CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Mildred R. Brown, of Belvidere, Ill., formerly of Clinton, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Schmitz Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery , Clinton. Visitation is 3-6 p.m. Monday and noon until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Brown died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Maplecrest Nursing Home, Belvidere. She was employed more than 10 years as a bookkeeper at the former Mercy Hospital, Clinton. She retired in 1980. Mildred Smith was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Clinton. She married Robert Brown in 1928 in DeKalb County, Ill. He died in 1977. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Delores Cram, Belvidere, Ginny Belt-Zook, Lakewood, Calif., and Jackie Leahy, Circleville, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Margaret Simons and Betty Ugarph, both of Clinton.

Julius Geest
DAVENPORT -- Memorial services for Julius Geest will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Runge Mortuary , Davenport. Fraternal Lodge 221 will conduct services. Mr. Geest died Nov. 7, 1999, at Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to Mohassan Grotto Humanitarian Fund.

Joseph Hanson
IOWA CITY -- Joseph T. Hanson, of Iowa City, formerly of Fulton, Ill., died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, after an automobile accident near Iowa City. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Open Door, Clinton. Burial will be in Fulton Township Cemetery , Fulton. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday at the church. Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hanson was employed as a sales representative at MCI and also was a writer. He most recently was working on two novels. He was born March 7, 1975, in Clinton. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his parents, Gary and Yvonne Hanson, Fulton; a sister, Sarah Duey, Dundee, Ill.; brothers, Bryan, Davenport, and Aaron, Fulton; and grandparents, Dorothy Kelly and Rose and Oliver Warren, all of Sterling, Ill.

John Cottral
SAVANNA, Ill. -- Services for John F. "Jack" Cottral, of Savanna, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery , Savanna. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, with a parish Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Cottral died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. He retired in 1988 as a trainman after 43 years at Milwaukee Railroad. He was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Savanna. He married Barbara Brown in 1949 in Savanna. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Peg Haffey, Savanna, Pat Kelley, Thomson, and Pam Hebeler and Cindy Workman, both of Fulton; sons, Dan, Rock Island, and David, Savanna; 15 grandchildren; a sister, Jean Davis, Savanna; and a brother, Dan, Hanover.

Joe Simpson
ZWINGLE, Iowa -- Services for Joe Simpson, of Zwingle, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery , Zwingle. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Simpson died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at his home. He owned and operated his own electrical business for more than 45 years. Before that, he was employed as an electrician at John Deere Dubuque Works and worked at Clinton Engines, Maquoketa. He was born March 27, 1928, on the family farm at the foot of Timmish's Hill. He married Jerry Collins in 1955 in Maquoketa. She died in 1991. He had served with the Navy in China and the South Pacific. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Rohwedder, Baldwin; a son, Tom, Maquoketa; five grandchildren; and a brother, Paul, Zwingle.

Gordon Mullins
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Gordon W. Mullins, retired to Las Cruces, entered eternal life on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999. Gordon was born Nov. 5, 1930, in Davenport, to John and Mildred Mullins, who preceded him in death. Gordon graduated from Davenport High School and attended St. Ambrose College before joining the Armed Forces. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS San Marcos during the Korean War, and retired from the Rock Island Arsenal. Gordon enjoyed table tennis and played in the Senior Olympics. Gordon is survived by his wife of more than 48 years, Bettijane McCoy Mullins; seven children, Rick, Las Vegas, Debra Valice, Houston, Mark, Davenport, Rebecca Hughes, Davenport, Michael, Houston, Matthew, Springfield, Mo., and Michelle Vacio, Las Cruces; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A 21-gun salute will accompany his 11 a.m. burial service on Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal.

Georgette Hines
DAVENPORT -- Services for Georgette A. Hines, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Midway Tabernacle, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Mrs. Hines died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Georgette Bernauer was born Feb. 2, 1945, in Davenport. She married Clif Morgan in 1961 in Davenport. She married Robert Hines in 1986 in Davenport. Memorials may be made to Lou Gehrig Foundation. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Susan Gregory, Clinton, Iowa, and Cindy Tyler and Ginger Morgan, both of Davenport; a son, Gerald Morgan, Davenport; stepsons, Ted Hines and Robert Hines Jr., both of Davenport; 18 grandchildren; a great-grandson; sisters, Sandy Merriman and Victoria Cox, both of Davenport; brothers, Larry Bernauer and Jerry Agnew Jr., both of Davenport; her stepfather, Jerry Agnes, Davenport; and her mother, Susie Agnew.

Florence Tucker
ALBANY, Ill. -- Services for Florence L. Tucker, of 508 N. Bluff St., will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Albany, preceded by a 9:45 a.m. family prayer service at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton. Burial will be in Calvary Hill Cemetery , Fulton. Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with a vigil at 8 p.m. Mrs. Tucker died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton. She retired in 1970 after 25 years as a purchasing agent and eight years as a bookkeeper at Clinton Auto Parts. Florence Johannsen was born May 14, 1910, in Clinton. She married Harvey Tucker in 1936 in Fulton. He died in 1987. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include a sister, Helen Hurlburt, Clinton, and caregivers, Lyle and Chris Buis, Fulton.

Ferdinand Bynum
ROCK ISLAND -- Services for Ferdinand N. Bynum, of Rock Island, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with an Elks service at 6 p.m. Mr. Bynum died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. He retired in 1983 as an animal control officer at Rock Island Animal Shelter. In his early years, he played on the Morocco Club baseball team. He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in New Orleans. He had served in the Army. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Survivors include sisters, Viola Johnson, Quincy, Ill., and Vicie Stovall, Rock Island; and brothers, Max Smith, Rock Island, and Edward Smith, Davenport.

Ellen Lett
WILTON, Iowa -- Services for Ellen C. Lett, of Wilton, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery , Wilton. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Lett died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Davenport Good Samaritan Center. She was retired from CDS, Wilton, and had raised schnauzers for many years. Ellen Saunders was born Sept. 6, 1931, in Clinton County. She married Raymond "Zeke" Lee in Calamus. He preceded her in death. She married Darold Lett in 1976 in Durant. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society and Beacon of Hope Hospice, Davenport. Survivors include her husband; a son, Lynn Lee, Walcott; a stepdaughter, Donna Brockmeyer, Allegan, Mich.; stepsons, Richard Lett, Alverado, Texas, and DeWayne Lett, Wilton; nine grandchildren; and sisters, Lorraine Rumsower, of Arizona, Mardella Harvey, of California, Lois Boettcher, Lowden, Sarah Stafford, Blackwall, Okla., and Bernice Fullerton, Rockford, Iowa.

Elbert Wiebel
EAST MOLINE -- Elbert C. Wiebel, of Mission, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Memorial services will be later. The body will be cremated. Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Landis Jr.
MOLINE -- Services for Donald G. Landis Jr., of 2915 2nd St., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Monday at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Don died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, after a difficult battle with cancer. Don was born April 26, 1930, to Donald and Bess (Crowley) Landis. They both preceded him in death. He married Waldtraut Schild on Sept. 28, 1973, in Nidda, Germany. Don served four years in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed 34 years at Deere & Co. He retired in 1984 as Worldwide Manager of Photography. He traveled extensively throughout the world, spending many summers in Germany. He was a member Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. Upon retirement, Don donated his time serving the children at Moline public schools in many capacities. He enjoyed many hobbies, especially woodworking, photography and helping others. He especially enjoyed spending time with his 2nd Street neighbors. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Stephanie Landis, Moline, and Tamara Landis, Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Eric, Pensacola; his stepmother, Catherine Landis, Rock Island; a step-uncle and aunt, Bob and Gloria Bamman, Rock Island; and brothers-in-law, Haubold, Bodo and Detlef Schild and their families in Germany, as well as a sister-in-law, Beate Albiez-Schild and her family in Switzerland. He leaves behind many special friends in the United States and Europe.

Carl Erickson
ATKINSON, Ill. -- Services for Carl W. Erickson, of Atkinson, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery , Atkinson, with military services by Atkinson American Legion. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Erickson died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at his home. He had been a police officer for many years in several communities. He was police chief of Atkinson from 1977 to 1981. After that, he was employed 16 years with State of Illinois Highway Department. He retired in 1998. He was born May 28, 1937, in Chicago. He married Jean Neuleib in 1959 in Des Moines. During the Korean War, he served in the Army. Memorials may be left to Atkinson Rescue Squad or Atkinson Baseball Association. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Cathy VanOpDorp and Penny Erickson, both of Atkinson; a son, Scott, Davenport; two grandchildren; his parents, Carl Sr. and Elizabeth Erickson, Atkinson; a sister, Vicki Oberholtzer, Romeoville; and brothers, Jim, Lincoln, Neb., and John, Romeoville.

Benjamin Petty
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Benjamin Kyle Petty, infant son of Randy and Tommye "Jackie" (Santos) Petty, of Muscatine, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Benjamin Kyle was stillborn Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Tommye Felicia, and a brother, William J. "Joey," both at home; and grandparents, Felix and Tommye Santos, Muscatine, and Kenneth and Judy Petty, Venus, Texas.

Alice Varner
MOLINE -- Services for Alice C. Varner, of 509 4th St., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moline Gospel Temple. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-6 p.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., Moline. Mrs. Varner died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Alice Muller was born June 29, 1914, in San Francisco. She married Paul Varner in 1945 in Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Moline Gospel Temple. Survivors include her husband; sons, Paul P., Dubuque, Iowa, and John, Moline; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Schiedel, Glendale, Calif.

Mary Ralston
ALPHA, Ill. -- Services for Mary E. Ralston, of Alpha, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Alpha Baptist Church. Visitation is noon until service time. Burial will be in Alexis Cemetery . Mrs. Ralston died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at her home. Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home, Alpha, is in charge of arrangements. Mary Caulkins was born Feb. 15, 1930, in South Bend, Ind. She married John Ralston in 1949 in Alexis. He died in 1982. Survivors include a daughter, Beth Depew, Alpha; sons, Clinton, Woodhull, and Christopher, New Windsor; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, Frank Caulkins, Brimfield, Russell Caulkins, Coal Valley, Lloyd Hampton, Valentine, Va., Alva Caulkins, Taylor Ridge, and Dale Caulkins, Clayton.

Richard Byrd
CARBON CLIFF, Ill. -- Services for Richard Byrd, of Carbon Cliff, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral, Coal Valley. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Byrd died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at his home. He was employed as a truck driver at Danaway Charter Line, Crown Transit, Raliegh Line and most recently by Adrian Carriers, from which he retired from in 1994. He was born Dec. 24, 1929, in Toulon. He married Shirley Shaw in 1952 in Kewanee. He served in the Army in Germany and France and also during the Korean conflict. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Beverly Thompson, Davenport, Evelyn Shroyer, Farmersville, Paula Strain, Carbon Cliff, and Tracy Byrd, New Boston; sons, Randall, Moline, and Richard Jr., Carbon Cliff; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Ellen Byrd, Silvis; a sister, Mary Frances Race; and a brother, Jack, both of East Moline.

James Cox
DeWITT, Iowa -- Services for James E. "Sonny" Cox, of DeWitt, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery , DeWitt, Iowa. Visitation is 4-8 p. m. Monday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Before retirement, Sonny was a barber and owned and operated Cox Barber Shop. Mr. Cox died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at DeWitt Community Hospital. He was born Jan. 27, 1906, in DeWitt. He married Charlene Phillips in 1932 in DeWitt. A memorial has been established. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Nancy Capper, DeWitt, Diane Simmon, Manchester; a son, Chuck, DeWitt, Iowa; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Chrisetta Paulsen, West Branch; and brothers, Bob, San Fransisco, John "Jack," Camanche.

Mary Curnyn
GENESEO, Ill. -- Mary A. Curnyn, of Geneseo, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. Burial will be in North Cemetery , Geneseo. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers Chapel, Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Geneseo, where a parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Mary A. Cochran was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Rock Island, the daughter of William and Rose (Woods) Cochran. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Nauvoo, in 1931. She married Ardo F. Curnyn on Nov. 24, 1932, in Rock Island. He died on Oct. 8, 1978. Mrs. Curnyn was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church and an honorary member and past president of Circle 5 of the church. She also was a member and past president of Columbian Club, Geneseo. She enjoyed traveling. Memorials may be made to St. Malachy's Catholic School. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Arnold and Peggy Curnyn, Arlington Heights, Jerry and Mary Curnyn, Rock Island, Robert and Marsha Curnyn, Kailua, Hawaii, and Tom and Mary Curnyn, Geneseo. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and a great granddaughter. Her husband, a grandson and two sisters preceded her in death.
