EAST MOLINE -- Services for Thelma Spore, formerly of East Moline, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Moline. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Mrs. Spore died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Forest Hill Care Center, East Moline. Thelma Gravitt was born April 19, 1907, in Clinton, Mo. She married Joseph Spore in 1925 in Rio, Ill. He died in 1969. Most of her life, she and her husband farmed around the Coal Town Road area. Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Survivors include daughters, Betty Boon, Peoria, Ariz., and Bonnie Stewart, Moline; a son, James, Moline; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Cora Lee Taylor, Rock Island; and a brother, Arthur Gravitt, Coal Valley, Ill.

August Mattan Jr.
ALBANY, Ill. -- Services for August C. "Augie" Mattan Jr., of 503 11th Ave., will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church, Clinton. The body will be cremated after the service. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Saturday at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton. Mr. Mattan died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. He owned and operated Mattan Excavating and was the Meredocia Pumping Station operator for 40 years from 1957-97. He was born Nov. 9, 1937, in Colona. He married Judith Brown in 1960 in Clinton. He married Susan Kirst in 1985 in Nashua, Iowa. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve. Memorials may be made to the church or United Way Kidney Foundation. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Becky Mattan Pratt, Boone, Iowa, Claire Mattan, Kansas City, Mo.; sons, Tony Mattan, Columbia, Mo., and James, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; stepsons, Brent Judd, Hopkins, Minn., and Brian Judd, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a grandson; his father, August Mattan Sr., Cordova; sisters, Mary Bell, McClurg, Mo., and JoAnn Snodgrass, Morrison; and brothers, Richard, Geneseo, Donald, Grapevine, Texas, Joseph, Pekin, and Emil, Andalusia.

Mary Simpson
MOLINE -- Services for Mary Simpson, of Moline, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church, Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline. Mrs. Simpson died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Mary Stephens was born Sept. 12, 1908, in Sedalia, Mo. She married Paul Simpson in 1928. He died in 1963. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include daughters, Virginia Dodos, Santa Maria, Calif., Ruth Simpson and Glenda Simler, both of Moline; a son, Bob Simpson, Rock Island; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marguerite Bourne, St. Louis.

Sheryl Wulf
CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Sheryl A. Wulf, of 613 12th Ave. N., will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery , Clinton. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. today at Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory. Mrs. Wulf died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North Campus, Davenport, after an 18-month illness. She was employed as a registered nurse at the University of Minnesota and as an emergency room nurse in Hennepin County before moving to Clinton in 1972. She was employed two years as house supervisor at the former Jane Lamb Memorial Hospital, Clinton. Sheryl Wisneski was born July 26, 1948, in Denison. She married Dale Wulf in 1971 in Sauk Rapids, Minn. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Clarice Blanchard and Bethany Wulf; a sister, Kathleen Gunerius, Coon Rapids, Minn.; and a brother, Gary Wisneski, Ankeny.

Francis Carraher
DeWITT, Iowa -- Graveside memorial services for Francis Carraher, of DeWitt, and formerly of Lost Nation, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Cemetery , Lost Nation.

John 'Hook' Young
DAVENPORT -- Services for John "Hook" Young, of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. An honor guard from the American Legion Post 246 will be present. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Young died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. He worked for Rath Packing and Bishop's Cafeteria before taking charge as chef of the Palmer University cafeteria for 30 years, retiring in 1974. He considered Dr. Dave Palmer a friend. He was born Jan. 22, 1909, in Huron, S.D., to James and Anna (Mayne) Young. He acquired the name "Hook" in 1926 as a basketball player with a great hook shot. He married Gladys Allen on June 1, 1946, in Davenport. She died Feb. 16, 1997. He joined the Army Air Forces in 1942, and served until 1945. He was very proud of the fact that he achieved the rank of sergeant. John recently made a large donation to the World War II Memorial Fund through American Legion Post 246, Moline. Mr. Young was a 46-year-member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the Elks and a 15-year-member of the Davenport Moose Lodge 26. He was a 30-year member of the Izaak Walton League, a charter member of the North American Fishing Club and Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, Ducks Unlimited, and a member of the Wild Turkey Federation. He was registered in the Realm of the Golden Dragon. John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed reading. Memorials may be made to the World War II Memorial Fund through the American Legion Post 246. It was his wish that people give him a thought when their donation is made. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Alice McKinley, Fallbrook, Calif.; a niece, Sandra Wilt, Panama City, Fla.; a great-niece, Betsy Wilt, Panama City; nephews, Dale Allen, Kansas City, Mo., and Dean and Robert Allen, Waterloo, Iowa; and many longtime friends. May he rest in peace.

Elmore 'Doc' Lawson
DAVENPORT -- Family memorial services for Elmore E. "Doc" Lawson, of Davenport, will be held at a later date. The body will be cremated. Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Lawson died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. He was employed at Roederer Transfer for seven years and at Poole Co. for 26 years, where he was manager. He retired from Roadway Express in 1973. after they purchased the Poole Co. He was born on Dec. 2, 1908, in Rushville, Ind. He married Beulah Morgan in 1929 in Anderson, Ind. Memorials may be made to the Genesis Visiting Nurses. Survivors include his wife; a son, Gary Lawson, Indianapolis; and a niece, LaVerne Weber, also of Indianapolis.

Richard Larsen
BETTENDORF -- Richard A. Larsen, of Bettendorf, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at his home after an extended illness. A memorial gathering of family and friends to celebrate Richard's life will be held 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Richard A. Larsen was born Oct. 12, 1940, in Centerville, Iowa, to Dr. and Mrs. E.A. Larsen. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa. He graduated with a bachelor of arts degree with a double major in economics and political science. He received his juris doctorate from the University of Iowa Law School in 1966. He was a former Davenport assistant city attorney, an attorney with the Law Firm of Dircks and Berger, and in private practice as a sole proprieter d.b.a, Larsen Law Office, Davenport. He was a member of the Scott County Bar Association, and the Scott County Compensation Board. He was an avid golfer, sports enthusiast and dog lover and a contract bridge player and a member of the Quad-City Bridge Club and a Lifemaster. Richard A. Larsen married Barbara Lora on May 1, 1991, in Bettendorf. Survivors include his wife, Barbara, Bettendorf; a son, Steven R. Larsen, Bettendorf; daughters, Laurie Carlson, Davenport, Leslie Carlson, Moline, and Michelle Lora, Davenport; granddaughters, Chelsea and Abby; and a sister, Linda I. Mueller, Dillon, Colo.; and a nephew, Daron R. Mueller, Boulder, Colo. His parents preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

Dagmar 'Doc' Jones
CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Dagmar "Doc" Jones, of Eagle Point Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, formerly of 419 15th Ave. S., will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clinton. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery , Clinton. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the Clinton Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory, Clinton. Mrs. Jones died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at the center. She worked in the housekeeping department at the Jane Lamb Hospital after her husband's death for 18 years. She also was employed by Northwestern Bell for seven years, retiring in 1978. She was born Dec. 12, 1898, in Clinton. She married Edgar Jones in 1922 in Clinton. He died in 1959. Survivors include a son, Duane Jones, Clinton; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Renee Wynkoop
CAMANCHE, Iowa -- Renee A. Wynkoop, of Camanche, died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Services will be noon Monday at Camanche Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery . Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Miss Wynkoop had worked at Frontier Motor Inn Restaurant, Clinton, and 3M plant, Cordova, Ill. She also was employed as a bookkeeper at Estes Co., Davenport, and Russell Construction Co., Bettendorf. Most recently, she was employed as a mail sorter and clerk for almost three years at the U.S. Post Office, Clinton. She was born May 3, 1970, in Clinton. Survivors include her parents, Richard and Nancy Wynkoop, Camanche; a brother, Anthony, at home; a special friend, with whom she shared a home, Kent Schreiber, Clinton; and grandparents, Charles Kaup, Clinton, and Ruby Wynkoop, Clinton.

Luther Jones
DAVENPORT -- Private family services for Luther M. Jones, of Davenport, will be Monday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Mr. Jones died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport, after an extended illness. In his younger years, he was an amateur boxer. He also enjoyed raising and training horses. He retired as a laborer for Local Union 309. During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps, Pacific Arena. He was born Dec. 25, 1924, in Mexico, Mo. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include daughters, Julie, Elizabeth, Trudi and Carrie, all of Davenport; sons, Gary, Todd and Philip, all of Davenport; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Bessie Ruffcorn
SHEFFIELD, Ill. -- Services for Bessie Ruffcorn, of Elgin, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Sheffield Chapel. Burial will be Sheffield Cemetery . There is no visitation. Mrs. Ruffcorn died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, in Elgin. She farmed for many years and then became a nurse's aid at Sherman Hospital, where she worked until she was 72. Bessie Norton was born Feb. 28, 1898, in the Sheffield area. She married Joe Ruffcorn. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Lowell; a sister Ruth; a brother, Tracy; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Gertrude McFadden
MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Gertrude R. McFadden, of Muscatine, will be 9 a.m. today at St. Mathias Catholic Church, Muscatine. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery , Muscatine. Mrs. McFadden died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Crescent Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine, is in charge of arrangements. She was born Jan. 16, 1912, in Muscatine. She married Lyle McFadden. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Durham, Richmond, Ky.; a son, Robert, Muscatine; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, June Langford and Betty Gross, both of California.

Bernice Wiemann
DAVENPORT -- Services for Bernice I. Wiemann, of Davenport, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Wiemann died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-North Campus, Davenport. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse and had worked eight years at Audubon County Hospital, three years at the RNA Retirement Home, seven years for the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, two years with the former Mercy Hospital and three years with the former St. Luke's Hospital. Bernice Crocker was born April 20, 1909, in Hobart, Okla., to Hubert H. and Daisy M. (Hunter) Crocker. She married Henry H. Wiemann on April 20, 1930, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Walcott, Iowa; Walcott Senior Citizens; and Royal Neighbors of America. Memorials may be made to Walcott Senior Citizens. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Ann Keeney, Davenport; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Tom Prachar, Davenport; sons, Ted H., Sioux City, Iowa, and Jon H., Costa Mesa, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gerald Simms
BLUE GRASS, Iowa -- Services for Gerald L. Simms, of Blue Grass, formerly of Rock Island, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. The Rev. Donald Gibson will officiate. Entombment will be in Rock Island Memorial Park mausoleum, with military services conducted by Milan Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Simms died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. He owned and operated Augie's Tap, Rock Island, since 1981. He was born Aug. 26, 1931, in Centerville, Iowa, to Charles and Marie (Close) Simms. He married Norma G. Davis on Dec. 21, 1968, in Davenport. She died March 20, 1981. He had served in the Navy. He enjoyed his grandchildren, farming and auctions. Survivors include his wife, Mary Adams; a daughter, Kathy Jean Sanchez, Davenport; a son, Larry Allen Simms; stepdaughters, Tamara Kruse and Tonia Hahn, both of Muscatine, Iowa; eight grandchildren; a sister, Beulah Mildren, Davenport; and brothers, Carl, Marion and Vernon Simms, all of Davenport. He also was preceded in death by his parents.

John Crecelius
DAVENPORT -- Services for John P. "Grizz" Crecelius, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 3:30-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Grizz died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at his sister's home in Davenport, after a brief illness and battle with cancer. John Paul Crecelius was born Dec. 28, 1946, in Davenport, to Jack L. and Anne (Schwarz) Crecelius. He married Connie Kotewa on Oct. 25, 1969, in Davenport. John graduated from Central High School Class of 1965. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War, where he was a door gunner. He had been a avid bowler, golfer and hunter. He also was a motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed riding his Harley. Family and friends had planned a benefit for Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Rusty Nail. They want you to know that it will still be held and please join them for live music and memories of Grizz. Survivors include a daughter, Dawn Crecelius, Eldridge, Iowa; a son, Josh Crecelius and his fianceé Lara McQuade, and daughters, Jamie, Erica and Jenny; his father, Jack L. Crecelius, Davenport; and a sister, Kim Crecelius, Davenport. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne Crecelius, on Jan. 21, 1998. May they rest in peace.

COLUMBUS JCT, Iowa -- Services for Genevieve Shellabarger, of Columbus Junction, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Indian Creek Cemetery . Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Monday with family present 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Shellabarger died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Colonial Manor Care Center, Columbus Junction. She was a homemaker. Genevieve Collins was born March 12, 1907, near Wapello. She married Harold Shellabarger in 1933. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Church. Survivors include her sons Harold, Steilacoom, Wash., and Charles; a daughter, Joyce Asay, Lanesville, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

ALEDO, Ill. -- Services for Emma Elizabeth Engwall, infant daughter of Jeffrey and Lisabeth Engwall, Fyre Lake, Sherrard, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Aledo Cemetery . Emma died at birth Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the New Windsor Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her parents; a sister, Allison Christine; grandparents, Charles and Patricia Lane, New Windsor, and Paul Engwall, Aledo; and a great-grandmother, Nettie Engwall, Aledo.
