was united in marriage on June 4, 1937, to Daniel N. Johnson. They moved back to Bemidji, then to Thompson. Lignite, N. Dak., was their home for 13 years before returning to the Bemidji area in 1953 where she has lived since.

During the late 1950s, she was co-owner of Sally’s Yarn Shop and during the 1970s until the early 1990s she owned and operated Great River Knit Shop from her home.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Kay Rein of Waite Park, Minn., and Ann and husband Bruce Piersol of Red Lake Falls, Minn.; three sons, Donald and his wife Marjorie Johnson of Bemidji, Minn., Keith and wife Julie Johnson of Bemidji and Steven and wife Christine Johnson of Becida, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Janice (Bert) Johnson of Bemidji.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Daniel in 1964 and two brothers, Oscar Thorsen and Albert Thorsen.

Lyle E. Hauan

Former Thompson resident Lyle Eugene Hauan died Friday, August 7, 1998, at his home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. He was 46 years old.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 29, at 10 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating.

Following the service, a luncheon will be served at Air Bears in Thompson.

Lyle chose to be cremated and family members and friends were in attendance as his ashes were scattered on the lake at Copper Canyon.

The son of the late Milton Hauan and Mrs. Phylis Hauan Robinson, Lyle was born October 16, 1951, in Forest City. He served 11 years in the Air Force during the Viet Nam era.

He and his wife Kim were married December 22, 1994, in Las Vegas, Nev.

At the time of his death, he worked for C. R. England & Son Trucking Company. He and his wife became an owner-operating team in January of 1998. In July of 1997, the Hauans were "Drivers of the Month." He enjoyed boating, water skiing, farming, riding their wave runner and just living out his dreams with his wife Kim in their own paradise.

Survivors include his wife Kim Marie Hauan of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., twin daughters, Lisa Marksberry of Portland, Ind., and Amy Wonsmos of Wesley; two step-daughters, Amanda Snyder of Lake Havasu City and Stacey Ann Snyder of Northwood; seven grandchildren; his mother, Phyllis Robinson; and five sisters, Becky Bowling of Henderson, Nev., Jean Koontz of Lake Mills, Brenda Austin of LaHabra, Calif., Barbara Bowling of Olancha, Calif., and Margaret Zanitsch of Hesperia, Calif.

Emil A. Kallastad

Emil Adolph Kallestad, 81, of Northwood died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. His funeral service was held Friday afternoon, July 24, at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, with Dr. Jennifer Edinger and Rev. David Wall of First Lutheran Church in Northwood officiating.

Burial was in West Cemetery , Rake, with military graveside honors by American Legion Post #539 of Rake and "Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood.

The son of Alfred and Julia (Quam) Kallestad, Emil was born February 5, 1917, in Frost, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Rake High School in 1935 and traveled around the country playing semi-pro baseball for a short time. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Elwood August 27, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She preceded him in death on February 6, 1993.

April 4, 1942, he was inducted into the U. S. Army. As a member of the Third Division, he participated in four sea-born invasions. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Croix De Guerre with Palm Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one silver and two bronze battle stars, the presidential unit citation as well as other campaign ribbons. He was honorably discharged August 2, 1945, at Ft. Sheridan, Ill.

The Kallestads made their home in Rake for over 50 years where he worked at various jobs until becoming employed at Fleet Guard Inc., in Lake Mills. He worked there for 18 years until his retirement. The couple lived in Northwood since 1991.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Northwood, "Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood and American Legion Post #539 of Rake.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Savage and her husband Garry of Mason City; two grandchildren, Kelly Savage and Brian Savage, both of Mason City; two step-grandchildren, Mike Savage and his wife Stacy of Gilbert, Ariz., and Jennifer Reiss and her husband Wes of Belview, Ill.; one sister, Alvina Matson of Buffalo Center; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lester Kallestad, Ervin Kallestad and Melvin Kallestad; and one sister, Alice Kallestad.

Vern K. Gullord

Memorial service for Vern Keith Gullord, 57, was held Wednesday, June 10, at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. Gullord died May 7, 1998, at McAlester Hospital in McAlester, Okla.

Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated with Carol Asmus serving as organist. Marlys Andersen, soloist, sang "Amazing Grace" and "I’m But A Stranger Here, Heaven is My Home." Congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Beautiful Savior."

Military rites were provided by Rake American Legion Post #539.

Interment was in East Cemetery , Rake.

The son of Archie and Alma (Amble) Gullord, Vern was born September 26, 1940, near Rake. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. He received his education at Rake Community Schools and graduated with the class of 1958. After completing his education, he entered the United States Army, serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

He enjoyed trucking and worked for several companies during his life. He also worked for the Rake Farmers Co-op Elevator and for several area farmers.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rake and the VFW.

Those who survive him are five brothers, Carroll Gullord and his wife Elfreida of Mesa, Ariz., Duane Gullord of Mesa, Gordon Gullord of Cedar Rapids, Truman Gullord and his wife Marva of Albert Lea, Minn., and Vernal Gullord and his wife Judy of Arvada, Colo.; two sisters, LoEtta Seltun and her husband Jerry of Bricelyn, Minn., and Sandra Walter and her husband Robert of Morrison, Colo.; and by a special friend, Susan Steffen, of Dennis along with many other relatives.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one infant brother.

Anora Evenson

Anora J. Evenson, 97,of Chicago, Ill., died May 11, 1998, at Lincoln Park Care Center, Chicago. Her body was cremated. Memorial service will be held at Thompson at a later date.

Anora, the daughter of Martin and Malinda Evenson was born June 20, 1901 at Roland. She moved with her parents to the Thompson area at the age of 12. She attended a country school at Thompson and also Waldorf College.

She was a professional artist and taught art in the Chicago area for many years.

She is survived by her sister, Mae Alm of Lake Mills, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Minnie Borseth, and three brothers, Julian Evanson, Myron Evanson, and Kenneth Evenson.

Gwendolyn Kedney

Funeral service for Irene Gwendolyn Kedney was held April 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dobbs Ferry.

Mrs. Kedney died April 21, 1998, in the hospital at Dobbs Ferry, New York.

She was born on the Thorland farm southwest of Thompson June 19, 1921, to Osmund R. and Emma (Mattison) Thorland. She graduated from Thompson High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames. She also graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing, Rochester, Minn., and served her country in World War II in the Philippines, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp.

July 19, 1947, she was united in marriage at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, to Robert O. Kedney of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, where she has since made her home. She spent many years as a nursing supervisor and giving tender, loving care to the patients at Dobbs Ferry Hospital.

She is survived by her son, Cmdr. Robert O. Kedney II of the U. S. Navy stationed in London, England and his wife, Linda; granddaughter Mollie of London; grandson Robert O. Kedney III of the Naval Academy, Anapolis, Maryland; one sister, Rachel Retland of Thompson; and two brothers, Daniel Thorland of Thompson and Emmet Thorland of Watertown, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Judith Hale; and six brothers, Harold Thorland, Victor Thorland, Randolph Thorland, Erling Thorland, David Thorland and Paul Thorland.

Ralph C. Schnebly

Ralph C. Schnebly, 89, of Santa Clara, Calif., formerly of Thompson, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at the Courtyard Caring Nursing Home in San Jose, Calif.

Memorial services were held April 11 at the Wyant and Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyvale, Calif., with cremation following.

Born December 15, 1908, in Hettinger, N. Dak., Ralph was the son of Charles and Frances (Nall) Schnebly. He received his education in North Dakota and Britt.

He was married to Eleanor Goodrich of Kanawha and the couple lived near Bricelyn, Minn., Buffalo Center and Thompson.

Schnebly was employed for 19 years with the Winnebago REC and for 20 years for the Thompson Community School as custodian and bus driver. After retiring, they were managers of a mobile home court in California for 16 years.

He is survived by three daughters, Majella and her husband Don Flugum of Lake Mills, Kathy and her husband Lew Brewster of Cupertino, Calif., and Leona and her husband Ramiro Guzman of Santa Clara, Calif.; two sons, Loren and his wife Sharon of Linn Creek, Mo., and Dexter and his wife Ralphine of Witchita, Kans.; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eleanor in May of 1992; four brothers and three sisters.

Olive T. Graber

Funeral service for Thompson native Olive T. Graber, 70, was held Saturday afternoon at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Rev. Perry Fruhling officiated with Mary Ann Olsen as organist and John Torkelson as soloist.

Casket bearers were Dale Gettis, Don Richards, Goodwin Boyum, Rev. Richard Erickson, Thomas Dahl, Robert Graber and Rev. Clarence Johnson.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of John and Sophie (Ness) Ullestad, Olive was born February 7, 1928, near Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, and graduated from Thompson High School. Following her graduation from Luther College, she taught in Ledyard.

December 2, 1955, she married Roger Graber at Bethany Lutheran Church. The couple farmed southwest of Thompson until their retirement when they moved to Forest City.

Mrs. Graber was active in Bethany Lutheran Church and Linden Lutheran Church.

For the last three years she resided at Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills, where she died Tuesday, March 31, 1998.

She is survived by her husband Roger of Forest City; one son, Gary and his wife Nancy Graber of Forest City; her daughters, Sharon Graber of New Hope, Minn. and Judy and her husband Ken Strom of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; eight sisters; and one brother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Tom and an infant sister, Stella.
