Norma M. Gerdes, 97, of Burlington, Iowa died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2007, at her home.

Born September 13, 1910 in Burlington she was the daughter of Ernest H. and Mathilda Pietzsch Gerdes.

Miss Gerdes was a graduate of Burlington High School and Burlington Jr. College. She also graduated from Evanston Hospital School of Nursing in Evanston, Illinois and a six-month postgraduate course in surgery at John’s Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland. Miss Gerdes was a registered nurse working for Surgeon’s, Inc. for 30 years and retiring in 1983.

She was a member of First United Church of Christ, their Women’s Fellowship and Mission Circle, and the Jane Delano Society.

Survivors include one nephew, Neal Gerdes of Indianapolis, Indiana and two great nieces, Lisa Norris and Kim Wright both of Knoxville, Tennessee.
Her parents, a brother Maxwell Gerdes, a sister Lorna Gerdes, and one nephew Grant Gerdes preceded her in death.

Patricia "Pat" Ann Huddleston
May 16, 1938 ~ April 14, 2008

-Family Visitation: Wednesday, April 16, 2008, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in
Lunning Chapel.
-Graveside Funeral Service and Interment: Thursday, April 17, 2008, at 2:00 PM
in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
The Reverend Randall Gearhart will officiate.
Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and
the Animal Protection League.

Patricia “Pat” Ann Huddleston, 69, of Burlington died at 3:15 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born May 16, 1938 in Peoria, Illinois she was the daughter of Donald Elmer Riley and Zola Evelyn Clifton Riley Loose. In 1954 she married Jim Stratton. In 1976 she married Jack Charles Huddleston in Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1987.

Mrs. Huddleston worked at Chittenden and Eastman for over 20 years. She was also owner of the Paddlewheel for 11 years.

She loved going to yard sales, upholstering and refinishing furniture and her animals. She enjoyed collecting piano babies and glassware.

Survivors include two sons, Sam Stratton of Morning Sun and David (Deb) Stratton of Sperry; four grandchildren, Carl, Travis, Danielle and Jason; one great grandson, Christian James; and one brother, Donald Owen (Jean) Riley of Burlington.

Both husbands, one son Charles Richard “Dick” Stratton and her parents preceded her in death.

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House and the Animal Protection League.

Marguerite E. Jankowski
July 1, 1913 ~ April 17, 2008

-Family Visitation: Sunday, April 20, 2008, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM in
Lunning Chapel.
-Graveside Funeral Service and Interment: Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM
in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
The Reverend Paul Hooks will officiate.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
Marguerite E. Jankowski, 94, of Burlington died at 7:44 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2008, at her home.

Born July 1, 1913 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Arthur “Art” and Esther Anderson Hartman. Her father was a pioneer aeronaut and aviator and founder of Burlington Municipal Airport.

On June 12, 1935 she married Joseph P. Jankowski in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2001.

Mrs. Jankowski attended Burlington Community Schools. She worked for the Weather Bureau and Hartman Flying Service at Burlington Municipal Airport, I.A.A.P., Leopold Desk Company, and was a cook at Gibby’s, Oak Street School cafeteria and the Cook’s Store.

She was of the Lutheran faith, helped with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and was a past member of Cascade Boat Club.

Survivors include four children, Larry P. Jankowski of Burlington, Joan Knotts of West Burlington, Dorothy Whitaker of Mediapolis and Joe A. Jankowski of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Danny, Wade, Chad, Allen, Corey, Nick, Randi, Jennifer and Tracey; five great grandchildren, Delanie, Jesse, Cody, Peyton and Jake; one sister, Marilyn Eisenhart of Sun City, Arizona and one brother, Paul Hartman of Waukee, Iowa.

Her parents, husband, one sister, one brother and one grandchild preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.

James (Jimmie) Lee Kacena
October 1, 1933 ~ April 5, 2008

-Friends May Call: Monday, April 5th, from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
-Family Visitation: Monday, April 5th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
-Funeral Service: Tuesday, April 9th, at 11:00 AM in Lunning Chapel.
The Reverend Ken Royar will officiate.
-Inurnment: Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa will be at a later date.
Memorials have been established for the Carthage Lake Club Habitat Fund and
Burlington Bike Trails.
According to his wishes, Mr. Kacena will be cremated following the funeral service.

James “Jimmie” Lee Kacena, 74, of Burlington, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born October 1, 1933 in Iowa City, he was the son of Alene and John Kacena. On September 18, 1954, he married Carolyn Marner in Iowa City. She survives.

Mr. Kacena was a graduate of Iowa City High School and attended the University of Iowa. He was in business in Iowa City until 1974 when the family moved to Burlington where Jim owned and operated Kacena Equipment, Inc., John Deere dealership. After retiring, he became a licensed real estate agent, owned Midwest Lease Company, and owned and managed rental properties. He obtained his pilot’s license and flew his own plane for a number of years.

Mr. Kacena was a member of the Board of Directors at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Burlington since 1980. He was a member of Burlington Rotary Club, Burlington Golf Club, First United Methodist Church, former member of Des Moines County Zoning commission and volunteered in the building of two homes of Habitat for Humanity. He was an active member and past president of Carthage Lake Club, where he enjoyed many friendships. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating with his friends and family. He took pleasure in collecting antique duck decoys, gardening and building wooduck houses for the Rotary Club. He was an avid reader and supporter of the new Burlington Public Library and a longtime Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was a thoughtful and loving husband and a caring father and grandfather.

Survivors include his loving wife, Carolyn Kacena and their five children; David Kacena of Iowa City, Christopher (Shawn) Kacena of Sherwood, Arkansas, Kathryn (Lorry) Lazenby of Joplin, Missouri, Cynthia (Lynn) Cavett of Macomb, Illinois, and Jennifer (Randy) Frice of Burlington; eleven grandchildren, Ashton, Abby, and Cameron Kacena, Amy (Blaik) Mason, Jacob and Nicholas Kacena, Hannah, John, and Rachel Lazenby, Maxwell and Jackson Cavett; one step grandson, Blake (Amanda) Shadell; three great grandchildren, Aiden, Brennan, and Chloe Mason; two brothers, Robert (Betty) Kacena and Stanley (Carole) Kacena; one sister, Karen (Tom) Diltz; a cousin, Albert Spetrino and many nieces and nephews.

His parents and one grandchild, Nathaniel Lazenby preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established for the Carthage Lake Club Habitat Fund and Burlington Bike Trails.

November 6, 1953 - September 15, 2007

A Memorial has been established for her grandson, Dalton's, education.
Mrs. Sheila Ann Koenig, 53, of West Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, September 15, 2007, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 6, 1953 in Quincy, Illinois she was the daughter of Richard Carlton and Vivian Marie Sibbing McFarland. On August 25, 1973 she married Alan Henry Koenig in Quincy.

Sheila was a 1971 graduate from Notre Dame High School in Quincy, Illinois. She was a homemaker. She was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, enjoyed watching Fox News, playing the flute, surfing the Internet, her cats and dogs, and especially her grandson Dalton.

Survivors include her husband, Alan Koenig of West Burlington; one daughter, Megan Marie Koenig of West Burlington; one grandson, Dalton James Koenig of West Burlington; one brother, Mark (Karen) McFarland of Quincy Illinois; one uncle, Robert Sibbing of Macomb, Illinois; two nieces, and one nephew.

Her parents preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established to her grandson Dalton’s education.

Mildred Lucille Logan
May 19, 1927 - September 30, 2007

According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Logan has been cremated

Mildred Lucille Logan, 80, of Stronghurst, Illinois and formerly of Burlington, Iowa and Albuquerque, New Mexico died at 12:12 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2007, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.

Born May 19, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri, she was the daughter of Carl and Inez Horn Schmidt. On April 19, 1947 she married Joseph Logan in Burlington. He preceded her in death on January 30, 1987.

Mrs. Logan was a 1945 graduate of Burlington High School and attended the University if Albuquerque. She was an accountant for the University of New Mexico for over 14 years, retiring in 1989. Mrs. Logan was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include one son, Gary Logan of Gladstone, Illinois, two daughters, Glo Logan West of Jelm, Wyoming and Gwendy Logan of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Her husband, daughter Gay Logan, grandson Kelly Logan, parents, and her twin brother who was stillborn preceded her in death.
