Ozetta Elizabeth Loose, 89, of Burlington, died at 8:50 PM, Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, Virginia. Mrs. Loose had been visiting her son and family for the previous six months.

Born October 1, 1918 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle Carithers Wagler. She married Harold Loose on May 29, 1942 in Burlington; he preceded her in death on August 5, 2006.

Mrs. Loose graduated from Burlington High School and thereafter completed several courses in business school.

Prior to her marriage, she worked at Klein’s Dress Shop and Woolworth’s Dime Store. After her marriage Mrs. Loose worked in the office at the Sheaffer Pen Company and subsequently on the Sheaffer production line assembling radios for the military during World War II. She lived with her husband during his stateside military service in Colorado, California Tennessee, Maryland, and Virginia. Following World War II and her husband’s return from military duty in Europe, they remained in Burlington where she served as a homemaker.

She was baptized and attended the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where she enjoyed singing in the choir. In the late 1930’s, she sang such songs as “September in the Rain” and “Red Sails in the Sunset” with her sisters in a group called the Rhythm Twisters, and made many appearances at country and western venues, minstrel shows, and church functions. She later joined the First United Church of Christ where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and was a faithful member for over 65 years.

Mrs. Loose was an active PTA member at grade school, middle school, and high school; a member of Burlington Civic Music and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. In her early years, Mrs. Loose was active in sports and excelled in tennis. She was a life long stamp collector, specializing in U.S. issues. She also was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Her main interests included time with her beloved family, church activities, writing, poetry, reading historical novels, and volunteer work for local charities. She enjoyed many hours listening to CDs composed and performed by her two grandchildren, both of whom are talented musicians. She was a loving, devoted caregiver to her husband for many years at home.

Survivors include a son, Greg Loose, and his wife Sandra, of Woodbridge, Virginia; two grandchildren, Michelle E. Schrotz and Scott A. Loose; three sisters, Eva Schafer and Gertrude Fletcher of Burlington, and Leona Sissel of Muscatine.

Her parents, husband Harold, a sister Ferris Winegarden, and two brothers, Ira Wagler and Marvin Wagler, preceded her in death.

Kenneth E. Lunsman

Kenneth E. Lunsman, 64, of rural West Burlington, Iowa died Friday, October 5, 2007, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born November 1, 1942 in Mason City, Iowa he was the son of Howard and Beada Kollasch Lunsman. On September 30, 1972 he married Katherine L. Harms in Spencer, Iowa.

Kenneth was a graduate of Spencer High School, attended the University of Iowa and Mason City Jr. College and received his business degree from Buena Vista University and attended R.O.T.C. School. He was a Vietnam Army veteran achieving the rank of captain.

Kenneth worked in sales at U.S. Cellular, McGregor Furniture, Hy-Vee Floral, and AAL Insurance. He owned his own Coast-to-Coast Store in Heron Lake, Minnesota from 1975 to 1982 and in retirement worked for H&R Block Tax Preparation.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, serving as president of the Church Council for two years, and a member of American Legion. He played piano and pipe organ. As an accomplished organist, starting at age 15, he played for several Lutheran churches in Southwest Minnesota and Northwest Iowa until his move to West Burlington in 1989. He enjoyed yard work and working on the computer. Kenneth was very talented and creative in his floral designs, design and interior decorating.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Lunsman of rural West Burlington; one son, Kraig E. Lunsman of West Burlington; one daughter, Kristel L. Lunsman also of West Burlington; and two sisters, Beverly Lunsman of Mason City, Iowa and Karen (Lynn) Wee of Spencer.

His parents preceded him in death.

Fred K. Miller
November 25, 1910 ~ April 24, 2008

Fred K. Miller, 97, of Burlington, died at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born November 25, 1910 in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, he was the son of Wavie and Effie Hawkins Miller. He married Mildred Lyons in 1932, they later divorced. On April 3, 1954, he married Lela Sliger Schmeiser in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2007.

Mr. Miller was a graduate of Alexis (Illinois) High School where he was the quarterback of the football team and won many medals for track and field. He was a quality control inspector at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, retiring in 1970.

Mr. Miller was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles as a Golden Eagle. He participated with and was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and enjoyed boating, bowling and woodworking.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Strawhacker Powers of Fort Myers, Florida; one stepdaughter, Susan Kenney of Burlington; one stepson, Stephen Schmeiser of Asheville, North Carolina; 16 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

His wife, son Fred Lyons Miller, parents, one brother, two sisters, and one grandchild preceded him in death.

Verus "Bebe" Leota Ossian-Morris
June 7, 1913 - September 15, 2007

According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Ossian-Morris has been cremated.

Verus “Bebe” Leota Ossian-Morris, 94, of Burlington, Iowa and formerly of Muncie, Indiana died at 5:20 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2007, at Burlington Care Center.

Born June 7, 1913 in Paducah, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Clifford C. and Josephine Cunningham Hiatt. On September 22, 1934 she married Johan “John” Anton Elmer Ossian. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1980 in Auburn, Nebraska. She then married Ralph Morris in 1996 and he also preceded her in death.

Bebe graduated from high school in Muncie, Indiana and attended Omaha University. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining and was researching and trying new recipes. As the result of strokes; she was placed in Burlington Care Center.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnn Monroe of Burlington; one son, John Clifford Ossian of Burlington; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Her husbands, parents and two brothers preceded her in death.

M. Phyllis Magnuson Nelson
August 7, 1918 ~ March 25, 2008

A memorial has been established for Messiah Lutheran Church

M. Phyllis Magnuson Nelson, 89, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

Phyllis was born August 7, 1918, the daughter of Varner C. and Eleanor E. Nelson Magnuson. Phyllis graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1937, and later from the Burlington Business School. Prior to marriage and children, Phyllis worked as a secretary and then later in life she again worked as a secretary retiring from the Des Moines County Visiting Nurses in 1983.

Phyllis was united in marriage to LeRoy L. Nelson on April 5, 1942. Together they raised four children. LeRoy preceded her in death on June 15, 1973. Phyllis and LeRoy were long time members of Messiah Lutheran Church. Even after LeRoy’s death, Phyllis continued to participate in many facets of church life at Messiah until late in life. She also enjoyed her King’s Daughters Group and even more so when they turned their group into a sewing club as Phyllis’ passion was doing crafts and sewing. Each of her nine grandchildren has a full-size quilt made and quilted especially for them by her. Her friends and family all enjoyed her handiwork and she missed it sorely when she could no longer see well enough to do the stitching.

Phyllis is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Dean Mattix of Oskaloosa and Kathy and Stan Young of Mount Pleasant; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jennifer Nelson of Cheyenne, Wyoming; a son-in-law, Bob Hiller of Burlington; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, her husband, her sister-in-law Lillian Nelson, and her daughter Janet Hiller.

Ruby Rebecca Norton
February 5, 1932 - September 22, 2007

Ruby Rebecca Norton, 75, of Burlington, died at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2007 in her home.

Born February 5, 1932 in McIntire, Iowa, she was the daughter of Ora I. and Myrtle Eldora Brockett. On September 4, 1953 she married Clarence I. Norton in Oquawka, Illinois.

She was a graduate of American High School, in Chicago, Illinois.

She worked at IRC in the Ultra Clean Room. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church and served as a Senior Saint. She was a Pen Pal and was also a member of the 32 Club.

Survivors include her husband Clarence; two sons, Ken Norton of New London, and Roy Norton of Burlington; four grandchildren, Tina, Tim, Tom, and Chad; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Glenn Moyers of Oquawka, Illinois, Martin Brockett of Joplin, Missouri, and Bill Moyers of Tennessee; three sisters, Mary Moyers of West Burlington, Cathy Waterman of Burlington, and Ethyl Huss of Lomax, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents, one daughter Sandra Norton, and four brothers Bob, Chuck, Harry, and Hap preceded her in death.

Lawrence "Larry" Walter Otto
February 25, 1920 - September 27, 2007

Lawrence “Larry” Walter Otto, 87, of Burlington, Iowa died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2007, at Burlington Care Center.

Born February 25, 1920 at his family’s farm in rural Burlington, he was the son of Walter Fred and Ella Thye Otto. On July 18, 1947 he married Virginia Mae Bohlken in Burlington at Oak Street Baptist Church.

Larry was a 1938 graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Business College. A World War II Army veteran, Sgt. Otto served in the European Theater including England, France and Germany. He was a combat veteran from 1942 – 1945 in Company A, 820th Engineer Aviation Battalion. His last eight months he served in the glider troop and was honorably discharged October 3, 1945.

Larry farmed, served as a rural mail carrier, a salesman for Chamberlin Company while living in Kewanee, Illinois, and an employee of Iowa Ordnance Plant before expressing his entrepreneurial spirit. Larry initially founded Farm and Home Supply, which transitioned in 1952 to Otto-Matic Water Specialists, which he owned and operated until his retirement January 1, 1998.

He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon and on numerous boards. He was also a member of The Gideons International, Blackhawk Restorers, Roamin’ Hawks, and a life member of Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, boating, traveling, playing practical jokes, camping, antique cars and tractors. He never met a stranger, loved to share his military experiences, and his faith in Jesus Christ.

Survivors include his loving wife, Virginia M. Otto of Burlington; children, Susan L. (Terry) Donovan of Wever, Iowa, Paul R. Otto of Birmingham, Alabama, Diane R. (Gregg) Shaffer of Silver Spring, Maryland, David Lawrence (Joanne) Otto of Burlington and Karen E. Otto of Chicago, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Lt. Cmdr. Angelic D. Donovan of Kodiak, Alaska, Tara C. (Jason) Bollback of Laguna Niguel, California and Zachariah D. (Somer) Donovan of Boise, Idaho, Elisa G. Shaffer, Heidiane M. Shaffer and Erynne N. Shaffer all of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Katherine M. Otto and Joshua David Otto both of Burlington; one great granddaughter, Sydney Mae Bollback of Laguna Niguel, California; and one brother, Henry “Hank” L. (Ginny) Otto of Spencerville, Ohio.
His parents preceded him in death.
