GALVA, Ill. -- Harland M. Johnson, of Rochelle, formerly of Galva, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Rochelle Community Hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Galva Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery , with military services by Hagberg-Hamlin Post 45, American Legion, Galva. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Johnson had operated the Mobil Oil Station in Galva for more than 30 years. He was born June 22, 1918, in Kewanee. He married Lois Shea in 1943 in Miami. She died in 1993. He married Carolyn Campbell Curl in 1994 in Decatur, Ala. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a flight instructor. Memorials may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, Galva. Survivors include his wife; sons, Daniel, Merrill, Wis., Mike, Decatur, Ala., and Scott, Peoria; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Forse, Redmond, Wash.

Viola Mason
CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Viola R. Mason, of Clinton, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery , Clinton. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Mason died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. She was a homemaker. Viola Palmer was born Dec. 22, 1909, in Bellevue. She married Floyd Mason in 1928 in Clinton. He died in 1987. Survivors include daughters, Beverly Gilge and Shirley Kohl, and sons, Richard L. and Donald E., all of Clinton; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Geraldine Grant
BENNETT, Iowa -- Geraldine V. Grant, of 2059 220th St., died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ozark Cemetery , Texas County, Mo. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Grant was a homemaker. Geraldine Bell was born Oct. 2, 1904, in Taylor Ridge, Ill. She married Christopher Grant in 1923 in Murphsburg, Ill. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Dora Gerald, Fort Madison; sons, Fred, Kirksville, Mo., the Rev. Robert, Hammond, Ind., and Donald, Bennett; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Barbara Mullens
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Barbara J. Mullens, of Rock Island, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Mrs. Mullens died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at River Park Health Care Center, Rock Island. In earlier years, she had worked at Skills Inc., Moline. Barbara Larson was born Oct. 26, 1932, in Moline. She married Dan Beauchamp in 1952 in Moline. She married Donald Mullens in 1963 in Rock Island. Survivors include daughters, Kathy, Deione, Valerie and Gloria; and a sister, Maureen Sears, Rock Island.

Arnold Johnson
MOLINE -- Services for Arnold O. Johnson, of Moline, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Mr. Johnson died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island. He retired in 1972 as a methods and standard engineer after 35 years at International Harvester. He was born Oct. 18, 1913, in Moline. He married Lucille Exbom in 1940 in Moline. She died in 1997. Survivors include a son, Arnold, Orion; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Tom Salsbury
DAVENPORT -- Services for Tom Salsbury, of Burnsville, Minn., formerly of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tom died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, after a brief illness and battle with cancer. Tom taught art and was a coach at Assumption High School for several years. He then was employed as a sales representative for Mid-American Printing and Meyers Printing. Most recently, he was a marketing consultant at Rainmaker Marketing, a company he founded in Minnesota. He was born Oct. 15, 1947, in Davenport, to James F. and Loretta (Daley) Salsbury. He married Debbie Russell on Aug. 16, 1969, at St. Mary's Church, Davenport. He graduated from Assumption High School, Class of 1965. He graduated from St. Ambrose College, earning a bachelor of arts degree in 1969. He was the president of the Executive Council of Parents at St. Ambrose University. On Oct. 2 of this year, he received the Alumni Service Award for his dedicated service to the university. Memorials can be made to St. Ambrose University Senior Challenge of 1999. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sarah K. Salsbury, Sumner, Iowa; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Stephen Tubbs, Bettendorf; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark J. and Karin Salsbury, Niceville, Fla., and James D. and Teresa Salsbury, Davenport; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loretta and James. May they rest in peace.

Richard Ortscheid
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Richard C. Ortscheid, of Rock Island, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery mausoleum, Rock Island. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a wake at 6 p.m. Mr. Ortscheid died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at his home. He retired in 1986 as a senior designer after 25 years at Deere & Co. He was born April 29, 1935, in Rockford, Ill. He married Diane DeMeyer in 1956 in Moline. Memorials may be made to ALS Research or the church. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Eva Schafer and Carol Merriman, both of Rock Island, and Julie Stone, Reynolds, Ill.; sons, Rick, St. Charles, Mo., and Bill, Rock Island; 11 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Carolyn Strong, Sterling, Ill.

Richard Allender
DAVENPORT -- Services for Richard E. Allender, of Davenport, will be 3 p.m. Monday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Visitation is Monday from 1 p.m. until time of service. Mr. Allender died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, after a brief struggle with cancer. He was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Davenport, to Frederick E. and Hilda I. (Bensch) Allender. He married Hazel Schumacher on Nov. 20, 1948, in Clinton, Iowa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific in World War II. He retired from American Air Filter in 1972 as a draftsman, and later worked at Red Jacket Pump. He was a square dance caller for 10 years in Iowa and Illinois. Mr. Allender held several patents for drafting designs. He had an interest in history and music, and was a wildlife enthusiast. Memorials may be made to the Scott County Humane Society or Iowa Public Television Network. Surviving are his wife, Hazel; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy Spring and David Wernecke, Baraboo, Wis.; sons and daughter-in-law, Warren R. and Susi Allender, Elkhart, Ind., and Douglas R. Allender, Palisade, Colo.; grandchildren, Kristine Vrondron, and Amy and Erin Allender; and a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Mervin Saunders, Nashua, N.H.

Stephanie Scott
PASADENA, Calif. -- Stephanie J. Scott, of Pasadena, formerly of Davenport, died Sept. 24, 1999, at Huntington Memorial, Pasadena. Services were Sept. 29 at Second Baptist Church, Monrovia. Burial is in Mountain View Cemetery , Altadena. She was employed as a hair stylist at Just In Time, Pasadena. She was born Dec. 6, 1956, in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include a special friend, William Jenkins; a son, Sean Davis, Pasadena; two grandchildren; sisters, Marva and Kimberly Scott, both of Davenport; and brothers, Lilburn and Kenneth Scott, both of Davenport, and Booker Scott, Seattle.

Robert Newlin
MOLINE -- Services for Robert L. Newlin, of 3331 43rd Ave., will be 2 p.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church, Moline. No visitation will be held. Mr. Newlin died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at his home. Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, is in charge of arrangements. He was employed as an assembler at Export Packaging, Milan, Ill. He retired in 1998. He was born June 8, 1960, in Moline. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include a sister, Sandra Newlin, Moline.

Cyril Schissel
BETTENDORF -- Services for Cyril G. Schissel, of Bettendorf Health Care Center, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Davenport. Mr. Schissel died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at the center. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. He was employed as a laborer for various landscaping companies in the Quad-City area. He was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Winneshiek County, Iowa. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony's Care and Share. Survivors include a brother, Lee, Decorah, Iowa.

Fred McBain
MOLINE -- Services for Fred H. McBain, of Moline, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. McBain died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. He retired in 1972 as an assembler after 37 years at Deere & Co. He was born Jan. 12, 1912, in Moline. He married Margaret O'Neill in 1935 in Moline. She died Dec. 24, 1994. During World War II, he served in the Navy. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. . Survivors include a sister-in-law, Frances Reinke, Moline.

Joseph Pastorek
EAST MOLINE -- Services for Joseph A. Pastorek, of Crosstown Square, Silvis, Ill., formerly of East Moline, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline, where he was a member. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , East Moline. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Pastorek died Thursday Oct. 7, 1999, at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis. Joe retired in January 1970 as a drop hammer operator at International Harvester, East Moline Works. He was born July 22, 1911, in Czechoslovakia, to Andrew and Antoinette Pastorek. He married Rose Faraone on June 6, 1936, in Chicago. Joe was a member of the Tri-City and National dahlia societies, and was a master judge. He was a widely known area taxidermist and was a wonderful gardener. Joe was a painter and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Memorials may be made to Cleary Hall Building Fund. Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Norman and Janice Pastorek, Manhattan, N.Y., and Joseph Jr. and Cathy Pastorek, Silvis; and grandchildren, Angela, Nicholas, Andrew, Kate and Kelly. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rena, who died in 1964.

Trevor Petersen
WALCOTT, Iowa -- Services for Trevor Alan Petersen-week-old son of Terry A. and Danna (Dresselhaus) Petersen, of Walcott, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Trevor died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. He was born Sept. 9, 1999, in Davenport. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or University of Iowa Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Danielle, Walcott; grandparents, Glenn and Elizabeth Dresselhaus, Davenport, and Richard and Dee Petersen, Davenport; great-grandparents, Mary Dresselhaus, Davenport, Arnold and Evelyn Petersen, Davenport, and Gladys Palmer, Davenport; godparents, Jennifer O'Hare-Marker, Hampton, Ill., and Mark Dresselhaus, Iowa City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dallas Blythe
BETTENDORF -- Dallas C. Blythe, of Bettendorf, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Blythe retired in 1982 as a process engineer at Caterpillar Tractor Co. He was born July 5, 1927, in Oxford Junction, Iowa, to Raymond and Erma (Wilkens) Blythe. He married Eleanor M. Mizlo on June 10, 1950, in Bettendorf. During the Korean War, he served in the Navy on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dallas C. Blythe Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas; sisters, Dorothy Milota and Eleanor Leslie, both of Oxford Junction; a brother, David, DeWitt, Iowa; a special niece and nephew, Ardith and Martin Frandsen, Bettendorf; a special grandniece, Carley Mizlo, Rock Island; special friends, Haley and Judy McLeran, Saginaw, Texas; and special neighbors, Art Anderson, Jack Schwertmann Sr. and Steve Tometich, all of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jeanette Hook
MORRISON, Ill. -- Services for Jeanette D. Hook, of 410 Portland Ave., will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Morrison Chapel of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery , Morrison. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hook died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North, Clinton, Iowa. She retired in 1996 after 26 years with General Electric, Morrison. Jeanette Tiesman was born Feb. 23, 1932, in Morrison. She married Donald Hook in 1948 in Morrison. He died in 1986. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Janet Wierick, Warshaw, Ind., and Robyn Gibbs and Happy Hook, both of Morrison; sons, Randy, Rock Falls, and James and Eric, both of Clinton; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Buikema, Morrison; and brothers, Claus Tiesman, Leesburg, Fla, Tom Tiesman, Rosco, Ill., Harlan Tiesman, Bloomingdale, Ill., Ron Tiesman, Rock Falls, John Tiesman, Morrison, Bob Tiesman, Lyndon, and Kenneth Tiesman, Phoenix.

IOWA CITY -- Memorial services for Ernest V. Zuber Jr., of Laughlin, Nev., formerly of Iowa City, will be 11 a.m. Monday at George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium, Iowa City. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. until service time. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Mr. Zuber died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Kingman, Ariz., Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Davenport. He married Barbara "Bobbi" Ellis in 1947 in Davenport. During World War II, he served in the Navy. He was the associate dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Business Administration at the University of Iowa. He stepped down in 1984 but continued to serve as an assistant professor of finance until retiring from the university in 1988. In earlier years, he owned and operated Ernie's Clip Joint, a barber shop. He had served as an advisor to student athletes interested in the College of Business Administration as well as on the Maytag Foundation Scholarship Committee and Iowa City City Council. Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Debbie Fisher, Newton, Iowa; brothers, Tom, Blue Grass, Iowa, Arvid, Kansas City, Mo., and Dick and Tony Zuber, both of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two granddaughters; and sisters, Jean Hill, Davenport, and Judy Wesenberg, Urbandale, Iowa.
