MORRISON, Ill. -- Services for Vivian L. Rick, of Greenville, S.C., formerly of Morrison, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grove Hill Cemetery , Morrison. The body was cremated. Mrs. Rick died March 2, 1999, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison, is in charge of arrangements. She had worked at Climco Corp., Morrison, and International Harvester, Rock Falls. Vivian Meyer was born Nov. 7, 1913, in Portland Township. She married Lavern "Jack" Rick in 1971. He died in 1974. Survivors include a son, Gary, Greenville; three grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.

Florence Kasowski
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Florence J. Kasowski, of 1509 Logan St., will be 3 p.m. Friday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be Greenwood Cemetery , Muscatine. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Kasowski died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. She was employed as a teletype operator at Sears, Roebuck and Co. Florence Klink was born May 7, 1925, in Muscatine. She married Prokop Kasowski in 1958 in Muscatine. He died in 1981. Memorials may be made to the Respite Program or First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a sister, Betty Ross, Muscatine; and a brother, Richard Klink, Oak Brook, Ill.

Chelsea DeWitt
FAIRBURY, Ill. -- Chelsea Jo DeWitt-month-old daughter of Melissa Johnson and John DeWitt, both of Fairbury, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center. Visitation is 10 a.m. to noon and 5-8 p.m. Thursday at VonQualen-Harris Funeral Home, Dwight. The body will be cremated. Chelsea Jo was born Feb. 22, 1999, in Pontiac. Memorials may be made to the family Survivors, in addition to her parents, include a sister, Jensen DeWitt, Carbon Cliff; brothers, Tommy Chapman Jr., Fairbury, and Devlin DeWitt, Carbon Cliff; her grandparents, Carolyn Johnson, Dwight, and John and Donna Shumaker, Chenoa; and her great-grandmother, Alvena Black, Dwight.

George Silberhorn
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for George A. Silberhorn, of 2020 Bidwell Road, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park, with military services by the combined squads of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Thursday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Mr. Silberhorn died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at his home. He was born April 12, 1918, in Muscatine. He married Stella Hase in 1939 in Muscatine. They owned and operated Silberhorn Hardware. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his wife; sons, George A. Jr., Boone, and Thomas A., Plainville, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Marie Crabtree
GALESBURG, Ill. -- Services for C. Marie Hinderliter Crabtree, of 727 Century Estates, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery . Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Crabtree died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at her son's home in Glasford. Marie Bevard was born Jan. 1, 1909, in Fiatt. She married Irvin Hinderliter, then Elmer Hinderliter and later married Thomas Crabtree. All husbands preceded her in death. Memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church radio ministry. Survivors include sons, Donald Hinderliter, Galesburg, Dean Hinderliter, Avon, and Robert Hinderliter, Glasford; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Johnson, Canton; and a brother, Jim Bevard, Galesburg.

Joan Kerr Sullivan
HANOVER, Ill. -- Joan Kerr Sullivan, of Hanover, died Oct. 11, 1999, at Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa. Born Sept. 13, 1919, at Whittams Row House, Galena, she is the daughter of William and Martha "Mattie" (Wenzel) Kerr. She graduated from Galena High School in 1937. She married Roger C. Sullivan at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover, on June 30, 1942. During the early years of World War II, she and Roger worked for the U.S. government, first in Milan, Tenn., and later in Tooele, Utah. She and Roger returned to Hanover in 1944, where they owned and operated Sullivan's Hardware, Appliance and Furniture Store. She lived in Hanover the rest of her life and was active with Roger in their livestock and grain farm and other business interests. She also was a director of Hanover State Bank. She was a member of the St. Ann's Society of St. John the Evangelist Church. She was a devoted and loving mother of eight children. In addition, she took into her home and raised her special niece, Nora Ballein Murphy, from the age of 12. At the age of 46, she rose to the challenge of raising her large family on her own when Roger died unexpectedly. She did so with love, humor and a selfless attitude that so characterized her life. Survivors include daughters, Susan (Robert) Gable and Nancy (Thomas) Miller, both of Hanover, and Kelly (John) Soley, Dubuque; sons, Scott (Suzanne), Rockford, Jeffrey, Davenport, and Casey, Hanover; grandchildren, Kathleen, Mary and Ryan Gable, Sarah Sullivan, Matthew Miller and Andrew and Molly Sullivan; a brother, Richard Kerr, of Missouri; a sister, Jean Kerr Steuber, of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger; daughter, Debbie, and son, Mark; her parents; her brothers, W. Blaine Kerr, Larry Kerr and Grant Kerr; and a sister, Dorothy Carolyn Kerr. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. John the Evangelist Church, Hanover. The Rev. Stephen S. Wilbricht, CSC, will preside. The Rev. Al Fitzgibbons will be in attendance and Deacon David Wilbricht will concelebrate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in care of the Hanover Ambulance Association or Catholic Charities of Jo Daviess County. Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover, is in charge of arrangements. Joan's family and many friends will remember her with great affection.

J. Howard Schmeltzer
BETTENDORF -- J. Howard Schmeltzer, the president of Luther Manor of Scott County Inc. and the retired president of Schmeltzer Brokerage Co., Bettendorf, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus Davenport, after suffering a stroke while driving his car. Born May 30, 1921, in Des Moines, to Norman B. Schmeltzer and Mabel P. (Stephan) Schmeltzer Richter. Mr. Schmeltzer married Virginia Marie Smith on Aug. 21, 1941, in Des Moines. She preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 1998. During his 23-year tenure at Luther Manor, first as treasurer and then as president, the Lutheran church-affiliated agency built four low-income senior citizen retirement homes, one in Davenport and three in Bettendorf. It had recently received approval to build a fifth retirement home in Davenport and was seeking funding for a sixth home, which also was to be built in Davenport. In 1994, he was given the Alumni Citation by Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, which he attended from 1938 to 1940, for his efforts in providing housing to low-income senior citizens in the Quad-City area. A graduate of Augustana College of Rock Island, Mr. Schmeltzer was a founding member of St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, where he had twice been president of the church council. He was twice elected president of the Bettendorf Lions Club and was a past president of the Washington and Jefferson schools PTAs. A funeral service for Mr. Schmeltzer will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church. Survivors include his brother, Norman B. Schmeltzer Jr., the retired co-owner of Schmeltzer Brokerage Co.; his sister, Margaret Ann Larson, Norman, Okla.; his sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sharon (Werner) Schmeltzer, Tinley Park, Ill., John C. Schmeltzer, Chicago, a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, and Jeffrey Richard and Janet L. (Hilker) Schmeltzer, Mayfield, Ky.; his grandchildren, Steve Schmeltzer, David Schmeltzer, Daniel Schmeltzer, Amy Heeren and her husband, Michael, Susan Castronovo and her husband, Michael, and Syndie Schmeltzer and Stephanie Schmeltzer; and his great-grandchildren, Ariana Castronovo, Alyssa Castronovo, Joshua Castronovo and Jessica Jane Heeren.

Harriet Kummerfeldt
DAVENPORT -- Services for Harriet E. Kummerfeldt, of Davenport, will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Visitation is 1 p.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery , Davenport. Mrs. Kummerfeldt died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. She had been employed 13 years in the cost accounting department at American Machine & Metal (AMETEK), East Moline. Harriet Kroeger was born Dec. 18, 1920, in Moline, to Henry and Hertha (Wiechert) Kroeger. She married Herbert Kummerfeldt on Oct. 12, 1956, in Barstow, Ill. He died April 8, 1999. She was a member of High Point Bible Chapel. She enjoyed cooking, reading her Bible and spending time with her family and friends. Memorials may be made to the family, High Point Bible Chapel or Davenport Bible Fellowship. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Terrie and Jeffrey Webster, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Becky Kummerfeldt, Davenport; grandchildren, Amy and Ronald French, both of Davenport; and a sister, Irene Meienberg, Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Glen, who was killed in World War II.

Clarice Kradle
MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. -- Clarice D. Kradle, of Mount Carroll, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery , Mount Carroll. Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Kradle was employed many years as a waitress at Sievert's Tavern, Mount Carroll. She also had worked at Metro Rubber, Argo Fay, and Elkay Manufacturing, Lanark. Clarice Hoover was born Sept. 5, 1940, in Stoughton, Wis. She married Keith Kradle in 1958 in Mount Carroll. He died in 1997. Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Offill, Scales Mound; sons, Rocky, Mount Carroll, Dean, Lanark, and Scott, Sabula; four grandchildren; a sister, Debbie Ellis, Hiawatha, Kan.; and a brother, Les Hoover, Racine, Wis.

Mary Goulden
CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Mary M. Goulden, of the Skilled Care Unit at Mercy Medical Center South, formerly of 867 6th Ave. N., Clinton, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clinton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , Clinton. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, with a vigil at 6 p.m. Mrs. Goulden died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North Campus, Clinton. Mary Clark was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Clinton. She married John Goulden in 1943 in Clinton. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Gloria Ottens, Rolling Meadows, Ill.; a son, Edward J., Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jane VanHorn, Clinton.

Eugene Eisenbeis
CLINTON, Iowa -- Eugene J. Eisenbeis, of 902 7th Ave., St., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at his home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Clinton. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery , Clinton. Schmitz Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Eisenbeis owned and operated Eisenbeis Interiors, Clinton. He had worked more than 20 years at Petersen-Hagge Furniture, Clinton. He retired in 1997. He was born March 5, 1929, in St. Louis. He married Dolores Timmer in 1958 in Clinton. During the Korean War, he served in the Army. Memorials may be made to Visiting Nurses Association. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Renee Fullerton, Maquoketa, Michelle Perino, Clinton, and Steffini Eisenbeis, Des Moines; and four grandchildren.

Janet Ruggeberg
DELMAR, Iowa -- Services for Janet J. Ruggeberg, of rural Delmar, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Burial will be in Oakview Cemetery , Welton. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Mrs. Ruggeberg died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at her home. She was employed a cook at Welton School, worked a catering business, refinished furniture and did painting and wallpapering. Janet Schmidt was born July 13, 1938, in Clinton. She married Everett Ruggeberg in 1954 in DeWitt. They farmed north of Welton. Memorials may be to the church or Gilda's Club, Davenport. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Sally Ruggeberg, LeClaire, and Susan Ruggeberg, Davenport; sons, Bill, Colona, Ill., and Jim, DeWitt; seven grandchildren; her mother, Helen Schmidt, Eldridge; a sister, Joan Vanover, Davenport; and a brother, Aaron Schmidt, Eldridge.

Margaret Brewer
DAVENPORT -- Services for Margaret P. Brewer, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Brewer died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. She was a homemaker. Margaret Schaffer was born Feb. 18, 1912, in Anamosa, N.D. She married George Brewer in 1938 in Bismarck, N.D. He died in 1993. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include daughters, Martha Kass and Maria Beavers, both of Davenport; sons, Peter, Tennessee, Siegfried, Anoka, Minn., and E. John, Columbia, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lena Hochalter, and a brother, Mike Schaffer, both of Bismarck.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Ruth E. Drumm, of 1906 Houser St., will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Visitation is 11:30 a.m. to service time. Burial will be in Blue Grass Cemetery . Miss Drumm died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. She was employed most recently at the Care Facility in the laundry and dietary departments. Before that, she worked at H. J. Heinz Co. and the Muscatine Hotel. She was born May 15, 1917, in Montpelier Township. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Eaton, Muscatine; and a brother, Calvin Drumm, Davenport.

SABULA, Iowa -- Clara M. Miensma, of 57601 U.S. 52, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North Campus, Clinton. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Morrison Chapel of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery , Morrison. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Miensma was a homemaker. Clara Rus was born Aug. 1, 1922, in Morrison. She married Harvey Miensma in 1941 in Sterling, Ill. Memorials may be made to Sabula Ambulance and Fire Department. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Judy Tiesman, Albany, Ill., Linda Schipper, Fulton, Ill., and Tami Hornick, Dickson, Tenn.; sons, Dennis, Albany, and Tony, Sabula; eight grandsons; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Phern Huisingh and Jean Whiting, both of Fulton; and a brother, Ray Rus, Lantana, Fla.

CLINTON, Iowa -- Joan D. Legel, of 4158 Iowa 136, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery , Bryant. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Legel had worked at Fulton Corp., A.C. Nielsen Co., Ralston Purina and Clinton Humane Society. She retired in 1996. Joan Hamstra was born Nov. 27, 1935, in Clinton. She married James Legel in 1964 in Sterling. Survivors include her husband; a son, Jerome E., Clinton; and a stepson, James Legel, Sabula.

Iva Smith
MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Iva E. Smith, of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery , Maquoketa. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa. Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa. She was employed 15 years as a telephone operator in DeWitt and then was a telephone operator for five years at Union Station, Washington, D.C. Iva Harksen was born April 27, 1914, in Clinton County. She married Henry "Tudie" Smith in 1945 in Kahoka, Mo. They managed Maquoketa Country Club for 25 years. He died in 1992. Memorials may be made to Eva E. Smith Memorial Fund. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Hovey, Maquoketa; several nieces and nephews, including Terri Vetter, DeWitt, whom she raised; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
