Jake Risius

Last rites for Jake Risius, 92, were held Monday afternoon, November 24, 1997, at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. Rev. Glenn Smith officiated.

Pianist was Arlene Endreland. The congregation sang "Amazing Grace," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Good Night and Good Morning."

Honorary casket bearers included Ronald Boettcher, George Faber, Vernon Jacobson, Herman Thompson and Arnold Van Gerpen.

The casket was carried by Dale Anderson, Ron Anderson, Elvin Haugen, Glendon Matheson, Mark Murra and Peter Van Gerpen.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery , Buffalo Center. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The son of John and Alice (Meyer) Risius, Jake was born April 27,1905, on a farm near Iowa Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka. He completed eighth grade in a country school.

December 20, 1927, he was married to Annie Rippentrop at First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. Together they farmed near Lakota, Stevens and Frost and for 42 years by Rake until they moved into town in 1977. Risius enjoyed visiting with his friends and especially his family.

He died Thursday, November 20, 1997, at United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minn.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Annie Risius of Rake; three sons, Marvin and his wife Frances of State College, Penna., Norman and his wife Mavis of Lake Mills, and Larry and his wife Kathy of Lafayette, Colo.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Dena Gable of Spencer; and one brother-in-law, George Rippentrop of Buffalo Center; several nieces, nephews and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; two brothers; and one infant brother.

Ella Curley

Last rites for longtime Thompson resident Ella Curley were held Monday, November 3, at United Methodist Church in Thompson.

Rev. Wendy Trone officiated. Bruce Wubben was soloist and Eleanor Roper was organist. Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

The casket was carried by Dick Johnson, Arlan Steen, Allan Steen, Steve Gacke, Darwin Adams and Larry Miexner.

Interment was in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery , Crystal Lake.

Ella was born August 5, 1916, at Crystal Lake to Frank and Pearl (Volding) Smith.

She married Ethan Curley at Jackson, Minn., April 11, 1936. After they were married they made Thompson their home.

Mrs. Curley worked as a waitress in several restaurants and also worked at Stitchcraft. She was a member of Thompson United Methodist Church.

In October of 1996, she entered the Westview Care Center in Britt where she died October 31, 1997.

She is survived by her children: Rosella and husband Sidney Wubben of Thompson; Gwendolyn and her husband David Farrell of Olathe, Kans.; Janet and her husband John Paulson of Valley City, N. Dak.; Sandra and her husband Bernie Korsa of Garner; Harold and his wife JoAnn Curley of Garner; Bob and his wife Denise Curley of Minneapolis, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four stepchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Ethan on February 10, 1964; two step-sons; three brothers; one sister; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

C.E. Judd

Funeral service for Charles Edward (C. E.) Judd, 88, was held Saturday afternoon, November 8, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

Officiating clergy was Pastor Perry Fruhling.

Special music was provided by Chris Hill, organist; Mike Holstad, soloist; and Mary Ann Olsen, accompanist for "The Navy Hymn." Congregational hymns were "Beautiful Savior," "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Kent, Kurk, Todd and Megan Erickson; Jacquelyn Morgan-Pattinson; and David, Mark, Larry and Darwin Solberg.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Military rites were performed by Thompson Veterans Color Guard.

C. E. was born March 17, 1909, to Andrew and May (Miller) Judd in Green County. He was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson and grew up on a farm near Paton where he graduated from Paton High School. He was also graduated from Iowa State College in Ames. He worked as a County Extension Director in the Iowa Counties of Story, Wayne, Boone and Winnebago.

During World War II, he served as Lieutenant in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. He taught the veteran’s agricultural classes at Lakota and farmed near Thompson.

February 12, 1934, he was married to Theo Norman at her family home near Paton.

C. E. was committed to improving the lives of the people in the communities where he lived by being an active member in many organization, most recently being the Area Agency on Aging and Young at Heart. In the churches where he worshipped he used his talents in the areas of education, administration and youth and senior ministries. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

He died November 5, 1997, at his home in rural Thompson at 88 years of age.

Survivors include his wife Theo; three daughters and their husbands, Harriet and Darrell Morgan of Thompson, Majory and Lowell Solberg of Forest City and Judith and Robert Erickson of Cooper Mountain, Colo.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Underwood of Boone; one brother, Robert Judd of Urbana, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and one grandson.

Floyd E. Charbonneau Jr.

Floyd "Pete" E. Charbonneau Jr., 76, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

F u n e r a l services were held at 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Military graveside services were conducted by the Britt VFW and American Legion posts.

Pete, the son of Floyd and Lucy Boutilier Charbonneau Sr., was born Jan. 23 1924, in Ottawa, Ill. At the age of five he moved with his family to Britt. He received his education in the Britt school system and graduated from Britt High School in 1943.

Following graduation from high school, he joined the United States Navy and served on board the USS Bolivar in the Pacific.

Pete was united in marriage with Lois M. Deibler on July 23, 1945, at the Little Brown Church. Following his discharge he returned to Britt and attended Britt Junior College. He was employed with his father and later took over the filling station and farmed.

Pete enjoyed all sports, especially watching his grandsons participate. He also enjoyed trapping and hunting and loved to travel. Pete was a member of the Britt VFW and American Legion posts. He has also served on the Britt City Council.

Pete is survived by his wife, Lois of Britt; two sons, Mitch Charbonneau of Britt and William "Mike" Charbonneau and his wife, Janice, and their sons, Justin and John, of Britt; one brother, Roy Charbonneau and his wife, Lillian, of Britt; two sisters, Eva Schleuger of Britt and Evelyn Smidt of Britt; and one brother-in-law, Milton Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, one sister and two brothers-in-law.

Roger Thompson

Roger L. Thompson of Lake Mills died October 22, 1997, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was 64 years of age.

Last rites were held the morning of October 25 at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills.

Officiating clergy was Rev. Roger Dykstra. Organist was Dennis Thompson.

Casket bearers were Harris Honsey, Bob Schreiner, Marlo Durby, Richard Gansei, Don Holst, Bill Bakken, Derald Kloster, Harlan Evenson, Gordy Cavett, Gene Haugo, Stan Stover and Ronald Jacobs.

Interment was in Salem Memorial Cemetery with military rites by Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235.

The son of C. Myron and Pearl (Hanna) Thompson, Roger was born September 10, 1933, at Eldora. He graduated from Lake Mills High School and served his country in the United States Army.

June 10, 1955, he married Norma Anderson at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

He worked as an installment loan officer for 35 years with the bank now known as Liberty Bank & Trust.

Survivors include his wife Norma of Lake Mills; three daughters, Nancy and her husband Jeff Heinke of San Antonio, Tex., Julie and her husband Kim Trebil of Clear Lake and Lisa and her husband Mike Farland of Shorewood, Minn.; five grandchildren, Lauren and Andrew Heinke, Mason and Christian Trebil and Blake Farland; and many nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Nina Trebil.

Norbert Dorow

Norbert Dorow died at age 79 in Fargo, ND, April 9, 2000. He was Winnebago County Extension Director from 1949 to the mid-1950's.

Dorow was born near Ventura. There he attended St. John's Lutheran parochial elementary school, graduated from Ventura High School in 1939 and from Iowa State University in 1949 with a degree in agriculture. He received a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1959.

From 1959 to 1990 Dorow was on the staff of North Dakota State University. For two years he did research and teaching in agricultural economics, after which he served as specialist in agricutural and rural policies for the NDSU Extension Service.

In 1960 Dorow married Mildred Jacobson in St. Paul; their home was in Fargo during their entire wedded life. He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter, two daughters-in-law, three grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

During his career and retirement Dorow volunteered at Hope Lutheran Church, Refugee Resettlement, Churches United for the Homeless, and Meals on Wheels, and was a member of Kiwanis.

Nieman Quisling

Funeral service for Nieman Quisling, 89, of Lake Mills was held Thursday, June 8, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. He died June 5, 2000, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Reverends Sara Beth Akre and Roger Dykstra officiated. Burial was in Salem Memorial Cemetery.

Nieman Harris Quisling, the son of Thomas and Arme (Aasland) Quisling, was born March 24, 1911, in Worth County. He attended school at Lake Mills.

Oct. 29, 1933, he was united in marriage to Berdie Jordahl at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Quisling farmed in the Lake Mills area for 21 years, then went into the insurance business as manager of Winnebago Mutual for 30 years.

He was active in Salem Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday School teacher, usher and president of Brotherhood. Other groups he was involved in included the Lake Mills Ambulance, Lions Club, I.O.O.F., State Board of Mutual Insurance Companies and Legal Council.

Quisling enjoyed visiting with people, especially his grandchildren. The couple enjoyed winters in Arizona for 18 years. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and he and his wife enjoyed playing cards with their friends.

Survivors include his wife, Berdie, of Lake Mills; three daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Roger Fjelstad of Lake Mills, Janice and her husband, Jerry Kallheim of Madison Lake, Minn., and Judy and her husband, Tom Lawrence of Billings, Mont. six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers, George Quisling of Lake Mills and Walter Quisling of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister, Mabel Matthews of Lake Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beatrice Charlson; and two brothers, Alvin and Obert.

Mearld L. Pierce

Last rites for Mearld L. Pierce, 90, of Lake Mills, were held Saturday afternoon, July 1, 2000, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills. Rev. Jeanne Martin officiated with burial at Sunnyside Cemetery , Lake Mills.

Mearld Leslie Pierce the son of Clair and Gertrude (Hoffman) Pierce, was born March 13, 1910, at Boone. When he was four, his parents moved six miles south of Kiester, Minn., where they farmed and he grew up with his brothers and sisters.

On September 26, 1935, Mearld married Elizabeth Stevens at the Church parsonage in Kiester. They bought the family farm and raised their children on it.

Mearld loved his farming life of 35 years and retired in 1981 to Lake Mills. He belonged to the Eagles in Albert Lea, Minn., and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Both Mearld and Elizabeth moved into Mills Harbour in December of 1999. Mearld passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Lake Mills; four children, Lanny Pierce Sr. and his wife Sally of Joice; Darrell Pierce and his wife Sandy of Sacramento, Calif., Shirley Mason and her husband Skip of Bonanza, Oreg., and Richard Pierce and wife Darlene of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Lanny Pierce Jr., Michael Pierce, Nichole Pierce, Dawn Madson, Jennifer (Mason) Heckman, Darla Pierce and Doreen Pierce; three step-grandchildren: Curtis Leverton, Christen Funk and Lance Hartkopp; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nadine Morgan of Seattle, Wash.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Larry; two brothers, Forest Pierce and Clair Pierce; and one sister, Maxine Ericson.

Gladys Engebretson

Funeral service for Gladys Viola Engebretson, 89, was held Monday morning at Bethel Lutheran Church, Vinje. Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiated.

Margaret Nesje was organist for the service and Elaine Rebelein sang "I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry" and "Precious Lord." Congregational hymn was "Beneath The Cross of Jesus."

The casket was carried by Fred Engebretson, Jon Folven, Gary Brue, Scott Engebretson, Todd Anthony and Chuck Engebretson. Interment was in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.

The daughter of Ole and Anna (Tweed) Brue, Gladys was born April 13, 1908, in Pierre, S. Dak. When she was an infant, her family moved to rural Joice. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1927 and taught school for several years in rural Winnebago County.

She married Gayler A. Engebretson in Scarville June 26, 1931. The couple moved to a farm west of Vinje in 1943 where she lived the remainder of her live. Gayler died July 1, 1997. A longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church, she served faithfully in numerous capacities. She was a former 4-H leader.

Gladys Engebretson died the evening of December 31, at her daughter’s home in LaPorte, Ind.

She is survived by one son, Rodney and his wife Barbara Engebretson of LaCrosse, Wis.; two daughters, Lorraine and her husband Jack Bunce of LaPorte, Ind., and Marcia and her husband Ray Kyrsh of Elk Grove, Ill.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Brue of Lake Mills; two sisters, Maxine Nelson of Northwood and Genevieve Folven of Albert Lea, Minn., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gayler and three sisters.
