HAWTHORNE, Calif. -- Evelyn Johnston, of Hawthorne, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Marina Del Rey. Services have been held, with burial in Inglewood Park Cemetery . McCormick Inglewood Mortuary, was in charge of arrangements. Evelyn Kallenbach was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Davenport, to Lillian (Sass) and Raymond Kallenbach. She married William Johnston, Retired Master Sergeant, on Dec. 29, 1951, in Davenport. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1947. She was a housewife and mother. She was proud of having volunteered more than 4,000 hours at the Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, Inglewood. Memorials may be made in memory of Evelyn Johnston at Sisters of St. Joseph of Carandolet, in care of Sister Dolores, Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, 333 N. Prairie Ave., Inglewood, CA, 90301, or D.E.L.T.A. Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Glendale, CA, 91209. Survivors include her husband, William Johnston; daughters and son-in-law, Linda Johnston, Carolyn and Bill Melanson; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill Jr. and Karen, and Randy and Georgia, all of Long Beach; and three grandchildren; and sisters, Shirley Misfeldt and Peggy Harper.

Esther Davis
SPRINGDALE, Iowa -- Services for Esther A. Davis, of Springdale, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Springdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pee Dee Cemetery , rural West Branch. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home, West Brach. Mrs. Davis died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center, West Branch. She farmed with her husband east of Springdale. Esther Lorenzen was born in rural Muscatine County. She married Forest Davis in 1933 in Springdale. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include a son, Carl Davis, Iowa City; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Stokes
COLONA, Ill. -- Services for Betty J. Stokes, of Colona, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Monmouth Cemetery . Visitation will be 6-7:30 p.m. Monday at Family Funeral Services, Colona. Mrs. Stokes died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Illini Hospital, Silvis. She was a homemaker. Betty Shawgo was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Monmouth. She married Cleo Stokes in 1956 in Monmouth. He died in 1974. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include a daughter, Deena Reilly, Silvis; a son, Roger Stokes, Colona; five grandchildren; sisters, Loretta Harp, Barstow, and Lorraine Rico, Galesburg; and brothers, Waynes Shawgo, Hesperia, Calif., Raymond Shawgo, Los Angeles, and Ronald Shawgo, DeWitt, Iowa.

Minnie Hofer
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Minnie C. Hofer, of Rock Island, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Knox-Larson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation is two hours before services. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park. Mrs. Hofer died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Oak Glen Home. She was born Nov. 16, 1899, near Andalusia. Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Roma Nagle
LONG GROVE, Iowa -- Services for Roma E. Nagle, of Long Grove, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery . Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at St. Ann's Church, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Hallgan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Nagle died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Kahl Home for the Aged, Davenport. Roma E. Meier was born Aug. 17, 1902, in Long Grove, the daughter of Henry H. and Amelia (Lahl) Meier. She married James R. Nagle on April 4, 1923, in Long Grove. He died July 17, 1944. She was the oldest resident of Long Grove and lived in the house in which she was born. Her father was the first mayor of Long Grove. She retired as an operator from the Central Scott Telephone Co. and the Long Grove Mutual Telephone Co., where she started working when she was 14. She was also a cook at North High School. She was very active in the community, owning the Nagle Bulk Milk Service. She organized the Long Grove Parent Teacher Association and during World War II, she served as an airplane spotter for the U.S. Defense Department. She was a former member of the North Scott Music Boosters. She always tried to make things better for others. Her Christian faith was always an inspiration to others. She often said, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and, "Love others as oneself." She sacrificed all her life for her family and helping others, especially the Indian and Appalachian Projects. She went to South Dakota for six months each year with her father to hold down the claim and homestead land. She often told of how barren the land was with coyotes and prairie dogs howling all night. She was only 12 years old when she lost her mother, making her the head of the household. At various times in her life, she was called upon several times in the middle of winter to care for her ailing father in Ottertail, Minn. In her later years, she traveled with her son and others. Summer vacations included trips to Colorado, Yellowstone, the Black Hills, Quebec, Canada, Niagara Falls and Washington, D.C. Winter vacations included trips to Florida, Arizona with a special niece, Margie Carroll, and a trip to Hawaii. She took special pleasure in traveling, taking grandchildren and others on her summer trips, even camping out a couple of times. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, St. Ann's Guild, Catholic Women's League, Creative Christians, Woodman of the World, the Long Grove Civic League and the Scott County Historical Society. Her hobbies included tending to her flowers, sewing and knitting, making items for her grandchildren, service organizations and the church. She had extraordinary grace, poise and dignity. She made loveliness more lovely. Memorials may be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church, Kahl Home, Genesis Visiting Nurses Association or Christian Appalachian Project. Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Mary Dobling, Bettendorf, Lorraine and Tom Burke, Long Grove, and Carol Nagle, LaPorte City; sons, Larry and his wife, Lois, Dan Nagle and a daughter-in-law, Janet Nagle, all of Long Grove; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, in whom she took great pride; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Helen Hilcoske, Marjorie Fahrenkrog, Alta Smiley and Ruth Bergert; sons, James (Bud), Richard, Harold and Wayne; and a granddaughter, Cindy Nagle.

LaFaun Storm
GENESEO, Ill -- LaFaun Storm, a resident of Hillcrest Home, Geneseo, formerly of Atkinson, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Atkinson Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery , Geneseo. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson. She had been a beautician for 40 years, working out of her home, retiring in 1981. She had also worked in the dietary department of Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo, and farmed with her husband. LaFaun Hamilton was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Geneseo Township. She married Edward Storm in 1941 in Atkinson Township. Memorials may be made to the LaFaun Storm Memorial Fund. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Jerilyn VanDeWoestyne, Geneseo; a sister, Lorraine Schehl, Atkinson; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Quentin Kuebler
CALAMUS, Iowa -- Quentin C. Kuebler, of Wheatland Manor, formerly of Calamus, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at DeWitt Community Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound. Visitation is one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery , Calamus. He worked at the Calamus Bank for many years. He was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Calamus. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Survivors include several cousins.

Dorothy Burmahl
PRESTON, Iowa -- Dorothy C. Burmahl, of Preston, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at the Maquoketa Care Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston. Burial will be in Spragueville Cemetery . Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. She was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Spragueville. Survivors include several cousins.

Scott Swanson Jr.
DAVENPORT -- Services for Scott R. Swanson Jr.-month-old son of Scott and Rebecca (Shay) Swanson Sr., Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. A private family burial will take place at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today. Scott died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. He was born March 30, 1999, in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his parents; a brother, Anthony "A.J." Shay, Davenport; paternal grandparents, William and Patricia McClendon, Davenport, and John and Diane Swanson, Homestead, Fla.; maternal grandmother, Donna Palmer, Rock Island; great-grandparents, Lois Gahagen, Davenport, George and Barb Poppleton, Mazon, Ill., and Bob and Lorraine Swanson Carmony, Walcott, Iowa; three aunts; one uncle; and four cousins.

James Hill
TIPTON, Iowa -- James "Jim" Lamar Hill, of Tipton, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery , Tipton. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Hill worked in construction in the Iowa City area. He was born Oct. 3l, 1943, in Tipton. He served with the Marine Corps. A memorial has been established. Survivors include a sister, Mary Jean Ruud, Moline; and a brother, Denny Hill, Tipton.

Harold Muesing
CLARENCE, Iowa-- Services for Harold W. Muesing, of Clarence, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery , Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Chapman Funeral Home, Clarence. Mr. Muesing died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 10, 1916, in rural Clarence. He married Wilma Ruchotzke in 1943 in Chicago. Memorials may be made to Clarence Ambulance Service. Survivors include his wife; sons, Travis and Garvis, both of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Eleanor Schroeder, Delores Ruther, Joan Meyer, and Janice Resewehr, all of Clarence, and Bernita Biere, Lowden, Iowa; a brother, Marvin, Clarence; and one grandchild.

Caroline Gipson
NEW BOSTON, Ill. -- Services for Caroline J. Gipson, of New Boston, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo, Ill. Burial will be in the New Boston Cemetery . Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Gipson died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Mercer County Hospital. Caroline Anders was born March 5, 1940, in Rock Island. She married Clifford Gipson in 1983 in Joy, Ill. Her first husband, Paul E. Dahl Sr., preceded her in death. Memorials may be made to the Caroline Gipson Memorial Fund. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Patricia Gilmore, Oklahoma City, Kathy Long, Yukon, Okla., and Melanie Wilson, New Boston; sons, Thomas Dahl, San Diego, Jay Gipson, New Boston, and Paul E. Dahl Jr., Chicago; and 12 grandchildren.

Elmo Murdock
ALEDO, Ill. -- Elmo E. Murdock, of Aledo, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999 at Mercer County Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo, with New Boston Masonic Lodge 59 AF&AM officiating. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery . Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Murdock was partner with his brother-in-law, Marvin Mason, in Murdock Trucking Co. for more than 50 years. He was born May 30, 1912, in rural Mercer County. He married Barbara June Garrett in 1934 in Illinois City, Ill. She died in 1990. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or Mercer County Hospital. Survivors include a son, Ronald, Aledo; a daughter, Sandra Williams, Aledo; a sister, Laura Mason, Aledo; and five grandchildren.

Ruth A. Smith Petersen
BETTENDORF -- Funeral services for Ruth A. Smith Petersen, a resident of Bettendorf, will be 1 p.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Interment will be private. Visitation was Tuesday at the funeral home where a prayer service was held. Mrs. Smith Petersen died Friday Oct.15, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, after a sudden illness. Ruth Varney was born July 1, 1949, in Muscatine, to Robert and Beulah (Rohr) Varney She was a graduate of Muscatine High School. She married Mark A. Petersen on June 28, 1999, in Bettendorf. She was employed as a toll-free directory operator for AT&T, Davenport, for the past 4 1/2 years. In earlier years, she was employed at the former First Federal Savings & Loan, Davenport. She was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport, the Saturday Night Early Birds Bowling League at Town & Country Bowl, Rock Island, and was a regular blood donor. For a number of years, she served as a "substitute" mother to many. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include her husband, Mark; a daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and Michael Tyler, Bettendorf; her mother, Beulah Varney Glen Ellyn, Ill.; her father, Robert Varney, Davenport; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Phil Groben, Glen Ellyn; brothers, Craig and Michael Varney, both of Spokane, Wash.; a niece, Claire Groben; and a nephew, Phil Groben.

Elizabeth Carpenter
MORRISON, Ill. -- Elizabeth C. Carpenter, of 8650 Garden Plain Road, Morrison, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Morrison Community Hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Garden Plain Cemetery . Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Elizabeth Olinger was born Feb. 4, 1912, in Zell, S.D. She married to Edward J. Carpenter in 1931 in Redfield, S.D. She farmed with her husband in South Dakota and rural Morrison. She had worked at the Rich Toy Factory, Morrison, and Volckmann Furniture Co., Morrison. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Church on the Move, Randolph, N.J. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Patricia Mavity, Mount Freedom, N.J.; sons, Eugene, Rock Falls, and Richard J. "Dick", Fulton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Vernon Reeves
DAVENPORT -- Services for Vernon C. Reeves, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery , Ottumwa, Iowa. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Reeves died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, following an extended illness. He was employed by J.I. Case Co., Rock Island, retiring in 1988 after 19 2 years. He was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Ottumwa, to Earl and Myrtle (Dunn) Reeves. He married Kathleen Pricer on Sept. 4, 1946, in Ottumwa. He served in the Army following World War II. Mr. Reeves was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ottumwa. He enjoyed traveling, his family and his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; sons, Jim, Missouri Valley, Iowa, Dennis, Flemington, N.J., and Bryan, Maryville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Max Reeves, Lee's Summit, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Don and Eugene Reeves.

Pamela Jones
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Pamela "Pam" Y. Jones, of Kewanee, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at her home. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery , Kewanee. Miss Jones was born July 7, 1956, in Kewanee. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include her parents, William and Ellen (Horner) Jones, Kewanee; and a brother, Douglas, Kewanee.
