Raymond M. Olson

Raymond Merlin Olson, 67, died Saturday, February 14, 1998, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

His funeral service was held the afternoon of February 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, Minn. Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiated.

Organist was Cathy Van Hove. The ladies chorus sang "Borning Cry" and "How

Great Thou Art." The congregation sang "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is."Casket bearers were Peter Forrey, Mark Ullestad, Jeffrey Ullestad, Todd Hasche, Rodney Hunt and Ben Hunt.

Interment was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Born May 9, 1930, in Eden Township to Oscar and Ida (Olson) Olsen, Ray was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He remained a lifelong member of Trinity and was active in the church council and taught Sunday School for many years. He graduated from Kiester High School.

May 31, 1952, he married Marion "Pat" Kniefel Hunt in Owatonna, Minn. Ray was also a past member of Thompson Rescue Unit and Thompson Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife Pat of Thompson; five children: Randolph and his wife Naomi of Hastings, Minn., Dwight and his wife Marcia "Kim" of Thompson, Cynthia and her husband Robert Olsen of Leland, Timothy and his wife Julie of Thompson and Colette and her husband Steven Reimann of Leland; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carlyle and his wife Carol of Thompson and David and his wife Cheryl of Owatonna, Minn.; three sisters, Ruth and her husband Phil Forrey of Mankato, Minn., Carolyn Ullestad of Story City and Ramona and her husband Harold Hasche of Doon.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike Asada

Last rites for former Thompson resident, Michael J. Asada, 49, were held Monday at Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua, Wis. Burial was in the Chapel Hill Cemter at LaFarge, Wis.

Asada died February 5, 1998, at NIMHC, MasoN City, from complications of multiple sclerosis.

Marion Hagenson

Funeral service for Marion W. Hagenson, 74, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 26, 1998, at Bethany Lutheran Church Thompson.

Officiating clergy was Rev. Perry Furling with special music provided by Mary Aim Olsen, organist.

Congregational hymns were "‘The Old Rugged Cross", "In The Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."

As a tribute of her grandfather’s love of roses, Heidi Hagenson presented the piano solo "The Rose."

Casket bearers were Gisle "Doc" Bartelson, Al Steenhard, Lynn Ramsey, Kenneth Lein, Scott Swenson and Daniel Thorland.

Honorary Casket bearers included James Harlson, Richard Harlson, John Harlson, Dean Borg, Lyle Borg, David Olson, Marge Harlson and Jan Lein.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Marion W. Hagenson was born September 21, 1923, near Thompson to Percy and Anna (Nolton) Hagenson.

He was baptized in the Methodist Church and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He later joined Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, where he was an active member until his death.

November 5, 1943, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Hanson in Thompson. Hagenson served his country in World War II.

He owned and operated his own business in Thompson until 1980. He then became a full-time rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1989 after a total of 42 years of service to the United States Postal Service.

Marion Hagenson died January 22, 1998, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He loved his family and enjoyed roses and antique tractors.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Thompson; two sons: Dennis Hagenson and his fiancé, Vicki, of Webster City; Allen Hagenson and his wife Wendy of Thompson; his grandchildren: Jessica Hagenson, Seth Hagenson, Scott and Shelley Hagenson, Brandon and Jean Hagenson, and Heidi Hagenson; one great-grandson: P. K. Hagenson; one sister: Mrs. Elmer (Doris) Olson of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Addie Borg.

Clara Larson

Clara M. Larson of Buffalo Center died January 8, 1998, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, at the age of 89 years.

Her funeral service was held Monday morning at Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiated.

Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery . Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of S. S. and Martha (Welland) Varland, Clara Matilda was born April 2, 1908, in Eden Township. She attended rural school at Eden #5 and the Thompson High School.

She married Bert E. Larson at Thompson June 12, 1936. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in June of 1986. In the fall of 1989 the Larsons moved to their present home in Buffalo Center.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda and her husband Don Landheer of Des Moines; one son, James and his wife Jill Larson of buffalo Center; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Varland of Albert Lea; and a brother-in-law, Gus Gustafson of Forest City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bert in 1996; and five sisters and three brothers.

Cora Heath

Last rites for Cora Amanda Heath, a native of Rake, were held Wednesday afternoon, January 7, 1998, at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiated. Casket bearers were Carl Berberich, Ted Erickson, Joel Halvorson, Steve Halvorson, Jeff Heath, Ralph Jahnke, Dick Jensvold and Troy Krinkaus.

Interment was in West Cemetery , Rake.

Following the burial, lunch was served at the Zion Lutheran Church fellowship hall.

Cora was born November 11, 1905, at Rake to Albert and Bertha (Gulbraa) Nesheim. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and lived in Rake most of her life.

She married Glen Heath August 10, 1925. He died February 27, 1956.

Cora entered Parker Oaks Care Center in Winnebago, Minn., December 31, 1997. She died there, Jan. 4, 1998.

She is survived by one son, Glen Heath, Jr. of Mankato, Minn.; two daughters, Lois Halvorson and her husband Jerome, and Sharon Erickson, all of Rake; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Dr. Martin Nesheim and his wife Edna of Duluth, Minn., and two sisters, Della Underdahl of Blue Earth, Minn., and Ione Jones of Lime Springs; along with several dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glen; her son David; four sisters and two brothers.

Aleta Rasche

Funeral service for Aleta Rasche, 81, of Fairmont, Minn., mother of Michele Thompson of Rake, will be held Friday, January 2, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont, Minn. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery , Fairmont.

Mrs. Rasche died Sunday evening, December 28, 1997, at her home in Fairmont.

Survivors include one son, Michael James Larson of Mankato, Minn.; one daughter, Michele Thompson and her husband Richard of Rake; stepdaughters Sharon Roe and husband John of St. Paul, Minn., and Marilyn Wessels and husband Duane of Albert Lea, Minn.; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William Rasche; three daughters, Leslie Jean Theobald, Nancy Sue Roberts and Patricia Ann Hopf.

Johanna Nelson

The oldest member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, Johanna Secilia Nelson, died Tuesday, December 23, 1997, at the Lake Mills Care Center. She was 102 years of age.

Her funeral service was conducted the morning of December 26 at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Officiating clergy was Pastor Perry Fruhling with Mary Ann Olsen serving as organist.

A trio of Lavonne Grunhovd, Joan Christianson and Karen Askeland sang "How Great Thou Art" and Kathy Nelson sang "Jeg Er Saa Glad Hver Yulekveld." Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "Good Christian Friends, Rejoice."

Honorary casket bearers were Johanna’s great-grandchildren: Tony Nelson, Derek Nelson, Molly Nelson, Jason Brekken, Grant Brekken, Peter Brekken, Jacob Brekken, Lisa Nelson and Taylor Nelson.

The casket was carried by Mike Shivers, Ted Hovda, Dick Langerud, Terry Steinmetz, Mike Swenson, Jim Moen, Steven Nelson, Gary Nelson and Dave Brekken.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Mittelstadt Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Johan and Martha Opsal, Johanna was born November 8, 1895, on a small island north of Stavanger called Fogn, Norway. She was confirmed at Finney.

At the age of 18, she came to America. She married Peter J. Nelson, who was also from Stavanger, Norway, in 1918. They were parents to one son, Leonard J. Nelson. They lived on a farm by Thompson for 16 years and in 1941 purchased a farm southwest of Lake Mills.

Johanna belonged to Bethany Lutheran Church at Thompson all her adult life. She was active in the ladies auxiliary and circle until the past 12 years.

Survivors include her son Leonard and his wife Florence Nelson of Leland; three grandchildren, Steven and his wife Kathy nelson, Gary and his wife Julie Nelson, all of Leland, and Lori and her husband Dave Brekken of Lake Mills; and nine great-grandchildren as listed as honorary casket bearers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Peter on February 12, 1977; and her sister Hanna Hovda.

Art Graham

Last rites for Arthur L. Graham, 55, of Rake were held December 4 at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake. Pastor Jennifer Edinger officiated.

Burial was in West Cemetery , Rake.

Graham died December 1, 1997, at the United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

Born October 18, 1942, in Algona, he was the son of Dwight and Olga (Holm) Graham. He married Ruth Sanke August 19, 1965, in Blue Earth.

He was employed at Forest City at Foresters and Winnebago Industries. He was presently employed in the maintenance department of Seneca Foods in Blue Earth.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Graham of Rake; three sons, Ronald Graham and wife Lori of Fort Collins, Colo, Mark Graham and his wife Michelle of Mankato and David Graham of Iowa City; three granddaughters; one sister, LaVonne Runkle of Humboldt; and his mother-in-law, Waneta Sankey of Winnebago, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Millie Morello

Funeral service for Thompson native Millie Morello, 91, a longtime Omaha pianist, was held October 17 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Omaha.

Ms. Morello died October 14, 1997, of kidney failure.

She was born in 1906 to Dr. Ed and Sophie Stewart. Dr. Stewart was the first dentist in Thompson and remained so for 35 years until his death in 1943.

Lillie started playing piano with no lessons by the age of nine. She started playing professionally at 12 years of age for church, in school and the background music for silent movies at the theatre in Thompson and small towns in the area.

She married Albert Mart in 1929. He had a truck farm, 10 acres, on the road to the cemetery in Thompson.

Moving to Omaha in 1942, Lillie played the piano professionally in various lounges.

She married Mac Mcabe in 1955. He died in 1956. She then married Lester Morello in 1966 and he died a few years ago.

In June of 1997, Lillie was honored for being a Methodist for 75 years and for belonging to the Eastern Star for 73 years.

At the time of her death, she was still playing piano at church and senior functions, up until a month before she died.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Carlson of Omaha; two sons, Donald Mart of Loveland, Colo., and Raymond Mart of Omaha; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

All three of her brothers have died within the last few years. A younger brother died at the age of 12 of a brain tumor.
