LETTS, Iowa -- Services for Richard B. "Brett" Thurston, of Letts, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery , Wilton. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton, and one hour before the service Wednesday at the church. Mr. Thurston died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Ipsco Steel, Montpelier. He was employed as a forklift operator at Hagerty Brothers, East Peoria, Ill. He was born April 23, 1964, in Davenport. He married Leslie Fuller in 1995 in Wilton. He had served in the Navy. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Amber Wilhelm, Sterling, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Courtney Salek, Letts; his parents, Bourke and Carla Thurston, Wilton; and brothers, Rick, Grandview, and Vance, Wilton.

Einar Boardsen
CAMANCHE, Iowa -- Services for Einar Boardsen, of 95 Cedar Heights Court, formerly of 1863 Glendale Road, Clinton, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery , Clinton, with military services by the Clinton AMVETS. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home. Mr. Boardsen died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at his home. He was employed 16 years as an accountant at Clinton Corn Processing Co. and 18 years as an accountant at Carstensen Freight Lines. He retired in 1984. He was born March 5, 1926, in Laukhella, Norway. He married Phyllis Kemmer in 1948 in Morrison, Ill. During World War II, he served in the Navy. Memorials may be made to the church or American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Vicki Warren, Green Lake, Wis., Debra Brandmeyer, of the Quad-Cities, and Ann Sperry, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; sons, John, Waterloo, and Eric, Louisville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Chris Boysen, Clinton; and a brother, Harry, Waterloo.

Clara Todd
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Clara E. Todd, of Ainsworth, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Visitation is 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery . Mrs. Todd worked five years at Keller Ladder and five years at Eagle Signal, Davenport. Clara Waddell was born March 17, 1915, in Huron. She married Gordon Todd in 1933 in Wapello. He died in 1985. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Marilyn Fulton, Ainsworth, and Mona Wilhlem, Forsyth, Mont.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Snyder, Davenport.

Lula Ross
MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. -- Services for Lula M. Ross, of Rockford, formerly of Mount Carroll, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery , Mount Carroll. Mrs. Ross died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at St. Anne Center, Rockford. She was employed at an insurance company in Freeport and then worked at Carroll County Farm Bureau. She also worked at Production Credit Association and alternated terms with her husband, Frank, as Carroll County treasurer for 32 years. Lula Gump was born July 19, 1903, in the family farm in Freedom Township, Carroll County. She married Frank Ross in 1925 in Mount Carroll. He died in 1960. Survivors include daughters, Betsey Rohner, Stockton, Calif., Roberta Montgomery, Rockford, and Catherine Randecker, Mount Carroll; sons, Carl, Bakersfield, Calif., and Clifford, Rockford; 18 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Barbara Barnhart
FULTON, Ill. -- Barbara R. Barnhart, of 1309 4th Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the Alverno Health Care Facility, Clinton, Iowa. Private services will be at Fulton Township Cemetery , Fulton. No visitation will be held. Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton, is in charge of arrangements. Barbara Ramseth was born June 20, 1913, in Chicago. She married Lyle Barnhart in 1939 in Chicago. He died in 1997. Memorials may be made to the care facility. Survivors include sons, Byron, Fulton, and Warren, San Diego; and three grandchildren.

ROCK ISLAND -- Charles O. Austin Jr., of 1721 23rd Ave., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in Rock Island. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Rock Island High School auditorium. The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the high school library. The body was donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine, Iowa City. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Austin was a veteran educator. He began his career in 1937 as a social studies teacher in Ida Grove, Iowa. He was a critic teacher in social studies at University of Iowa High School from 1938 to 1941; high school principal in West Liberty, Iowa in 1941-42; high school principal in Clarion, Iowa from 1946 to 1948; and high school principal in Taylorville, Ill., from 1948 to 1951. From 1951 to 1965, he was principal of Rock Island High School. In 1965 he was named assistant superintendent of schools. He became superintendent in 1966, a position he held until 1973. From 1973 to 1975, he was executive director of Junior Achievement of the Quad-Cities Area Inc. And from 1979 to 1987, he was vice president of marketing for American Bank of Rock Island. Charles O. Austin Jr. was born Dec. 26, 1914, in Decatur, Ill., the son of Charles O. Austin Sr. and Olive Pepper Austin. He married Mary Ablard on May 6, 1943, in Little Rock, Ark. She died May 18, 1982. He graduated from Charleston (Ill.) High School in 1932 and Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He earned a masters degree in political science in 1940 from the University of Iowa. He did 60 hours of additional graduate work in education, history and human relations at the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University, Macomb. Mr. Austin served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rank of captain. He was a commissioned second lieutenant in the infantry in 1943 and served 2 1/2 years with the 90th Infantry Regiment. He was officer in charge of the Officers' Separation Center, Fort Bragg, N.C., in 1945-46, and was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon for service at Fort Bragg in June 1946. He was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee. Mr. Austin was a life member of the National Education Association and retired member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators. He also was a member of the University of Iowa Presidents' Club, Eastern Illinois University President's Club and Phi Delta Kappa. He was awarded the PDK Service Key in 1985 and the PDK Founders' Society in 1987. He also served the educational community as a chairman of the legislative commission of the Illinois High School Association. He served the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) from 1960-1963 as a member of a committee that implemented a program for gifted children in the state of Illinois. In 1963 he was appointed to the OSPI Advisory Council on Gifted Children. He held that appointment until 1965. He was a member of the OSPI State Finance committee from 1971 to 1973. Mr. Austin had five articles on educational administration printed in Illinois Education or The Bulletin of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. His community service included work with the following organizations: Fort Armstrong Area Council of Boy Scouts, Rock Island Youth Guidance Council, Rock Island Safety Council, Citizens' Advisory Committee to Juvenile Court, Rock Island Clean and Beautiful, Rock Island Chamber of Commerce and Citizens for Good Government. He also had been president of the Namequa Lodge Board, treasurer of the River Bend Library Board, president and 24-year member of the Rock Island Library Board, chair of individual gifts committee and 15-year volunteer for United Way and member of the YWCA Advisory Board for 12 years. He was a member of the American Cancer Society for 21 years and organized the Rock Island chapter. He worked with the American Red Cross for 44 years, serving as treasurer. In 1998, he was designated as an honorary life board member. He also worked with the American Heart Society for 19 years. Mr. Austin joined the Rotary in Clarion in 1947. He became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1973 and a benefactor for the foundation in 1989. He received many Rotarian honors including the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service in 1974, the Rock Island Rotary Service Above Self award (1977), Distinguished Service award (1977-78), Rock Island Community Service award (1984), District 642 Service award (1984), Rock Island Rotary A.T. Pera award (1985) and the 50-year Perfect Attendance award (1999). As a member of the Rotary he served as District 642 governor in 1984. Other awards he received included presidential citations in 1973 and 1975 from the Illinois Association of School Administrators, the DeMolay Legion of Merit in 1981, the Illinois Quad-City Chamber of Commerce award for Outstanding Service as a volunteer in 1985, distinguished alumnus award from Eastern Illinois University in 1986, Rock Island Citizen of the Year in 1989 and the Charles O. Austin Scholar recognition in 1999. In 1984, he was selected as king of the Mardi Gras sponsored by Junior Board of Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Rock Island High School Honors Program, c/o Charles Austin III, 4507 41st Ave. Court, Rock Island, Ill., 61201. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles O. Austin III and Ann Austin, Rock Island; a son, Stephen J. Austin, Chicago; and grandchildren, Julie Austin and John Austin, both of Rock Island. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy C. Austin, in infancy; and a twin brother, Jack Austin, in 1978.

Lois G. Hoppe
MOLINE -- Lois G. Hoppe, of Moline, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Rev. Dr. Robert Miller, First Congregational Church, Moline, will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Lois Guyett was born Jan. 28, 1907, in Woodbine, Iowa, the daughter of John and Daisy (Griffith) Guyett, the eighth child in a large family of 12 children. Her childhood was spent on a 646-acre farm in western Iowa where she received her elementary education at a one-room rural school. She attended high school in Woodbine, Iowa. After graduation from high school she obtained a teacher's certificate and taught in one-room rural schools for three years before entering Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, she graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. Following graduation, she taught home economics in several Iowa high schools until 1937 when she married Manley Hoppe in Woodbine. The Hoppes made their home in Moline for the remainder of her lifetime, except for 3 1/2 years during World War II when they lived in Denver while Manley Hoppe served in the Army. Lois was an active homemaker, raising two daughters, Jean and Susan. She enjoyed her house plants, her flower garden and wild birds and developed considerable skill as an artist, painting in oils. But most of all she enjoyed traveling which, in spite of a physical handicap that plagued her throughout her many years, took the Hoppes by cruises and personal travel to almost all parts of the world. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church, Moline, a member of P.E.O. Chapter HB and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Memorials may be made to the church or Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley. In addition to her husband, Lois leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Mike Steffenson, Davenport, and Susan and Jim Crookston, Atlanta; five grandchildren, Douglas Steffenson, Chicago, Dr. Sandra Tamkin, Lafayette, Calif., Laura Crookston and Jennifer Crookston, both of New York City, and Katy Crookston, Atlanta; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Steffenson, Chicago; and sisters, Grace Beamer, Bryan, Texas, and Dorothy Rinne, Lancaster, Calif. Lois will always be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother, a wonderful homemaker and a dear friend to all who knew her during her long and extremely active 92-year lifetime.

Martha Carlin
MOLINE -- Martha S. Carlin, of 3202 18th Ave., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at her home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , East Moline. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Carlin worked for 16 years as a machinist with Quad-City Die Cast, Moline. Martha McKay was born Aug. 21, 1955, in Moline, the daughter of Norman and Carla Jean (Giles) McKay. She married Stephen D. Carlin Sr., on April 10, 1971, in Moline. She enjoyed outside activities and her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; sons, Gary Carlin, Moline, and Stephen Carlin Jr., Davenport; grandchildren, Jonathan Elliott, Jordan Johnson and Avalon Carlin; her parents, Norman and Jean McKay, Bettendorf; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary (Fred) Anderson, Moline, Norma (Dave) Peters, Allentown, Pa., and Melinda (Allen) Carlin, East Moline; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike (Sandy) McKay, Bettendorf; and Mark (Anna) McKay, Moline; her grandmother, Mary Giles, Davenport; sisters-in-law, Lisa Gerard, Rock Island, Earline Clayton, East Moline, and Ruth Coates, Pompa Beach, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Dennis Carlin, New Windsor, Ill., and Wes Woolsey and Tim Woolsey, both of Rock Island; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacey Lyn Carlin.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Moline. Visitation is 10 a.m. until time of service. Lucille Sipes was born March 6, 1918, in Moline. She married Howard F. Evans in 1939 in Moline. He died in 1993. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include a daughter, Rozella Evans, Bushnell; a son, Bob, Acworth, Ga.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Hawkins, Seattle, Wash.

Leonard Lucas
MOLINE -- Services for Leonard W. Lucas, of Moline, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Lucas died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. He was born April 10, 1939, in Moline, the son of Fay Leonard and Irene (Land) Lucas. He married Sheryll Overmire on Jan. 7, 1961, in East Moline. Mr. Lucas had worked at the Rock Island Argus, the former American Air Filter and most recently owned and operated Lucas Floor Cleaning for the past 15 years. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Al Cullor, and a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Diana Lucas, all of Moline; grandchildren, Melissa, Meghin, Abby, Stephanie and Ryan; and a brother, Lee Paris, Tacoma, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Leonard, who died in 1992.

Florence Gustafson
COAL VALLEY -- Services for Florence C. Gustafson, of Coal Valley, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Beulah Presbyterian Church, Orion, Ill. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley. Mrs. Gustafson died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline. Florence Gustafson was born April 14, 1913, in Moline. She married Swan Gustafson in 1937 in Moline. He died in 1978. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or to Pathway Hospice. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Metzler, Dallas; sons, Carl, Mason, Mich., and Robert, Worthington, Ohio; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Hamilton, Moline.

Hilda Windman
DeWITT, Iowa -- Hilda C. Windman, formerly of Muscatine, Welton and DeWitt, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, DeWitt. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. She had farmed with her husband, retiring in 1973. Hilda Henning was born July 4, 1908, in Muscatine. She married Elmer Windman in 1930 in Muscatine. He died in 1986. Memorials may be made to the church or Alzheimer's Association. Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Witt, Delmar; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Helen Dusenberry, Mildred Knause and Dorothy Tiecke, all of Muscatine.

BETTENDORF -- Services for Emma Wright Brown, of Bettendorf, will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. until the time of service at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Mrs. Brown died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Bettendorf Health Care Center. Emma Elsa Berner was born Aug. 21, 1905, in Hamburg, Germany. She married Clarence Wright in 1932 in Rock Island. She married Paul Brown in 1953 in Unionville, Mo. She had been employed at the Northwestern Telephone Co. as a telephone operator and as a manager of the Lend-A-Hand Club, Davenport. Survivors include twin daughters, Peggy J. Smith, Davenport, and Patsy Irene Long, Torrance, Calif.; sons, Joseph Wright, Bettendorf, and Don Prehn, of South Carolina; nieces, Bonnie Hale, McHenry, Ill., and June Urmie, Blue Grass; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

John Oertel
DAVENPORT -- Services for John W. Oertel, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday at McGinnis, Chambers and Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal, with military honors conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 828, Davenport. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Oertel died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. He was employed as a machinist at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1973 after 37 years of government service. While at the Arsenal, he was awarded the Performance of Excellence. He was born March 14, 1917, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of George L. and Mary E. (Roepch) Oertel. He married Violet Flint on July 3, 1976, in Dubuque. She died March 4, 1997. During World War II, he served in the Army with the 272nd Infantry in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, he received the American Defense Service Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star, four Overseas Service Bars and a Service Stripe. Memberships included the VFW Post 828, Davenport, where he was a life-member, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Moose Lodge 28, both in Davenport, and the Viking Club, Moline. He enjoyed fishing and playing euchre with his many friends. Memorials may be made to the Scott County Humane Society. Survivors include daughters, Betty Stafford, Moore, Okla., Deloras Theys, Plano, Texas, and Edith Ann Rice, Davenport; sons, Jimmy Decker, Bettendorf, Billy Oertel, Davenport, and Milton M. Oertel, Glenwood, Iowa; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bernice Polsean, Dubuque, and Martha Domke, Pontiac, Mich. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Rosenkrans, Mary Baal and Estella Roth; and brothers, Milton Oertel, George Oertel and William M. Oertel.

DAVENPORT -- Services for Dorothy L. Goossen, of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Davenport, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Mrs. Goossen died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 at Des Moines General Hospital. She was born July 9, 1918, in Davenport. She married Joseph Goossen. He died in 1956. She was an O.B. nurse at Davenport Osteopathic Hospital for 10 years. She retired in 1981 as a nursing assistant for Dr. Chas. Cunningham in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport, or the Basilica of St. John Church, Des Moines. Survivors include daughters, Janet Coffman, Chicago; Carole Gittings, Hartford Conn., and Mary Wise, and Linda Fellner, both of West Des Moines; a son, Lee, Cape Coral, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
