January 14, 1929 ~ April 14, 2008

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and
the Alzheimer's Association.

Charlotte Switzer, 79, of Burlington died at 5:00 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2008, at Burlington Care Center.

Born January 14, 1929 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Raymond and Effie Vannice Balzer. On June 24, 1950 she married Frank Paul Switzer in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1989.

Mrs. Switzer worked at Sylvania and also was the owner of Trade Winds Bar and an antique store and was manager of the Corn Dog Factory in Westland Mall.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Women of the Moose, Elks and Eagles Women’s Auxiliaries. She enjoyed yard work, flower gardening, horseback riding, and spending time and boating on the Mississippi River. She loved going antiquing, collecting monkeys, and animals especially dogs and cats.

Survivors include one son, Kevin Switzer of Burlington; two step daughters, Carolee Feltch of Oxnard, California and Joyce Luker of Rogers, Arkansas; one step son, Dennis Switzer of Nevada, Iowa; two grandchildren Megan and Keeley Switzer; five step grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Balzer of Rainier, Washington; goddaughter, Kathy Wunderlich; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents and husband, one sister Dorothy, and one brother Milton preceded her in death.

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and the Alzheimers Association.

Darrell "Todd" Thompson
June 3, 1971 ~ April 2, 2008

-Celebration of Life: Sunday, April 6th, at 4:00 PM in Church of the Open Bible
The Rev. Ken Peterson will officiate.
There will be no visitation.

Darrell “Todd” Thompson, 36, of Burlington, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at his residence.

Born June 3, 1971 in Beardstown, Illinois, he was the son of Darrell Thompson and Verna Jean Bedenbender Thompson Schmitz.

Mr. Thompson was a handyman and worked side jobs. He was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed spending time with his boys, fishing, and playing baseball with his brother Greg. He also enjoyed listening to music and hanging out with his friends and family.

Survivors include three sons, Marcus Bragg, Salvador Thompson and Nicholas Thompson all of Burlington; his father, Darrell Thompson of Jacksonville, Illinois; one brother, Greg Thompson of Burlington; one half brother, Bobby Thompson of Beardstown, Illinois; and two half sisters, Candice Johnson of Jackson, Illinois and Heidi Brown of Beardstown, Illinois; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His mother Verna Schmitz preceded him in death.

Dale D. Thomson
August 25, 1948 - September 21, 2007

-Interment: North Walker Cemetery , rural Burlington, Iowa

Dale D. Thomson, 59, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 6:15 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007, in his home.

Born August 25, 1948 in Burlington, he was the son of Lawrence Jr. and Louise Shellnut Thomson. On September 3, 1970 he married Carla Babb in Burlington.

He was a 1968 graduate of Mediapolis High School.

Dale worked for Winegard Company in the Maintenance Dept. for over 30 years. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. He was a member of Bass Pro and Ducks Unlimited. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved NASCAR and all racing.

Survivors include his wife Carla Thomson of Burlington; one daughter Susan Dayle Thomson of Burlington; two grandchildren Raven Scott and Daylen Campbell of Burlington; two godchildren Carl Thomson II and Tim Thomson; two brothers Carl Thomson of Maumelle, Arkansas and Marvin Thomson Sr. of Burlington; and one sister Juanita Walker of Morning Sun.

His parents preceded him in death.

Mary C. Uppinghouse
June 18, 1916 - October 12, 2007

-Friends May Call: Tuesday, October 16th 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in Grace United
Methodist Church.
-Family will receive friends: Tuesday, October 16th from 10:00 AM until time of
service in Grace United Methodist Church.
-Memorial Funeral Service: Tuesday, October 16th at 11:00 AM in Grace United
Methodist Church
The Reverend Charles Downing will officiate.
-Inurnment: Forest Grove Cemetery , Canton, Missouri, at a later date..

Mary C. Uppinghouse, 91, of Burlington, died at 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2007, at Great River Medical Center – Klein Unit.

Born March 12, 1916, in Plevna, Missouri she was the daughter of James W. and Ancile Jennings Carty. On June 18, 1940, she married David F. Uppinghouse, Sr. in Warrensburg, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1985.

Mary was a well-known restaurateur in southeast Iowa. From the Highway Pantry in Wapello, to the Wen-Mar Café in Danville, to Lincolnville Café, Holiday Inn, Hotel Burlington, YWCA Cafeteria, and then Mary’s Home Plate in Burlington and Danville. She was also a cook at Apollo and Oak Street Schools. She was well known for her homemade treats, including her own special recipe poppy seed salad dressing.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Ten Club in Danville, Iowa.

Survivors include a son, David F. (Mary) Uppinghouse, Jr. of Centennial, Colorado; a daughter, M. Jane (Joseph) Weingart of Burlington; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Her parents, husband and one half-brother, James Carty, Jr., preceded her in death.

According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Uppinghouse has been cremated.

Armando "Tony" Barrera Villarreal
July 31, 1946 ~ May 1, 2008

-According to his wishes, there will be no visitation or service for Mr. Villarreal, his
body has been cremated.

Armando “Tony” Barrera Villarreal Sr., 61, of Gulfport, Illinois, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his home.

Born July 31, 1946 in Port Isabel, Texas, he was the son of Jesus Sr. and Francisca Barrera Villarreal.

Mr. Villarreal worked at J.I. Case Company for 33 years. He enjoyed dancing, local restaurants, the gambling boat, and old western movies.

Survivors include four daughters, Frances Jean Doran of Burlington, Jamie Alyss Villarreal of West Burlington, Kimberly Morris of Burlington and Gabriel Estrada; four sons, Armando Villarreal Jr. of Tennessee, Walter Dean Villarreal of Colona, Illinois, Joshua Villarreal of Galesburg, Illinois and Timothy Berry; twelve grandchildren; two great grandchildren; ten brothers, Alberto Villarreal of Virginia, Enrique Villarreal of Washington, Jesus Villarreal, Antonio Villarreal, Alfredo Villarreal, Luis Villarreal, Felipe Villarreal, Orlando Villarreal and Mario Villarreal all of Texas and Santos Villarreal of Burlington, Iowa; four sisters, Yolanda Aron and Dora Villarreal both of Arkansas and Maria Barrios and Diana Villarreal both of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Cheryl Margaret Whaley
October 6, 1910 - October 8, 2007

Cheryl Margaret Whaley, 97, of Burlington, Iowa died at 10:55 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2007, at Great River Medical Center.

Born October 6, 1910 in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Gussie and Helen Bloom Bosch. In 1931 she married Marvin Whaley in Whittier, California. He preceded her in death on August 1, 1973.

Mrs. Whaley was a 1929 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was an avid bridge player, playing with several bridge clubs and traveling with them to Hawaii on several occasions. She also enjoyed needlework and was a 50-year member of TTT.

Survivors include one son, Robert (Sherry) Whaley of Burlington; five grandchildren, John Whaley and Edward Whaley both of Brookfield, Wisconsin and David Snyder, Teresa Ruberg and Jeff Snyder all of Burlington; two great grandchildren, Marcy Ruberg and Tyler Ruberg.

Her husband, daughter Marcia, grandson Richard “Rich”, and parents preceded her in death.

Patricia "Pat" J. Williams
October 20, 1939 ~ March 31, 2008

Patricia “Pat” J. Williams, 68, of Mediapolis died at 11:05 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis.

Born October 20, 1939 in Birmingham, Iowa, she was the daughter of Gale and Mildred Crafton Heater. She married Joseph Nutz in 1956. On March 19, 1965 she married Jack Richard Williams Sr. in Oquawka, Illinois. He preceded her in death on November 5, 1996.

Mrs. Williams worked as an inspector at I.A.A.P. for over 30 years, retiring in April 2005.

She loved craftwork, her pet dogs and cats and gardening.

Survivors include one son, Rick L. (Jackie) Nutz of Fairfax, Iowa; her mother, Mildred Brown of Burlington; one brother, Lanny (Karen) Heater of Winslow, Arkansas; one half sister, Debbie (John) Johnston of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina; one step son, Jack R. Williams Jr. of Burlington; one step daughter, Debra L. Green of Burlington; two grandchildren, Matt (Nichole) Nutz of Texas and Staci (Dan) Wozniak of Cedar Rapids; three step grandchildren, Jill, Jaime, and Joellee Fritz of Fairfax; four great grandchildren, McKenzie, Jordan, Peyton and Aran; one step great grandson, Cayden and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Her husband, father, two step sons Ted and Tommy Williams, and step father Leonard Brown preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established.
