Raymond A. Gjerdahl

Funeral service for Raymond A. Gjerdahl Jr., 62, manager of the Iron Horse Saloon in Rake, was held Saturday afternoon, March 21, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake.

Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated. Organist was Carol Asmus.

Honorary casket bearers were Larry Anderson, Steve Frandle, Steve Jirovec, Bob Joynt, Cliff LeClaire and Mike Swenson.

Raymond Andrew Gjerdahl Jr. was born November 27, 1935, at St. Paul, Minn., to Raymond Sr. and Loretta (Beck) Gjerdahl.

He was married to Terri Lusby November 7, 1987, on North Mountain in Phoenix Ariz. In December of 1993, the Gjerdahl’s made their home in Rake.

For 33 years, Gjerdahl worked for Northwest Airlines. He retired as a R. E. Mechanic. He was a member of the Moose lodge of South St. Paul and was also a Mason and a Shriner and a member of the Mizpah Lodge No. 191 of St. Paul.

His favorite pastime was Harley Davidson motorcycles and he loved to ride.

Gjerdahl died suddenly Wednesday, March 18, 1993, at United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

He is survived by his wife Terri Gjerdahl of Rake; five children: Raymond and his wife Robin of Mondovie, Wis., June Marie Gjerdahl of Hudson, Wis., Misty Gjerdahl of Buffalo Center, Daniel Gjerdahl of Rake and Tabitha Gjerdahl of Rake; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Marie Booth and her husband Charlie and Ann Marie Haugen, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Mike and his wife Nan Gjerdahl of Owatonna, Minn., Larry Stohr and his wife Sylvia of St. Paul Park, Minn., Dave Gjerdahl andhis wife Sandy of Rake; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Flo Grunvold and Marlene Davidson.

Susan Jutting

Susan Jutting, 92, a native of Rake, died March 5, 1998, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral service was held March 9 at First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Rev. Bill Peake officiating.

Casket bearers were Tom Smith, Deborah Smith, Daniel Smith, Tanya Loumakis, Jay Jutting, Randy Jutting, Eileen Jutting and Jeralyn Smith.

Interment was in Mound Cemetery , Buffalo Center, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Susan was born December 14, 1905, on a farm near Rake to Heiko and Jeanette (Bruhns) Jurgens.

She attended country school and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1924. She taught country school for six years.

June 4, 1930, she marred John H. Jutting. They farmed in the Buffalo Center and Rake area from 1930 until retirement in 1963. The couple lived on the farm until John’s death in 1975 when Susan moved to Buffalo Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Gwen Smith of Mason City; one son, Eldon and his wife Allaire Jutting of Ankeny; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-great-granddaughters; two sisters, Stella Frerichs of Sioux City and Lena Harms of Buffalo Center; a special nephew, Howard Jutting; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; three sisters and three brothers.

Cora Ryg

Funeral service for Cora O. Ryg, 90, was held Thursday afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake.

Officiating clergy was Dr. Jennifer Edinger. Carol Asmus served as organist.

The casket was carried by Steven Ryg, Scott Ryg, Jeff Ryg, Perry Loge, Rickie Ryg and Rodney Ryg.

Honorary casket bearers were Larry and Lois Johnson, Elvin Haugen, Odin Johnson, Lillian Johnson, Mabel Iverson and Barbara Baker.

Interment was in East Cemetery , Rake, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Laffe and Kristianna (Tyellaug) Ryg, Cora was born June 10, 1907, on the Ryg farm east of Rake.

She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, where she was an active member all of her life. She attended country school and lived on the family farm until 1926 when she moved into Rake. She cared for her parents and her sister until they passed away. She also worked for various families around the area cleaning and cooking. Later she worked as a janitor at Zion Church.

Cora O. Ryg died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dora Ryg of Rake; two nephews, Arden and his wife Maxine Ryg of Mesa, Ariz., and Darvin and his wife Donna Ryg of Milaca, Minn.; one niece, Mardelle and her husband Virgil Loge of Albert Lea, Minn., and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ole, John and Kristian; and three sisters, Anna Ryg, Amanda Helseth and Kora Louise Ryg.

Magaret H. Larson

Funeral service for Thompson native Margaret Helen Larson, 74, of Tucson, Ariz., was held at Santa Cruz Lutheran Church in Tucson Saturday morning, February 21. Interment was at South Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Larson died February 18, 1998, after a long illness.

She was born January 3, 1924, in Thompson to James O. and Grace (White) Myhr. She graduated from Thompson High School and worked for a time at the State Legislature in Des Moines as secretary to Rep. Theo Klemesrud. June 30, 1944, she was married to Marvin O. Larson. After his return from the service they moved back to Thompson. When her sons were grown, Margaret worked as a dentist assistant for Dr. Carroll Block for several years. Upon their retirement in 1976, the Larsons moved to Tucson.

Survivors include her sons, James Larson and his wife Yong Hui of Harker Heights, Tex., and John Larson and his wife Gae of North Mankato, Minn.; her grandchildren: Tristen Larson, Malinda Larson, Bonnie Larson and James Larson; many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews; two sisters, Mrs. June (Gehard) Nelson of Tucson and Mrs. Paula (Robert) Buland of Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Memorials may be sent to research on lung disease, bronchiectasis, to the National Jewish Medical Research Center, 1400 Jackson St., Denver, CO 80206.

Richard Dietz

Richard Dietz, 52, of Denver, Colo., died February 12, 1998, at his home in Denver.

The son of Harry "Jack" and Mae Dietz, he was born October 19, 1945, in Britt. He graduated from Thompson High School in 1964 and attended NIACC in Mason City. He was a veteran and served in the Viet Nam war.

Survivors include his mother Mae Dietz of Thompson; two sisters, Harriet and her husband Bill Young of Lake Mills and Bonnie and her husband Jerry Bakken of Northwood; three nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt with Rev. Perry Fruhling of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, officiating. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Ila Mae Krull

Funeral service for Ila Mae Krull, 79, was held Monday afternoon, February 9, 1998 at United Methodist Church in Thompson.

Pastor Wendy Trone officiated and the organist was Eleanor Roper.

Congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Old Rugged Cross."

Casket bearers were her grandchildren: Mark KrulI, Lynn Krull, Jessica Krull, Curt Krull, Jason KruIl, Nicholas Krull, Cara Chapman and Tammy Henson.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ila Mae Krull, daughter of Richard and Tena (Helmers) Price, was born January 25, 1919, at Lakota, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Edward ‘Dutch’ Krull on December 28, 1936, in Sioux Falls, S. Dak. They returned to the Buffalo Center area and worked for a farmer from 1936 to 1940. Then they starting farming at Buffalo Center for two years, moving to the Thompson area in 1943. Then in 1956, they moved to Vinje until 1959 when they moved to the present day farm east of Thompson.

Ila worked at Fleetguard and Winnebago for a number of years. She was instrumental in starting the Methodist food stand the first year at the Winnebago County Fair. She also enjoyed Bingo and fishing and loved to sew in her early years.

Ila was a resident of the Titonka Care Center since December 1997. She died there Thursday, February 5, 1998, at the age of 79 years.

She is survived by her husband, Edward ‘Dutch’ Krull of Thompson; one daughter, Mary Green of Thompson; two sons: Gary and his wife Jeanne of Thompson and Allen and his wife Donna of Parkers Prairie, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Wilson of Hayfield, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Don; three brothers; and one great- grandson.

Joseph B. Norwalk

Funeral service for Joseph Benjamin Nowak, 57, was held Saturday, January 10, 1998, at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

Officiants were Loren Quick and Dennis Falb.

Casket bearers were Joe Badje, Phil Benn, Bill Hansen, Bob Hanson, Brad Quade and Bob Stewart.

Interment was in West Cemetery , Rake.

Nowak was born May 30, 1940, at Winnebago, Minn., to Joseph and Louise (Hurd) Nowak. He grew up in Frost and was educated at the Frost school.

He worked for several area farmers during his life and also worked at the Rake Cooperative Elevator.

He died Wednesday, January 7, 1998, at his home.

Survivors include three sons, David and his wife Sherry Caddogap of Arkansas; Tim of Alden, Minn., and Dan of Rake; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents, Cassie and Emma Johnson; and one infant daughter.

Kenneth Vrieze

Funeral service for Kenneth W. Vrieze of Moore, S. Car., a former area resident, was held Tuesday morning, January 13, at Christian Reformed Church in Woden. Pastor Perry Fruhling of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, officiated.

Casket bearers were Troy Fleenor, Keith Lamaak, Bruce Kluver, LeRoy Vrieze, Travis Tollagson and Wayne Tollagson.

Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery , Britt, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ken was born September 10, 1946, at Garner to Clarence and Ann (Luppen) Vrieze. He attended the Woden-Crystal Lake School District.

February 19, 1965 he married Sharon Tollagson at Woden Christian Reformed Church.

For the past 12 years he has worked as a project superintendent for H & M Construction Company of Jackson, Tenn. Throughout his career he earned numerous safety awards and recognition for his years of service.

Vrieze died suddenly Thursday, January 8, 1998, at Alan Bennett Hospital in Moore. He was 51.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of Moore, S. Car.; two sons, Jeff Vrieze and his wife Donna and Tim Vrieze; two daughters, Cyndy Demory and her husband Mike and Sherri Hill and her husband Robert, all of Moore; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
