Dale Peterson

Funeral service for Dale Erwin Peterson, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills.

Officiating clergy will be Rev. Roger Dykstra and Rev. Sara Beth Akre.

Casket bearers include Gorden Anderson, Sr., Gorden Anderson, Jr., Elmer Trostheim, Don Holst, Don Storby and Geoffrey Anderson.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson. Mittlestadt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Peterson was the son of Elmer and Dora (Mikkelson) Peterson. He was born July 14, 1921, at Forest City.

Survivors include his children: Sharon and her husband Howard Abendroth of Lake Mills, Judy and her husband Donald Hengesteg of Lake Mills; and Renae and her husband Ken Fong of Dundee, Oregon; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Mavis and her husband Harold Roberson of Payson, Ariz.; sisters-in-law: Gloria Peterson of Hudson, Mich., Vera Peterson of Britt and Marie Peterson of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Marvin, Ernest and Elwood Peterson.

Carolyn J. Holtan

Carolyn Jane Holtan, 65, of Core, W. Va., died Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W. Va.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery , rural Lake Mills.

Carolyn Jane Holtan, daughter of Willis and Muriel (Higgins) Rees, was born May 31, 1934, in Mason City

She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1954 and was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. In 1989 she received a master's degree in Public History from West Virginia University where she worked on the Frederick Douglas Papers project in the History Department.

She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Core W.Va.

A lifelong learner, she had a love of reading, art, nature, history, solitude and the old-and simple things in life.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 43 years, Boyd D. Holtan, Core, W. VA, three children, Leslie and spouse, Thomas Parsons, Jonesboro, Ariz., Daniel B. Holtan, Hebbronville, Texas, and Rebecca and spouse, Major Jeffrey Sinclair, Fayetteville N.C.; and three grandchildren, Emily, Sarah and Seth Parsons.

Carolyn was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Rees.

Mittelstadt Funeral Home Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements, (515) 592-0221.

Amanda Larson

Last rites for Amanda B. Larson, formerly of Lake Mills, were held Saturday afternoon at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville. Burial was in the church cemetery there.

Mrs. Larson died February 25, 1998, at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, N. Dak. She was 96 years of age.

Amanda Larson was born September 14, 1901, in Norway Township, Winnebago County, to Carl O. and Anna (Holstad) Thompson.

She married George A. Larson October 4, 1922, and the couple farmed east of Scarville their entire married life.

He died in 1976 and she moved to Lake Mills in 1978. She entered the Evergreens Assisted Living Center in Moorhead, Minn., in the fall of 1993.

Survivors include one daughter, Zona Mathison, and her husband Matt of Moorhead, Minn.; two grandsons; and one sister, Alice Medlang of Buffalo Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ole, Oscar, Albert and John Thompson; and three sisters, Hilma Thompson, Ida Johnson and Clara Larson-Westrum.

Ruth I. Becker

Funeral service for Ruth I. Becker of Blue Earth, Minn., was held Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard. Father John Thomas was celebrant. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery , Lakota, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Henry and Etta (Ennen) Olthoff, Ruth was born August 3, 1918, on a farm just north of Lakota.

She married Raymond Becker October 24, 1942, in Bethany, Missouri. They farmed in Kossuth County until 1972 when they moved to Lakota. In 1973 she moved to Blue Earth, Minn., where sheresided until her death. She died November 9, 1998, at United Hospital, at the age of 80.

She is survived by her son Roger Becker and by Shirley Becker, both of Lakota; five grandchildren; one sister, Vera Becker of Buffalo Center; one brother, Harold Olthoff and his wife Virginia of Buffalo Center; and her former husband, Raymond Becker of Lakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Mervin Olthoff; and a son, Albert Becker.

Reka Weiler

Funeral services for Reka Weiler were held Saturday, April 1, 2000, at the school gymnasium in Lakota, Iowa.

Reka Weiler was born September 21, 1905, in Heerenland, East Friesland, Germany, to Robert and Jana (Wiegmann) Siemens. The family immigrated to America in 1913 and settled in Ledyard, Iowa. On July 6, 1937, Reka was united in marriage to William Weiler at Blue Earth, Minnesota. They made their home at Elmore, Minnesota, later moving to the Lakota, Iowa and Lamberton areas, then to her present in Lakota.

Reka passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home. She was 94.

Reka is survived by one brother Joe Siemens of Barrett, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers Albert Siemens and Robert Siemens, and one sister Katie Pruismann.

Kenneth Bauman

Funeral service for Kenneth Baumann, 68, of Lakota was held Tuesday afternoon, June 30, 1998, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lakota. Interment was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Baumann died June 27, 1998, at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato, Minn. He was 68.

Survivors include his wife Helen of Lakota; five children; three brothers; three sisters; and 10 grandchildren.

Donna Chose

Funeral service for Donna M. Chose, 58, of Kiester, Minn., was held Tuesday morning at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Kiester. The Rev. Dean Fodness officiated. Burial was in Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs. Chose died December 14, 1997, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit at Mason City.

She is survived by her mother, Senora Brunsvold of Lake Mills; two sons, Kevin Chose and Jeff Chose; one granddaughter, Taylor Chose; and one step-granddaughter, Krystal Benson, all of Kiester.

She was preceded in death by her father; her husband and grandparents.

Dean Mutschler

Last rites for Dean E. Mutschler of Kiester, Minn., were held February 14 at Grace United Methodist Church, Kiester. Pastor Elaine Shelby officiated with interment in Fairview Cemetery , Kiester.

Mutschler, 68, died February 11, 1998, at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minn., due to a massive heart attack.

He was born January 6, 1930, to Albert G. and May S. (Anderson) Mutschler in Kiester. He lived all his life in the Kiester area and attended rural country school and graduated from Kiester High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army. June 5, 1955, he married Marjorie Adams in Buffalo Center. The couple farmed until his semi-retirement in 1993 and they continued to live on the farm.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Kiester; one son, Robert and his wife Edith Mutschler of Bricelyn, Minn.; two grandsons, Perry Mutschler and Marcus Mutschler; three step-grandsons, Harold and his wife Heidi Albrant, David Albrant and Chris Albrant and his fiancee Rhonda; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Velma Doll of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Virgil and his wife Patricia Mutschler of Downey, Calif.; his father-in-law, Harry Adams of Lake Mills; one nephew and seven nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Dale; grandson Robert Dale; and brother-in-law Ronald Doll.

Leland R. Pearson

Last rites for Leland Rodney Pearson, 63, husband of former resident Glennis Sandum, were held Nov. 26 at First United Methodist Church in Pierre, S. Dak.

Pearson was born December 28, 1933, to Rodney and Mabel (Gesche) Pearson. He grew up and attended school at Frost. On January 8, 1956, he married Glennis Sandum. He served in the U. S. Navy.

Pearson died at his home Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997.

Survivors include his wife Glennis; two sons, Jay and his wife Debbie and their two children; and Todd and his wife Kay and their three children; four brothers; two sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rodney and Mabel Pearson; and infant brother Myron; brother Reed and sister Irene.

Joseph B. Norwalk

Funeral service for Joseph Benjamin Nowak, 57, was held Saturday, January 10, 1998, at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

Officiants were Loren Quick and Dennis Falb.

Casket bearers were Joe Badje, Phil Benn, Bill Hansen, Bob Hanson, Brad Quade and Bob Stewart.

Interment was in West Cemetery , Rake.

Nowak was born May 30, 1940, at Winnebago, Minn., to Joseph and Louise (Hurd) Nowak. He grew up in Frost and was educated at the Frost school.

He worked for several area farmers during his life and also worked at the Rake Cooperative Elevator.

He died Wednesday, January 7, 1998, at his home.

Survivors include three sons, David and his wife Sherry Caddogap of Arkansas; Tim of Alden, Minn., and Dan of Rake; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents, Cassie and Emma Johnson; and one infant daughter.

Vance Holland

Former area Thompson resident Vance Holland, 45, was killed in a one-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon west of Forest City. Holland was driving north on 110th Avenue when he lost control of his pick-up and slid off the road. The truck rolled at least once and came to rest upside down.

Holland was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the truck, his nephew Joshua Holland, 6, was taken by Forest City Ambulance to NIMHC, Mason City, and kept overnight for observation.

Holland’s funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Forest City.

Charlotte Stenberg

Last rites were held Friday, June 12, 1998, for longtime Thompson resident Charlotte Stenberg, 99. The service was held at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating.

Comfort music was provided by Mary Ann Olsen, organist, and vocalists Amy Thorland and Rev. Fruhling who sang "Weary Now I Go To Rest" and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow." Congregational hymns were "Crown Him With Many Crowns" and "How Great Thou Art."

Pall bearers were Dennis Appelhons, Ken Stenberg, John Nepstad, Rick Helps, Tim Larson and Tom Larson.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Henry and Lydia (Vikingstad) Stenberg, Charlotte was born April 20, 1899, in Ellsworth. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

She attended Waldorf College, Forest City, and graduated from Iowa State. Miss Stenberg taught school in the Thompson area for many years.

She was very active in the Thompson Senior Center, the church circle and BLCW.

In 1994, she entered Lake Mills Care Center where she died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at 99 years of age.

She is survived by two brothers, Elmer Stenberg of Thompson and George Stenberg of Berkeley, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Cornelius Stenberg; and one sister, Eva Bravick.

C.E. Judd

Funeral service for Charles Edward (C. E.) Judd, 88, was held Saturday afternoon, November 8, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

Officiating clergy was Pastor Perry Fruhling.

Special music was provided by Chris Hill, organist; Mike Holstad, soloist; and Mary Ann Olsen, accompanist for "The Navy Hymn." Congregational hymns were "Beautiful Savior," "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Kent, Kurk, Todd and Megan Erickson; Jacquelyn Morgan-Pattinson; and David, Mark, Larry and Darwin Solberg.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral home in charge of arrangements. Military rites were performed by Thompson Veterans Color Guard.

C. E. was born March 17, 1909, to Andrew and May (Miller) Judd in Green County. He was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson and grew up on a farm near Paton where he graduated from Paton High School. He was also graduated from Iowa State College in Ames. He worked as a County Extension Director in the Iowa Counties of Story, Wayne, Boone and Winnebago.

During World War II, he served as Lieutenant in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. He taught the veteran’s agricultural classes at Lakota and farmed near Thompson.

February 12, 1934, he was married to Theo Norman at her family home near Paton.

C. E. was committed to improving the lives of the people in the communities where he lived by being an active member in many organization, most recently being the Area Agency on Aging and Young at Heart. In the churches where he worshipped he used his talents in the areas of education, administration and youth and senior ministries. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

He died November 5, 1997, at his home in rural Thompson at 88 years of age.

Survivors include his wife Theo; three daughters and their husbands, Harriet and Darrell Morgan of Thompson, Majory and Lowell Solberg of Forest City and Judith and Robert Erickson of Cooper Mountain, Colo.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Underwood of Boone; one brother, Robert Judd of Urbana, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and one grandson.
