LETTS, Iowa -- Services for Richard B. "Brett" Thurston, of Letts, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery , Wilton. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton, and one hour before the service Wednesday at the church. Mr. Thurston died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Ipsco Steel, Montpelier. He was employed as a forklift operator at Hagerty Brothers, East Peoria, Ill. He was born April 23, 1964, in Davenport. He married Leslie Fuller in 1995 in Wilton. He had served in the Navy. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Amber Wilhelm, Sterling, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Courtney Salek, Letts; his parents, Bourke and Carla Thurston, Wilton; and brothers, Rick, Grandview, and Vance, Wilton.

Einar Boardsen
CAMANCHE, Iowa -- Services for Einar Boardsen, of 95 Cedar Heights Court, formerly of 1863 Glendale Road, Clinton, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery , Clinton, with military services by the Clinton AMVETS. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home. Mr. Boardsen died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at his home. He was employed 16 years as an accountant at Clinton Corn Processing Co. and 18 years as an accountant at Carstensen Freight Lines. He retired in 1984. He was born March 5, 1926, in Laukhella, Norway. He married Phyllis Kemmer in 1948 in Morrison, Ill. During World War II, he served in the Navy. Memorials may be made to the church or American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Vicki Warren, Green Lake, Wis., Debra Brandmeyer, of the Quad-Cities, and Ann Sperry, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; sons, John, Waterloo, and Eric, Louisville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Chris Boysen, Clinton; and a brother, Harry, Waterloo.

Clara Todd
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Clara E. Todd, of Ainsworth, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Visitation is 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery . Mrs. Todd worked five years at Keller Ladder and five years at Eagle Signal, Davenport. Clara Waddell was born March 17, 1915, in Huron. She married Gordon Todd in 1933 in Wapello. He died in 1985. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Fulton, Ainsworth, and Mona Wilhlem, Forsyth, Mont.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Snyder, Davenport.

Lula Ross
MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. -- Services for Lula M. Ross, of Rockford, formerly of Mount Carroll, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery , Mount Carroll. Mrs. Ross died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at St. Anne Center, Rockford. She was employed at an insurance company in Freeport and then worked at Carroll County Farm Bureau. She also worked at Production Credit Association and alternated terms with her husband, Frank, as Carroll County treasurer for 32 years. Lula Gump was born July 19, 1903, in the family farm in Freedom Township, Carroll County. She married Frank Ross in 1925 in Mount Carroll. He died in 1960. Survivors include daughters, Betsey Rohner, Stockton, Calif., Roberta Montgomery, Rockford, and Catherine Randecker, Mount Carroll; sons, Carl, Bakersfield, Calif., and Clifford, Rockford; 18 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Barbara Barnhart
FULTON, Ill. -- Barbara R. Barnhart, of 1309 4th Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the Alverno Health Care Facility, Clinton, Iowa. Private services will be at Fulton Township Cemetery , Fulton. No visitation will be held. Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton, is in charge of arrangements. Barbara Ramseth was born June 20, 1913, in Chicago. She married Lyle Barnhart in 1939 in Chicago. He died in 1997. Memorials may be made to the care facility. Survivors include sons, Byron, Fulton, and Warren, San Diego; and three grandchildren.

Henry Johnson
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Henry A. "Hank" Johnson, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 1-3 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. He had worked as a set-up man at the former J. I. Case Co. plant, Rock Island, for 40 years, retiring in 1983. He had been a member of the Rock Island Auxiliary Police for 46 years, rising to the rank of Captain. He was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Opheim, Ill. He married Jeri Sanders in 1944 in Chicago. Memorials may be made to the Sunday School or Altar Guild Accessory Fund of the church. Survivors include his wife, Jeri; a daughter, Gerry Cook, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a son, Henry, Rock Island; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and sisters, Judith Strange and Lillian Crew, both of Moline.

Frieda Kleppe
TIPTON, Iowa -- Frieda E. Heisch Kleppe, of Tipton, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home, Tipton. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ, Tipton. Burial will be in Tipton Masonic Cemetery . Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. She was a homemaker. Frieda Heisch was born Nov. 3, 1902, in Rochester. She married Fred Kleppe in 1920 in Tipton. He died in 1965. memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Bequeaith, Stanwood; sons, Donn Kleppe, Stanwood, and Darrel Kleppe, Goose Lake; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harry Heisch, Tipton.

John Buikema
MORRISON, Ill. -- John H. Buikema, a resident of Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the nursing home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Reformed Church, Morrison, preceded by a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service at the church. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery , Morrison. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Morrison Chapel of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison. He was a farmer in the rural Morrison and Argo Fay areas, retiring when he moved to Fulton. He was born Nov. 4, 1912, in Morrison. He married Hazel Lantinga in 1938 in Garden Plain. She died in 1986. Memorials may be made to the church or the Resthave Nursing Home Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Picolotti, Savanna; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sisters, Stella Buikema and Janet Tichler, both of Morrison, and Ella Pruis, Sterling; and a brother, Renzie, Morrison.

Jessie Forbes
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Jessie M. Forbes, of Muscatine, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery . Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She had worked at Webbers Button Factory in the packing department before retiring. Jessie Syphrit was born April 6, 1912. She married William Forbes in 1932 in Rock Island. A memorial has been established in her memory. Survivors include a son, LeRoy Forbes, East Moline; daughters, Marilyn Epperly, Mary Kilburn, and Barbara Kilburn, all of Muscatine; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren- and six great-great-grandcildren.

Mary Berg
DAVENPORT -- Funeral Services for Mary H. Berg, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Davenport. The Rev. Frederick Schuster will officiate. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Mrs. Berg died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Davenport. Mary Leedom was born Nov. 2, 1912, in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Guy and Edna Leedom. She married Henry H. Berg in 1929, in Davenport. He preceded her in death May 2, 1975. She was a member of the church. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include grandsons, Mark Johns, Bettendorf, and Jeff Johns and his wife, Viki, East Troy, Wis.; and great-great-grandchildren, Christine, Jennifer, Ryan and Danielle Johns. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Clella and Fay Johns; a daughter, Norma Jean Berg; and sisters, Linda Alexander, Betty Bartels and Fern Downs.

Robert L. 'Bob' Mix
ERIE, Ill. -- Robert L. "Bob" Mix, of Silvis, formerly of Erie, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Erie, where he was a former member. Burial will be in Erie Cemetery . Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary at 6 p.m. at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Mr. Mix was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Erie, the son of Julius and Edith (Rollo) Mix. He married Renie Ballow on Sept. 10, 1949, in Bethel, Ohio. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from farming in 1989. He had also worked part-time for the former International Harvester, East Moline, and Erie Casein Co. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Colona, a member of the Whiteside County Farm Services Board, and was a former Boy Scout leader. He had driven a school bus for Erie schools and had taught CCD classes at St. Ambrose. He was one of the founders of the St. Ambrose section of the Erie Cemetery . Memorial may be made to the church, the Arthritis Foundation or the American Heart Association. Survivors include his wife; daughters and son-in-law, Deborah Pope, East Moline, Madonna Thomas, Clinton, and Linda and Maurice Dierks, Eldridge, Iowa; sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Kathryn Mix, Erie, Kenneth and Kimber Mix, Erie, and Brian and Cindy Mix, Moline; 18 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean Seger, Erie, Doris and Mick Kromrey, Winder Haven, Fla., and Mary and Kenny Thompson, Erie; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Mix, Coal Valley. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Mix.

Effie Nelson
CAMBRIDGE, Ill. -- Effie A. Nelson, formerly of Cambridge, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cambridge United Methodist Church. The Dr. Garry Gromley will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery , Cambridge. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services Inc., Cambridge. Effie A. Liggett was born Jan. 15, 1905, near Alexis, the daughter of James Wesley and Elsie (Stuck) Liggett. She was educated in Biggsville area schools. Her marriage to William R. Nelson took place on March 6, 1923, in Fairfield, Iowa. The couple moved to Cambridge in 1930. He died April 4, 1970. She was a member of the Cambridge United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and was a former member of the Cambridge American Legion Auxiliary. She had been an active member of the EV Card Club of rural Cambridge. Mrs. Nelson was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, baking, playing cards and visiting with relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to Cambridge United Methodist Church or the Cambridge Fire Protection District. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Reed, Cambridge, Joyce and Lars Hemmingson, Walker, Minn., and Carol and Robert Sears, Bellevue, Iowa; a son and daughter-in-law, J. William and Eyvonne Nelson, Atkinson; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Orphabelle Pequignot, Brighton, Iowa. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Dennis Stein
BETTENDORF -- Funeral services for Dennis G. Stein, of Bettendorf, will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. The Rev. James Opgenorth will officiate. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Pennington Cemetery , Sigourney, Iowa. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Stein died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Dennis Gaylord Stein was born March 3, 1948, in Sigourney, the son of Gaylord J. and Eva (Hartgrave) Stein. He was a graduate of Hamilton School of Business where he received an associates degree in business technology. He was an independent trucker and had worked for several area auto dealerships shuttling cars between dealers. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the family. Survivors include a daughter, Dena Marie Stein; his mother, Eva Stein, both of Bettendorf; aunts, Betsy Kiefer, Montezuma, Iowa, Bonnie Gilbert, Lavella, Iowa, Donna Hough, Eddyville, Iowa, Judith Ann Ellis, Little Rock, Ark., Geneva Winn, Pat Reynolds and Marjorie Jones, off of Sigourney; uncles, Kenneth Stein, Hedrick, Iowa, and Stanley Stein, Tupelo, Miss.; a special friend, Vera Stein, Bettendorf; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father; his grandparents; aunts, Roberta Linder and Gennette Graff; and uncles, Clayborn and Junior Stein. Dennis will be remembered as a great father and son and a wonderful friend to many. He will be deeply missed.

CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Doris E. Sorensen, of Clinton, Iowa, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory, Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery . Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Mrs. Sorensen died Saturday, Oct. 2, l999, at the Sterling House, Clinton. She had worked as a switchboard operator and in the Admitting Office at the former Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton, for many years. Doris Turner was born July 6, l924, in Ladysmith, Wis. She married Carsten Sorensen in 1945 in Key West, Fla. He died in 1992. Survivors include daughters; Jude Golinvaux, Fulton, Ill., Linda Lueders, Clinton, and Pam Kremer, Clinton; eight grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Otto, Camanche, Pearl Perryman, Clinton, Charlotte Temple, Fulton, Ill., and Rosie Jensen, New Liberty; and brothers, Charles Turner, Camanche, Robert Turner, Minneapolis, James Turner, Clinton, and Gerald Turner, Las Vegas.

Ella Anderson
EAST MOLINE -- Ella L. Anderson, of Forest Hill Health & Rehab Center, East Moline, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill. Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at First Christian Church, Moline. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. She was employed as a cashier at the Eagles Food Stores, Moline, for 10 years, retiring in 1975. Ella Bahr was born March 5, 1914, in Ireton, Iowa. She married Arnold Anderson in l930 in Easterville, Iowa. He died in 1982. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church and to the Forest Hill Health & Rehab Center, East Moline. Survivors include a daughter, Twyla (spouse Steven) Rice of Bettendorf and 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
