WAUKEE, Iowa -- Services for Jeffrey A. Vens, of 540 Southfork Drive, formerly of Clinton, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, West Des Moines. Private burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Waukee Cemetery . Visitation is 5:30-8 p.m. today at the church, with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Vens died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at his home. Brooks Funeral Home, Clive, is in charge of arrangements. He had held several positions at Allied Insurance Co. He was born in Iowa City. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Clinton, and attended Mount St. Clare College, Clinton. He was a member of the St. Mary's Class A championship basketball team of 1975. He had lived in the Des Moines area since 1981. Mr. Vens was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Christ Renews His Parish and had coached with the Waukee Soccer League. His hobbies were fishing, skiing and golfing. He enjoyed coaching soccer and sports teams involving his family. Memorials may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Clinton County Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife, Karen; a daughter, Abby Vens, Waukee; a son, Cameron, Waukee; his parents, Raymond and Verla Vens, Clinton; sisters, Ellen Hayes, and Jean Mangan, both of Clinton, and Diane McConnell, Hills; and brothers, Randy and Chris, both of Clinton, and Mike, Mount Pleasant.

Elva Melton
MOLINE -- Memorial services for Elva R. Melton, formerly of Moline, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Hope United Church of Christ, Moline. No visitation will be held. Private burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Mrs. Melton died Nov. 6, 1999, in Yucaipa, Calif. Esterdahl. Mortuary Ltd., Moline, was in charge of arrangements. She was employed as a seamstress at J.C. Penney and Carson Pirie Scott. She retired in 1967. Elva Gillilan was born May 26, 1904, in rural Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She married Edmund Melton in 1923 in Marion, Iowa. He died in 1953. Memorials may be made to the church or American Cancer Society. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Anderson, Yucaipa; a son, Worth "Butch," Moline; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Julius Geest
DAVENPORT -- Memorial services for Julius Geest, of Davenport, will be 7 p.m. Nov. 23 at Runge Mortuary and Crematory, Davenport. Masonic services will be conducted at that time by Fraternal Lodge 221. Visitation will be 4:30 p.m. until time of service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Pine Hill Cemetery . Mr. Geest died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf. He retired in 1975 after 43 years at Ralston Purina, Davenport. He was born April 6, 1910, in Davenport. He married Josephine Woods in 1933 in Davenport. She died in 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Wakefield, Blue Grass, Iowa; sons Julius C., Davenport, and Jeffrey A., Grand Junction, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Paula Breeden
LeCLAIRE, Iowa -- Paula J. Breeden, of LeClaire, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Private services will be Wednesday. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Schroder Mortuary Inc., Silvis, Ill. She was an operator at AT&T, Davenport. Paula Alexander was born Aug. 26, 1954, in Moline. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include a daughter, Kerie Mora, Moline; two grandchildren; her parents, Kermit and Jean Alexander, Silvis; brothers, Robert Alexander, Barstow, Ill., and Allen Alexander, East Moline; and special friend, Kent Smith, LeClaire.

Ruthe Beckwith
BETTENDORF -- Services for Ruthe P. Beckwith, of Bettendorf, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Mrs. Beckwith died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Trinity Medical Center-North Campus, Davenport. Ruthe Pedigo was born June 14, 1924, in Rock Island. She married Carlo Serusa in 1945 in Rochester, N.Y. She married Daniel Gentile Sr. in 1957 in Erie, Pa. He died in 1987. She married Roger Beckwith in 1988 in Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Joanna Gillette, Bettendorf; sons, Carlo Serusa Jr., Yuba City, Calif., and Daniel Gentile Jr., Bettendorf; a sister, Henrietta Pedigo, Clarksville, Tenn.; and a brother, Phillip Pedigo, Memphis, Tenn.

William Stoltz
ROCK ISLAND -- William H. "Bill" Stoltz, of Rock Island, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island. The Rev. Tim Green will officiate. Visitation is 4-8 p.m.Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, and one hour before the service Thursday at the church. He was employed 21 years as a payroll clerk at Eagle Food Centers, Milan, Ill., and worked the past three years at United Parcel Service, Milan. Bill was born Oct. 26, 1956, in Aledo, Ill., to Donald and Mary (MacDonald) Stoltz. He married Cheryl "Cheri" Lynne Durkop on June 14, 1986, in Rock Island. He graduated from Westmer High School, Joy, Ill., and attended Western Illinois University. He was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. Bill enjoyed playing golf, watching Indy car racing and traveling, especially to Hawaii. Memorials may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Eric, Aledo, Ill.; sisters and brother-in-law, Katherine Day, Indianapolis, and Carolyn and Terry Strode, Kansas City, Mo.; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert Stoltz, Memphis, Tenn., and Gary and Marie Stoltz, Signal Hills, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Loretta Frieden
DAVENPORT -- Services for Loretta P. Frieden, of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Quint-City Baptist Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Mrs. Frieden died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at her home, after a brief illness. She was employed as a baker for many years at the Eldridge Slagles Super Market and the Park View Supervalu food stores. She retired in 1993. Loretta Pauline Young was born June 28, 1931, in Indianola, Iowa, to Lloyd and Gertrude (Hesseling) Young. She married Gerald V. Frieden on June 13, 1948, in Indianola. He died in October 1976. Mrs. Frieden enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family and visiting with her friends. No one was a stranger. Memorials may be made to Scott County Visiting Nurse Hospice Association, American Heart Association or American Cancer Society. Survivors include daughters, Kathy Heritage (Ed Rhodes), Davenport, and Connie (Mrs. Carl) Lange, Inverness, Fla.; sons, Robert (Rhonda) Frieden, Darien, Ill., and Steven Frieden (Debbie Bitler), Maquoketa, Iowa; grandchildren, Allyson Frieden, Aaron Graff, Nicole Heritage, Angela (L. Eric) Overpeck, Brady Frieden, Jeremy (Sara) Frieden, Joshua Frieden, Tyler Frieden and Brian Heritage; great-grandchildren, Braxton Graff, Mitchell Graff, Hayden Overpeck and Logan Overpeck; her mother, Gertrude Young, Prairie City, Iowa; and brothers, Glenn Young, Boise, Idaho, and LaVerne Young, Monroe, Iowa. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father; brothers, Ronald and Wendell Young; and a grandson, Travis Frieden.

Terry Williams
DAVENPORT -- Services for Terry D. Williams, formerly of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Mr. Williams died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he had resided for the past seven years. He was employed as a mortgage loan officer. He played minor league baseball for five years for the Boston Red Sox, beginning in 1968. He was born May 21, 1950, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Donald R. Sr. and Doris I. (Martz) Williams. He married Kathy Gugelmeyer in 1968 in Davenport. He graduated from West High School in 1968. He had been a three-sport athlete earning All-State honors in baseball. He graduated from Huron College in Huron, S.D., with a business degree. He was a former member of Cedar Memorial Christian Church, Davenport. He was an avid golfer, acted as a basketball official in Arizona and enjoyed reading. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Nathan Rinnert, Davenport; a son and daughter-in-law, Tyler and Cory Williams, Davenport; a grandson, Hunter Douglas Williams; his parents, Don and Doris Williams, Davenport; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cindy and Kye Johnson and Amy and Matt Coleman, all of Davenport; brothers and sisters-in-law, Don "Spin" and Mindy Williams, Pittsburgh, and Jeff and Jessi Williams, Orion, Ill.; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew J. Williams, in 1967.

Ronald McColley
SAVANNA, Ill. -- Ronald R. McColley, of Savanna, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery . Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. McColley had farmed in Washington Township, worked on the building of the Savanna-Sabula Bridge, worked at Savanna Ordinance Depot, was employed as a foreman at Hanover Woolen Mill and worked at Savanna Fabricators. He was born Dec. 28, 1907, in Rice Township, Jo Daviess County. He married Mona Schumaker in 1931 in Mount Carroll. She died in 1990. Memorials may be made to Carroll County Senior Citizens or First United Methodist Church, Savanna. Survivors include daughters, Beverly Tack, Angeline Primak and Peggy Chapman, all of Savanna, Patsy Benell, Lanark, Jane Rasmussen, Cedarville, and Joan Bielema, Thomson; sons, John and Richard Sr., both of Sabula, Iowa; 38 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Arthur Sissel
BLUE GRASS, Iowa -- Services for Arthur W. Sissel, of 3610 U.S. 61, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park, with a military service by the combined squads of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Sissel died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. He was a farmer and retired in 1989 from Carver Pump Co. He also had worked for Muscatine County, mowing ditches, and at Farm Service. He was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Muscatine County. He married Vera Hager in 1947 in Maquoketa. During World War II, he served with the Army in the European Theater. Memorials may be made to Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Pat Lane, Stillwater, Minn., and Carla Streger and Karen Gray, both of Muscatine; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lavona Couillard, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and a brother, Lyle Sissel, Muscatine.

Lois Bock
MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Services for Lois A. Bock, of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Pence Cemetery , rural Baldwin. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Bock died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa. She worked for many years at the 64 Drive-In, Maquoketa, and in the dietary department at Jackson County Public Hospital. She also had worked at Maquoketa Care Center and Pacific Coast Feather. Lois Scott was born Oct. 11, 1928, in rural Baldwin. She married Harold Bock in 1946 in Clinton. He died in 1990. Memorials may be made to Lois A. Bock Memorial Fund. Survivors include daughters, Dianne Henry and Pat Keitel, both of Maquoketa; sons, Michael, Warsaw, Ill., Douglas, Fairbury, Ill., and Jeffrey, Minot Air Force Base, N.D.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Ethel Sterk, Beulah Shannon and Mariann Burrell, all of Baldwin; and brothers, Dale Scott, Maquoketa, and Larry Scott, Anchorage, Alaska.

Rose Farrell
CLINTON, Iowa -- Rose M. Farrell, of 1912 Liberty Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North Campus, Clinton. No visitation or services will be held. The body has been cremated. Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Farrell was employed more than 15 years as a housekeeper at Buck's Barn. Rose Schmidt was born Oct. 23, 1925, in St. Louis. She married David Farrell in 1988 in Clinton. Survivors include her husband; four stepdaughters; two stepsons; 10 step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson.

Howard Bielema
ERIE, Ill. -- Services for Howard L. Bielema, of 2551 Rock Road, will be 10:30 a.m. today at Fulton Chapel of Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lusk Memorial Cemetery , Albany. Mr. Bielema died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-North Campus, Clinton. He was a farmer in the Newton Township area. He was born March 15, 1930, in Albany. He married Louise Vander Vinne in 1950 in Fulton. Memorials may be made to First Reformed Church Library, Fulton, or Albany Ambulance. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Brenda De Weerdt, Albany, and Marlene Keisel, Erie; a son, Darrell, Bloomington; five grandchildren; and sisters, Darlene Sikkema, Fulton, and Viola Thompson, Port Byron.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery , Kewanee. Mrs. Bullock died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at her home. Theo Coan was born Jan. 14, 1908, in Viola. She married Glen Bullock in 1927 in Kewanee. He died in 1984. Visitation is one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Brooklyn. Miss Heath died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at her home. Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn, is in charge of arrangements. She was a nationally registered paramedic. She was born Aug. 26, 1963, in Dubuque. Survivors include her father, Lenard Heath, Dubuque; a sister, Anne Heath, Warrenville, Ill.; and brothers, Jim Heath, Cedar Rapids, and Tom Heath, Iowa City.

Carol McDonnell
CALUMET CITY, Ill. -- Services for Carol A. McDonnell., of Calumet City, will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, Lansing, and 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Knock Catholic Church, Calumet City. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery , Calumet City. Visitation is 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Miss McDonnell died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at her home, after a brief illness. She was born April 21, 1944, in Clinton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Masses. Survivors include her father and stepmother, Giles and Sophia McDonnell, Griffith, Ind.; sisters Mary Lamb and Janice Purcell, both of Davenport; brothers Vincent, Griffith and Dennis, Calumet City; and a special friend, Larry Brassur, Calumet City.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Alene G. Smith, of Muscatine, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Crescent Care Center. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery , Muscatine. Mrs. Smith was employed as a nurse's aide at many nursing homes including Lutheran Homes, Muscatine. She had worked at McKee Button Factory and Heinz, both in Muscatine. Alene Delap was born Aug. 27, 1910, in Conesville. She married John Smith in 1927 in Muscatine. He died in 1961. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include a daughter, Janice Bower, Grundy Center; sons, John R., Rock Island, DeWayne E., Muscatine, and Donald, Shannon, Ill.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Nina Spears
SAVANNA, Ill. -- Services for Nina S. Spears, of Savanna, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church, Savanna. Burial will be in Savanna Township Cemetery , Savanna. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Mrs. Spears died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at her home. She worked 26 years at Eaton Corp., Savanna and Hanover, until her retirement in 1993. She was born May 27, 1927, in Ukraine. A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include daughters, Sylvia Ehrler and Candy Spears, both of Mount Carroll; a grandson; and a brother, Cliff Downing, Geneva.
