Amil Haugen

Funeral service for Amil O. Haugen, 84, was held Tuesday morning, April 28, 1998 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated with burial in East Cemetery , Rake.

Comfort music was provided by Carol Asmus, organist, and Marlys Andersen, soloist. Congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."

The casket was carried by grandchildren Kenny Hanson, Jason Jagerson, Michael Hamre, Tony Zierke, Brent Haugen, Shawn Haugen, Chad Hanson and Randy Risius. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Haugen died April 25, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City at the age of 84.

He was the son of Nels and Johanna (Lein) Haugen, born February 24, 1914, at Otteson. He was baptized at St. Ola Lutheran Church in Bode. At the age of six, his family moved to a farm southeast of Rake. He attended country school near their home and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. Farming was his main interest and he worked for several farmers before starting for himself. He also worked for Green Giant in Blue Earth, Minn.

August 22, 1947, he married Violet Jagerson at the Methodist Church in Blue Earth. They moved onto her home place northwest of Rake where he resided until entering the Good Samaritan Center March 18, 1997. This union was blessed with three children: Gary, Dawn and Steven, and also three children from a previous marriage: Joan, Carole and Arlowe as well as three stepchildren: Gloria, Douglas and Scott Jagerson.

He is survived by his wife Violet of Rake; his sons, Arlowe and his wife Ruth Haugen of Northfield, Minn., Gary Haugen of Rake, Steven Haugen of Fairmont, Minn.; two stepsons, Douglas Jagerson of Petaluma, Calif., and Scott Jagerson and wife Marlys of Elmore, Minn.; three daughters, Joan Hamre of Wallingford, carol Zierke and her husband Merle of Elmore and Dawn Hanson and her husband Dick of Blue Earth; a son-in-law, Harold Risius of Buffalo Center; 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Inga Engelby, Ida Pingle, Gudron Matheson and Ethel Doty and husband Jim; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepdaughter, Gloria Risius; two grandsons, Jeffrey Zierke and Wade Haugen; a granddaughter, Kristi Risius-Ricke; a sister, Sara Larson; three brothers, Tryve Haugen, Norman Haugen and Delmer Haugen; and son-in-law Milford Hamre.

Mike Van Den Hul

Max (Mike) Van Den Hul Jr., 55, of Mason City died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City, due to heart complications.

His funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with Rev. Dan Christensen of Leland officiating.

Serving as organist was Mary Ann Olsen. Frank Myers sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and Amy Thorland sang "In the Garden." Congregational hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace."

Pall bearers included his grandson Joshua Norstrud and friends Darwin Sittig, Robert Lappe, Alan Swenson, Ade Swenson, Ed Shepard, Dana Heinen and Brad Huntington.

Honorary pall bearers were Raymond Baade, Jim Vinz, Lawrence Lodin, Sam Johnson, Charlie Miller, Patty Michaelson, LaVae Lillebo, Guy Markle, James Larson.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with military rites performed by Thompson VFW. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Max Van Den Hul Jr. was born October 27, 1942, at Larchwood to Max Sr. and Nellie (Burgers) Van Den Hul. He attended school at Larchwood and entered the U. S. Army in 1964. He was honorably discharged due to injury in 1966.

He married Sandra Graff September 24, 1966, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. He was employed at Forester in Forest City and later moved his family to Joice and then to Thompson. During his many years in Thompson, he and his wife owned and operated various businesses: Van’s Restaurant, Van’s Station, Van’s Camper Repair, Thompson Car Wash and Van’s Catering Service. He served as Thompson City Clerk for five years before moving to Mason City in 1993.

He was instrumental in the start up of Thompson Rescue Unit and served as the first president of the volunteer rescue squad.

He enjoyed fishing and daily visits to East Park in Mason City. His world evolved around his children and grandchildren. His kindness and caring nature touched the hearts of many.

He is survived by his wife Sandi of Mason City; their five children and families, Kim and Scott Norstrud, Mandra, Joshua and Christopher of Thompson; Todd and Tina Van Den Hul, Keisha, Micheal and Tyler of Oelwein; Chad Van Den Hul and Valerie Hagen, Tawnee and Shania, and Gretchen and Logan of Forest City; Staci Van Den Hul of Mason City; and Michele and Loren Hahle Jr., Coltin, Catalin and Shea of Mason City; 10 brothers and sisters, Herman and Phyllis Van Den Hul of Chamberlain, S. Dak., George and Janet Van Den Hul of Harrisburg, S. Dak., Tena Markle of Ankeny, Wilma Mulder of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Nellie Mullinix of Chatsworth, Marinus and Sharon Van Den Hul of Colorado Springs, Colo., Betty and Bob Morrison of Larchwood, Geraldine and Van Leffler of Mary Esther, Fla., Helen Crawford of Larchwood, and Becky and Tim Breuer of Larchwood; his sister-in-law Barb Mauer of Larchwood; his mother-in-law Florence Graff of Mason City; and many other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ralph Van Den Hul; an infant brother Gerald and an infant sister Helene.

Elmer M. Olson

Longtime Thompson resident Elmer Morris Olson died April 1, 1998, at the Lake Mills Care Center. He was 92 years of age.

His funeral service was held Friday afternoon, April 3, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. Rev. Perry Fruhling officiated. Music was provided by Mary Ann Olsen, organist, and Amy Thorland, soloist.

The casket was carried by Norman Dean Spooner, James Dishon, Norman Jacobson Jr., Kenneth Jacobson, Gary Sanden and Wayne Peterson.

Interment was in Sunset Rest Cemetery , Northwood, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He was the son of Edward and Thea (Wold) Olson, born May 21, 1905, near Kensett.

He married Beulah Jacobson December 24, 1936, in Newman Grove, Neb.

After working as a farm hand around Clear Lake and engaging in farming himself, he worked for Winnebago Industries, Forest City.

Survivors include four children: Bette Siekmeier and her husband Norman of Thompson, Harland and his wife Sandra Olson of Lake Mills, Judy Friesenborg of Thompson and Don Olson and his wife Julie of Thompson; seven grandchildren: Holly Corrigan and her husband Tim of Butte, Mont., Jodi Willert of Lake Mills, Amanda, Angela and Ashley Friesenborg and Joshua and Aaron Olson, all of Thompson; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Dishon of Appleton, Minn., and Irene Dennis of Mason City; three sisters-in-law, Alice Olson of Northwood, Mayvis Spooner of Northwood and Gretel Jacobson of Newman Grove, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Beulah on September 23, 1982; one grandson, Nicholas Friesenborg; two brothers, Alvin Olson and Marvin Olson; and three sisters, Olga Haugen, Clara Wacholz and Pearl Skjeueland.

William Huglin

William F. Huglin, 81, Rockwell, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at the Good Shephard Nursing Home.

Funeral service was held at Saturday, March 28, at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home. Officiating was Rev. Randy Nielsen, chaplain of Good Shephard Nursing Home.

Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery . Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Diabetes Foundation.

Huglin was born October 12, 1916, at Blue Earth, Minn., the son of William F. and Nelle (Crawford) Huglin. He graduated in 1933 from the Blue Earth School. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge, member and past board member of the Cerro Gordo County Cattlemen Assoc. and North Iowa Golden Wedding Jubilee Club. He was a county ASC committeeman and when he lived in Rake he served on the school board.

He was united in marriage to Florence Smith on February 5, 1938, in Buffalo Center. They lived there for two years and then lived west of Rake for 19 years before moving to Rockwell in 1959. He farmed where ever he lived and loved his livestock.

Survived are his wife of 60 year,s Florence, their daughter Betty Huglin of Wausau, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his two brothers, Raymond and one in infancy.

Herman B. Weaver

Funeral service for Herman Bernard Weaver, 77, was held Tuesday morning, March 17, 1998 at Winter Funeral Home, Thompson.

Pastor Perry Fruhling of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, officiated.

Casket bearers were Leonard Harms, Dennis Hoeft, Bob Mattison, Don Mathahs, John Mathahs and Gary Shropshire.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson.

Born March 1, 1921, at Titonka, he was the son of Herman J. and Katie (Nelson) Weaver.

Weaver served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 through 1946.

He married Lillian June Kitner in Minneapolis, Minn., April 29, 1950.

He was employed by International Harvester Corp. and then by Waste System’s Corp. as an heavy equipment operator. Mechanics was his life and hobby. He also had an interest in airplanes and flying.

Herman B. Weaver died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at his home in Thompson.

He is survived by his wife June of Thompson; two grandchildren, Carol Weaver of Thompson and Terry Weaver of Thompson; one great-grandson, Aaron Weaver of Thompson; three sisters, June Behrends, Lois Harms and her husband Leonard, and Bonnie Hoeft and her husband Dennis, all of Forest City; and one brother, Cecil Weaver of Mason City.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Vernon Weaver; one sister and two brothers.

Gerald M. Quam

Gerald M. Quam died March 1, 1998, at his Rake home. He was 75.

Last rites were held the afternoon of March 4 at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated.

Organist was Julie Davids and soloist was Marlys Andersen. The congregation sang "Rock of Ages" and "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less."

Honorary casket bearers were Curtis Peterson, Lonnie Johnson, Omer Folven, Jerry Winter, Elvin Haugen, Jerry Frandle and Don Skogen.

Casket bearers were Larry Johnson, Craig Folven, Tom Rygh, Ron Rygh, Phil Knudtson and George Brookes.

Military rites were presented by the Rake American Legion/VFW Posts Color Guard. Interment was in West Cemetery.

Born April 13, 1922, in Rake to Oscar and Lillian (Knudtson) Quam, Gerald was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. He was an active member of the church until his death.

He graduated from Rake High School in 1939. Following his graduation from Luther College in 1942, he attended midshipman training and entered the Navy in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

July 31, 1943, he married Marjorie H. Hanson at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. He taught, coached and was an administrative assistant in the Rake and Buffalo Center/Rake Schools for 40 years. In 1993, he was recognized for his coaching and his contributions to education by the Iowa State High School Athletic Assoc.

Survivors include his wife Marjorie of Rake; one son, Mark Quam of Clear Lake; two daughters, Marcia Folven and her husband Jon of Oshkosh, Wis., and Louise Hagedorn and her husband John of Rake; grandchildren: Angella, Derek and Jeff Folven and Staci, Jodi and Erik Hagedorn; one brother, Lyle Quam and his wife Cathy of Rake; three sisters, Wanda Rygh and her husband Lloyd of Bricelyn, Minn., Opal Teig and her husband Wayne of Rake and Virginia Reimers and her husband Carrol of Brigham City, Utah; one uncle, Carl Knudston and his wife Phyllis of Rake; and one brother-in-law, Roger Hanson and his wife Bette of Birmingham, Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

James Strong

James "Jim" Strong, 84, a former Thompson resident, died February 14, 1998. A celebration of his life was held February 18 with the eulogy delivered by Mike Creek, friend of the family.

Born August 2, 1913, in Battle Creek, Nebraska, to Harold and Ida Strong,James lived in the Black Hills area as a young boy. He married Eileen Finer in Thompson. They moved to California to find work. Jim worked at Northrop Aircraft during the war.

The Strongs and their two children moved back to Thompson where they operated a garage with Eileen’s sister and brother-in-law. In 1950 they moved back to California where Jim returned to Northrop until 1970 when they moved to Phoenix.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eileen; two children, son David and his wife Donna; and daughter Charri; three granddaughters; two grandsons-in-law; four great-grandchildren; one nephew and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sue.

Avis Endreland

Avis L. Endreland, 82, long-time Thompson resident, died early Monday morning (February 16, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice in-patient unit in Mason City where she had been a patient since Friday. Prior to that, she had been hospitalized twice at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City. She had been dismissed from the hospital the most recently on Sunday, February 8. She reentered the hospital on Thursday.

Death was caused by an aneurysm.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 at Zion Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Richard Newgard officiating. Music will be provided by the organist, Eleanor Roper. A ladies quartet comprised of Virjean Skogen, Anne Swenson, Barbara Stenberg and Bonnie Johnson will sing "Children of the Heavenly Father" and a congregational hymn is "The Strife is O’er, the Battle Done."

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Avis Lindy (Lillebo) Endreland was born June 7, 1915, the daughter of John and Edna (Berhow) Lillebo at Kanawha. She was baptized on August 11, 1915. She received her education in a country school and in Belmond, Northwood and Hanlontown. She graduated from Hanlontown High School during 1932.

On January 22, 1936, she was united in marriage to Melvin W. Pech at Primghar. They made their home in Eagle Grove until moving to Thompson during 1944. They became the parents of three children: Carolyn, who died in infancy, Douglas and Linda.

Following the death of her husband in 1945, she was employed as linotype operator by the Thompson Courier - Rake Register for more than 25 years. She was the first site manager for Thompson Congregate Meals.

On May 28, 1949, she was united in marriage to Berge H. Endreland at First Methodist Church in Nashua. They lived in Thompson all of their married life. He died during 1980.

Mrs. Endreland is survived by one son, Douglas and his wife Karen of New Castle, Okla.; one daughter, Linda and her husband Eston Johnson of Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, LaVae Lillebo of Thompson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one daughter in infancy; two brothers, Emery Lillebo and Raynold Lillebo; and one sister, Lois Hammond.
