LONGVIEW, Texas -- Services and burial for Leonard E. Johnson, of Longview, will be Wednesday in Longview. Visitation is today at Rader Funeral Home, Longview. Mr. Johnson died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, after a long battle with cancer. He retired after 34 years at Natural Gas Pipeline Co. in Illinois and Texas. He was born July 20, 1923, in Geneseo, Ill. He married Lois Shaw in 1950 in Green River, Ill. Survivors include his wife; daughter, Jan Crawford, Alexandria, Va., and Beth Merrill, Littleton, Colo.; a son, Scott, Dallas; a granddaughter; sisters, Helen Johnson and Lauretta Young, both of Geneseo; and a brother, R. Carrol, Belle Plaine, Iowa.

Marjorie Thomas
CLINTON, Iowa -- Marjorie M. Thomas, of the Alverno Health Care Facility, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the care facility. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery , Camanche. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the church. Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge of arrangements. She was employed as an elementary teacher and principal in Clinton schools. Marjorie Mayer was born Feb. 25, 1913, in Lyons. She married Marvin Thomas in 1947 in Clinton. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Jane Harding, Clinton; sons, Dr. David, Marshalltown, John, Camanche, and Paul, Eldora; 25 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; sisters, Donna Stelling, Greenville, S.C., and Claire Kallenbach, Port Clinton, Ohio; and brothers, Alan Mayer, Clinton, and Richard Mayer, Peoria, Ill.

Ernest Bobek
CLINTON, Iowa -- Ernest F. Bobek, of 3412 Cleveland St., died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at his home. Private memorial services will be held at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton. No visitation will be held. Mr. Bobek was employed as a manager at Goodman's Jewelry Store, Clinton, and as a sales associate in advertising at the Clinton Herald. He retired in 1982. He was born July 28, 1923, in Mason City. He married Marjorie Smith in 1947 in Mason City. During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps with the 2nd Division 1st Platoon on Guadalcanal. Memorials may be made to Hospice VNA, Clinton. Survivors include his wife; sons, Stephen, Coralville, William, Toronto, Canada, and Jeffrey, Barrington; a stepson, Woodrow Kline, Chillicothe, Mo.; two grandsons; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Blanche Vician, Placerville, Calif., and Emily Byl, Mason City.

Wilma Farnsworth
GALVA, Ill. -- Wilma D. Farnsworth, of Galva, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Toulon Health Care Center. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Rux Funeral Home, Galva. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery . Wilma Weers was born Feb. 20, 1919, in Lacon. She married Robert Farnsworth in 1950 in Cambridge. They owned and operated East Gate Bowling Lanes for many years. He died in 1973. She also was employed as a clerk at Murnen's Dress Shop, Galva. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society. Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Bill Gillis
ERIE, Ill. -- Services for Bill A. Gillis, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Erie, will be 10 a.m. Friday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Mr. Gillis died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at his home. He retired as a machinist at Rock Island Arsenal. He was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Rose Marie Dickey in 1948. During World War II, he served in the Army. He received a Bronze Star Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart. Memorials may be made to Baby Fold, Bloomington, or Hospice of Lake and Sumter Counties. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Tina Penney, Moline; sons, Terry L., Erie, B. Alan, Bloomington, and Dane M., Moline; eight granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Keith, Bentonville, Ark.

Raymond Morris
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Raymond A. Morris, of Muscatine, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery , Muscatine, with military services by Muscatine Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1545 and American Legion Post 27 combined units. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Morris died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Muscatine Care Center. He worked on the farm for many years and at City Hall, Heinz Manufacturing and Muscatine Memorial Park. He was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Kirksville, Mo. He married Eunice Hall. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include a sister, Mary Yordt, Muscatine.

Ruth Gould
NEPONSET, Ill. -- Ruth L. Gould, of Neponset, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Meadows Mennonite Nursing Home, Chenoa. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery , Neponset. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Gould taught grade school in Neponset for 30 years. Ruth Dahl was born March 3, 1908, in Neponset. She married Melvin Gould in 1930. He preceded her in death. Memorials may be made to Neponset Historical Society or Neponset United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Dunahee, Lexington; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Iral Ellyson
WEST BRANCH, Iowa -- Memorial services for Iral T. Ellyson, of 39 Greenview Drive, will be 3 p.m. Sunday at West Branch Friends Church. The body was cremated. Burial will be in West Branch Cemetery . Mr. Ellyson died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City, after a battle with leukemia. Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born March 28, 1923, on the farm four miles north of West Branch where his grandfather, Sewell Ellyson, moved near the turn of the century. He married Judith McLean in 1967 in West Branch. They farmed until 1978 and retired in 1988 from Cargill. He served in the Army during peacetime. Memorials may be made to West Branch Friends Church or Iowa City Free Medical Clinic. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Robyn Hunter, West Branch; sons, Raymond T., Hampstead, Md., and Brian W., Grove City, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Eva Stevens
DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Services for Eva L. Wilcox Stevens, of Bethany Home, Dubuque, formerly of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery , Maquoketa. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. today at Carson & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Maquoketa. Mrs. Stevens died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the home. She worked at Jackson State Bank, Maquoketa, as a teller for 10 years. She was also a homemaker, and assisted her husband John in the operation of Wilcox Paint Store, Maquoketa. Eva Sagers was born April 13, 1910, near Iron Hill. She married John Wilcox in 1935. He died in 1974. She married John Stevens in 1978 in Arlington Heights. He died in 1979. A memorial fund has been established in her name. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Edleman, Dubuque; a stepdaughter, Sue Dunn, Oakbrook; a son, Boyd Wilcox, Corvallis, Ore.; four grandsons; two step-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; and one step-great-grandson; a sister, Maxine Goodwnow, Maquoketa; and a brother, John Sagers, Cedar Rapids.

Osmind Carlson
MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Osmind L. "Swede" Carlson, of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery , Maquoketa. There will be no public visitation. Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Carlson died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa. He had worked a millwright at Aluminum Company of America, Riverdale, for 23 years, and had farmed since 1978. He was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Orland, Sweden. He married Evelyn Laffey-Becker in 1962 in Illinois. During World War II, he served in the Navy in Submarine Service on the USS Peto and USS Bowfin. A memorial fund will be established. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Carlson, Maquoketa; a daughter, Lauren; an adopted daughter, Lynn; stepdaughters, Lewann and Shelley; sons, Lane and Lance; an adopted son, Larry; and grandchildren.

Alice Otlmanns
CLINTON, Iowa -- Alice E. Oltmanns, of Clinton, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North Clinton Campus. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery , Monticello. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Schmitz Funeral Home, Clinton. She was employed with Swift Co., and the Clinton Corn Processing Co., prior to owning and operating a restaurant on Eighth Street. Alice Elma was born in Nov. 15, 1913, in Monmouth. She married Henry Oltmanns in 1936 in Omaha, Neb. He died in 1972. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the kitchen of the fellowship hall at Trinity Lutheran Church, 656 5th Ave. South, Clinton. Survivors include daughters, Jeanette Glahn, Camanche, and Barbara Haley, Clinton; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Leo McAvon
DELMAR, Iowa -- Services for Leo B. McAvon, of Delmar, will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Home, DeWitt. Cremation will follow the services and burial will be at a later date. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday prior to services at the funeral home. Mr. McAvon died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa. He was a self-employed appliance repairman and a farmer. He was born April 10, 1927, in Clinton. He married Shirley Truelsen in 1948 in DeWitt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family or Hospice. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, Delmar; sons, Dale, DeWitt, Gary, Delmar, and Mark, Red Wing, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren.

Glenda Sue Thorp
SHERRARD, Ill. -- Services for Glenda Sue Thorp, of Sherrard, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Thorp died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Seymour Jackson Memorial Hospital, as a result of an auto accident. She was a homemaker. Glenda Boles was born April 11, 1947, in Fayette, Mo. She married David Thorp in 1962 in Kansas City, Mo. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Shawn Wyant, Sherrard, and Kristin Thorp, Moline; sons, Ryan Thorp Sr., Kansas City, and Gary Thorp, of Florida; five grandchildren; sisters, Betty Reasor, Cabot, Ark., and Thelma Purdon, Kansas City; and a brother, Henry Boles, Janesville, Wis.

Terrance O'Brien
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for Terrance R. "Terry" O'Brien, of Kewanee, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery , Kewanee, where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. A wake service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Mr. O'Brien died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. He was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Regina, Canada. He married Mary L. McCauley in 1946 in Bettendorf. He had worked as a coal miner for Midland Coal, retiring in 1978. He was a Navy veteran, serving in the European Theater. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Candice Zapisek, Peoria, and Pamela Purcell, Phoenix; sons, Terrance Jr., Altona, Iowa, Shawn, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Mark, Peoria; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Knapper, Hackensack, Minn., Cecilia Hoard, Fairfield, Iowa, Pat Caldwell, Davenport, Sarah Leudt, Moline, and Rosie Rodgers, East Moline; and a brother, Edward, Moline.

Linda Shields
NEW WINDSOR, Ill. -- Services for Linda A. "Sissy" Shields, of New Windsor, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church, New Windsor. Burial will be in Greenbush Cemetery , rural Swedona. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Family Funeral Services, Viola. Mrs. Shields died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at her home. She worked for the Oak Glen Nursing Home, in the residence apparel department, for the past 18 years. Linda Patrick was born Jan. 17, 1954, in Rock Island. She married Dan Shields in 1970 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include her husband, Dan Shield, New Windsor; a daughter, Denise Newberry, Aledo; sons, Chadwick Shields, Aledo, and Gabriel Shields, New Windsor; three grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou Taylor, Taylor Ridge; and brothers, John Patrick, Moline, and Terry Patrick, Milan.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Hanson died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at her home. She worked at Clinton Engines, Maquoketa, and Kirsch Window Treatments. For more than 20 years, she worked as a certified nurses aide at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa, and the Maquoketa Care Center, retiring in 1993. Lois Carr was born Nov. 25, 1934, in Iowa City. She married Richard Hanson in 1968 in Rock Island. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Mr. Matthys died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the Kahl Home for the Aged, Davenport. He was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Moline, to Ernest and Augusta (Ver Vack) Matthys. He married Phyllis DeCook on Feb. 10, 1945, at St. Mary's Church, Davenport. Mr. Matthys was chairman of the Buffalo Savings Bank, Buffalo, Iowa. His banking career extended more than 50 years at the Buffalo Bank. He was a member of the Iowa Bankers Association, American Bankers Association, Iowa Independent Bankers Association and Scott County Bankers Association. He was also a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport, Elks and Moose. During World War II, he served in the Navy. He was a member of the Buffalo VFW Post 6078. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Community Center, Kahl Home for the Aged, St. Peters Catholic Church or St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. DAVENPORT -- Services for Harold J. Gordon, of Davenport, formerly of Bettendorf, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Internment will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary chapel prior to services. Mr. Gordon died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Davenport. Harold James Gordon was born Feb. 11, 1906, in South Sioux City, Neb., to James and Lillial (Lampson) Gordon. He married Doris Priestley on July 19, 1926, in South Sioux City. He was self employed as an upholster for many years and owned and operated both H. Gordon Upholstery and also Associated Upholstery, retiring in 1980. In earlier years, he worked as one of the first gasoline haulers in the entire Midwest to utilize a motor truck. He also worked for a number of years at Aluminum Company of America, Riverdale, in the security department. Mr. Gordon was a member of the Muscatine Masonic Lodge 641 and also was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf. Survivors include his wife, Doris Gordon, of 73 years, Bettendorf; grandsons, Grant Gordon, Bettendorf, Clark Gordon, Melbourne, Iowa, and Mark Gordon, Davenport; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Gordon, Bettendorf; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jack Gordon; and a brother, Kenneth Gordon.
